162. Frequent Consumption of Vegetables and The Decreased Risk of Ovarian Cancer

Abstract

A case-control study was conducted to assess the relationship of dietary habits to ovarian cancer. A uniform questionnaire was filled out by 44 ovarian cancer cases hospitalized at Sapporo Medical University or 2 other hospitals in Sapporo between August and norember, 1990. Two hundred twenty individually locality-matched controls were selected from telephone books and sent the same questionnaire ; 156 (70.9%) responded. The conditional logistic regression anal-ysis was used to compare the data of 44 ovarian cancer cases and the 156 individ-ually age-matched controls. Univariate analysis revealed that single marital sta-tus was significantly associated with the increased risk of ovarian cancer (odds ratio, or OR=3.45, 95% confidence interval, or 95%CI 1.13-10.84). Frequent intake of midnight meals was also significantly related to the increased risk (trend, OR=1.56, 95%CI 1.01-2.41), and frequent intake of vegetables other than yellow or red was significantly related to the decreased risk (trend, OR= 0.58, 95%CI 0.37-0.91). These odds ratios concerning dietary habits were not substantially altered even after adjustment for potentially distorting variables such as marital status, the number of parities, and family history for uterine, ovarian, or breast cancer with the multivariate analysis. No other dietary habits, including frequent consumption of meat, fish, or milk, were associated with the increase or decrease of the risk of ovarian cancer.

Abstract

We studied the epidemiology of 109 cases of gonococcal infections (105 males with urethritis and 4 females with cervicitis), together with the basic and clinical effects of cefetamet pivoxil in the cases. The peak of age distribution of the male patients was in the younger half of their twenties, and all of the 4 female cases were between 20 and 39 years old. The major source of infections in the males younger than 25 years old was their girl friends or so-called pick-up friends, and that of the males older than 25 years old workers serving at an amusement center, for example, bars and so-called special massage parlor, which accounted for about three fourths of the male cases between 35 and 44 years old. The distribution of the MIC (inoculum size; 10(6) CFU/ml) of Cefetamet against beta-lactamase non penicillinase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (non-PPNG) ranged from 0.025 to 0.1 microgram/ml and that against beta-lactamase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae ranged from 0.025 to 0.05 microgram/ml. The isolation rate of PPNG was 10.2% (9/88). In male patients with gonococcal urethritis, the efficacy rate was 100% on days 3 and 7 for 1, 000 mg single dose and 7-day treatment and 500 mg single dose treatment. One of the cases treated with 250 mg single dose therapy was unchanged at 3, but the efficacy rate of the remaining cases was 100% at day 7. Complicated urethritis with C. trachomatis was noticed in 25.7% (5/105) of the male urethritis and in 25.0% (1/4) of the female cervicitis cases. The only side effect was diarrhea observed in 1 of the 124 case (0.8%).

Abstract

Objective:The aims of this systematic review were to identify quick, simple and easy-to-use measures of walking ability currently used to assess children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP), and to evaluate the clinical utility and psychometric properties of these measures. Data sources:The PubMed, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus and MEDLINE databases were searched up to March 2015. Review methods:Two independent reviewers rated the methodological quality of the identified measures using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist. Results:The 1-Minute Walk Test, Timed Up and Go Test, ABILOCO-Kids, Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire and Functional Mobility Scale were identified. Each measure can be carried out within 5 min with limited equipment, and does not require examiner training. There was “limited” to “strong” evidence on the reliability and validity of these measurements, whereas evidence on measurement error and responsiveness was limited. Conclusion:The identified measures in this systematic review may be considered for the clinical measurement of walking ability in children and adolescents with CP in a quick, simple and easy-to-use manner. However, there is overall a lack of evidence on the psychometric properties of these tools. The lack of evidence regarding measurement error and responsiveness might limit their value in measuring change over time.Implications for RehabilitationThe ABILOCO-Kids, 1-Minute Walk Test, Timed Up and Go Test, Gillette Functional Assessment Questionnaire, Functional Mobility Scale can be performed within 5 min with limited equipment, and do not require examiner training for measuring of walking ability in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy.The clinicians should use these measurement tools carefully when assessing change over time as the available evidence on measurement error and responsiveness is limited.When clinicians use these measurement tools, the psychometric properties reported in this systematic review should be considered in the selection of tools and subsequent interpretation of results. Abstract

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF1) is a potent mitogen. IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP3) binds and inhibits IGF1. High circulating IGF1 levels and low IGFBP3 levels are associated with increased risk of several cancers. We examined relationships between serum levels of these factors and hepatoma risk in a case-control study nested in a prospective cohort study (the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study (JACC Study)). A baseline survey was conducted from 1988 to 1990, and 39,242 subjects donated blood samples. Participants diagnosed with hepatoma by 1997 were considered cases for nested case-control studies. Ninety-one cases and 263 sex- and age-matched controls were analyzed. A conditional logistic model was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for the incidence of hepatoma associated with serum IGF1 and IGFBP3 levels. Neither IGF1 nor the molar ratio of IGF1/IGFBP3 was correlated with hepatoma risk. After adjustment for hepatitis viral infection, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol intake, a higher molar difference of (IGFBP3 − IGF1) was associated with a decreased hepatoma risk more than IGFBP3 alone ( p for trend <0.001 and = 0.003, respectively). People in the highest quartile had a lower risk (OR = 0.098; 95 % confidence interval = 0.026-0.368). In subgroup analyses of males and females, the molar difference was associated with a decreased hepatoma risk ( p for trend <0.05). In non-elderly individuals, the difference was inversely correlated with the incidence of hepatoma ( p for trend <0.01).
