Abstract

When a pulsed, few-cycle electromagnetic wave is focused by optics with f-number smaller than two, the frequency components it contains are focused to different regions of space, building up a complex electromagnetic field structure. Accurate numerical computation of this structure is essential for many applications such as the analysis, diagnostics, and control of high-intensity laser-matter interactions. However, straightforward use of finite-difference methods can impose unacceptably high demands on computational resources, owing to the necessity of resolving far-field and near-field zones at sufficiently high resolution to overcome numerical dispersion effects. Here, we present a procedure for fast computation of tight focusing by mapping a spherically curved far-field region to periodic space, where the field can be advanced by a dispersion-free spectral solver. In many cases of interest, the mapping reduces both run time and memory requirements by a factor of order 10, making it possible to carry out simulations on a desktop machine or a single node of a supercomputer. We provide an open-source C++ implementation with Python bindings and demonstrate its use for a desktop machine, where the routine provides the opportunity to use the resolution sufficient for handling the pulses with spectra spanning over several octaves. The described approach can facilitate the stability analysis of theoretical proposals, the studies based on statistical inferences, as well as the overall development and analysis of experiments with tightly-focused short laser pulses. 165. A Two-Tailed Phosphopeptide Crystallizes to Form a Lamellar Structure

Abstract

The crystal structure of a designed phospholipid‐inspired amphiphilic phosphopeptide at 0.8 Å resolution is presented. The phosphorylated β‐hairpin peptide crystallizes to form a lamellar structure that is stabilized by intra‐ and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, including an extended β‐sheet structure, as well as aromatic interactions. This first reported crystal structure of a two‐tailed peptidic bilayer reveals similarities in thickness to a typical phospholipid bilayer. However, water molecules interact with the phosphopeptide in the hydrophilic region of the lattice. Additionally, solid‐state NMR was used to demonstrate correlation between the crystal structure and supramolecular nanostructures. The phosphopeptide was shown to self‐assemble into semi‐elliptical nanosheets, and solid‐state NMR provides insight into the self‐assembly mechanisms. This work brings a new dimension to the structural study of biomimetic amphiphilic peptides with determination of molecular organization at the atomic level.

Inorganic chemistry 56(14), 8446 - 8453 (2017). doi:10.1021/acs.inorgchem.7b01131, In this work, we report the structural phase transformation of tetragonal inverse-perovskite REPt$_3$B (RE = Sm, and Gd–Tm) compounds to cubic perovskite structure, with a large volume reduction of about 9% (reduction of the c axis, ∼17%; increase in the a axis, ∼5%). The structural stability of the cubic phase, however, could only be maintained by lowering the lattice parameter of the off-stoichiometric REPt$_3$B$_x$ (x < 1), formed in the process of annealing. The combined effect of phase transformation and stoichiometric defects is argued to be responsible for the observed volume collapse. Unexpectedly, the application of a large hydrostatic pressure of ∼20 GPa does not have any significant effect on the crystal structure. Neutron diffraction studies and heat capacity measurements unambiguously confirm different magnetic transition temperatures in the tetragonal and cubic phases. The different physical properties of these two phases demonstrate the interrelationship between the crystal chemistry and the physics of the system. The synthetic route to cubic REPt$_3$B$_x$ identified in this work may be utilized to prepare new ternary rare-earth intermetallics in a cubic perovksite form, which was previously found to facilitate unconventional superconductivity., Published by American Chemical Society, Washington, DC

Abstract

In this work, we report the successful synthesis of a polycrystalline, binary compound ErIr3, forming a macroscopic coexistence of two different cubic structures (AuBe5-type and AuCu3-type). The magnetic properties of two polymorphs could be distinguished by means of different measurement techniques. The detailed study of dc magnetization and heat capacity behaviour confirm that the phase with the cubic AuBe5-type structure orders ferromagnetically below 5.2 K, while the AuCu3-type phase remains paramagnetic down to 2.5 K. The presence of a glassy state in this compound is manifested in the frequency dependent ac susceptibility measurement, magnetic relaxation and magnetic memory effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The dianion derived from (2Z,6Z)‐3,7‐diphenyl‐N2,N6‐di(pyridin‐2‐yl)pyrrolo[2,3‐f]indole‐2,6(1H,5H)‐diimine (H2BL), a modified BODIPY ligand precursor, is shown to be capable of bridging two metal complex fragments RuL2, L=2,4‐pentanedionato (acac−), 2,2'‐bipyridine (bpy) or 2‐phenylazopyridine (pap) in [Ru(acac)2Ru(μ‐BL)Ru(acac)2] (1/2), [Ru(bpy)2Ru(μ‐BL)Ru(bpy)2](ClO4)2 ([3](ClO4)2) and [Ru(pap)2Ru(μ‐BL)Ru(pap)2](ClO4)2 ([4](ClO4)2). The compounds, including a diastereoisomeric pair 1 (meso) and 2 (rac) were spectroscopically and structurally characterized. Reversible electron transfers as revealed by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry allowed for an EPR and UV‐vis‐NIR spectroelectrochemical investigation of several neighboring charge states. Together with susceptibility measurements and TD‐DFT calculations the assignment of oxidation states reveals that 1, 2 are diruthenium(III) species which can be oxidized or reduced by one electron whereas 32+ and 42+ contain ruthenium(II) and get reduced or oxidized mainly at the dianionic bridge (32+) or are reduced at the ancillary ligands pap (42+). Abstract

The objective of the current study is to examine the cultural ecology of health associated with mitigating perinatal risk in Bihar, India. We describe the occurrences, objectives and explanations of health-related beliefs and behaviours during pregnancy and postpartum using focus group discussions with younger and older mothers. First, we document perceived physical and supernatural threats and the constellation of traditional and biomedical practises including taboos, superstitions and rituals used to mitigate them. Second, we describe the extent to which these practises are explained as risk-preventing versus health-promoting behaviour. Third, we discuss the extent to which these practises are consistent, inconsistent or unrelated to biomedical health practises and describe the extent to which traditional and biomedical health practises compete, conflict and coexist. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the relationships between traditional and biomedical practises in the context of the cultural ecology of health and reflect on how a comprehensive understanding of perinatal health practises can improve the efficacy of health interventions and improve outcomes. Abstract

π-Conjugated bridged isomeric diruthenium(II) complexes [(acac)2RuII(μ-DIPQD)RuII(acac)2], 1(trans) and 2(cis) (acac–= acetylacetonate, (8E,16E)-N8,N16-diphenylindeno[1,2-b]indeno[2′,1′:5,6]pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline-8,16-diimine (trans-DIPQD), and (12E,16E)-N12,N16-diphenylindeno[1,2-b]indeno[1′,2′:5,6]pyrazino[2,3-g]quinoxaline-12,16-diimine (cis-DIPQD) were separated and structurally characterized. The structures of the rac(ΔΔ/ΛΛ) forms of 1and 2exhibit two units of {Ru(acac)2}, linked to adjacent pyrazine and imine nitrogen donors of the bridge (DIPQD) in transand cismodes, with metal–metal separations of 9.050 and 6.330 Å, respectively. The packing diagrams of 1and 2revealed an intermolecular π···π stacking interaction (3.202–3.398 Å) involving the face-to-face arrangement of the aromatic rings of DIPQD in adjacent molecules and varying solid-state packing modes, slipped stacking in the former versus brick-layer stacking in the latter. The electronic forms associated with multiple reversible one-electron redox steps of 1and 2were addressed by DFT (MO composition, Mulliken spin density distribution), supported by EPR of intermediate paramagnetic states and by UV–vis–NIR spectroelectrochemistry in all redox states. The results reveal similar electronic forms along the redox series irrespective of their isomeric identities in 1and 2, viz., primarily metal-based oxidations ([(acac)2RuII(μ-DIPQD)RuIII(acac)2]+, 1+/2+, S= 1/2; [(acac)2RuIII(μ-DIPQD)RuIII(acac)2]2+, 12+/22+, S= 1) and bridge-based reductions ([(acac)2RuII(μ-DIPQD•–)RuII(acac)2]−, 1•–/2•–, S= 1/2; [(acac)2RuII(μ-DIPQD2–)RuII(acac)2]2–, 12–/22–, S= 1). TD-DFT analysis of the electronic transitions in the complexes suggests bridge-targeted mixed metal/ligand-based multiple charge transfer transitions over the visible to NIR region in all redox states, while a weak band involving the radical bridge appeared in the long-wavelength region (∼2000 nm) in 1•–/2•–.

193. Physical properties of RIr3 (R = Gd, Tb, Ho) compounds with coexisting polymorphic phases.

Abstract

The binary compounds GdIr3, TbIr3 and HoIr3 are synthesized successfully and found to form with macroscopic co-existence of two polymorphic phases: AuBe5 (C15b) and AuCu3-type. The dc magnetization and heat capacity studies confirm that the C15b phase orders ferromagnetically, whereas the AuCu3 phase remains paramagnetic down to 2 K. The frequency dependent ac-susceptibility data, time dependent magnetic relaxation behavior and magnetic memory effect studies suggest that TbIr3 and HoIr3 are cannonical spin-glass systems, but no glassy feature could be found in GdIr3. The critical behavior of all three compounds has been investigated using the magnetization and heat capacity measurements around the transition temperature (TC). The critical exponents α, β, γ and δ have been estimated using different techniques such as the Arrott–Noakes plot, Kouvel–Fisher plot and critical isotherm as well as analysis of specific heat data and study of magnetocaloric effect. Although Himalayan P waves are not uncommon in congenital heart diseases involving the tricuspid valve, it is rare in pediatric idiopathic restrictive cardiomyopathy. We are presenting one of the tallest P waves in literature, the Himalayan P in a toddler with idiopathic restrictive cardiomyopathy. Additionally, we reviewed the literature on the value of electrocardiograms in the evaluation of restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is a rare congenital anomaly with <200 cases reported to date. Most patients are asymptomatic. Symptoms depend on the functionality of the valve and associated heart defects, most often presenting as aortic regurgitation followed by aortic stenosis. Management guidelines are ill-defined. We present two cases of QAV with rare associations (ventricular septal defect) and variable clinical presentation.

200. Synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic and antimicrobial efficacy of nitrogen and erbium co-doped ZnO nanoparticles

Abstract

Using the chemical co-precipitation approach, a series of nitrogen (N) and erbium (Er) co-doped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) was effectively synthesized to enhance the photocatalytic and antibacterial activities. Several characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, were carried out to validate the evaluated photocatalytic and antibacterial activities. XRD analysis confirms the pure wurtzite ZnO phase without the presence of any secondary phase. XPS analysis confirms the successful incorporation of nitrogen and erbium into the ZnO matrix. The optical bandgap of ZnO calculated from UV-vis spectroscopy shows a redshift after Er–N co-doping, with the lowest bandgap of 3.215 eV calculated for Zn0.97Er0.03N0.01O0.99NPs. SEM images demonstrate the formation of nanorods after N–Er co-doping, followed by gradually increased rod diameter and length after N–Er co-doping. Moreover, the photocatalytic activities of ZnO samples were measured by their ability to facilitate the photodegradation of Rhodamine B under UV irradiation. ZnO with 1 mol% N doping exhibits 88% photodegradation of RhB under UV light within 360 min, and the photodegradation and antibacterial activity are greatly improved with Er co-doping. In fact, 3 mol% Er-1 mol% N doped ZnO NPs demonstrate the highest photocatalytic activity, with approximately 96% degradation after 360 min, as well as superior antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus(Gram-positive bacteria) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa(Gram-negative bacteria) with the highest zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 16 nm, due to nanorod formation, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), and decreased electron–hole recombination, as validated by SEM, XPS, and PL spectroscopy.
