152. The large $N$ limit of the topological susceptibility of Yang-Mills gauge theory

Abstract

We present a precise computation of the topological susceptibility $\chi_{_\mathrm{YM}}$ of SU$(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the large $N$ limit. The computation is done on the lattice, using high-statistics Monte Carlo simulations with $N=3, 4, 5, 6$ and three different lattice spacings. Two major improvements make it possible to go to finer lattice spacing and larger $N$ compared to previous works. First, the topological charge is implemented through the gradient flow definition; and second, open boundary conditions in the time direction are employed in order to avoid the freezing of the topological charge. The results allow us to extrapolate the dimensionless quantity $t_0^2\chi_{_\mathrm{YM}}$ to the continuum and large $N$ limits with confidence. Abstract

We compute the topological susceptibility of the SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the large-N limit with a percent level accuracy. This is achieved by measuring the gradient-flow definition of the susceptibility at three values of the lattice spacing for N=3,4,5,6. Thanks to this coverage of parameter space, we can extrapolate the results to the large-N and continuum limits with confidence. Abstract

We study the possibility of using multilevel algorithms for the computation of correlation functions of gradient flow observables. For each point in the correlation function an approximate flow is defined which depends only on links in a subset of the lattice. Together with a local action this allows for independent updates and consequently a convergence of the Monte Carlo process faster than the inverse square root of the number of measurements. We demonstrate the feasibility of this idea in the correlation functions of the topological charge and the energy density., Comment: Minor modifications to the text. 160. Neurofeedback of theta and beta frequencies : effects on selective attention and response inhibition

Abstract

Despite the widespread employment of electroencephalographic (EEG) neurofeedback (NF) in clinical and cognitive enhancement contexts, its impact on selective attention and response inhibition remains poorly understood. The present research investigated the influence of theta frequency suppression and low-beta frequencies enhancement on these cognitive functions. A first study investigated the differential impact of the sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) and beta1 amplitude enhancement NF on event-related potentials (ERP) and behavioral measures indexing selective attention and response inhibition in the three-stimuli oddball and in the cued-Go/Nogo tasks. The learning curves evinced training-specific amplitude increments in the beta1 but not in the SMR frequency. However, SMR NF was associated with increased Go-P3 amplitude, decreased mean RT and RT SD, while control and beta1 NF were associated with increased false alarm rates in the cued-Go/Nogo. A second study attempted to understand whether performance increments in selective attention and response inhibition could be explained by theta suppression NF when compared to beta1 NF in the same task conditions. Within-session theta amplitude was decreased in theta relative to beta1 NF in passive resting state but not during feedback trials. However, for both theta and beta1 NF there was no evidence of training-specific amplitude changes relative to controls. Regarding selective attention, the mean RT was increased following beta1 NF and decreased after theta NF but not in the same task conditions. This study also failed to provide evidence of increased or decreased performance in response inhibition. In conclusion, the present research was not conclusive regarding the NF conditions that might have contributed to improvements in target processing efficiency and cancellation of a previously prepared response in previous studies. Specific proposals to address several methodological limitations that might have hindered the possibility of detecting frequency-specific amplitude changes and cognitive improvements were advanced.

Abstract

BackgroundPhotoimmunotherapy (PIT) uses a target-specific photosensitizer based on a near-infrared (NIR) phthalocyanine dye, IR700, to induce tumor necrosis after irradiation with NIR light to kill cancer cells, such as those that remain after surgery. The purpose of the present study was to sterilize the surgical bed after pancreatic cancer resection with PIT in carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-expressing, patient-derived, orthotopic xenograft (PDOX) nude mouse models.MethodsAfter confirmation of tumor engraftment, mice were randomized to two groups: bright light surgery (BLS)-only and BLS + PIT. Each treatment arm consisted of seven tumor-bearing mice. BLS was performed under standard bright-field with an MVX10 long-working distance, high-magnification microscope on all mice. For BLS + PIT, anti-CEA antibody conjugated with IR700 (anti-CEA-IR700) (50 µg) was injected intravenously in all mice 24 h before surgery. After the surgery, the resection bed was then irradiated with a red-light-emitting diode at 690 ± 5 nm with a power density of 150 mW/cm(2).ResultsAnti-CEA-IR700 labelled and illuminated the pancreatic cancer PDOX. Minimal residual cancer of the PDOX was detected by fluorescence after BLS. The local recurrence rate was 85.7 % for BLS-only and 28.6 % for BLS + PIT-treated mice (p = 0.05). The average recurrent tumor weight was 1149.0 ± 794.6 mg for BLS-only and 210.8 ± 336.9 mg for BLS + PIT-treated mice (p = 0.015).ConclusionAnti-CEA-IR700 was able to label and illuminate a pancreatic cancer PDOX nude mouse model sufficiently for PIT. PIT reduced recurrence by eliminating remaining residual cancer cells after BLS.

Abstract

In small populations and scattered communities, wastewater treatment through vegetation filters (VFs), a nature-based solution, has proved to be feasible, especially for nutrient and organic matter removal. However, the presence of pharmaceuticals in wastewater and their potential to infiltrate through the vadose zone and reach groundwater is a drawback in the evaluation of VF performances. Soil amended with readily labile carbon sources, such as woodchips, enhances microbial activity and sorption processes, which could improve pharmaceutical attenuation in VFs. The present study aims to assess if woodchip amendments to a VF's soil are able to abate concentrations of selected pharmaceuticals in the infiltrating water by quantitatively describing the occurring processes through reactive transport modelling. Thus, a column experiment using soil collected from an operating VF and poplar woodchips was conducted, alongside a column containing only soil used as reference. The pharmaceuticals acetaminophen, naproxen, atenolol, caffeine, carbamazepine, ketoprofen and sulfamethoxazole were applied daily to the column inlet, mimicking a real irrigation pattern and periodically measured in the effluent. Ketoprofen was the only injected pharmaceutical that reached the column outlet of both systems within the experimental timeframe. The absence of acetaminophen, atenolol, caffeine, carbamazepine, naproxen and sulfamethoxazole in both column outlets indicates that they were attenuated even without woodchips. However, the presence of 10,11-epoxy carbamazepine and atenolol acid as transformation products (TPs) suggests that incomplete degradation also occurs and that the effect of the amendment on the infiltration of TPs is compound-specific. Modelling allowed us to generate breakthrough curves of ketoprofen in both columns and to obtain transport parameters during infiltration. Woodchip-amended columns exhibited Kd and μw values from one to two orders of magnitude higher compared to soil column. This augmentation of sorption and biodegradation processes significantly enhanced the removal of ketoprofen to over 96%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Los modelos de programación lineal se han constituido en una herramienta eficaz en el campo de la administración y la economía, su aporte es fundamental en uno de las campos más complejos de la administración, contribuyendo de forma sistemática en la toma de decisiones, en este trabajo no fue la excepción, ya que con la implementación de un modelo de programación entera, fue posible reducir la fuerza laboral de la empresa en un 65 %, permitiendo una reducción, en los costos de operación y mantenimiento de 36 %, además fue capaz de programar el horario de las actividades que los obreros debían cumplir a diario en el campo, permitiendo que estas fueran desarrolladas por cada obrero designado en un lapso de cinco días por semana.
