International audience; This paper presents a preliminary analytical overview of studies dealing with Arabic-based Youth Language practices (YL). It first provides a quick assessment of the development and evolution of YL studies in different areas of the globe (Europe, USA and Africa). It then reviews YL studies in the Arab world. It ends with a presentation of data collected during a collective research undertaken in four Moroccan cities in 2009-2012. This preliminary state of the Arts indicates a growing interest in Arabic-based YL starting from the 2000s, following the great amount of research on this topic in Western countries in the 1990s. Western and Arab urban contexts show important differences regarding the social components and sociolinguist profiles of the investigated youth groups. However, many similar trends have been recorded both at the level of YL linguistic features and youth discursive practices. Studies on Arabic-based Youth Language practices cover a large range of domains: written and oral uses, interaction within peer-group, artistic performances. The paper questions the role and place of YL as factors of language and cultural change.

Exposure to academic language in preschool classrooms has the potential to provide English language learners valuable practice in academic language registers, a precursor to later success in literacy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of a multi-touch table app as a setting for a teacher delivered conversational prompts for preschool students. In this study, forty-two preschool students participated in an experiment in which ELL oral language production was measured while at they were playing with a multi-touch table. The research design was a multiple baseline single-case design (SCD) with pre-post assessments. Proximal measures of change in the quality and quantity of case-study student language were measured through a qualitative analysis of transcribed video sessions and continuous vocabulary assessments. Distal measures of language change were measured pre- and post-intervention with The Boehm Test of Basic Concepts-3 Preschool, and the Preschool Emergent Literacy Indicators test (PELI). Visual analysis of the SCD graph and proximal vocabulary measures provides reasonable evidence that the intervention likely accounted for the positive changes in the quality and quantity of student utterances. These changes in student language behavior did not transfer to the distal measures of general language skills. The data corroborate previous research describing the generally non-verbal nature of student interaction with screen-based tools, like the touch-table, in a business as usual condition. Productive talk is apparent mainly when a skilled adult was present and active in encouraging student interaction. Data show that in the treatment phase, ELL student academic language production mirrored the baseline phase data of their high-language peers. In addition, ELL tier 3 vocabulary acquisition was strong into the maintenance phase of the study. International audience; Cet article présente Trois expériences théâtrales à Rabat dans les années 2008-2013 qui témoignent de l'émergence et dynamisme d'une nouvelle scène culturelle et théâtrale

Cet ouvrage collectif rassemble quatre contributions qui présentent des travaux sur les pratiques de jeunes locuteurs en France et en Afrique du Nord. Des chercheuses et chercheurs de différents ancrages disciplinaires (sociolinguistique, dialectologie arabe et anthropologie linguistique) et de différents pays (Espagne, États-Unis, France, Maroc) proposent des analyses linguistiques et sociolinguistiques de divers aspects (phonétiques, lexicaux, morphologiques, discursifs et interactionnels) des usages juvéniles de plusieurs villes, au Maroc, en Libye et en France. Ces descriptions et analyses de pratiques situées sont de première importance pour le Maroc, contexte sociolinguistique pour lequel elles font à ce jour encore relativement défaut. Les usages langagiers analysés sont mis en perspective avec des questions qui touchent la construction sociolinguistique de positionnements et d’identités, particulièrement en lien avec les questions de genre.
