We examine the properties of strongly magnetized accretion discs in a global framework, with particular focus on the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities such as the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Work by Pessah and Psaltis showed that MRI is stabilized beyond a critical toroidal field in compressible, differentially rotating flows and, also, reported the appearance of two new instabilities beyond this field. Their results stemmed from considering geometric curvature effects due to the suprathermal background toroidal field, which had been previously ignored in weak-field studies. However, their calculations were performed under the local approximation, which poses the danger of introducing spurious behavior due to the introduction of global geometric terms in an otherwise local framework. In order to avoid this, we perform a global eigenvalue analysis of the linearized MHD equations in cylindrical geometry. We confirm that MRI indeed tends to be highly suppressed when the background toroidal field attains the Pessah-Psaltis limit. We also observe the appearance of two new instabilities that emerge in the presence of highly suprathermal toroidal fields. These results were additionally verified using numerical simulations in PLUTO. There are, however, certain differences between the the local and global results, especially in the vertical wavenumber occupancies of the various instabilities, which we discuss in detail. We also study the global eigenfunctions of the most unstable modes in the suprathermal regime, which are inaccessible in the local analysis. We describe results from particle-in-cell simulations of driven turbulence in collisionless, magnetized, relativistic pair plasma. This physical regime provides a simple setting for investigating the basic properties of kinetic turbulence and is relevant for high-energy astrophysical systems such as pulsar wind nebulae and astrophysical jets. In this paper, we investigate the statistics of turbulent fluctuations in simulations on lattices of up to $1024^3$ cells and containing up to $2 \times 10^{11}$ particles. Due to the absence of a cooling mechanism in our simulations, turbulent energy dissipation reduces the magnetization parameter to order unity within a few dynamical times, causing turbulent motions to become sub-relativistic. In the developed stage, our results agree with predictions from magnetohydrodynamic turbulence phenomenology at inertial-range scales, including a power-law magnetic energy spectrum with index near $-5/3$, scale-dependent anisotropy of fluctuations described by critical balance, log-normal distributions for particle density and internal energy density (related by a $4/3$ adiabatic index, as predicted for an ultra-relativistic ideal gas), and the presence of intermittency. We propose that the accretion disks fueling active galactic nuclei are supported vertically against gravity by a strong toroidal ($\phi-$direction) magnetic field that develops naturally as the result of an accretion disk dynamo. The magnetic pressure elevates most of the gas carrying the accretion flow at $R$ to large heights $z > 0.1 R$ and low densities, while leaving a thin dense layer containing most of the mass --- but contributing very little accretion --- around the equator. We show that such a disk model leads naturally to the formation of a broad emission line region through thermal instability. Extrapolating to larger radii, we demonstrate that local gravitational instability and associated star formation are strongly suppressed compared to standard disk models for AGN, although star formation in the equatorial zone is predicted for sufficiently high mass supply rates. This new class of accretion disk models thus appears capable of resolving two longstanding puzzles in the theory of AGN fueling: the formation of broad emission line regions and the suppression of fragmentation thought to inhibit accretion at the required rates. The rate at which matter flows into a galactic nucleus during early phases of galaxy evolution can sometimes exceed the Eddington limit of the growing central black hole by several orders of magnitude. We discuss the necessary conditions for the black hole to actually accrete this matter at such a high rate, and consider the observational appearance and detectability of a hyperaccreting black hole. In order to be accreted at a hyper-Eddington rate, the infalling gas must have a sufficiently low angular momentum. Although most of the gas is accreted, a significant fraction accumulates in an optically thick envelope with luminosity $\sim L_{\rm Edd}$, probably pierced by jets of much higher power. If $\dot M > 10^3 \dot M_{\rm Edd}$, the envelope spectrum resembles a blackbody with a temperature of a few thousand K, but for lower (but still hyper-Eddington) accretion rates the spectrum becomes a very dilute and hard Wien spectrum. We present results from particle-in-cell simulations of driven turbulence in magnetized, collisionless, and relativistic pair plasma. We find that fluctuations are consistent with the classical $k_\perp^{-5/3}$ magnetic energy spectrum at fluid scales and a steeper $k_\perp^{-4}$ spectrum at sub-Larmor scales, where $k_\perp$ is the wavevector perpendicular to the mean field. We demonstrate the development of a non-thermal, power-law particle energy distribution, $f(E) \sim E^{-\alpha}$, with index $\alpha$ that decreases with increasing magnetization and increases with increasing system size (relative to the characteristic Larmor radius). We investigate the pre-disruption gravitational dynamics and post-disruption hydrodynamics of the tidal disruption of stars by supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. We focus on binaries with relatively low mass primaries ($10^6M_{\odot}$), moderate mass ratios, and separations with reasonably long gravitational wave inspiral times (tens of Myr). First, we generate a large ensemble (between 1 and 10 million) of restricted three-body integrations to quantify the statistical properties of tidal disruptions by circular SMBH binaries of initially-unbound stars. Compared to the reference case of a disruption by a single SMBH, the binary potential induces significant variance into the specific energy and angular momentum of the star at the point of disruption. Second, we use Newtonian numerical hydrodynamics to study the detailed evolution of the fallback debris from 120 disruptions randomly selected from the three-body ensemble (excluding only the most deeply penetrating encounters). We find that the overall morphology of the debris is greatly altered by the presence of the second black hole, and the accretion rate histories display a wide range of behaviors, including order of magnitude dips and excesses relative to control simulations that include only one black hole. Complex evolution persists, in some cases, for many orbital periods of the binary. We find evidence for power in the accretion curves on timescales related to the binary orbital period, though there is no exact periodicity. We present a method for analyzing the interaction between radiation and matter in regions of intense, relativistic shear that can arise in many astrophysical situations. We show that there is a simple velocity profile that should be manifested in regions of large shear that have "lost memory" of their boundary conditions, and we use this self-similar velocity profile to construct the surface of last scattering, or $\tau \simeq 1$ surface, as viewed from any comoving point within the flow. We demonstrate that a simple treatment of scattering from this $\tau \simeq 1$ surface exactly conserves photon number, and derive the rate at which the radiation field is heated due to the shear present in the flow. The components of the comoving radiation energy-momentum tensor are calculated, and we show that they have relatively simple, approximate forms that interpolate between the viscous (small shear) and streaming (large shear) limits. We put our expression for the energy-momentum tensor in a covariant form that does not depend on the explicit velocity profile within the fluid and, therefore, represents a natural means for analyzing general, radiation-dominated, relativistic shear flows., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. The power mechanism and accretion geometry for low-power FR1 radio galaxies is poorly understood in comparison to Seyfert galaxies and QSOs. In this paper we use the diagnostic power of the Lya recombination line observed using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to investigate the accretion flows in three well-known, nearby FR1s: M87, NGC4696, and HydraA. The Ly$\alpha$ emission line's luminosity, velocity structure and the limited knowledge of its spatial extent provided by COS are used to assess conditions within a few parsecs of the super-massive black hole (SMBH) in these radio-mode AGN. We observe strong Ly$\alpha$ emission in all three objects with similar total luminosity to that seen in BL Lacertae objects. M87 shows a complicated emission line profile in Lya which varies spatially across the COS aperture and possibly temporally over several epochs of observation. In both NGC 4696 and M87, the Ly$\alpha$ luminosities $\sim 10^{40}$ ergs/s are closely consistent with the observed strength of the ionizing continuum in Case B recombination theory and with the assumption of near unity covering factor. It is possible that the Ly$\alpha$ emitting clouds are ionized largely by beamed radiation associated with the jets. Long-slit UV spectroscopy can be used to test this hypothesis. Hydra A and the several BL Lac objects studied in this and previous papers have Lya luminosities larger than M87 but their extrapolated, non-thermal continua are so luminous that they over-predict the observed strength of Ly$\alpha$, a clear indicator of relativistic beaming in our direction. Given their substantial space density ($\sim 4\times10^{-3} Mpc^{-3}$) the unbeamed Lyman continuum radiation of FR1s may make a substantial minority contribution (~10%) to the local UV background if all FR1s are similar to M87 in ionizing flux level., Comment: Eight figures, 15 pages in ApJ format. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence has been reported in a number of OLED emitter materials engineered to have low singlet-triplet energy gaps. Here we derive closed solutions for steady state and transient behaviors, and apply these results to obtain the singlet and triplet relaxation, forward and reverse crossing rates and the gap energy and reverse crossing prefactor from delayed and prompt relaxation rates measured over a series of temperatures. The primary rates are then used to calculate the fluorescent/phosphorescent ratio and the singlet/triplet population ratio. The method avoids the need for gated yield measurements. Good fits are obtained using previously published data for 4CzIPN and m-MTDATA:t-Bu-PBD and the results appear to be consistent with reported quantities were available, and with reported behaviors of OLEDS that use these materials., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

A tidal disruption event (TDE) -- when a star is destroyed by the immense gravitational field of a supermassive black hole -- transforms a star into a stream of tidally-shredded debris. The properties of this debris ultimately determine the observable signatures of TDEs. Here we derive a simple, self-similar solution for the velocity profile of the debris streams produced from TDEs, and show that this solution agrees extremely well with numerical results. Using this self-similar solution, we calculate an analytic, approximate expression for the radial density profile of the stream. We show that there is a critical adiabatic index that varies as a function of position along the stream above (below) which the stream is unstable (stable) to gravitational fragmentation. Motivated by indirect observational evidence for strongly magnetized accretion discs around black holes, and the novel theoretical properties of such solutions, we investigate how a strong magnetization state can develop and persist. To this end, we perform local simulations of accretion discs with an initially purely toroidal magnetic field of equipartition strength. We demonstrate that discs with zero net vertical magnetic flux and realistic boundary conditions cannot sustain a strong toroidal field. However, a magnetic pressure-dominated disc can form from an initial configuration with a sufficient amount of net vertical flux and realistic boundary conditions. Quarter-wave OLEDS are microcavity devices that can operate in the low finesse limit and achieve high efficiency (> 300 lm/W) by using interference to reduce the onset current for the transition to stimulated emission. In this work we study the transition to stimulated emission and compare the kinetics and electrical properties of conventional and quarter-wave devices. We show that suppression of spontaneous emission into the vertical mode can result in a sharp transition to stimulated emission at (\gamma /eV)I ~ N_se/\tau_sp where N_se/\tau_sp is determined by optical parameters, and we find a previously observed electrical signature for the transition where the excited state population becomes fixed at low current density. We then study the role of loss mechanisms in the quarter-wave configuration and conclude with some requirements for practical device., Comment: 42 pages, 24 figures
