Search

A route to realize strain engineering in weakly bonded heterostructures is presented. Such heterostructures, consisting of layered materials with a pronounced bond hierarchy of strong and weak bonds within and across their building blocks respectively, are anticipated to grow decoupled from each other. Hence, they are expected to be unsuitable for strain engineering as utilized for conventional materials which are strongly bonded isotropically. Here, it is shown for the first time that superlattices of layered chalcogenides (Sb2Te3/GeTe) behave neither as fully decoupled two-dimensional (2D) materials nor as covalently bonded three-dimensional (3D) materials. Instead, they form a novel class of 3D solids with an unparalleled atomic arrangement, featuring a distribution of lattice constants, which is tunable. A map to identify further material combinations with similar characteristic is given. It opens the way for the design of a novel class of artificial solids with unexplored properties.

We investigated the neural basis of conjoined processing of color and spatial frequency with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A multivariate classification algorithm was trained to differentiate between either isolated color or spatial frequency differences, or between conjoint differences in both feature dimensions. All displays were presented in a singleton search task, avoiding confounds between conjunctive feature processing and search difficulty that arose in previous studies contrasting single feature and conjunction search tasks. Based on patient studies, we expected the right temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) to be involved in conjunctive feature processing. This hypothesis was confirmed in that only conjoined color and spatial frequency differences, but not isolated feature differences could be classified above chance level in this area. Furthermore, we could show that the accuracy of a classification of differences in both feature dimensions was superadditive compared to the classification accuracies of isolated color or spatial frequency differences within the right TPJ. These data provide evidence for the processing of feature conjunctions, here color and spatial frequency, in the right TPJ.

Frontiers in Materials 4, 26 (2017). doi:10.3389/fmats.2017.00026, The application of lattice strain through epitaxial growth of oxide films on lattice mismatched perovskite-like substrates strongly influences the structural properties of ferroelectric domains and their corresponding piezoelectric behavior. The formation of different ferroelectric phases can be understood by a strain-phase diagram, which is calculated within the framework of the Landau–Ginzburg–Devonshire theory. In this paper, we illustrate the opportunity of ferroelectric domain engineering in the KxNa1−xNbO3 lead-free material system. In particular, the following examples are discussed in detail: (i) Different substrates (NdGaO3, SrTiO3, DyScO3, TbScO3, and GdScO3) are used to systematically tune the incorporated epitaxial strain from compressive to tensile. This can be exploited to adjust the NaNbO3 thin film surface orientation and, concomitantly, the vector of electrical polarization, which rotates from mainly vertical to exclusive in-plane orientation. (ii) In ferroelectric NaNbO3, thin films grown on rare-earth scandate substrates, highly regular stripe domain patterns are observed. By using different film thicknesses, these can be tailored with regard to domain periodicity and vertical polarization component. (iii) A featured potassium concentration of x = 0.9 of KxNa1−xNbO3 thin films grown on (110) NdScO3 substrates favors the coexistence of two equivalent, monoclinic, but differently oriented ferroelectric phases. A complicated herringbone domain pattern is experimentally observed which consists of alternating MC and a1a2 domains. The coexistence of different types of ferroelectric domains leads to polarization discontinuities at the domain walls, potentially enabling high piezoelectric responses. The fabrication of nanowires with axial multiquantum wells or disks presenting a homogeneous size and shape distribution along the whole stack is still an unresolved challenge, despite being essential for narrowing their light emission bandwidth. In this work we demonstrate that the commonly observed change in the shape of the disks along the stacking direction proceeds in a systematic, predictable way. High- resolution transmission electron microscopy of stacked (In,Ga)N quantum discs embedded in GaN nanowires with diameters of ∼40 nm and lengths of ∼700 nm and finite element method calculations show that, contrary to what is normally assumed, this change is not related to the radial growth of the nanowires, which is shown to be negligible, but to the strain relaxation of the whole active region. A simple model is proposed to account for the experimental observations. The model assumes that each disk reaches an equilibrium shape that minimizes the overall energy of the system, given by the sum of the surface and strain energies of the disk itself and the barrier below. The strain state of the barrier is affected by the presence of the disk buried directly below in a way that depends on its shape. This gives rise to a cumulative process, which makes the aspect ratio of each quantum disk to be smaller compared to the disk grown just before, in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations. The obtained results imply that strain relaxation is an important factor to bear in mind for the design of multiquantum disks with controlled shape along the stacking direction in any lattice mismatched nanowire system.

Computational techniques are central in many areas of neuroscience, and are relatively easy to share. This paper describes why computer programs underlying scientific publications should be shared, and lists simple steps for sharing. Together with ongoing efforts in data sharing, this should aid reproducibility of research.

A novel concept to obtain a ferroelectric material with enhanced piezoelectric properties is proposed. This approach is based on the combination of two pathways: (i) the evolution of a ferroelectric monoclinic phase and, (ii) the coexistence of different types of ferroelectric domains leading to polarization discontinuities at the domain walls. Each of these pathways enables polarization rotation in the material which is responsible for giant piezoelectricity. We present a systematic theoretical study of the influence of elastic strain relaxation on the built-in electrostatic potentials and the electronic properties of axial [Formula: see text] nanowire (NW) heterostructures. Our simulations reveal that for a sufficiently large ratio between the thickness of the [Formula: see text] disk and the diameter of the NW, the elastic relaxation leads to a significant reduction of the built-in electrostatic potential in comparison to a planar system of similar layer thickness and In content. In this case, the ground state transition energies approach constant values with increasing thickness of the disk and only depend on the In content, a behavior usually associated to that of a quantum well free of built-in electrostatic potentials. We show that the structures under consideration are by no means field-free, and the built-in potentials continue to play an important role even for ultrathin NWs. In particular, strain and the resulting polarization potentials induce complex confinement features of electrons and holes, which depend on the In content, shape, and dimensions of the heterostructure.

Goal-directed behavior in a complex world requires the maintenance of goal-relevant information despite multiple sources of distraction. However, the brain mechanisms underlying distractor-resistant working or short-term memory (STM) are not fully understood. Although early single-unit recordings in monkeys and fMRI studies in humans pointed to an involvement of lateral prefrontal cortices, more recent studies highlighted the importance of posterior cortices for the active maintenance of visual information also in the presence of distraction. Here, we used a delayed match-to-sample task and multivariate searchlight analyses of fMRI data to investigate STM maintenance across three extended delay phases. Participants maintained two samples (either faces or houses) across an unfilled pre-distractor delay, a distractor-filled delay, and an unfilled post-distractor delay. STM contents (faces vs. houses) could be decoded above-chance in all three delay phases from occipital, temporal, and posterior parietal areas. Classifiers trained to distinguish face versus house maintenance successfully generalized from pre- to post-distractor delays and vice versa, but not to the distractor delay period. Furthermore, classifier performance in all delay phases was correlated with behavioral performance in house, but not face, trials. Our results demonstrate the involvement of distributed posterior, but not lateral prefrontal, cortices in active maintenance during and after distraction. They also show that the neural code underlying STM maintenance is transiently changed in the presence of distractors and reinstated after distraction. The correlation with behavior suggests that active STM maintenance is particularly relevant in house trials, whereas face trials might rely more strongly on contributions from long-term memory.

Nanofocus x-ray diffraction is used to investigate the structure and local strain field of an isolated ðIn; GaÞN=GaN core-shell microrod. Because the high spatial resolution of the x-ray beam is only 80 × 90 nm2, we are able to investigate several distinct volumes on one individual side facet. Here, we find a drastic increase in thickness of the outer GaN shell along the rod height. Additionally, we performed highangle annular dark-field scanning-transmission-electron-microscopy measurements on several rods from the same sample showing that (In,Ga)N double-quantum-well and GaN barrier thicknesses also increase strongly along the height. Moreover, plastic relaxation is observed in the top part of the rod. Based on the experimentally obtained structural parameters, we simulate the strain-induced deformation using the finiteelement method, which serves as the input for subsequent kinematic scattering simulations. The simulations reveal a significant increase of elastic in-plane relaxation along the rod height. However, at a certain height, the occurrence of plastic relaxation yields a decrease of the elastic strain. Because of the experimentally obtained structural input for the finite-element simulations, we can exclude unknown structural influences on the strain distribution, and we are able to translate the elastic relaxation into an indium concentration which increases by a factor of 4 from the bottom to the height where plastic relaxation occurs.

Neuroimaging enables rich noninvasive measurements of human brain activity, but translating such data into neuroscientific insights and clinical applications requires complex analyses and collaboration among a diverse array of researchers. The open science movement is reshaping scientific culture and addressing the challenges of transparency and reproducibility of research. To advance open science in neuroimaging the Organization for Human Brain Mapping created the Committee on Best Practice in Data Analysis and Sharing (COBIDAS), charged with creating a report that collects best practice recommendations from experts and the entire brain imaging community. The purpose of this work is to elaborate the principles of open and reproducible research for neuroimaging using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and then distill these principles to specific research practices. Many elements of a study are so varied that practice cannot be prescribed, but for these areas we detail the information that must be reported to fully understand and potentially replicate a study. For other elements of a study, like statistical modelling where specific poor practices can be identified, and the emerging areas of data sharing and reproducibility, we detail both good practice and reporting standards. For each of seven areas of a study we provide tabular listing of over 100 items to help plan, execute, report and share research in the most transparent fashion. Whether for individual scientists, or for editors and reviewers, we hope these guidelines serve as a benchmark, to raise the standards of practice and reporting in neuroimaging using MRI.

A decade after it was shown that the orientation of visual grating stimuli can be decoded from human visual cortex activity by means of multivariate pattern classification of BOLD fMRI data, numerous studies have investigated which aspects of neuronal activity are reflected in BOLD response patterns and are accessible for decoding. However, it remains inconclusive what the effect of acquisition resolution on BOLD fMRI decoding analyses is. The present study is the first to provide empirical ultra high-field fMRI data recorded at four spatial resolutions (0.8mm, 1.4mm, 2mm, and 3mm isotropic voxel size) on this topic - in order to test hypotheses on the strength and spatial scale of orientation discriminating signals. We present detailed analysis, in line with predictions from previous simulation studies, about how the performance of orientation decoding varies with different acquisition resolutions. Moreover, we also examine different spatial filtering procedures and its effects on orientation decoding. Here we show that higher-resolution scans with subsequent down-sampling or low-pass filtering yield no benefit over scans natively recorded in the corresponding lower resolution regarding decoding accuracy. The orientation-related signal in the BOLD fMRI data is spatially broadband in nature, includes both high spatial frequency components, as well as large-scale biases previously proposed in the literature. Moreover, we found above chance-level contribution from large draining veins to orientation decoding. Acquired raw data were publicly released to facilitate further investigation.

Van der Waals heterostructures combining hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene offer many potential advantages, but remain difficult to produce as continuous films over large areas. In particular, the growth of h-BN on graphene has proven to be challenging due to the inertness of the graphene surface. Here we exploit a scalable molecular beam epitaxy based method to allow both the h-BN and graphene to form in a stacked heterostructure in the favorable growth environment provided by a Ni(111) substrate. This involves first saturating a Ni film on MgO(111) with C, growing h-BN on the exposed metal surface, and precipitating the C back to the h-BN/Ni interface to form graphene. The resulting laterally continuous heterostructure is composed of a top layer of few-layer thick h-BN on an intermediate few-layer thick graphene, lying on top of Ni/MgO(111). Examinations by synchrotronbased grazing incidence diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and UV-Raman spectroscopy reveal that while the h-BN is relaxed, the lattice constant of graphene is significantly reduced, likely due to nitrogen doping. These results illustrate a different pathway for the production of h-BN/graphene heterostructures, and open a new perspective for the large-area preparation of heterosystems combining graphene and other 2D or 3D materials. Multivariate pattern classification methods have been successfully applied to decode orientation of visual grating stimuli from BOLD fMRI activity recorded in human visual cortex (Kamitani and Tong, 2005; Haynes and Rees, 2005) [12] , [10] . Though there has been extensive research investigating the true spatial scale of the orientation specific signals (Op de Beeck, 2010; Swisher et al., 2010; Alink et al., 2013; Freeman et al., 2011, 2013) [2] , [15] , [1] , [4] , [5] , it remained inconclusive what spatial acquisition resolution is required, or is optimal, for decoding analyses. The research article entitled “The effect of acquisition resolution on orientation decoding from V1 BOLD fMRI at 7 T” Sengupta et al. (2017) [14] studied the effect of spatial acquisition resolution and also analyzed the strength and spatial scale of orientation discriminating signals. In this article, for the first time, we present empirical ultra high-field fMRI data, obtained as a part of the aforementioned study, which were recorded at four spatial resolutions (0.8 mm, 1.4 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm isotropic voxel size) for orientation decoding in visual cortex. The dataset is compliant with the BIDS (Brain Imaging Data Structure) format, and freely available from the OpenfMRI portal (dataset accession number: http://openfmri.org/dataset/ds000113c ds000113c).

Multiscale modeling by means of co-simulation is a powerful tool to address many vital questions in neuroscience. It can for example be applied in the study of the process of learning and memory formation in the brain. At the same time the co-simulation technique makes it possible to take advantage of interoperability between existing tools and multi-physics models as well as distributed computing. However, the theoretical basis for multiscale modeling is not sufficiently understood. There is, for example, a need of efficient and accurate numerical methods for time integration. When time constants of model components are different by several orders of magnitude, individual dynamics and mathematical definitions of each component all together impose stability, accuracy and efficiency challenges for the time integrator. Following our numerical investigations in Brocke et al. (Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 10, 97, 2016), we present a new multirate algorithm that allows us to handle each component of a large system with a step size appropriate to its time scale. We take care of error estimates in a recursive manner allowing individual components to follow their discretization time course while keeping numerical error within acceptable bounds. The method is developed with an ultimate goal of minimizing the communication between the components. Thus it is especially suitable for co-simulations. Our preliminary results support our confidence that the multirate approach can be used in the class of problems we are interested in. We show that the dynamics ofa communication signal as well as an appropriate choice of the discretization order between system components may have a significant impact on the accuracy of the coupled simulation. Although, the ideas presented in the paper have only been tested on a single model, it is likely that they can be applied to other problems without loss of generality. We believe that this work may significantly contribute to the establishment of a firm theoretical basis and to the development of an efficient computational framework for multiscale modeling and simulations. Scanning X-ray nanodiffraction on a highly periodic ferroelectric domain pattern of a strained K0.75Na0.25NbO3 epitaxial layer has been performed by using a focused X-ray beam of about 100 nm probe size. A 90°-rotated domain variant which is aligned along [1{\overline 1}2]TSO has been found in addition to the predominant domain variant where the domains are aligned along the [{\overline 1}12]TSO direction of the underlying (110) TbScO3 (TSO) orthorhombic substrate. Owing to the larger elastic strain energy density, the 90°-rotated domains appear with significantly reduced probability. Furthermore, the 90°-rotated variant shows a larger vertical lattice spacing than the 0°-rotated domain variant. Calculations based on linear elasticity theory substantiate that this difference is caused by the elastic anisotropy of the K0.75Na0.25NbO3 epitaxial layer.

Ledermann et al. (2011) propose random orthogonal matrix (ROM) simulation for generating multivariate samples matching means and covariances exactly. Its computational efficiency compared to standard Monte Carlo methods makes it an interesting alternative. In this paper we enhance this method׳s attractiveness by focusing on applications in finance. Many financial applications require simulated asset returns to be free of arbitrage opportunities. We analytically derive no-arbitrage bounds for expected excess returns to be used in the context of ROM simulation, and we establish the theoretical relation between the number of states (i.e., the sample size) and the size of (no-)arbitrage regions. Based on these results, we present a No-Arbitrage ROM simulation algorithm, which generates arbitrage-free random samples by purposefully rotating a simplex. Hence, the proposed algorithm completely avoids any need for checking samples for arbitrage. Compared to the alternative of (potentially frequent) re-sampling followed by arbitrage checks, it is considerably more efficient. As a by-product, we provide interesting geometrical insights into affine transformations associated with the No-Arbitrage ROM simulation algorithm.

Scalable fabrication of atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) films is highly important for the future implementation of this two-dimensional dielectric in various applications. In this contribution, we report on systematical growth experiments of few-layer thick h-BN, synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), on crystalline Ni films deposited on MgO(111). The samples are studied using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and synchrotron-based grazing incidence diffraction. Growth parameters for the realization of continuous h-BN films with high structural quality are presented and discussed. Additionally, our study also aims at gaining insight into the nucleation and growth behavior of h-BN on the Ni surface, which is crucial for achieving further improvement in terms of crystal quality and thickness homogeneity of h-BN layers grown not only by MBE but also by other methods.

Semiconductor-ferromagnet GaAs-Fe3Si core-shell nanowires were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and analyzed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic force microscopy. We obtained closed and smooth Fe3Si shells with a crystalline structure that show ferromagnetic properties with magnetizations along the nanowire axis (perpendicular to the substrate). Such nanobar magnets are promising candidates to enable the fabrication of new forward-looking devices in the field of spintronics and magnetic recording.

We compare two popular scenario tree generation methods in the context of financial optimization: Moment matching and scenario reduction. Using a simple problem with a known analytic solution, we find that moment matching, when accompanied by a check to ensure the absence of arbitrage opportunities, exactly replicates this solution. On the other hand, even if the scenario trees generated by scenario reduction are arbitrage-free, the solutions to the approximate optimization problem represented by the reduced tree are highly variable. As a conclusion we strongly favor moment matching over scenario reduction for multi-asset financial optimization problems.The published version differs from this working paper version.

The neural substrates of feature binding are an old, yet still not completely resolved problem. While patient studies suggest that posterior parietal cortex is necessary for feature binding, imaging evidence has been inconclusive in the past. These studies compared visual feature and conjunction search to investigate the neural substrate of feature conjunctions. However, a common problem of these comparisons was a confound with search difficulty. To circumvent this confound, we directly investigated the localized representation of features (color and spatial frequency) and feature conjunctions in a single search task by using multivariate pattern analysis at high field strength (7T). In right superior parietal lobule, we found evidence for the representation of feature conjunctions that could not be explained by the summation of individual feature representations and thus indicates conjoined processing of color and spatial frequency.

Corporate sports sponsorship is an important part of many companies’ corporate communication strategy. In this paper, we take the example of major football tournaments to show that sponsorship indeed affects the sponsor's (stock) market value. We find a statistically significant impact of football results (at an individual match level) of the seven most important football nations at European and World Championships on the stock prices of jersey sponsors. In general, the more important a match and the less expected its result, the higher its impact. In addition, we find a form of ‘mere-exposure’ effect which is difficult to reconcile with the efficient markets hypothesis.

Here we present an annotation of locations and temporal progression depicted in the movie “Forrest Gump”, as an addition to a large public functional brain imaging dataset (http://studyforrest.org). The annotation provides information about the exact timing of each of the 870 shots, and the depicted location after every cut with a high, medium, and low level of abstraction. Additionally, four classes are used to distinguish the differences of the depicted time between shots. Each shot is also annotated regarding the type of location (interior/exterior) and time of day. This annotation enables further studies of visual perception, memory of locations, and the perception of time under conditions of real-life complexity using the studyforrest dataset.

In this work, we report on the spontaneous formation of ordered arrays of nanometer-sized Bi-rich structures due to lateral composition modulations in Ga(As,Bi)/GaAs quantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The overall microstructure and chemical distribution is investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The information is complemented by synchrotron x-ray grazing incidence diffraction, which provides insight into the in-plane arrangement. Due to the vertical inheritance of the lateral modulation, the Bi-rich nanostructures eventually shape into a three-dimensional assembly. Whereas the Bi-rich nanostructures are created via two-dimensional phase separation at the growing surface, our results suggest that the process is assisted by Bi segregation which is demonstrated to be strong and more complex than expected, implying both lateral and vertical (surface segregation) mass transport. As demonstrated here, the inherent thermodynamic miscibility gap of Ga(As,Bi) alloys can be exploited to create highly uniform Bi-rich units embedded in a quantum confinement structure.

Here we present an update of the studyforrest (http://studyforrest.org) dataset that complements the previously released functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data for natural language processing with a new two-hour 3 Tesla fMRI acquisition while 15 of the original participants were shown an audio-visual version of the stimulus motion picture. We demonstrate with two validation analyses that these new data support modeling specific properties of the complex natural stimulus, as well as a substantial within-subject BOLD response congruency in brain areas related to the processing of auditory inputs, speech, and narrative when compared to the existing fMRI data for audio-only stimulation. In addition, we provide participants' eye gaze location as recorded simultaneously with fMRI, and an additional sample of 15 control participants whose eye gaze trajectories for the entire movie were recorded in a lab setting—to enable studies on attentional processes and comparative investigations on the potential impact of the stimulation setting on these processes.

The studyforrest (http://studyforrest.org) dataset is likely the largest neuroimag-ing dataset on natural language and story processing publicly available today. In this article, along with a companion publication, we present an update of this dataset that extends its scope to vision and multi-sensory research. 15 participants of the original cohort volunteered for a series of additional studies: a clinical examination of visual function, a standard retinotopic mapping procedure, and a localization of higher visual areas — such as the fusiform face area. The combination of this update, the previous data releases for the dataset, and the companion publication, which includes neuroimaging and eye tracking data from natural stimulation with a motion picture, form an extremely versatile and comprehensive resource for brain imaging research — with almost six hours of functional neuroimaging data across five different stimulation paradigms for each participant. Furthermore, we describe employed paradigms and present results that document the quality of the data for the purpose of characterising major properties of participants’ visual processing stream.

We demonstrate with two validation analyses that these new data support modeling specific properties of the complex natural stimulus, as well as a substantial within-subject BOLD response congruency in brain areas related to the processing of auditory inputs, speech, and narrative when compared to the existing fMRI data for audio-only stimulation. In addition, we provide participants’ eye gaze location as recorded simultaneously with fMRI, and an additional sample of 15 control participants whose eye gaze trajectories for the entire movie were recorded in a lab setting — to enable studies on attentional processes and comparative investigations on the potential impact of the stimulation setting on these processes.

Many areas of neuroscience are now critically dependent on computational tools to help understand the large volumes of data being created. Furthermore, computer models are increasingly being used to help predict and understand the function of the nervous system. Many of these computations are complex and often cannot be concisely reported in the methods section of a scientific article. In a few areas there are widely used software packages for analysis (e.g., SPM, FSL, AFNI, BrainVoyager, FreeSurfer in neuroimaging) or simulation (e.g. NEURON, NEST, Brian). However, we often write new computer programs to solve specific problems in the course of our research. Some of these programs may be relatively small scripts that help analyze all of our data, and these rarely get described in papers. As authors, how best can we maximize the chances that other scientists can reproduce our computations or reuse our methods on their data? Is our research reproducible? Our article lists practical suggestions to maximise the reproducibility of our work.

Little is known about the cortical regions involved in representing task-related content in preparation for visual task performance. Here we used representational similarity analysis (RSA) to investigate the BOLD response pattern similarity between task relevant and task irrelevant feature dimensions during conjunction viewing and target template maintenance prior to visual search. Subjects were cued to search for a spatial frequency (SF) or orientation of a Gabor grating and we measured BOLD signal during cue and delay periods before the onset of a search display. RSA of delay period activity revealed that widespread regions in frontal, posterior parietal, and occipitotemporal cortices showed general representational differences between task relevant and task irrelevant dimensions (e.g., orientation vs. SF). In contrast, RSA of cue period activity revealed sensory-related representational differences between cue images (regardless of task) at the occipital pole and additionally in the frontal pole. Our data show that task and sensory information are represented differently during viewing and during target template maintenance, and that task relevance modulates the representation of visual information across the cortex.

Current models of the functional architecture of human cortex emphasize areas that capture coarse-scale features of cortical topography but provide no account for population responses that encode information in fine-scale patterns of activity. Here, we present a linear model of shared representational spaces in human cortex that captures fine-scale distinctions among population responses with response-tuning basis functions that are common across brains and models cortical patterns of neural responses with individual-specific topographic basis functions. We derive a common model space for the whole cortex using a new algorithm, searchlight hyperalignment, and complex, dynamic stimuli that provide a broad sampling of visual, auditory, and social percepts. The model aligns representations across brains in occipital, temporal, parietal, and prefrontal cortices, as shown by between-subject multivariate pattern classification and intersubject correlation of representational geometry, indicating that structural principles for shared neural representations apply across widely divergent domains of information. The model provides a rigorous account for individual variability of well-known coarse-scale topographies, such as retinotopy and category selectivity, and goes further to account for fine-scale patterns that are multiplexed with coarse-scale topographies and carry finer distinctions.

A typical decision problem faced by investors is whether or not to include additional asset classes or return drivers into their portfolios. In the context of classical portfolio theory and in the presence of a riskless asset, the relevant criterion is a significant increase in the maximum Sharpe ratio (the Sharpe ratio of the tangency portfolio) achievable when enlarging the investment opportunity set. Although not all assumptions of classical portfolio theory are always satisfied by empirical return distributions, the Sharpe ratio is widely used in practice as a risk-adjusted performance measure and a benchmark. Most existing results on the distribution of the maximum Sharpe ratio depend on the assumption of multivariate normal return distributions. We generalize results from the literature to provide an analytical representation of the distribution of the difference between two maximum Sharpe ratios for much less restrictive distributional assumptions, both with and without short sales. For the long-only case, we provide conditions that allow us to check whether any local optima that may be encountered indeed correspond to the global optimum. Knowing the distribution of the difference enables us to test ex ante whether or not the inclusion of additional variables leads to a significant improvement in the maximum Sharpe ratio. High estimation uncertainty regarding means of asset returns makes it difficult to distinguish statistically between tangency portfolios at conventional significance levels.

We develop a ROM simulation algorithm that generates multivariate samples with exact means, covariances, and multivariate skewness. If required for financial applications, absence of arbitrage can be ensured. We use the Kollo measure of multivariate skewness, which is more informative than the Mardia skewness previously used in this context. Potential applications include the simulation of risk factors for the risk management of financial institutions.

The growth by molecular beam epitaxy of GeTe thin films on highly lattice-mismatched Si(111) substrates is reported. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and quadrupole mass spectrometry were employed to monitor the growth process in real time and tune the deposition conditions. Epitaxy was achieved in a window of substrate temperatures between 220 and 270 °C, using a Ge/Te flux ratio of ∼0.4. Extensive ex situ X-ray diffraction characterization showed that the epitaxial layers crystallize in the rhombohedrally distorted rocksalt structure α-GeTe, with orientation relationships to the substrate α-GeTe[0001] ‖ Si[111] and α-GeTe〈100〉 ‖ Si〈〉. ω-scans of the α-GeTe(000n) reflections (n = 3, 6, 9) exhibit a full width at half maximum between 10 and 20 arcsec, indicating small mosaicity. However, a large twist is observed (∼14°), pointing to the presence of rotational domains. In addition, the layer matrix is affected by twinning. The epitaxial films exhibit a slight tensile in-plane strain, which might be due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients between α-GeTe and Si, and/or small deviation from stoichiometric composition, i.e., vacancies in the Ge sub-lattice.

Magnetic circular dichroism in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range is a powerful technique for element-specific probing of magnetization in multicomponent magnetic alloys and multilayers. We combine a high-harmonic generation source with a $\ensuremath{\lambda}/4$ phase shifter to obtain circularly polarized XUV femtosecond pulses for ultrafast magnetization studies. We report on simultaneously measured resonant magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of Co and Ni at their respective ${M}_{2,3}$ edges and of Pt at its O edge, originating from interface magnetism. We present a time-resolved MCD absorption measurement of a thin magnetic Pt/Co/Pt film, showing simultaneous demagnetization of Co and Pt on a femtosecond time scale.

Music perception generally involves processing the frequency relationships between successive pitches and extraction of the melodic contour. Previous evidence has suggested that the ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ of melodic contour are categorically and automatically processed, but knowledge of the brain regions that discriminate different types of contour is limited. Here, we examined melodic contour discrimination using multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) of fMRI data. Twelve non-musicians were presented with various ascending and descending melodic sequences while being scanned. Whole-brain MVPA was used to identify regions in which the local pattern of activity accurately discriminated between contour categories. We identified three distinct cortical loci: the right superior temporal sulcus (rSTS), the left inferior parietal lobule (lIPL), and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). These results complement previous findings of melodic processing within the rSTS, and extend our understanding of the way in which abstract auditory sequences are categorized by the human brain.
