Abstract

Rationale Post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survivors frequently have dyspnoea that can lead to exercise intolerance and lower quality of life. Despite recent advances, the pathophysiological mechanisms of exercise intolerance in the post-COVID-19 patients remain incompletely characterised. The objectives of the present study were to clarify the mechanisms of exercise intolerance in post-COVID-19 survivors after hospitalisation. Methods This prospective study evaluated consecutive patients previously hospitalised due to moderate-to-severe/critical COVID-19. Within mean±sd 90±10 days of onset of acute COVID-19 symptoms, patients underwent a comprehensive cardiopulmonary assessment, including cardiopulmonary exercise testing with earlobe arterialised capillary blood gas analysis. Measurements and main results 87 patients were evaluated; mean±sd peak oxygen consumption was 19.5±5.0 mL·kg−1·min−1, and the tertiles were ≤17.0, 17.1–22.2 and ≥22.3 mL·kg−1·min−1. Hospitalisation severity was similar among the three groups; however, at the follow-up visit, patients with peak oxygen consumption ≤17.0 mL·kg−1·min−1 reported a greater sensation of dyspnoea, along with indices of impaired pulmonary function, and abnormal ventilatory, gas-exchange and metabolic responses during exercise compared to patients with peak oxygen consumption >17 mL·kg−1·min−1. By multivariate logistic regression analysis (receiver operating characteristic curve analysis) adjusted for age, sex and prior pulmonary embolism, a peak dead space fraction of tidal volume ≥29 and a resting forced vital capacity ≤80% predicted were independent predictors of reduced peak oxygen consumption. Conclusions Exercise intolerance in the post-COVID-19 survivors was related to a high dead space fraction of tidal volume at peak exercise and a decreased resting forced vital capacity, suggesting that both pulmonary microcirculation injury and ventilatory impairment could influence aerobic capacity in this patient population.

Abstract

This research involves eight students at the University of Pretoria who identify with the Bachelor of Science (BSc) and the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECPs). The study reports on the use of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) to determine how these students describe the best aspects of the programmes and the attributes that they developed in order to succeed. The aim was to extrapolate the findings to develop an improvement plan informed by students' perspectives. The narratives from semi-structured interviews conducted during the Discovery and Dream stages of the modified Appreciative Inquiry 4-D process are reported. Six views emerged: sense of family and belonging; peer mentoring and support networks; coping with failure and developing self-efficacy; the underdog phenomenon, self-motivation and support for mainstream students; the student advising model; and extended curriculum programmes as a first option. Abstract

The first ever attempt at fully autonomous dock-to-dock operation has been tested and demonstrated successfully at the end of 2018. The revolutionary shift is feared to have a negative impact on the safety of navigation and the getting of real-time situation awareness. Especially, the centralized context onboard could be changed to a distributed context. In navigation safety domain, monitoring, control, assessment of dangerous situations, support of operators of decision-making support system should be implemented in real time. In the context of autonomous ships, decision-making processes will play an important role under such ocean autonomy, therefore the same technologies should consist of adequate system intelligence. At the same time, situation awareness is the key element of the decision-making processes. Although there is substantial research on situation awareness measurement techniques, they are not suitable to directly execute quantitative processing for the situation awareness of autonomous ships navigation. Hence, a novel quantitative model of situation awareness is firstly proposed based on the system safety control structure of remotely controlled vessel. The data source is greatly limited, but the main result still indicates that the probability of operator lose adequate situation awareness of the autonomous ship is significantly higher than the conventional ship. Finally, the paper provides a probabilistic theory and model for high-level abstractions of situation awareness to guide future evaluation of the navigation safety of autonomous ships. Abstract

Lago Castor (45.6°S; 71.8°W) is located within the postglacial pathway of the core of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly winds, which migrated from~42°S during the LGM to ~52°S at present. During two field expeditions (2009-2011) a network of high-resolution reflection-seismic profiles of the lake infill was acquired and a 15 m long composite sediment core was retrieved. The combination of the seismic stratigraphy and the sediment core lithology shows that the lower units were deposited in a proglacial environment, while the upper units (younger than 18.3 kyr BP) were influenced by bottom currents counteracting currents of surface waters driven by the Southern Hemisphere Westerlies. We conclude that sediment drifts constitute a good and relatively poorly investigated proxy for Westerly wind strength reconstructions.

Abstract

A study of W+W- events accompanied by hard photon radiation produced in e+e- collisions at LEP is presented. Events consistent with two on-shell W-bosons and an isolated photon are selected from 183pb^-1 of data recorded at root{s}=189GeV. From these data, 17 W+W-gamma candidates are selected with photon energy greater than 10GeV, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. These events are used to measure the e+e- to W+W-gamma cross-section within a set of geometric and kinematic cuts; sigma{W+W-gamma} = 136+-37+-8 fb, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The photon energy spectrum is used to set the first direct, albeit weak, limits on possible anomalous contributions to the {W+ W- gamma gamma} and {W+ W- gamma Z0} vertices: -0.070GeV^{-2} < a_0/Lambda^2 < 0.070GeV^{-2}, -0.13GeV^{-2} < a_c/Lambda^2 < 0.19GeV^{-2}, -0.61GeV^{-2} < a_n/Lambda^2 < 0.57GeV^{-2}, where Lambda represents the energy scale for new physics., 23 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract: Background: The art of producing and acquiring dermatological wax models, moulages, flourished all over Europe in the beginning of the twentieth century, whereas very little is known about the existence of moulage collections in the Nordic countries. Objective: The aim of this study was to elucidate the presence, the origin, the production place, the use and the condition of dermatological moulage collections in the Nordic countries. Methods: In each Nordic country, an extensive survey was undertaken during spring 2016. Dermatological departments, museums with medical collections, persons assumed to have specific information about wax moulages as well as secondary sources were contacted and interviewed. Results: Several hitherto undescribed collections have survived in each country, most, however, damaged and in disrepair. One Danish and part of a Finnish collection have been restored. Only few moulages are exhibited and some have been photographed and digitalized. Denmark and Sweden have had a local moulage production. Responses to the survey indicate that the result covers all collections of dermatological moulages in the Nordic countries, though some moulages may remain in private collections unknown to the authors, or uncatalogued in museums. Conclusion: Moulages are medical gems from bygone days before modern technology facilitated new means of communication. Restoration and appropriate storing should be considered for at least selected items from the Nordic collections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Grain-size, terrigenous element and rock magnetic remanence data of Quaternary marine sediments retrieved at the NW African continental margin off Gambia (gravity core GeoB 13602–1, 13°32.71′N, 17°50.96′W) were jointly analyzed by end-member (EM) unmixing methods to distinguish and budget past terrigenous fluxes. We compare and cross-validate the identified single-parameter EM systems and develop a numerical strategy to calculate associated multiparameter EM properties. One aeolian and two fluvial EMs were found. The aeolian EM is much coarser than the fluvial EMs and is associated with a lower goethite/hematite ratio, a higher relative concentration of magnetite and lower Al/Si and Fe/K ratios. Accumulation rates and grain sizes of the fluvial sediment appear to be primarily constrained by shore distance (i.e., sea level fluctuations) and to a lesser extent by changes in hinterland precipitation. High dust fluxes occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and during Heinrich Stadials (HS) while the fluvial input remained unchanged. Our approach reveals that the LGM dust fluxes were ∼7 times higher than today's. However, by far the highest dust accumulation occurred during HS 1 (∼300 g m−2 yr −1), when dust fluxes were ∼80 fold higher than today. Such numbers have not yet been reported for NW Africa, and emphasize strikingly different environmental conditions during HSs. They suggest that deflation rate and areal extent of HSs dust sources were much larger due to retreating vegetation covers. Beyond its regional and temporal scope, this study develops new, in principle, generally applicable strategies for multimethod end-member interpretation, validation and flux budgeting calibration.

Abstract

The aim was to assess the efficacy of a modified version of Goal Management Training (GMT) in a person with schizophrenia who had difficulties in attaining the final goal for new and multitasking daily-life situations. GMT is designed to improve abilities in establishing goal-directed plans and carrying them out effectively. Beneficial effects of GMT were measured for several clinical questionnaires, laboratory tasks, and three real-life situations: meal preparation (trained, familiar); washing (nontrained, familiar); meeting preparation (nontrained, unfamiliar). The results revealed improvement in planning and on trained laboratory and meal preparation tasks and a generalization of GMT effects on nontrained laboratory and everyday tasks. Self-esteem also improved. Finally, a two-year followup indicated the durability of the beneficial effects.

184. Grain size control on Sr-Nd isotope provenance studies and impact on paleoclimate reconstructions: An example from deep-sea sediments offshore NW Africa

Abstract

Five sediment cores from offshore NW Africa were analyzed for strontium and neodymium isotope ratios to reconstruct temporal variations in continental weathering regimes. Sediments were taken from three time slices with well-known and distinctive environmental conditions: present-day (dry and warm), similar to 6 ka (wet and warm), and similar to 12 ka (dry and cold). Terrigenous sediment samples were split into two size fractions to distinguish between the two dominant transport mechanisms offshore NW Africa: fluvial (0-10 mu m) and aeolian (10-40 mu m). Sr isotope data record evidence of marked grain size control with higher isotopic ratios in the fine fraction. In contrast, epsilon(Nd) values are largely unaffected by grain size. Minor variability in Nd isotope data at each sampling site indicates near constant sources of terrigenous matter over the last similar to 12 ka. Variations in Sr isotope ratios are interpreted to reflect major changes in the evaporation-precipitation balance. We suggest that the Sr-Nd isotope data record a latitudinal shift of the northern limit of the African rainbelt and associated wind systems causing changes in the humidity and rate of chemical weathering over NW Africa. While hyperarid conditions prevailed similar to 12 ka, more humid conditions and intensified monsoonal rainfall at similar to 6 ka resulted in greater breakdown of easily weathered K-bearing phases and increased Sr-87/Sr-86 in the detritus. In late Holocene times the monsoonal circulation diminished resulting in a return to arid conditions. Our results clearly show that it is of vital importance in paleoenvironmental studies to carry out isotopic analyses on individual sediment fractions that were carried to the studied deposition site by distinct sediment transport mechanisms. If isotopic analyses are carried out on bulk sediments, the observed variability in isotopic values most likely represents changes in the particle size and mixing proportions of the sediment subpopulations.

Apart from work in the mining industry during the 1950s, the first real Operations Research (OR) group in South Africa was established at CSIR in the early 1960s. Those initially involved in this group played a significant role in establishing OR at various universities in South Africa. The OR group at CSIR did, however, continue and today the group still exists. This paper presents a brief history of this group and endeavours to provide a glimpse of some of the projects conducted over the many years since its establishment. Despite progress towards improved cooperation within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), it can be argued that real economic integration is still lacking. Cross-border value chain (VC) development has been proposed as a potential enabler of regional economic integration. This article draws on a systems thinking process to explore the dynamic process of regional economic integration and value chain development. Through an inductive approach, we consider pathways for value chain development using the agro-processing and automotive sectors within SACU as case studies.
