Titanium dioxide Nanowires (NWs) are particularly interesting because of their very high surface/volume ratio and their photocatalytic activity allows them to be used in a myriad of applications. This manuscript presents a study of nanowires grown on a conductive substrate making use of a seed-assisted thermal oxidation process. To obtain doped NWs, before the oxidation, metallic titanium was doped with Fe (or Cr) by ion implantation technology. Analyses showed good quality Rutile phase and light absorption in the visible range. Transport properties of the NWs/electrolyte junction were investigated by using linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. They allowed us to measure the photovoltage and the barrier height of the junction. We also evaluated the density of hole trap states at the interface during illumination. Electrical results indicate that the formation of deep levels, induced by doping, influences the electron concentration in the TiO

Background: Hydroxyurea (HU), also known as hydroxycarbamide, is an oral ribonucleotide reductase inhibitor. In 1999, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved HU for the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD). Since then, it has become the cornerstone in the management of SCD patients, helping to reduce vaso-occlusive crises, acute chest syndrome, the need for blood transfusions, hospitalizations and mortality. There is considerable variability among individuals in HU pharmacokinetic (Pk) parameters that can influence treatment efficacy and toxicity. The objective of this work is part of a clinical study aimed at investigating HU Pk and determining the optimal sampling time to estimate the Area Under the Curve (AUC) in SCD patients. Methods: HU plasma concentration in 80 patients at various time points (2, 4, 6, 24 h) following a 48-h drug washout was quantified using High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) coupled with an ultraviolet (UV) detection method previously described in the literature and adapted to new conditions with partial modifications. Results: The mean HU administered dose was 19.5 ± 5.1 mg/kg (range: 7.7–37.5 mg/kg). The median AUC quantified in plasma patients was 101.3 mg/L/h (Interquartile Range (IQR): 72.5–355.9) and it was not influenced by the weight-based dose. However, there was a strong positive correlation between AUC and Body Mass Index (BMI) as well as dose per Body Surface Area (BSA). Along with a three-point approach for AUC determination present in the literature, we show results obtained from a four-point sampling strategy, which is more useful and effective for better optimizing dose escalation to the maximum tolerated dose (MTD). Moreover, we observed that most patients achieved the maximum HU plasma concentration two hours after drug administration, regardless of age differences. Conclusions: HU treatment, which represents a milestone in the treatment of SCD due to its ability to reduce disease complications and improve patients' quality of life, requires careful monitoring to optimize the individual dose for saving potential side effects and/or adverse events. Recent research on healthy individuals suggests that the valence of emotional stimuli influences behavioral reactions only when relevant to ongoing tasks, as they impact reaching arm movements and gait only when the emotional content cued the responses. However, it has been suggested that emotional expressions elicit automatic gaze shifting, indicating that oculomotor behavior might differ from that of the upper and lower limbs. To investigate, 40 participants underwent two Go/No‐go tasks, an emotion discrimination task (EDT) and a gender discrimination task (GDT). In the EDT, participants had to perform a saccade to a peripheral target upon the presentation of angry or happy faces and refrain from moving with neutral ones. In the GDT, the same images were shown, but participants responded based on the posers' gender. Participants displayed two behavioral strategies: a single saccade to the target (92.7%) or two saccades (7.3%), with the first directed at a task‐salient feature, that is, the mouth in the EDT and the nose‐eyes regions in the GDT. In both cases, the valence of facial expression impacted the saccades only when relevant to the response. Such evidence indicates the same principles govern the interplay between emotional stimuli and motor reactions despite the effectors employed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the growing importance of efficient street lighting management, driven by rising electricity costs and the need for municipalities to implement cost-effective solutions. Central to this study is the UNI 11248 Italian regulation, which extends the European EN 13201-1 standard introduced in 2016. These standards provide guidelines for designing, installing, operating, and maintaining lighting systems in pedestrian and vehicular traffic areas. Specifically, the UNI 11248 standard introduces the possibility to dynamically adjust light intensity through two alternative operating modes: (a) Traffic Adaptive Installation (TAI), which dims the light based solely on real-time traffic flow measurements; and (b) Full Adaptive Installation (FAI), which, in addition to traffic measurements, also requires evaluating road surface luminance and meteorological conditions. In this paper, we first present the general architecture and operation of an FAI-enabled lighting infrastructure, which relies on environmental sensors and a heterogeneous wireless communication network to connect intelligent, remotely controlled streetlights. Subsequently, we examine large-scale, in-field FAI infrastructures deployed in Vietnam and Italy as case studies, providing substantial measurement data. The paper offers insights into the measured energy consumption of these infrastructures, comparing them to that of conventional light-control strategies used in traditional installations. Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has become the preferred approach over open repair for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) due to its minimally invasive nature. The common femoral artery (CFA) is the main access vessel for EVAR, with both surgical exposure and percutaneous access being utilized. However, in emergent cases, percutaneous access can be challenging and may result in complications such as bleeding or dissection thrombosis, leading to the need for surgical conversion. This study aimed to share experiences in implementing a decision-making algorithm to reduce surgical conversions due to percutaneous access failures. A total of 74 aortic patients treated with EVAR in emergency settings were included in this retrospective study. This study focused on various outcomes such as perioperative mortality, morbidity, procedure time, surgical exposure time, and surgical conversion rate. After the implementation of the decision-making algorithm, decreases in surgical conversions and operating time were observed. Percutaneous access was found to be more challenging in cases with specific anatomical characteristics of the CFA, such as severe atherosclerosis or smaller vessel diameter. This study highlighted the importance of carefully assessing patient anatomical features and utilizing a decision-making algorithm to optimize outcomes in EVAR procedures. Further research is needed to continue improving practices for managing aortic aneurysms and reducing complications in femoral artery access approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Green hydrogen production by water splitting holds great potential as a clean and renewable source of energy for sustainable energy solutions. However, the efficiency of this process is hampered by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Overcoming these kinetic hurdles requires the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts. This study explores the effect of transition metal doping on the electrocatalytic properties of Ni(OH)2 microflowers towards alkaline OER. Transition metal‐doped Ni(OH)2 microflowers, with highly porous structures due to interconnected nanosheets, are synthesized by a facile, cheap, and scalable chemical bath deposition (CBD), and combined with graphene paper (GP) substrates to fabricate electrodes. Through a systematic exploration of the relationship between the transition metal dopant element type (Mn, Fe, Co, Zn) or concentration and the consequent electrochemical properties, Co‐doping demonstrates improvement in the overpotential at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 (329 mV), Tafel slope (45 mV dec−1), and other key performance indicators of Ni(OH)2 microflowers for OER. These results are attributed to the high number of active sites and their enhanced electrocatalytic activity benefiting from the presence of the transition metal dopant. Composition and morphology of two types of bilayers of plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition hydrogened silicon nitride (SiNx:H) and polyimide (PI), as effcient barrier against moisture in SiC‐based power devices, are investigated. Two types of silicon nitrides are obtained by changing the flow ratios of the SiH4 and NH3 precursors. Rutherford Backscatterered analyses show that the Si/N ratio varies from 0.6 to 0.8. Elastic recoil detection analyses show that the sample with higher nitrogen content has a higher total bound hydrogen content of 7.8 × 1017 cm−2 with respect to the 7.1 × 1017 cm−2. Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy characterizations show Si–H group concentrations of 0.96 × 1017 and 6.86 × 1017 cm−2 and NH groups of 4.82 × 1017 and 2.28 × 1017 cm−2, respectively. Silicon nitride films with higher concentration of N–H groups show higher reactivity and permeability to water, making them less effective as a barrier layer. Atomic force microscopy analyses of a PI layer deposited on the nitride layer, SiNx:H/PI show for both type of samples a similar roughness, indicating planarization that can increase the adhesion of SiNx:H/PI and resistance to moisture. The delamination mechanism of the bilayer under pressure pot test conditions is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The present study aimed at investigating whether gay fathers' coherence of mind within the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) moderated the influence of parental disclosure on children's exploration of their surrogacy origins during middle childhood and early adolescence. Background: Once children of gay fathers are disclosed to about their surrogacy conception, they may start exploring the meanings and implications of their conception. Very little is known about the factors that may enhance such exploration in gay father families. Method: A home-visit study was conducted with 60 White, cisgender, gay fathers and their 30 children born through gestational surrogacy, all residing in Italy and with medium to high socioeconomic status. At time 1, when children were aged 6–12 years (M = 8.31, SD = 1.68), fathers were rated for AAI coherence of mind and interviewed about their disclosure of the surrogacy origins to their child. At time 2, approximately 18 months later (M = 9.87, SD = 1.69), children were interviewed about their exploration of their surrogacy origins. Results: In the context of more information disclosed about the child conception, only children whose fathers showed greater AAI coherence of mind explored their surrogacy origins in more depth. Conclusion: Gay fathers' ability to show an internally consistent, but not emotionally overwrought, state of mind regarding their own attachment experiences impacted the extent to which their children felt safe and legitimated in sharing their curiosity about their conception. The implementation of architectural heritages' information systems to collect a huge amount of data using BIM and GIS constitutes a relatively recent field of research. However, the potentiality of such an approach is clear: the systemic application of these tools to the sites belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage would allow the building of easily accessible databases to support the heritage sites' management and preservation. As part of the collaboration between the Municipality and the University of Bergamo, an information system has been designed to support the Preservation Program of the Venetian Fortress of Bergamo. The geometrical simplicity of its elements makes the complex a suitable case study for the development of a data digitization procedure, allowing an efficient management of ordinary maintenance and, where needed, a detailed representation of the state of conserva- tion, structural instabilities, and stratigraphic relationships, which can also be proposed in other contexts.

COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients is difficult to treat. SARS-CoV-2 interaction with the host immune system and the role of therapy still remains only partly understood. There are no data regarding the use of monoclonal antibodies and the combination of two antivirals in fighting viral replication and disease progression. We report the cases of two patients, both treated with rituximab for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and granulomatosis with polyangiitis, respectively, and both hospitalized for COVID-19 with positive SARS-CoV-2 RNAemia, who were successfully treated with a salvage combination therapy with sotrovimab, remdesivir and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir.

The aim of the present map is to illustrate a detailed pre-earthquake hydrogeological conceptual model of the Sibillini Mts. This area was struck by a prolonged seismic sequence of up to Mw 6.5 in 2016. Geological, tectonic, and hydrogeological data were collected from the literature before 2016, subsequently standardized and re-interpretated with the aim of presenting a hydrogeological map (1:50,000 scale) of the Sibillini Mts. carbonate system (Central Italy). The map is supported by 11 hydrogeological both cross and longitudinal sections, which show the underground spatial relationship between aquifers, aquicludes, and tectonic elements. This Map provides a model of comparison for the new hydrogeological conditions emerging from the post-seismic research.
