151. Blister formation and hydrogen retention in aluminium and beryllium: A modeling and experimental approach

Abstract

Experiments were performed in a low pressure-high density plasma reactor in order to study the impact of hydrogen retention in aluminium under plasma conditions. Microscopy scans of the surface were performed before and after 1h plasma exposure (fluence 6.1 ×1023ions/m2) where it is seen that blisters start to nucleate at the grain boundaries. Investigation on blister growth kinetics was performed for fluences ranging between 6 ×1023 and 3.7 ×1024ions/m2. The evolution of the characteristic size of the projected area was also analyzed. Finally, a macroscopic rate equations (MRE) code was used to simulate hydrogen retention and diffusion in Al and bubble growth in the bulk was simulated using experimental results. This model was also used to simulate these phenomena in Be and compare its behavior with respect to Al.

Abstract

Edgar Morin aura consacré au cinéma deux décennies de recherche, de 1945 à 1965, une période qui peut sembler de courte durée à l’aune de son importante carrière mais qui peut aussi être considérée comme fondamentale puisqu’elle se situe à l’origine de sa pensée. Ses activités sont alors partagées entre réflexions théoriques, avec la parution de deux livres majeurs : Le cinéma ou l’homme imaginaire (1956) et Les stars (1957), et expériences de réalisation cinématographique, avec Chronique d’un été (1961), un film qui l’associe à Jean Rouch et qui révolutionna le cinéma documentaire. L’ouvrage interroge la singularité de ses propositions en restituant les contextes intellectuels et épistémologiques à partir desquels il a développé son projet d’anthropologie sociologique. Et l’étude de Chronique d’un été permet d’observer à travers les dispositifs les implications du geste filmé dans sa capacité à révéler l’être au monde. Autant de réflexions qui restituent l’importance et la singularité des propositions cinématographiques de Morin, retrouvant de la sorte la dimension politique du voir et du savoir.

Abstract

Cette contribution vise à interroger la construction sociale du geste cinématographique dans la constitution du savoir anthropologique. Edgar Morin défend que l’homme est tout à la fois un individu biologique et un acteur social, dont le cinéma est à même de saisir la complexité. Pourtant l’image demeure encore secondaire pour l’analyse des faits sociaux en anthropologie. En effet, l’attitude la plus répandue dans cette discipline, qui consiste à remettre en cause non pas la force de l’image, mais la manière dont elle est fabriquée et transmise, n’a pas permis au geste cinématographique de prendre l’ampleur qu’il aurait dû naturellement recouvrir en sciences humaines. L’instrumentation audiovisuelle demeure aujourd’hui encore marginale dans les cursus d’anthropologie générale, et gagnerait à se souvenir des préceptes des pionniers (Margaret Mead, André Leroi-Gourhan) afin de repenser sa place dans la recherche scientifique. This contribution aims to question the social construction at work in the act of filmmaking as anthropological knowledge is produced. Edgar Morin defends the idea that man is both a biological individual and a social actor, the complexity of which the cinema is able to grasp. Yet the moving image still remains secondary for the analysis of social facts in anthropology. Indeed, the most widespread attitude in this discipline, which consists in questioning not the strength of the image, but the way in which it is produced and transmitted, has not allowed the act of filmmaking to gain the momentum which it should naturally have enjoyed in human sciences. Audiovisual instrumentation is still marginal today in general anthropology courses, and would benefit from remembering the precepts of the pioneers (Margaret Mead, André Leroi-Gourhan) in order to rethink its place in scientific research.

Abstract

A growing portion of scientists realises the need to not only alert about climate change, but also change their professional practices. A range of tools have emerged to promote more sustainable activities, yet many scientists struggle to go beyond simple awareness-raising to create concrete transition actions. Here we propose a game-based transition support system MaTerre180', which has been designed to build scenarios of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in the academic community. After providing a common scientific background about the context (global warming issue, its causes and consequences) and setting up a challenge (50% reduction of carbon budget by 2030), the participants belonging to the academic community and its governance bodies immerse themselves into fictional characters, to simulate the behaviour of real research groups. The game has been deployed during the year 2021, with six hundred participants from nine countries and 50 cities. Results explore clear pathways for GHG reductions between 25 and 60%, and a median reduction of 46%. The alternatives allowing the greatest reduction are video communication tools (36%), followed by mutualization of professional activities and voluntary cancellation or reduction, that represent 22 and 14% of reduction, respectively. The remaining 28% of reduction consists of transport alternative, relocation of professional activities, extended duration of some travels, etc. In addition, the analyses pointed out the importance of the guided negotiation phase to bring out some alternatives such as relocation, local partners and computing optimization. An added value of this transition support system is that the information it collects (anonymously) will be used to answer pressing research questions in climate change science and environmental psychology regarding the use of serious games for promoting changes in attitudes and behaviours towards sustainability, and including broader questions on how network structures

Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out for calculating the surface loss probabilities of neutral species from an argon–methane plasma. These probabilities are the sum of the sticking and surface recombination probabilities. This study considers both the formation of reactive and nonreactive volatile species for evaluating recombination probabilities. Results show that stable species are reflected when hydrocarbon film starts growing on the surface. CH3 is mainly lost by surface recombination leading to the formation of volatile products while very little contributes to film growth. C2H has surface loss probability in agreement with the literature. While C2H loss is usually attributed to sticking on the surface, our results show that its main loss process is due to surface recombination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

181. Ecological pathways to prevention: How does the SASA! community mobilisation model work to prevent physical intimate partner violence against women?

Abstract

Abstract Background Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a global public health concern. While community-level gender norms and attitudes to IPV are recognised drivers of IPV risk, there is little evidence on how interventions might tackle these drivers to prevent IPV at the community-level. This secondary analysis of data from the SASA! study explores the pathways through which SASA!, a community mobilisation intervention to prevent violence against women, achieved community-wide reductions in physical IPV. Methods From 2007 to 2012 a cluster randomised controlled trial (CRT) was conducted in eight communities in Kampala, Uganda. Cross-sectional surveys of a random sample of community members, aged 18–49, were undertaken at baseline (n = 1583) and 4 years post intervention implementation (n = 2532). We used cluster-level intention to treat analysis to estimate SASA!’s community-level impact on women’s past year experience of physical IPV and men’s past year perpetration of IPV. The mediating roles of community-, relationship- and individual-level factors in intervention effect on past year physical IPV experience (women)/perpetration (men) were explored using modified Poisson regression models. Results SASA! was associated with reductions in women’s past year experience of physical IPV (0.48, 95 % CI 0.16–1.39), as well as men’s perpetration of IPV (0.39, 95 % CI 0.20–0.73). Community-level normative attitudes were the most important mediators of intervention impact on physical IPV risk, with norms around the acceptability of IPV explaining 70 % of the intervention effect on women’s experience of IPV and 95 % of the effect on men’s perpetration. The strongest relationship-level mediators were men’s reduced suspicion of partner infidelity (explaining 22 % of effect on men’s perpetration), and improved communication around sex (explaining 16 % of effect on women’s experience). Reduced acceptability of IPV among men was the most important individual-level mediator (explaining 42 % of effect on men’s perpetration). Conclusions These results highlight the important role of community-level norm-change in achieving community-wide reductions in IPV risk. They lend strong support for the more widespread adoption of community-level approaches to preventing violence. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00790959 . Registered 13th November 2008. 183. Projecting the evolution of the urban climate of metropolitan French cities using a convection-permitting model

Abstract

Urban areas will not be spared from the effect of climate change and will face more and more extreme weather events (e.g., heatwaves and floods). Such changes already cause severe environmental issues, economics damages, and many casualties, especially in cities where most activities and populations are concentrated. Evaluating the impacts of future extreme events on urban areas is a major challenge to prepare the adaptation.Urban areas are very complex systems that require specific modeling tools. The latest advances in regional climate modeling allow simulations to be performed over longer time periods with finer horizontal resolutions of up to few kilometers. The scientific community emphasizes the considerable improvements in using Convection-Permitting Models (CPM), especially for the representation of small-scale phenomena. Also, CPMs offer an interesting modeling framework for studying the interaction between regional climate and urban effects (especially urban heat island) and city-scale impacts through the explicit coupling of the atmospheric climate model with a dedicated urban surface model.In this study, the CNRM-AROME CPM, coupled with the Town Energy Balance (TEB) urban-canopy model, is used at 2.5-km horizontal resolution. Climate simulations were performed on an extended France domain (northwestern Europe) as part of the EUropean Climate Prediction system (EUCP) project over an historical period (1986-2005) and two future periods (mid-term, 2041-2050 and long-term, 2080-2099) using the RCP8.5 emission scenario. Here, scientific objectives are (1) to evaluate the urban heat island evolution for some metropolitan French cities, and (2) to quantify the evolution of specific meteorological hazards on cities and population. With this aim, we selected indicators related to heatwaves (based on Ouzeau et al. (2016) methodology) and heavy precipitation event, considered as some of the most relevant extreme meteorological events. These indicators were tested and evaluated on the evaluation simulation, and then analyzed in a changing climate to quantify the impacts on the cities. The multi-city approach makes it possible to investigate the variability that can exist between cities depending on their geographical and climatic contexts.

Abstract

T cell search behavior is dictated by their need to encounter their specific antigen to eliminate target cells. However, mechanisms controlling effector T cell motility are highly tissue-dependent. Specifically, how diabetogenic T cells encounter their target beta cells in dispersed islets throughout the pancreas (PA) during autoimmune diabetes remains unclear. Using intra-vital 2-photon microscopy in a mouse model of diabetes, we found that CXCR3 chemokine downregulated CD8+ T cell motility specifically within islets, promoting effector cell confinement to their target sites. By contrast, T cell velocity and directionality in the exocrine tissue were enhanced along blood vessels and extracellular matrix fibers. This guided migration implicated integrin-dependent interactions, since integrin blockade impaired exocrine T cell motility. In addition, integrin β1 blockade decreased CD4+ T cell effector phenotype specifically in the PA. Thus, we unveil an important role for integrins in the PA during autoimmune diabetes that may have important implications for the design of new therapies.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To calculate the necessary pseudophakic intraocular lens (IOL) power to approximate emmetropia in adult tigers. ANIMALS 17 clinically normal adult tigers. PROCEDURES 33 eyes of 17 clinically normal adult tigers underwent routine ophthalmic examination and B-scan ultrasonography while anesthetized for unrelated procedures. Specific ultrasound data (globe measurements and corneal curvature) and estimated postoperative IOL positions were utilized to calculate predicted IOL power by use of Retzlaff and Binkhorst theoretical formulas. Applanation tonometry and refraction were also performed. RESULTS Mean ± SD axial globe length was 29.36 ± 0.82 mm, preoperative anterior chamber depth was 7.00 ± 0.74 mm, and crystalline lens thickness was 8.72 ± 0.56 mm. Mean net refractive error (n = 33 eyes) was +0.27 ± 0.30 diopters (D). By use of the Retzlaff formula, mean predicted IOL power for the postoperative anterior chamber depth (PACD), PACD – 2 mm, and PACD + 2 mm was 43.72 ± 4.84 D, 37.62 ± 4.19 D, and 51.57 ± 5.72 D, respectively. By use of the Binkhorst equation, these values were 45.11 ± 4.91 D, 38.84 ± 4.25 D, and 53.18 ± 5.81 D, respectively. Mean intraocular pressure for all eyes was 14.7 ± 2.69 mm Hg. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The calculated tiger IOL was lower than reported values for adult domestic felids. Further studies evaluating actual PACD and pseudophakic refraction would help determine the appropriate IOL power to achieve emmetropia in this species.

Abstract

Abstract Background Intimate partner violence (IPV) poses a major public health concern. To date there are few rigorous economic evaluations of interventions aimed at preventing IPV in low-income settings. This study provides a cost and cost effectiveness analysis of SASA!, a community mobilisation intervention to change social norms and prevent IPV. Methods An economic evaluation alongside a cluster randomised controlled trial. Both financial and economic costs were collected retrospectively from the provider’s perspective to generate total and unit cost estimates over four years of intervention programming. Univariate sensitivity analysis is conducted to estimate the impact of uncertainty in cost and outcome measures on results. Results The total cost of developing the SASA! Activist Kit is estimated as US$138,598. Total intervention costs over four years are estimated as US$553,252. The annual cost of supporting 351 activists to conduct SASA! activities was approximately US$389 per activist and the average cost per person reached in intervention communities was US$21 over the full course of the intervention, or US$5 annually. The primary trial outcome was past year experience of physical IPV with an estimated 1201 cases averted (90 % CI: 97–2307 cases averted). The estimated cost per case of past year IPV averted was US$460. Conclusion This study provides the first economic evaluation of a community mobilisation intervention aimed at preventing IPV. SASA! unit costs compare favourably with gender transformative interventions and support services for survivors of IPV. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov # NCT00790959

Abstract

Most people living with HIV need antiretroviral therapy to control their infection and experience viral relapse in case of treatment interruption, because of viral reservoir (proviruses) persistence. Knowing that proviruses are very diverse and most of them are defective in treated individuals, we aimed to characterize the HIV blood reservoirs of posttreatment controllers (PTCs), rare models of drug-free remission, in comparison with spontaneous controllers and treated individuals.
