According to current estimates, the annual volume of crude oil entering the ocean due to both anthropogenic activities and naturally occurring seepages reaches approximately 8.3 million metric tons. Huge discharges from accidents have caused large-scale environmental disasters with extensive damage to the marine ecosystem. The natural clean-up of petroleum spills in marine environments is carried out primarily by naturally occurring obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (OHCB). The natural hosts of OHCB include a range of marine primary producers, unicellular photosynthetic eukaryotes and cyanobacteria, which have been documented as both, suppliers of hydrocarbon-like compounds that fuel the ‘cryptic’ hydrocarbon cycle and as a source of isolation of new OHCB. A very new body of evidence suggests that OHCB are not only the active early stage colonizers of plastics and hence the important component of the ocean’s ‘plastisphere’ but also encode an array of enzymes experimentally proven to act on petrochemical and bio-based polymers. eng

Suicide is a leading cause of death internationally, and self-harm significantly increases the risk of suicide (Hawton et al., 2015; World Health Organization, 2014). To tackle this global health crisis a multisystem, inter-faceted, joined-up approach across health and social care, education, judicial, financial, and voluntary sectors is needed. Within this, the health setting of primary care holds unlocked potential for suicide prevention (Michail et al., 2020). In this editorial, we outline the importance of focusing on primary care for suicide prevention and introduce a new special interest group for the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

Tawaya armeniaca Ponomarenko, M. Omelko et N. Omelko sp. n. Type material. Holotype: ♂, Borneo, E Malaysia, state of Sabah, 24 km N Tawau, 18.08.2019 (leg. M. Omelko). Paratypes: 5♂, 5♀, same locality, 17.08– 05.09.2019 (leg. M. Omelko); GS 154 (♂), 158 (♀) MP. Diagnosis. The new species is easily distinguished by characters of the male genitalia: the tegumen has a knob on the posterior margin; the processes of the juxta are dilated into wide trapezoidal plates, distally bearing strong thorns on the outer margin; and the aedeagus has ribbon-like sclerotization expanded into an oval plate apically on the left side. The female genitalia are distinguished by the sternal part of the 8 th segment represented by triangular plates and the antrum cup-shaped. In contrast, in the closely species T. luteola and T. rutila, tegumen lacks a knob on the posterior margin; the juxta processes narrow distally or are slightly dilated before their apices and lack thorns; the aedeagus lacks a distal expansion; and the female has a transverse band-like sclerotization on the 8 th segment and the antrum is narrow with sclerotized sides. Adult (Figs 6, 7). Head pale sandy. Antennal scape pale sandy in proximal part and distally, in distal part with blackish or brownish band; flagellum with pale sandy or whitish segments alternating with segments having a black upper surface, distal part with 1–3 alternating pale sandy or whitish and 1–3 black segments. Labial palpus with basal segment brownish; second segment brown and white-ringed distally; third segment white, black-ringed near base, beyond middle and with black apex. Forewing length 2.5–2.8 mm. Forewing ground colour yellowish-red; proximal part with two indistinct brownish strokes; at middle a black spot in whitish border and with indistinct brownish strigula under it; apical part with two black spots—costal and subdorsal, both in whitish border and with brownish indistinct strigula posteriorly; a row of black dots along costal margin and termen in apical part. Fringe yellowish-red along costa and termen in apical part of wing, dark-grey along dorsal margin. Hindwing and fringe dark-grey in male, dark sandy in female. Legs pale sandy or sandy, with darkening on fore- and mid-tibiae and tarsi of all legs. Forelegs tibia with white spot in middle and white-ringed distally; mid-leg tibia with raised elongate scales on outer surface in proximal part and pale sandy rings in middle part and distally; proximal part of hind tibia with a brush of pale sandy hair-like scales on lateral and medial sides. Male genitalia (Figs 19‒21). Tegumen sub-rhomboidal, with sclerotized lateral margins, oval anteriorly, with triangularly pointed lobe on posterior edge. Cucullus digitate, evenly narrowing at middle, slightly inflated basally, with dense crest of flattened chaetae along rounded apex, with large quadrangular basal process. Aedeagus long, exceeding total length of genitalia, tubular, with almost parallel sides in proximal 0.5; left side of distal part with ribbon-like sclerotization expanded into an oval plate apically. Ejaculatory duct entering along longitudinal axis. Vinculum, juxta, and probably sacculi fused into a single ventral sclerite surrounding aedeagus latero-ventrally; distal processes of juxta dilated into wide trapezoidal plates, each bearing three short strong thorns distally. Saccus relatively narrow and long, its width 0.2 times that of base. Female genitalia (Fig. 26). Ovipositor short, membrane between 8 th and 9 th segments ca/ 0.5 length of papillae anales, with large, membranous sack (of uncertain function) arising from near posterior margin of 8 th tergite. Papillae anales sclerotized, moderate in length, 0.75 length of apophyses posteriores. Apophyses anteriores and apophyses posteriores of equal length. 8 th segment splitted ventrally, with narrow membranous insertion between sternal trapezoidal sclerites. Ostium at level of anterior margin of 8 th segment. Antrum cup-shaped. Ductus bursae tube-like, membranous. Tawaya rutila M. Omelko, Ponomarenko et N. Omelko sp. n. Type material. Holotype: ♂, Borneo, E Malaysia, state of Sabah, 24 km N Tawau, 21.08.2019 (leg. M. Omelko). Paratypes: 1♂, 2♀, same locality, 18.08– 03.09.2019 (leg. M. Omelko); GS 155 (♂), 159 (♀) MP. Diagnosis. The new species can be easily separated by the rhomboidal shape of the tegumen, the presence of medial triangular lobes in the distal part of the juxtal processes, and the aedeagus with an arched sclerotization beyond the middle in the male genitalia; and by the 8 th segment with a transverse band-like sclerite ventrally, the narrow antrum with lateral sclerotized sides, and the culliculum with a twisted sclerotization in the female genitalia. In contrast, in T. luteola there are no lobes in the distal part of the processes of the juxta in the male genitalia; and a colliculum and transverse band-like sclerite ventrally in the 8 th segment are lacking, and the antrum has a different shape in the female genitalia. Adult (Figs 3, 4). Head pale sandy, yellowish-brown, or dark grey. Antennal scape whitish with black band at middle; flagellum with alternating white and black segments in proximal part, and with alternating one white and two black segments in distal part. Basal segment of labial palpus brownish or blackish; second segment brownish or blackish, white-ringed distally; third segment white, with two black rings at base and before apical third. Forewing length 2.2–2.7 mm. Forewing yellowish-brown, with two blackish indistinct spots in proximal part, distal part with two black spots at middle and in apical part near dorsal margin, both spots bordered by whitish scales and each with black strigula dorsad; apical part with a row of black dots along costal part and termen. Fringe yellowish-brown along wing apex and termen, dark grey along dorsal margin. Hindwing and fringe dark grey. Legs pale sandy or sandy laterally, with blackish or fuscous tibiae and tarsi. Cucullus slightly narrowed at 0.66 distally, and weakly inflated towards base, with dense crest of flattened chaetae along rounded apex, with large quadrangular basal process. Aedeagus longer than total length of genitalia, narrow, tubelike basally, with strong arched sclerotization beyond middle, curved to right at 0.66 distally, distal 0.33 with left side sclerotization. Ejaculatory duct entering along longitudinal axis. Vinculum, juxta, and probably sacculi fused into single ventral sclerite surrounding aedeagus latero-ventrally; distal processes of juxta pointed apically and with triangular lobes limiting mobility of aedeagus dorsally. Tawaya gen. n. and its four new species (T. flaventia sp. n., T. rutila sp. n., T. luteola sp. n. and T. armeniaca sp. n.) are described from Borneo. A key to the described species is provided. The taxonomic position of a new genus within the subfamily Dichomeridinae (Gelechiidae) is proposed based on a combination of molecular and morphological analyses.

A possibility to accurately predict the absorption maximum wavelength of BODIPYs was investigated. We found that previously reported models had a low accuracy (40–57 nm) to predict BODIPYs due to the limited dataset sizes and/or number of BODIPYs (few hundreds). New models developed in this study were based on data of 6000-plus fluorescent dyes (including 4000-plus BODIPYs) and the deep neural network architecture. The high prediction accuracy (five-fold cross-validation room mean squared error (RMSE) of 18.4 nm) was obtained using a consensus model, which was more accurate than individual models. This model provided the excellent accuracy (RMSE of 8 nm) for molecules previously synthesized in our laboratory as well as for prospective validation of three new BODIPYs. We found that solvent properties did not significantly influence the model accuracy since only few BODIPYs exhibited solvatochromism. The analysis of large prediction errors suggested that compounds able to have intermolecular interactions with solvent or salts were likely to be incorrectly predicted. International audience; Evolution of virulence traits from adaptation to environmental niches other than the host is probably a common feature of marine microbial pathogens, whose knowledge might be crucial to understand their emergence and pathogenetic potential. Here we report genome sequence analysis of a novel marine bacterial species, Vibrio bathopelagicus sp. nov., isolated from warm bathypelagic waters (3309m depth) of the Mediterranean Sea. Interestingly, V. bathopelagicus sp. nov. is closely related to coastal Vibrio strains pathogenic to marine bivalves. V. bathopelagicus sp. nov. genome encodes genes involved in environmental adaptations to the deep-sea but also in virulence, such as the R5.7 element, MARTX toxin cluster, Type VI secretion system and zinc-metalloprotease, previously associated with Vibrio infection in farmed oysters. The results of functional in vitro assays on immunocytes (hemocytes) of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, and of the early larval development assay in Mytilus support strong toxicity of V. bathopelagicus sp. nov. towards bivalves. V. bathopelagicus sp. nov., isolated from a remote Mediterranean bathypelagic site, is an example of a planktonic marine bacterium with genotypic and phenotypic traits associated with animal pathogenicity, that might have played an evolutionary role in the origin of coastal marine pathogens.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. Among patients with AF the subgroup posessing AF without traditional risk factors is differentiated. Such patients are commonly referred as having lone AF and comprise 1020% of all cases. A number of studies have demonstrated that the background of AF, and in particular lone AF, have a substantial genetic component. Aims: To evaluate the influence of gene polymorphism to the development of atrial fibrillation in patients without concomitant valvular pathology and coronary artery disease. Materials and methods: The study included 174 patients with atrial fibrillation and 124 controls without any cardiovascular pathology. All patients were divided into two subgroups: with lone AF (n=94) and with concomitant arterial hypertension (n=80). All patients underwent a complex of clinical, instrumental (ECG, echocardiography, computed tomography of the pulmonary veins) and laboratory tests (thyroid hormones, inflammatory markers, fibrosis), as well as genetic analysis (determination of single nucleotide polymorphisms described as AF risk factors in genes AGXT2, PDE4D, SLN, SCN5A, PITX2, PRRX1, ZFHX3, TBX5, CAV1 и HCN4). Results: For the rare polymorphisms rs12291814 (SLN) and rs137854601 (SCN5A) wasnt found anyone carrier of the minor allele (C and A, respectively). In the both patient subgroups the minor allele T of rs2200733 in PITX2 (OR=3.18, p0.0001), minor allele G of rs3903239 in PRRX1, and minor alleles A of 2 polymorphisms rs2106261 and rs7193343 in ZFHX3 gene were revealed as risk factor of AF (OR=2.96, p0.0001, OR=2.02, p=0.0045, OR=1.64, p=0.04, respectively). We also revealed significant difference between AF and control groups for rs3807989 in CAV1: homozygotic state of minor allele A has a protective effect on the development of arrhythmias (OR=0.39). Conclusions: We revealed the association between the polymorphisms in genes regulating transcription and the development of atrial fibrillation. These polymorphisms have already described but their frequencies have never investigated in Russian population. But the polymorphisms influence to gene functions stays unclear, although attempts to investigate relationship between genotype and gene expression have been made. When the relationship will be discovered it can help us to modify our approach in treatment to patients with atrial fibrillation.

Marine sediments represent an important sink of harmful petroleum hydrocarbons after an accidental oil spill. Electrobioremediation techniques, which combine electrokinetic transport and biodegradation processes, represent an emerging technological platform for a sustainable remediation of contaminated sediments. Here, we describe the results of a long-term mesocosm-scale electrobioremediation experi- ment for the treatment of marine sediments contaminated by crude oil. A dimensionally stable anode and a stainless-steel mesh cathode were employed to drive seawater electrolysis at a fixed current density of 11 A/m2. This approach allowed establishing conditions conducive to contaminants biodeg- radation, as confirmed by the enrichment of Alcanivorax borkumensis cells harboring the alkB-gene and other aerobic hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria. When growing a greenhouse tomato, labor inputs for handling and tying of plants are high. In this regard, it is important to investigate the features of plant growth and create varieties and hybrids for intensive technologies, requiring a minimum of labor inputs for plant care and having a complex of valuable agronomic features. The purpose of the research presented in this article was the selection of tomato hybrid combinations, characterized by high values of productivity signs, low intensity of stem shoot growth and indeterminate type of growth. To achieve the main goal, we studied the growth characteristics of stem shoots and the manifestation of agronomic traits of F1 hybrids Toroza x Line 7, Line 7 x Toroza, Line 7 x Mo 516, C 9464 x Mo 516, C 9464 s Toroza, Line 19/3 x Mo 516, Line 19/3 x Toroza, Line 19/0 x Toroza, Line 19/0 x Mo 516, together with the parent samples. The peculiarities of lateral shoot development and yield signs were investigated in two variants: without breaking-out laterals and with removal of stem shoots on a weekly basis. The dynamics of laterals growth was estimated on plants of the studied samples, which were planted separately, in the course of 30 days after removing previously formed lateral shoots. The hybrids with Line 7 and indeterminate hybrid C 9464 x Mo 516 are characterized by high values of productivity traits. The superiority of indeterminate hybrids was noted in both variants of the experiment on grounds of commercial and total yield. The advantage of the variant "without removing laterals" has been established in yield background. Hybrids F1 Line 19/0 x Mo 516 and Line 19/3 x Thoroza can be recommended as valuable breeding samples, because of high productivity level, low intensity of lateral shoot growth and indeterminate type of growth.

The article studies the mutual influence of electrical and thermal processes due to their simultaneous occurrence in the printed circuit assemblies of optoelectronic devices (OEDs) in real operating conditions. An increase in the accuracy of computer modeling of electrical and thermal processes can be achieved by switching from the separate modeling of these processes used in engineering practice to their joint simultaneous modeling according to the proposed unified integrated electrothermal model. The authors use the existing in physics electrothermal analogy of mathematical descriptions of these processes. The resulting loads of heat dissipations power and temperatures of electrical radio products placed on the OED printed circuit boards makes it possible to identify hidden potential failures in them during design. When using integrated digital twin, it is possible to identify pre-failure situations during the operation of the OED.

Astrobiology is mistakenly regarded by some as a field confined to studies of life beyond Earth. Here, we consider life on Earth through an astrobiological lens. Whereas classical studies of microbiology historically focused on various anthropocentric sub-fields (such as fermented foods or commensals and pathogens of crop plants, livestock and humans), addressing key biological questions via astrobiological approaches can further our understanding of all life on Earth. We highlight potential implications of this approach through the articles in this Environmental Microbiology special issue ‘Ecophysiology of Extremophiles’. They report on the microbiology of places/processes including low-temperature environments and chemically diverse saline- and hypersaline habitats; aspects of sulphur metabolism in hypersaline lakes, dysoxic marine waters, and thermal acidic springs; biology of extremophile viruses; the survival of terrestrial extremophiles on the surface of Mars; biological soils crusts and rock-associated microbes of deserts; subsurface and deep biosphere, including a salticle formed within Triassic halite; and interactions of microbes with igneous and sedimentary rocks. These studies, some of which we highlight here, contribute to our understanding of the spatiotemporal reach of Earth'sfunctional biosphere, and the tenacity of terrestrial life. Their findings will help set the stage for future work focused on the constraints for life, and how organisms adapt and evolve to circumvent these constraints. The criteria for the selection of the materials of the plate piezoelectric transducers and the acoustic duct of the sensitive element of the angular velocity sensors are determined. The following materials are considered for piezo plates: quartz (SiO 2 ), lithium niobate (LiNbO 3 ) and lithium tantalate (LiTaO 3 ), as well as langasite (La 3 Ga 5 SiO 14 ). Based on the method proposed earlier by the authors, the optimal cuts for shear wave excitation are found. As the materials of the acoustic duct, quartz, chalcogenide glasses, and several single crystals are considered. As a result, the materials, which provide the optimal design of the sensitive element, are revealed.

This data set includes the results of digital image correlation analysis applied to nine experiments (Table 1) on magma-tectonic interaction performed at the Helmholtz Laboratory for Tectonic Modelling (HelTec) of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam in the framework of EPOS transnational access activities in 2017. The models use silicone oil (PDMS G30M, Rudolf et al., 2016) and Quartz sand (G12, Rosenau et al., 2018) to simulate pre-, syn- and post-tectonic intrusion of granitic magma into upper crustal shear zones of simple shear and transtensional (15° obliquity) kinematics. Three reference experiments (simple shear, transtension, intrusion) are also reported. Detailed descriptions of the experiments can be found in Michail et al. (submitted) to which this data set is supplement. The models have been monitored by means of digital image correlation (DIC) analysis including Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV; Adam et al., 2005) and Structure from Motion photogrammetry (SfM; Donnadieu et al., 2003; Westoby et al., 2012). DIC analysis yields quantitative model surface deformation information by means of 3D surface topography and displacements from which surface strain has been calculated. The data presented here are visualized as surface deformation maps and movies, as well as digital elevation and intrusion models. The results of a shape analysis of the model plutons is provided, too.

The aim of this study was to examine the changes in blood parameters caused during Small-Sides Games (SSGs) in U20 elite players in professional league. The sample consisted of eight U20 Greek Super League elite level soccer players, aged 18.3 ± 1 years old, who participated in six SSG’s (4 vs 4 + 2 GK), each lasting 4 min with 3 min rest. The size of the pitch was 30m in length and 20m wide and the SSGs took place in a pitch with artificial turf. Blood samples were collected before and immediately after the six SSGs to examine any potential changes of the haematological profile and the levels of cell damage. The Wilcoxon Test (Z) and the Effect Size (r) were used to compare the repeated measures of the variables (pre-post), while the Pearson correlation index (r) was used to test the correlation between the variables. The results showed a significant decrease in the second measurement in Rbc (p < .05), Hgb (p < .05), Mcv (p < .01), Mch (p < .05) and Mchc (p < .05). On the contrary, Hct, Rdw and iron concentration did not show a significant change (p > .05). Regarding the elements of the leukocyte series a significant increase was observed in Wbc (p < .01), Neutrophils (p < .05), Plt (p < .05), and Pct (p < .01). On the contrary, a significant decrease was observed in Lymphocytes (p < .05) and Pdw (p < .05). Finally, Monocytes, Eosinophils and Pct did not show any statistically significant change. Overall, the results showed that exercising through high intensity SSGs can cause specific metabolic effects on the haematological profile of soccer players. Soccer teams need to incorporate the monitoring of haematological parameters of players while planning their training program, as this information can influence the performance and overall wellbeing of players. © 2021, Editura Universitatii din Pitesti. Archaea are environmentally ubiquitous on Earth, and their extremophilic and metabolically versatile phenotypes make them useful as model systems for astrobiology. Here, we reveal a new functional group of halo(natrono)archaea able to utilize alpha-d-glucans (amylopectin, amylose and glycogen), sugars, and glycerol as electron donors and carbon sources for sulfur respiration. They are facultative anaerobes enriched from hypersaline sediments with either amylopectin, glucose or glycerol as electron/carbon sources and elemental sulfur as the terminal electron acceptor. They include 10 strains of neutrophilic haloarchaea from circum pH-neutral lakes and one natronoarchaeon from soda-lake sediments. The neutrophilic isolates can grow by fermentation, although addition of S0 or dimethyl sulfoxide increased growth rate and biomass yield (with a concomitant decrease in H2). Natronoarchaeal isolate AArc-S grew only by respiration, either anaerobically with S0 or thiosulfate as the terminal electron acceptor, or aerobically. Through genome analysis of five representative strains, we detected the full set of enzymes required for the observed catabolic and respiratory phenotypes. These findings provide evidence that sulfur-respiring haloarchaea partake in biogeochemical sulfur cycling, linked to terminal anaerobic carbon mineralization in hypersaline anoxic habitats. We discuss the implications for life detection in analogue environments such as the polar subglacial brine-lakes of Mars.
