Purpose The objective of the present study is to evaluate the distribution of the transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) and the totally extraperitoneal repair (TEP) procedures among the obese and non-obese patient populations, to show how obesity impacts daily practice by reviewing the experience of a single center, and finally, to assess the outcomes of the operations. Methods All patients who underwent elective, minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair in our hospital from January 2017 to January 2022 were included in the present study. The data that were analyzed were patient demographics, each individual patient's American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) score, the minimally invasive technique (TAPP or TEP) utilized, the body mass index (BMI), and other comorbidities such as underlying diabetes, hypertension, and smoking status. Results A total of 109 patients were included in the present analysis, of which 81 (74.3%) underwent elective TEP repairs while 28 (25.7%) underwent elective TAPP repairs. Overall, 39 (35.7%) patients were included in the obesity subgroup with an average BMI of 35.4 ± 4.9, with a range from 30.1 to 52.7, and 70 (64.3%) were included in the non-obese subgroup, with an average BMI of 23.2 ± 3.3 and a range from 16.2 to 29.7. A series of glasses based on (80-y) TeO 2 -20 BiCl 3 -y RE 2 O 3 (y = 0, 0.6 mol%; RE = Nd, Sm, Dy, and Er) were prepared. The thermal stability of the glass was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The density and optical energy values of the prepared glass increased in the order of Sm 2 O 3 , Nd 2 O 3 , Dy 2 O 3 , and Er 2 O 3 . In addition, the glass doped with Er 2 O 3 had the highest refractive index values compared to the other samples. Subsequently, Judd-Ofelt parameters (Ω 2 , Ω 4 , and Ω 6 ) were obtained for the family of RE 3+ trivalent rare-earth ions introduced as dopants in a tellurite glass. These parameters were calculated from the absorption spectra for each RE 3+ . The structures were studied by Raman spectroscopy deconvolution, which determined that TeO 4 , TeO 3 , TeO 3+1 , BiO 6 , and BiCl 6 units had formed. In addition, the structural changes in the glass are related to the intensity ratio of TeO 4 /TeO 3 , depending on the type of rare-earth. For the optics and Judd-Ofelt parameters, the ray spectroscopy results of the prepared glass show that it is a good candidate for nonlinear optics fibers, a solid laser material.

The introduction of the Luminex Crossmatch assay (LumXm) which uses Luminex bead technology, consists of extracting the donor's Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) molecules from their lymphocytes, and binding them to fluorescent beads that are put in contact with recipient's serum. HLA donor-specific antibodies (DSA) are detected using a fluorescent conjugate. The goal of our study is to determine the benefits of using LumXm in a renal transplantation algorithm. We tested 78 recipients' sera using the LumXm, and the results were compared with the Luminex single antigen bead assay (SAB) for all sera, as well as the Flow Cytometry Crossmatch (FCXM) for 46 sera. We compared our results with those of SAB using 3 cutoffs, the first being the manufacturer's criteria where sensitivity and specificity were at 62.5% and 91.3% respectively for HLA class 1, and 88.5% and 50.0% respectively for HLA class 2. When using the third cutoff criteria (≥2 Adjusted values + MFI [Mean fluorescence intensity] >500 + Neg MFI < 500), the sensitivity increased to 69.0% for HLA class 1 and decreased to 84.0% for HLA class 2, while the specificity increased for HLA class 1 and 2. When comparing with FCXM, the 3 assays agreed in 55.8% of results for class 1 and 2 alike. However, major discrepancies were found for two groups in HLA class 1 and one in HLA class 2. Kidney transplantation is a major risk factor for severe forms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The dynamics and the persistence of the immune response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in this immunocompromised population remain largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the persistence of humoral and cellular immune response in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) and to establish whether immunosuppressive therapy influenced long-term immunity in this population. We report here the analysis of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and T cell-mediated immune responses in 36 KTRs compared to a control group who recovered from mild COVID-19. After a mean time of 5.22 ± 0.96 months post symptom onset for kidney transplant recipients, 97.22% of patients and 100% of the control group displayed anti-S1 immunoglobulin G SARS-CoV-2 antibodies ( p > 0.05). No significant difference was reported in the median of neutralizing antibodies between the groups (97.50 [55.25-99] in KTRs vs. 84 [60-98] in control group, p = 0.35). A significant difference in SARS-CoV-2-specific T cell reactivity was found in the KTRs compared to the healthy controls. The levels of IFNγ release after stimulation by Ag1, Ag2 and Ag3 were higher in the control group compared to the kidney transplant group ( p = 0.007, p = 0.025 and p = 0.008, respectively). No statistically significant correlation between humoral and cellular immunity was found in the KTRs. Our findings indicated that humoral immunity persisted similarly for up to 4 to 6 months post symptom onset in both the KTRs and the control group; however, T cell response was significantly higher in the healthy population compared to the immunocompromised patients.

Context: In this study, we predict the stability, elastic, electronic and optical properties of double perovskite (DP) Cs 2 CuIrF 6 . The detailed investigation of electronic structure and optical properties to find the suitability of DP Cs 2 CuIrF 6 for device applications. From the structural optimization results, the stability of DP (Cs 2 CuIrF 6 ) is in cubic order and belongs to the Fm-3 m space group (#225) with a nonmagnetic (NM) state. Additionally, the elastic results show that this DP is mechanically stable in a cubic and ductile manner. Further, we explain in detail the semiconducting nature of the proposed DP with the help of electronic structure and density of states (DOS). The electronic band gap of DP Cs 2 CuIrF 6 is 0.72 eV (L V -X C ). The optical part discussion, like the dielectric function ε, reflectivity R, refractive index n, absorption coefficient α and optical conductivity σ up to 13.00 eV. The studied compound is explored as a potential candidate for optoelectronic applications., Methods: The density functional theory (DFT) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) scheme of Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof (PBE) as implemented in Wien2k computational code is utilized to achieve stable structure, elastic, electronic and optical properties of this material. Introduction: Chronic kidney disease stage V, by its incidence and its prevalence which are constantly increasing in the world and in Algeria, the morbidity and mortality it generates, the high cost of its treatment, represents a major public health issue. Our objective is to describe the epidemiology of stage V chronic kidney disease treated in south-eastern Algeria., Patients and Methods: In our regional, multicenter, prospective descriptive study, all patients with stage V chronic kidney disease, residing and treated in south-eastern Algeria between September 1, 2016, and December 31, 2017, were included and followed up until December 31, 2018., Results: Stage V chronic kidney disease is a frequent pathology in the region: 1934 patients were included. It mainly affects young people: the average age of patients was 50.17 ± 16.98 years, with a male predominance of 59.10%. High blood pressure and diabetes are the two main causes. The start of dialysis on a temporary catheter represents 81.5% of cases, the initial management requires emergency dialysis in 91.2% of cases. In total, 97.1% of chronic hemodialysis patients use an arteriove-nous fistula as a permanent vascular access., Conclusion: Our study population is younger than that of developed countries and has fewer comorbidities and disabilities but lower survival and high mortality. The developing national chronic kidney disease stage V registry is becoming an absolute necessity. It will allow to have a better knowledge of its epidemiology and the needs of its care in each region. It can contribute to improving the prevention and management of this disease.

Objective: The presence of Aedes albopictus , of high sanitary and social impact, was first reported in Valencia (Eastern Spain) in 2015. Innovative tools for its control include the use of the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia pipientis . The release of mosquito males infected with the w Pip strain, has proven very promising for large-scale Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) applications. Before this strategy can be implemented in Valencia, it is important to know whether the natural local mosquito populations are Wolbachia -infected and, if so, identifying the infecting strains/supergroups, these being the objectives of the present work., Methods: Eggs were collected from the 19 districts of the València city between May and October 2019. A total of 50 lab-reared adult Ae. albopictus individuals were processed and analyzed for Wolbachia detection and molecular characterization. These actions took place within the framework of a collaboration established with the Department of Health and Consumer Affairs of the city council of Valencia. Fisher's exact test was used to detect the statistical significance of the differences between groups., Results: Our study revealed that 94% of the analyzed samples were naturally infected with Wolbachia . Both w AlbA and w AlbB supergroups were identified, with most samples (72% of the infected ones) carrying co-infections., Conclusions: These data provide the first characterization of the Wolbachia presence in natural populations of Ae. albopictus in the Mediterranean area of Spain. Verapamil and nitroglycerin are widely used to prevent radial artery spasm (RAS) during percutaneous cardiovascular procedures. However, these agents are not typically available in most African countries and consequently, isosorbide dinitrate is often the only spasmolytic treatment. Our aim was to compare the efficacy of isosorbide dinitrate alone versus isosorbide dinitrate used together with nicardipine to prevent RAS during transradial coronary procedures. This was a randomized controlled double-blind multicenter trial. Patients (n = 1,523) were randomized to receive either a sole therapy of isosorbide dinitrate (n = 760) or the combination of isosorbide dinitrate and nicardipine (n = 763). Our primary end point was the occurrence of RAS; defined as considerable perceived hindrance of catheter advancement. Our secondary end points were severe RAS; defined as (1) severe arm pain, (2) the need for either morphine or midazolam treatment, and (3) necessity for crossover to the contralateral radial or femoral artery. RAS incidence was reduced with the combination therapy versus isosorbide dinitrate alone (15% vs 25%, p <0.001), with a number needed to treat of 10 patients. There was also a significant reduction in the incidence of the secondary end points with combination therapy (3.6% vs 8.2%, p <0.001), with a number needed to treat of 22 patients. This result was driven by reductions in both femoral crossover (0.5% vs 2.4%, p = 0.003) and the use of morphine or midazolam injections (1.6% vs 3.5%, p = 0.02) with combination therapy. The use of biosorption as a strategy for lowering the amount of pollution caused by heavy metals is particularly encouraging. In this investigation, a low-cost and efficient biosorbent, Inula Viscosa leaves were used to remove zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) from synthetic wastewater. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiment, a scanning electron microscopy experiment, and an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy experiment were used to describe the support. Several different physicochemical factors, such as the beginning pH value, contact duration, initial zinc concentration, biosorbent dose, and temperature, were investigated in this study. When the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Toth, and Redlich-Peterson models were used to match the data from the Inula Viscosa leaves biosorption isotherms, it was found that the biosorption isotherms correspond most closely with the Langmuir isotherm. On the other hand, the kinetic biosorption process was investigated using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order (PS2), and Elovich models. The PS2 model was the one that provided the most accurate description of the biosorption kinetics. The thermodynamics process shows the spontaneous and endothermic character of Zn 2+ sorption on Inula Viscosa leaves, which also entails the participation of physical interactions. By leveraging the conventional Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) paradigm has attracted the attention of different research and development bodies. However, IoV deployment is still at stake as many security and privacy issues are looming; location tracking using overheard safety messages is a good example of such issues. In the context of location privacy, many schemes have been deployed to mitigate the adversary's exploiting abilities. The most appealing schemes are those using the silent period feature, since they provide an acceptable level of privacy. Unfortunately, the cost of silent periods in most schemes is the trade-off between privacy and safety, as these schemes do not consider the timing of silent periods from the perspective of safety. In this paper, and by exploiting the nature of public transport and role vehicles (overseers), we propose a novel location privacy scheme, called OVR, that uses the silent period feature by letting the overseers ensure safety and allowing other vehicles to enter into silence mode, thus enhancing their location privacy. This scheme is inspired by the well-known war strategy "Give up a Pawn to Save a Chariot". Additionally, the scheme does support road congestion estimation in real time by enabling the estimation locally on their On-Board Units that act as mobile edge servers and deliver these data to a static edge server that is implemented at the cell tower or road-side unit level, which boosts the connectivity and reduces network latencies. When OVR is compared with other schemes in urban and highway models, the overall results show its beneficial use.

Background: The ubiquitous environmental fungus Aspergillus flavus is also a life-threatening avian pathogen., Objectives: This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of A. flavus isolated from turkey lung biopsy or environmental samples collected in a poultry farm., Methods: A. flavus isolates were identified using both morphological and ITS sequence features. Multilocus microsatellite genotyping was performed by using a panel of six microsatellite markers. Population genetic indices were computed using FSTAT and STRUCTURE. A minimum-spanning tree (MST) and UPGMA dendrogram were drawn using BioNumerics and NTSYS-PC, respectively., Results: The 63 environmental (air, surfaces, eggshells and food) A. flavus isolates clustered in 36 genotypes (genotypic diversity = 0.57), and the 19 turkey lung biopsies isolates clustered in 17 genotypes (genotypic diversity = 0.89). The genetic structure of environmental and avian A. flavus populations were clearly differentiated, according to both F-statistics and Bayesian model-based analysis' results. The Bayesian approach indicated gene flow between both A. flavus populations. The MST illustrated the genetic structure of this A. flavus population split in nine clusters, including six singletons., Conclusions: Our results highlight the distinct genetic structure of environmental and avian A. flavus populations, indicative of a genome-based adaptation of isolates involved in avian aspergillosis., (© 2022 The Authors. High dielectric constant materials are of particular current interests as indispensable components in transistors, capacitors, etc. In this context, there are emerging trends to exploit defect engineering in dielectric ceramics for enhancing the performance. However, demonstrations of similar high dielectric performance in integration-compatible crystalline films are rare. Herein, such a breakthrough via the functionalization of donor-acceptor dipoles by compositional tuning in GaCu codoped ZnO films is reported. The dielectric constant reaches ~200 at 1 kHz and the optical transmittance in visible light reaches ~80%. Importantly, by analyzing the impedance spectroscopy data, prominent relaxation mechanisms in correlation with the dipole properties, enabling consistent explanations of the dielectric constant as a function of frequency are discriminated. The atomistic nature of the dipoles is revealed by the systematic X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Spectacularly, similar trends for the dielectric properties are observed, while synthesizing samples by pulsed laser deposition and ion implantation, indicating the general character of the phenomena., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Objectives: Several studies have shown that cholecalciferol supplementation (25OHD-S) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) improves kidney injury by reducing fibrosis-related vascular calcification and declining apoptosis-linked nephron damage., Methods: The oral 25OHD-S was evaluated in 60,000 IU/month/36 weeks versus in 2000 IU/d/24 weeks in CKD Stage 3 with serum 25OHD level < 20 ng/mL. The study was undertaken on 156 black subjects and 150 white subjects Southern Sahara (SS). All biomarkers of cardiometabolic (CMet) and cardiorenal (CRenal) syndrome, Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) profile, secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), Troponin T (cTnT) and atherogenicity risk were assessed by biochemical methods. Estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by chronic CKD-EPI equation formula. Total serum vitamin D by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (MS)., Results: Vitamin D deficiency alters in the same manner CMet, CRenal, and others biomarkers in both groups SS; however, these disorders are more acute in blacks compared to whites SS. Oral 25OHD-S a highlighted improvement of eGFR drop, SHPT decrease, decline proteinuria, and cardiac failure risk (NT-proBNP and cTnT) attenuation. Concomitantly, 25OHD-S normalizes Renin , Aldosterone , and Angiotensin System (RAAS) activity. Nevertheless, homocysteine and Lp (a) do not modulate by 25OHD-S., Conclusions: The oral vitamin D3 supplementation, according the dose, and the treatment duration does not like in black-skinned people versus to white-skinned inhabitants, while the 02 groups are native to the same Saharan environment. It emerge that a high intermittent dose through an extensive supplementation (60,000 IU/36 weeks) was more effective in black subjects. At opposite, a lower dose during a short period supplementation is sufficient (2000 IU/24 weeks) in white subjects.

Rational design of metal single-site embedded porous graphitic carbon nitride (P-g-C 3 N 4 ) nanostructures exploiting maximum atom utilization is warranted to enhance the thermal CO oxidation (CO Ox ) reaction. Herein, a facile, green, one-pot, and template-free approach is developed to fabricate the hierarchical porous P-g-C 3 N 4 -crumpled ultrathin nanosheets atomically doped with copper single atoms (Cu-P-g-C 3 N 4 ). Mechanistically, the quick protonation of melamine and pyridine under acidic conditions induces deamination to form melem, which is polycondensed under heating. The interconnected pores, high surface area (240 m 2 g -1 ), and maximized exposed isolated Cu atomic active sites (1.8 wt %) coordinated with nitrogen atom P-g-C 3 N 4 are the salient features of Cu- P-g-C 3 N 4 that endowed complete conversion to CO 2 at 184 °C. In contrast, P-g-C 3 N 4 only converted 3.8% of CO even at 350 °C, implying the electronic effect of Cu single atoms. The abundant Cu-nitrogen moieties can drastically weaken the binding affinity of the CO-oxidation (CO Ox ) intermediates and products, thus accelerating the reaction kinetics at a low temperature. This study may promote the fabrication of P-g-C 3 N 4 doped with various single atoms for the oxidation of CO.

γ-Irradiation and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopy have been used to induce structure disorder through the interaction of γ-rays (200 kGy) with fabricated Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and then to examine thoroughly the resultant structural change. The extracted electronic/fine XAFS structural parameters reflect a compositional and γ-irradiation co-dependence. The average crystal structure of samples prepared by the sol-gel method was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). A detailed structural XRD data analysis was carried out by applying a Rietveld refinement using the MAUD program. XAFS spectra were collected at the Zn K-edge (9659 eV) in transmission mode and at the Mn K-edge (6539 eV) in fluorescence mode. Direct evidence of the solubility of Mn ions in the ZnO structure was demonstrated by fitting the extended-XAFS (EXAFS) signal. Near-edge XAFS (XANES) analysis provided the oxidation states of Zn and Mn ions through fingerprint XANES spectra of the sample along with those of standard compounds. Linear combination fitting showed that the most fit chemical forms of Zn and Mn in the samples are ZnO and MnO, respectively. The oxidation states of both Zn and Mn XAFS absorbers were confirmed from pre-edge fitting. The results of the magnetic measurements were explained in light of the average and electronic/local structural information obtained from XRD, XANES and EXAFS techniques. The magnetic properties of the samples translate into an induced change in the average crystal and electronic/local structures upon Mn concentration change and γ-irradiation. XRD confirmed the successful preparation of hexagonal Mn-doped ZnO NPs with a crystallite size in the range 33-41 nm. Both XRD and EXAFS analysis detected a minor amount of Mn 3 O 4 as a secondary phase. XANES and EXAFS provided information exploring the outstanding potential of the utilized protocol for detecting precisely the presence of the secondary phase of Mn 3 O 4 , which changes with Mn content (x). Mean-square relative displacement (σ 2 ) values extracted from the EXAFS fitting were found to grow for Zn-Zn/Mn paths demonstrating the substitution of Mn/Zn into Zn crystal sites. The EXAFS analysis explains the reasons behind the enhancement in the magnetic properties and shows that the Mn doping content at x = 0.05 produces the most local atomic disorder in ZnO NPs. There is a strong harmony among the XRD, XANES, EXAFS and magnetization behavior of the Mn-doped ZnO NPs. Maximum magnetization was acquired at an Mn content of 0.05. γ-Ray-irradiated Zn 1-x Mn x O NPs are recommended as optimized candidates for showing the diversity of the applications., (open access.)

The aim of this work was to synthesize new bis hydrazone derived from benzil in good yield, namely: (1Z,2Z)-1,2-bis (3-Chlorophenyl Hydrazino) Benzil, encoded by 3-Cl BHB. The benzil (or 1,2-diphenyl ethanedione) reacts with 3-Cl phenyl hydrazine by reflux method using ethanol as solvent to obtain the target compound. The obtained product is depicted by UV-Vis, IR spectroscopy and XRD-crystals analysis. All various contacts intra and intermolecular found in 3-Cl BHB were determined by the X-ray diffraction technique performed on single crystals. On the other hand, the optimized geometric structure of 3-Cl BHB was computed by the DFT/B3LYP method with 6-31 G (d, p) level. So, the bond lengths and angles, frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), surface electrostatic potential of the molecule (MEP), global reactivity descriptors, Mulliken atomic charges, computed vibrational analysis and electronic absorption spectrum were determined to get a good understanding of the electronic properties and the active sites of 3-Cl BHB, then to compare them with experimental data. Additionally, a conformational study was carried out using the same method (DFT). Identification of genetic variations is a central part of population and quantitative genomics studies based on high-throughput sequencing data. Even though popular variant callers such as Bcftools mpileup and GATK HaplotypeCaller were developed nearly 10 years ago, their performance is still largely unknown for non-human species. Here, we showed by benchmark analyses with a simulated insect population that Bcftools mpileup performs better than GATK HaplotypeCaller in terms of recovery rate and accuracy regardless of mapping software. The vast majority of false positives were observed from repeats, especially for GATK HaplotypeCaller. Variant scores calculated by GATK did not clearly distinguish true positives from false positives in the vast majority of cases, implying that hard-filtering with GATK could be challenging. These results suggest that Bcftools mpileup may be the first choice for non-human studies and that variants within repeats might have to be excluded for downstream analyses., (© 2022. XAFS/XRF is a general-purpose absorption spectroscopy beamline at the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), Jordan. Herein, its optical layout is presented along with its powerful capabilities in collecting absorption and fluorescence spectra within a wide energy range (4.7-30 keV). The beamline is equipped with a conventional fixed-exit double-crystal monochromator that allows the collection of an X-ray absorption spectrum within a few minutes in step-by-step mode. An on-the-fly scanning mode will be implemented shortly where the acquisition time will be reduced to less than a minute per scan. The full automation of the beamline allows performing successive measurements under different conditions. The different experimental setups and special features available to users are reported. We investigated the relationship between Left Atrium strain reservoir function and symptoms and its impact on modulating Left Ventricular mechanics, diastolic filling, stroke volume, mean trans-mitral gradient and pulmonary pressure in mitral stenosis (MS) patients. We examined 195 full spectrum MS patients which were divided into two groups: Group 1 (n = 109) included patients with NYHA I & II functional class and group 2 (n = 86) included patients with NYHA III & IV functional class. LA strain reservoir function and classical echocardiographic parameters were calculated. LASr was significantly higher in group 1 versus group 2 in patients with MVA ≤ 1cm 2 [8.8(6.0-12.6) vs 6.8(4.1-8.9), p = 0.03) and when 1cm 2  < MVA ≤ 1.5 cm 2 [10.0 (5.4-13.8) vs 6.7(4.5-9.0), p = 0.02). In patients with Pulmonary Hypertension, group 1 had significantly higher LASr than group 2 [11.1(6.6-14.8) vs 5.9(4.3-9.0), p = 0.002) By multivariate analysis, diabetes (OR = 4.11, 95%CI: 1.6-10.4), stroke (OR = 2.9, 95%CI: 1.1-7.9), LASr (OR = 0.9, 95%CI: 0.80-0.99) and LV ejection fraction (LVEF)(OR = 0.9, 95%CI: 0.91-0.99) were independently associated with NYHA functional class. LASr was significantly and positively correlated to MVA (r = 0.3, p < 10 -3 ), stroke volume (r = 0.25, p = 10 -3 ), mitral inflow (r = 0.4, p < 10 -3 ) and LVEF(r = 0.14, p = 0.05). It was significantly and negatively correlated to left ventricular strain (r = -0.65, p < 10 -3 ), LA indexed volume (r = -0.40, p < 10 -3 ), maximum tricuspid regurgitation velocity (r = -0.25, p = 0.003), MTMG (r = -0.25, p = 10 -3 ), and heart rate (r = -0.4, p < 10 -3 ). We demonstrated a large range of interaction between LASr and mitral valve echocardiographic parameters. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3) deficiency in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with immune system dysfunction (pro-inflammatory cytokines storm) through macrophages renal infiltration, oxidative stress (OxS) damage and athero-thromboembolic risk. Conversely, cholecalciferol supplementation (25OHD-S) prevents kidney fibrosis by inhibition of vascular calcification and nephrotic apoptosis (nephrons reduction). The objective of this study was to investigate the pleiotropic effects of 25OHD-S on immunomodulation, antioxidant status and in protecting against thromboembolic events in deficiency CKD Black and White individuals living in the Southern Sahara (SS). The oral 25OHD-S was evaluated in 60,000 IU/month/36 weeks versus in 2000 IU/day/24 weeks in Black (n = 156) and White (n = 150). Total serum vitamin D was determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. All biomarkers of pro-inflammatory cytokines (PIC) were assessed by ELISA tests. OxS markers were assessed by Randox kits. Homocysteine and lipoproteine (a) were evaluated by biochemical methods as biomarkers of atherothromboembolic risk. All statistical analyses were performed with Student’s t-test and one-way ANOVA. The Pearson test was used to calculate the correlation coefficient. The means will be significantly different at a level of p value < 0.05. Multiple logistic regressions were performed using Epi-info and Statview software. Vitamin D deficiency alters the PIC profile, OxS damage and atherothrombogenic biomarkers in both SS groups in the same manner; however, these disorders are more acute in Black compared to White SS individuals. The results showed that the serum 25OHD3 concentrations became normal (>75 nmol/L or >30 ng/mL) in the two groups. We have shown that the dose and duration of 25OHD-S treatment are not similar in Black SS residents compared to White SS subjects, whilst the same inhabit the south Sahara environment. It appears that a high dose intermittent over a long period (D60: 36 weeks) was more efficient in Black people; while a lower dose for a short time is sufficient (D2: 24 weeks) in their White counterparts. The oral 25OHD-S attenuates PIC overproduction and OxS damage, but does not reduce athero-thromboembolic risk, particularly in Black SS residents.

Background: Trichobezoar is an uncommon clinical entity in which ingested hair mass accumulates within the digestive tract. It is generally observed in children and young females with psychological disorders. It can either be found as an isolated mass in the stomach or may extend into the intestine. Untreated cases may lead to grave complications., Material and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of six patients treated for trichobezoar in Monastir pediatric surgery department during 16-year-period between 2004 and 2019. Imaging (abdominal computed tomography and upper gastroduodenal opacification) and gastroduodenal endoscopy were tools of diagnosis., Results: Our study involved 6 girls aged 4 to 12. Symptoms were epigastric pain associated with vomiting of recently ingested food in 3 cases and weight loss in one case. Physical examination found a hard epigastric mass in all cases. The trichobezoar was confined to the stomach in 4 cases. An extension into the jejunum was observed in 2 cases. Surgery was indicated in all patients. In two cases, the attempt of endoscopic extraction failed and patients were then operated on. All patients had gastrotomy to extract the whole bezoar even those with jejunal extension. Psychiatric follow-up was indicated in all cases. The six girls have evolved well and did not present any recurrence., Conclusion: open surgery still plays a crucial role in Trichobezoard management . After successful treatment, psychiatric consultation is imperative to prevent reccurrence and improve long term prognosis., Competing Interests: None

The Materials Science (MS) beamline at SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East), dedicated to the X-ray powder diffraction technique, started its operational phase in December 2020 by hosting its first users. The MS endstation comprises a two-circle diffractometer coupled with a PILATUS 300K area detector, with which direct beam images are collected and compared with the initial ray-tracing simulation results. We present a detailed description of the beamline components and the experimental characterization of the main instrumental parameters relying on the instrumental profile and the angular resolution. A representative example for microstructure investigations of a nanocrystalline material is demonstrated., (open access.)

The drawbacks of common anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs), such as the high voltage plateau of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (1.55 V vs. Li/Li + ) and the moderate capacity of graphite (372 mAh-g -1 ), have established a need for better materials. Conversion materials, and in particular iron oxide and CaFe 2 O 4 (CFO), have amassed recent attention as potential anode replacements. In this study, we evaluate the material and electrochemical effects of the solution combustion synthesis (SCS) of porous CFO across novel fuel-to-oxidizer ratios and calcination temperatures. We demonstrate that nearly doubling the amount of fuel used during synthesis increases capacities between 120 and 150% at high current densities (~ 1000 mA-g -1 ) and across 500 additional charging-discharging cycles, an effect brought on in part by enhanced compositional purity in these samples. However, in order to ensure long-term cyclic stability, it is necessary to also calcine porous CFO to 900 °C to enhance crystallite size, particle size and spacing, and compositional purity., (© 2022. To assist sixth-generation wireless systems in the management of a wide variety of services, ranging from mission-critical services to safety-critical tasks, key physical layer technologies such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are proposed. Even though RISs are already used in various scenarios to enable the implementation of smart radio environments, they still face challenges with regard to real-time operation. Specifically, high dimensional fully passive RISs typically need costly system overhead for channel estimation. This paper, however, investigates a semi-passive RIS that requires a very low number of active elements, wherein only two pilots are required per channel coherence time. While in its infant stage, the application of deep learning (DL) tools shows promise in enabling feasible solutions. We propose two low-training overhead and energy-efficient adversarial bandit-based schemes with outstanding performance gains when compared to DL-based reflection beamforming reference methods. Cadmium (Cd 2+ ) is one of the most toxic heavy metals causing serious health problems; thus, designing accurate analytical methods for monitoring such pollutants is highly urgent. Herein, we report a label-free electrochemical aptasensor for cadmium detection in water. For this, a nanocomposite combining the advantages of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and chitosan (Cs) was constructed and used as immobilization support for the cadmium aptamer. First, the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with CNTs-CS. Then, AuNPs were deposited on CNTs-CS/GCE using chrono-amperometry. Finally, the immobilization of the amino-modified Cd-aptamer was achieved via glutaraldehyde cross-linking. The different synthesis steps of the AuNPs/CNTs/CS nano assembly were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was employed for cadmium determination. The proposed biosensor exhibited excellent performances for cadmium detection at a low applied potential (-0.5 V) with a high sensitivity (1.2 KΩ·M -1 ), a detection limit of 0.02 pM and a wide linear range (10 -13 -10 -4 M). Moreover, the aptasensor showed a good selectivity against the interfering ions: Pb 2+ ; Hg 2+ and Zn 2+ . Our electrochemical biosensor provides a simple and sensitive approach for Cd 2+ detection in aqueous solutions, with promising applications in the monitoring of trace amounts of heavy metals in real samples.

The tunability of optical properties in inorganic semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) allows them to be exceptional candidates for multiple optical and optoelectronic applications. While QD size dictates these properties, the addition of highly luminescent rare-earth elements also affects absorption and emission properties. In this work, we were able to successfully synthesize europium-doped CdSe QDs using a one-pot microwave synthesis method. Using recipes that we previously developed, we were able to synthesize Eu 3+ :CdSe quantum dots and tune their optical properties by varying microwave irradiation temperatures, hold times, and dopant concentration. UV-Vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence data show that structural incorporation of europium has an effect on the optical properties of CdSe QDs via energy transfer from host to dopant. Eu 3+ :CdSe QDs have diameters ranging from 4.6-10.0 nm and colors ranging from blue-green to dark red. The development of recipes for high throughput rapid microwave synthesis allows for QDs to be synthesized with repeatability, tunability, and scalability.

The pro-apoptotic property of n -BuOH extract of Limonium duriusculum (BEL) and its major isolated components [apigenin (APG1) and apigenin7-O-β-D-(6''-methylglucuronide) (APG2)] were tested. The anti-proliferative IC 50 of BEL and APG1 was quantified as 7.60 µg/mL and 25.74 µM respectively, while APG2 did not affect cell proliferation in HCT116 p53 wild type cells. Growth inhibition by BEL treatment was associated with reduced signaling from the MAP kinase, activation of the p53 response pathway and PARP cleavage. The multi-effect of Limonium duriusculum could be due through their major apigenin compounds and the other bioactive constituents that may possibly act in synergy to exercise the most favorable anti-tumor activities.

Background: Femoral hernias are an uncommon groin pathology among pediatric patients. Therefore, they are frequently misdiagnosed. In the present study, we review our experience with this rare surgical entity during the past 25 years., Methods: The medical records of 19 patients who underwent 22 femoral hernia repairs between January 1994 and December 2019 were retrospectively analysed., Results: Patients' age ranged from 2 to 12 years (mean age was 5. 5 years) with an approximately equal sex ratio (10 girls/9 boys). There were three bilateral cases identified separately. They were discovered and managed at different times. All the children were referred with a groin lump, but the correct pre-operative diagnosis was made in only 13 cases (59%). In the remaining cases, four were identified intraoperatively following negative exploration for a supposed inguinal hernia. The other five were found to have a femoral hernia 1 month to 12 months after ipsilateral inguinal hernia repair. All patients underwent elective surgery. The femoral canal was closed using either Lytle or McVay procedure. Recurrence occurred in only one patient 2 months after initial repair., Conclusion: Femoral hernias are often misdiagnosed. Pre-operative diagnosis can be obtained through careful clinical assessment. In equivocal cases, ultrasonography and laparoscopy could be useful. A correct pre-operative diagnosis will lead to suitable treatment, thus avoiding unnecessary reoperations and their related complications., Competing Interests: None

Solid friable residues (i.e. Ash) from combusted oil shale are a major environmental issue because they are highly enriched with toxic elements following combustion. The synchrotron based techniques X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) were used for determining the changes in speciation of Chromium (Cr) and Vanadium (V) in the ash and its mixtures with Red soil and Phosphogypsum as additives, through one-year period of hydration process. The X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) qualitative results indicate that all mixtures exhibits similar patterns showing that Vanadium has remain as pentavalent state, on the contrary Chromium has dramatic decreased from hexavalent to trivalent. This change in Cr speciation became clearer with increasing hydration period. Therefore, the results confirmed the advantage of the hydration process in the Cr(VI) reduction which might be due the domination of carbonate phase within all mixtures, thus hydration caused carbonate dissolution that increase the pH toward more alkaline which caused the Cr(IV) reduction into less-harmful and less mobile Cr(III). This increase in pH was not in favor of changing the V(V) into V(IV) due to its large stability field V(V). The Extend X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) analysis showed that Cr exhibiting a coordination shell of C-atoms as first nearest neighbors backscattering atoms around Cr, and at C-atoms backscattering at medium range order. This confirmed the domination of carbonate media through the best fitting of Cr-C. Which might be attributed to the more alkaline conditions developed during saturation of water (hydration), that accelerates of the reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III). Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has the potential to enhance road-safety with environment sensing features provided by embedded devices and sensors. This benignant feature also raises privacy issues as vehicles announce their fine-grained whereabouts mainly for safety requirements, adversaries can leverage this to track and identify users. Various privacy-preserving schemes have been designed and evaluated, for example, mix-zone, encryption, group forming, and silent-period-based techniques. However, they all suffer inherent limitations. In this paper, we review these limitations and propose WHISPER, a safety-aware location privacy-preserving scheme that adjusts the transmission range of vehicles in order to prevent continuous location monitoring. We detail the set of protocols used by WHISPER, then we compare it against other privacy-preserving schemes. The results show that WHISPER outperformed the other schemes by providing better location privacy levels while still fulfilling road-safety requirements.

X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectra were recorded to investigate the electronic structure and local crystal structure of ZnO and ZnO:B powders produced via hydrothermal synthesis. ZnO and ZnO:B grow as micrometre-scale rods with hexagonal shape, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy micrographs. The number of broken ZnO:B rods increases with increasing B concentration, as observed in the images, due to B atoms locating in between the Zn and O atoms which weakens and/or breaks the Zn-O bonds. However, no disorder within the crystallographic structure of ZnO upon B doping is observed from X-ray diffraction results, which were supported by EXAFS results. To determine the atomic locations of boron atoms in the crystal structure and their influence on the zinc atoms, EXAFS data were fitted with calculated spectra using the crystal structure parameters obtained from the crystallographic analysis of the samples. EXAFS data fitting and complementary k-weight analysis revealed the positions of the B atoms - their positions were determined to be in between the Zn and O atoms.

Microsporidiosis is an emerging opportunistic infection causing severe digestive disorders in immunocompromised patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of intestinal microsporidia carriage among immunocompromised patients hospitalized at a major hospital complex in the Tunis capital area, Tunisia (North Africa), and perform molecular epidemiology and population structure analyses of Enterocytozoon bieneusi , which is an emerging fungal pathogen. We screened 250 stool samples for the presence of intestinal microsporidia from 171 patients, including 81 organ transplant recipients, 73 Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-positive patients, and 17 patients with unspecified immunodeficiency. Using a nested PCR-based diagnostic approach for the detection of E. bieneusi and Encephalitozoon spp., we identified 18 microsporidia-positive patients out of 171 (10.5%), among which 17 were infected with E. bieneusi . Microsporidia-positive cases displayed chronic diarrhea (17 out of 18), which was associated more with HIV rather than with immunosuppression other than HIV (12 out of 73 versus 6 out of 98, respectively, p = 0.02) and correlated with extended hospital stays compared to microsporidia-negative cases (60 versus 19 days on average, respectively; p = 0.001). Strikingly, internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-based genotyping of E. bieneusi strains revealed high-frequency occurrence of ITS sequences that were identical ( n = 10) or similar (with one single polymorphic site, n = 3) to rare genotype WL12. Minimum-spanning tree analyses segregated the 17 E. bieneusi infection cases into four distinct genotypic clusters and confirmed the high prevalence of genotype WL12 in our patient population. Phylogenetic analyses allowed the mapping of all 17 E. bieneusi strains to zoonotic group 1 (subgroups 1a and 1b/1c), indicating loose host specificity and raising public health concern. Our study suggests a probable common source of E. bieneusi genotype WL12 transmission and prompts the implementation of a wider epidemiological investigation.

Patients with genetic disorders are potentially more susceptible to present vascular abnormalities compared to the general population. For these patients, unusual difficulties could appear during a CVC placement procedure that could lead to major complications if venous abnormalities are undiagnosed. One of the ways to mitigate the world energy crisis is to harvest clean and green energy from waste-heat, which is abundant, ubiquitous, and free. Energy harvesting of this waste-heat is one of the most encouraging methods to capture freely accessible electrical energy. Ferroelectric materials can be used to harvest energy for low power electronic devices, as they exhibit switchable polarization, excellent piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. The most important characteristic of ferroelectric materials, in the context of energy harvesting, is their ability to generate electric power from a time-dependent temperature change. In this work, we grew highly c-axis oriented heterostructures of BaZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 (barium zirconium titanate, BZT)/Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 TiO 3 (barium calcium titanate, BCT) on SrRuO 3 (strontium ruthenate, SRO) and deposited on SrTiO 3 (strontium titanate, STO) single crystalline substrate using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. We investigated the structural, electrical, dielectric, and pyroelectric properties of the above-mentioned fabricated heterostructures. The wide range of θ-2θ X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns only shows (00l) reflection peaks of heterostructures and the substrate which confirmed that the films are highly c-axis oriented. We are also capable to convert the low-grade waste-heat into electrical energy by measuring various temperature-dependent ferroelectric hysteresis loops of our nanostructure films via pyroelectric Ericsson cycles and the structures show an energy conversion density ~ 10,970 kJ/m 3 per cycle. These devices exhibit a large pyroelectric current density of ~ 25 mA/m 2 with 11.8 °C of temperature fluctuation and the corresponding pyroelectric coefficient of 3425 μC/m 2 K. Our research findings suggest that these lead-free relaxor-ferroelectric heterostructures might be the potential candidates to harvest electrical energy from waste low-grade thermal energy.

In this work, we develop and analyze a nonautonomous mathematical model for the spread of the new corona-virus disease ( COVID-19 ) in Saudi Arabia. The model includes eight time-dependent compartments: the dynamics of low-risk S L and high-risk S M susceptible individuals; the compartment of exposed individuals E ; the compartment of infected individuals (divided into two compartments, namely those of infected undiagnosed individuals I U and the one consisting of infected diagnosed individuals I D ); the compartment of recovered undiagnosed individuals R U , that of recovered diagnosed R D individuals, and the compartment of extinct Ex individuals. We investigate the persistence and the local stability including the reproduction number of the model, taking into account the control measures imposed by the authorities. Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal. It accumulates in biological tissues, especially in fish which constitutes a first rank food for humans, particularly in the coastal areas. This study investigates the effect of long-term exposure to low Cd concentration (17 μg/kg/day) in rat striatum and hippocampus. In this study, the neurobehavioral ability changes were assessed by applying cognitive standard testing at the end of the rats' exposure period. In addition, the examination of mitochondrial swelling was performed at the same time of evaluation of its redox status in the brain regions studied through stress parameters (GSH, MDA, GST, and CAT). This study examined also whether this long-term exposure can modify the apoptotic signaling pathway via assessment of apoptotic markers (caspase-8 and 9, Bax, Bcl-2, and Cyt-c) in cell lysates. The results of this study showed changes in neurobehavioral abilities of animals and a stronger mitochondrial swelling associated with a significant decrease in antioxidant systems (GSH, GST, and CAT) and conversely an increase in the lipoperoxidation end product (MDA) in both the striatal and hippocampal mitochondria. In addition, the results revealed a significant increase in pro-apoptotic intracellular components such as caspase-9, Cyt-c, and Bax, and showed also an evident decrease in Bcl-2 levels. In conclusion, our results reported that chronic exposure to Cd produces behavioral and cognitive perturbations, enhances oxidative stress associated with mitochondrial edema and Cyt-c leakage, and, ultimately, potentiates apoptosis signaling pathway in both brain regions in rats.

In this study we have developed a new aptasensor for cadmium (Cd 2+ ) detection in water. Gold electrode surface has been chemically modified by electrochemical reduction of diazonium salt (CMA) with carboxylic acid outward from the surface. This was used for amino-modified cadmium aptamer immobilization through carbodiimide reaction. Chemical surface modification was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). This latter was also used for Cd 2+ detection. The aptasensor has exhibited a good linear relationship between the logarithm of the Cd 2+ concentration and the impedance changes in the range from 10 -3 to 10 -9  M with a correlation R 2 of 0.9954. A high sensitivity was obtained with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 2.75*10 -10  M. Moreover, the developed aptasensor showed a high selectivity towards Cd 2+ when compared to other interferences such as Hg 2+ , Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ . A survey on human cystic echinococcosis was carried out in two public health establishments including the state hospital and one private medical clinic in Djelfa province (Algeria) to report the epidemiological profile of surgical cases and to examine the fertility of collected cysts. Total 18 hydatid cysts from 11 patients of different ages living both in rural and urban areas were obtained. Liver localization was noted in 73% of cases compared to lung localization (27%). Microscopic examination showed a fertility rate of 94.45% against 5.55% of sterile cysts.

Introduction: Medication adherence is the cornerstone of the successful drug management of a chronic disease., Aim: To develop a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence and the factors associated with non-adherence in patients with type 2 diabetes in North African countries., Methods: A literature search was conducted on Medline via Pubmed with a complementary search on Google Scholar. The meta-analysis was conducted using the Metaprop function of R software. The Cochrane Q test and Higgins I² statistic were used to estimate the heterogeneity., Results: In total, 16 studies measuring the prevalence of medication adherence in North African countries were selected in this systematic review. The combined prevalence of non-adherence was 38% (95% CI 30%-47%) with a random-effects model. The meta-analysis revealed a significant heterogeneity between studies (I² = 96%, p <0.01). Factors associated with non-adherence in type 2 diabetics were education level, social security coverage, therapeutic education, cost of medication, socioeconomic level, the duration of diabetes, unbalanced diabetic diet, polypharmacy, female gender, family support and age., Conclusion: The combined prevalence of non-adherence among type 2 diabetics in North Africa was high and multifactorial, requiring global and integrated management by patients, physicians and pharmacists.

In this paper, a versatile Markovian queueing system is considered. Given a fixed threshold level c , the server serves customers one a time when the queue length is less than c , and in batches of fixed size c when the queue length is greater than or equal to c . The server is subject to failure when serving either a single or a batch of customers. Service rates, failure rates, and repair rates, depend on whether the server is serving a single customer or a batch of customers. While the analytical method provides the initial probability vector, we use the entropy principle to obtain both the initial probability vector (for comparison) and the tail probability vector. The comparison shows the results obtained analytically and approximately are in good agreement, especially when the first two moments are used in the entropy approach.

Aim: The present study was designed to investigate the prevalence and identification of gastrointestinal parasites in feces samples of dromedary camels ( Camelus dromedarius ) in Algeria based on microscopic examination., Materials and Methods: A total of 717 fresh fecal samples obtained from 28 farms at Steppe and Northern Sahara regions of Algeria were processed for microscopic examination after concentration by formalin-ether sedimentation and flotation techniques. In addition, microscopic examination of Cryptosporidium spp. was done by modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining and Lugol staining procedure was used for the detection of Giardia cysts., Results: Microscopic examination indicated an infection rate of gastrointestinal parasites of 48.26% (346/717). Protozoan infections were recorded at 17.02% (122/717), whereas helminth infections were recorded at 23.71% (170/717). In addition, mixed infection (protozoans and helminths) was seen at 7.53% (54/717). No correlation was found between infection and age of the animals, nor the consistency of the stool samples; in addition, neither influence of sex nor breed of camels was observed. Eighteen genera of gastrointestinal parasites were revealed; including four genera of protozoa, 12 Nematoda, one Cestoda, and one Trematoda. Strongyloides spp. and Eimeria spp. showed the highest rate of parasitism, while Cooperia spp. was observed with the lowest prevalence. Cryptosporidium spp. was detected in 13 among 717 examined samples (1.81%)., Conclusion: The parasite fauna infecting the gastrointestinal tract of the Algerian dromedary is much diversified. The detected parasites in camels are similar to counterparts in other ruminants, posing serious challenge to animal farming. Four amine derivative compounds were synthesized: 2-[(phenylamino)methyl]phenol, 2-{[(4-hydroxyphenyl)amino]methyl}phenol, 2-[(2-hydroxybenzyl)amino]benzonitrile and 2-{[(3-chlorophenyl)amino]methyl}phenol. The structure of the organic molecules was confirmed by FT-IR, 13 C NMR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy analyses. Their corrosion inhibition performances on mild steel in 1 M HCl were investigated using electrochemical measurements and surface analysis. Scanning electron microscopy analysis confirms the presence on the mild steel surface of a protective film of the as-prepared organic compounds, which depends on the substituent groups. Moreover, density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation were employed in order to determine the adsorption mechanism and the position of amine derivative molecules towards the mild steel surface in an aggressive solution and to confirm the electrochemical results. The inhibition efficiency (IE) decreases with a decrease in concentration and the adsorption obeyed the Langmuir isotherm. The substitution of the OH group on the aromatic ring by Cl or CN increases IE to 90.23 and 92.56%, respectively. Molecular dynamics simulations attested that the four molecules were adsorbed on the Fe (110) surface in a flat position in the presence of water and HCl with high interaction between the different groups of the inhibitors and mild steel surface., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

This study aimed to investigate whether the single nucleotide polymorphism C677T (rs1801133) of the methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene was associated with the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and circulating homocysteine (Hcy) levels in Tunisian population. 310 angiografically diagnosed CAD patients and 210 controls were enrolled in this study. The MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) polymorphism was genotyped, and the Hcy concentrations were measured. The severity of CAD was evaluated using the Gensini scoring system. Compared to the CC genotype, the TT genotype confers a higher risk for CAD severity with an OR = 9.07 and 95% CI = 3.78-21.8. The T allele was the predisposing allele for CAD and that it was probably associated with CAD severity. The area under the ROC curve for Hcy was 0.764 (95% CI 0.660 to 0.868, p = 0.001). The receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) for Hcy showed its useful prediction of CAD. Hcy levels were not significantly associated with CAD severity expressed by Gensini Score (GS). The MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) polymorphism influences circulating Hcy levels. The MTHFR C677T polymorphism and hyperhomocysteinemia could have an important role in the prediction of the presence and not the severity expressed by GS of CAD.

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common autosomal recessive disease in Caucasians, caused by mutation in cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). The analysis of some extra and intragenic markers within or closely linked to CFTR gene is useful as a molecular method in clinical linkage analysis. Indeed, knowing that the molecular basis of CF is highly heterogeneous in our population is explained in the present study. In this work, we are interested for the first time to study the polymorphic marker IVS6a GATT in a CF Tunisian population., Methods: Our study involved 80 CF Tunisian patients with a positive sweat test. A cohort of 90 healthy controls was also enrolled. The analysis of the variant IVS6a GATT was conducted by analysis of the fragments on automatic sequencer (ABI Prism 310). A statistical analysis was performed on Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 software., Results: The analysis of genotypic distribution of IVS6aGATT showed a significant difference between the control and CF groups suggesting the involvement of this marker in cystic fibrosis. Furthermore, we noted that the 6 GATT repetition in the homozygous state is more common in CF patients than in the control group (p <0.05). This while the 7GATT/7GATT genotype is more common among controls compared to CF patients (p = 0.002). Regarding the interest of this polymorphism on the clinical expression of cystic fibrosis, we have noted no significant association between 6/6 genotype with different clinical conditions in CF patients outside the CFTR mutation. While a significant association was found between respiratory involvement and mixed (respiratory and digestive) and the 6/6 genotype in patients with the mutation F508del homozygous (p <0.05). In addition, a significant association was also noted with gastrointestinal involvement for non F508del patients/F508del not (p = 0.014). Given that, phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity of cystic fibrosis, several studies have sought to highlight the role of genetic markers linked to the CFTR gene in the expression and evolution of the disease., Conclusion: Our study on the implication of polymorphic marker IVS6a GATT is one of the first works carried out in the Tunisian population and confirms the usefulness of this marker in the clinical expression of cystic fibrosis.

In this study, the photodegradation of organophosphorus (OPs) pesticides in the honey medium was evaluated under sunlight irradiation. Some of the 22 samples collected at different sites contained OPs pesticides (Methyl parathion, Coumaphos and Fenitrothion) with an average of 8 ng/g. Moreover, three samples were found with pesticide residue levels exceeding the maximum residue limits (MRL ≥ 50 ng/g) imposed by the standard water (WHO). Gas chromatography (GC) combined with a tritium electron capture detector system was used for the analysis of OPs pesticides in honey. Total degradation of the Methyl parathion was obtained in less than 60 min of irradiation. Moreover, the elimination of the other OPs found in the samples was also effective with a rate of 85% for Coumaphos and Fenitrothion after 50 min of sunlight irradiation. The kinetics of the photodegradation reaction of all OPs pesticides studied followed a pseudo-first order model.

The metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) closest to room temperature of 68-70 °C as shown by vanadium oxide (VO 2 ), compared with other transition metal oxides, makes it a potential candidate for smart window coating. We have successfully fabricated a potential smart window device after the optimum design of a multilayered thin film structure made out of transparent conducting oxide (aluminum doped zinc oxide) and pure VO 2 using pulsed laser deposition technique. This comprehensive study is based on two different configurations for multi-layered structure approach, with the intention to reduce the transition temperature, as well as to maintain the MIT properties that would strengthen the potential of the structure to be used for a smart window device. By creating a multi-layered structure, we were able to create a low powered device that can operate less than 15 V that leads to significant decline in the infrared transmission by a magnitude of over 40% and provided sufficient heat to trigger the MIT at a temperature around 60 °C, which is almost 10 °C lower than its bulk counterpart. This finding would positively impact the research on VO 2 thin films, not only as smart windows but also for numerous other applications like bolometers, infrared detectors, Mott transistors and many more.

Large area highly crystalline MoS 2 and WS 2 thin films were successfully grown on different substrates using radio-frequency magnetron sputtering technique. Structural, morphological and thermoelectric transport properties of MoS 2, and WS 2 thin films have been investigated systematically to fabricate high-efficient thermal energy harvesting devices. X-ray diffraction data revealed that crystallites of MoS 2 and WS 2 films are highly oriented in 002 plane with uniform grain size distribution confirmed through atomic force microscopy study. Surface roughness increases with substrate temperature and it plays a big role in electron and phonon scattering. Interestingly, MoS 2 films also display low thermal conductivity at room temperature and strongly favors achievement of higher thermoelectric figure of merit value of up to 1.98. Raman spectroscopy data shows two distinct MoS 2 vibrational modes at 380 cm -1 for E 1 2g and 410 cm -1 for A 1g . Thermoelectric transport studies further demonstrated that MoS 2 films show p-type thermoelectric characteristics, while WS 2 is an n-type material. We demonstrated high efficient pn-junction thermoelectric generator device for waste heat recovery and cooling applications.

This study investigates the performance of the combination of biological pre-treatment with Kefir grains (KGs) and photocatalytic process using Ag-doped TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) for the simultaneous removal of toxic pollutants from landfill leachate (LFL). After 5 days of 1% (w/v) KGs pre-treatment at 37 °C, TOC, COD, NH 4 + -N, and PO 4 3- removal rates were 93, 83.33, 70 and 88.25%, respectively. The removal efficiencies were found to be 100, 94, 62.5, 53.16 and 47.52 % for Cd, Ni, Zn, Mn and Cu, respectively. The optimal conditions of Ag-doped TiO 2 photocatalytic process were optimized using Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology (BBD-RSM) to enhance the quality of pre-treated LFL. Interestingly, Ag-doped TiO 2 photocatalytic process increases the overall removal efficiencies to 98, 96, 85 and 93% of TOC, COD, NH 4 + -N, and PO 4 3- , respectively. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of toxic heavy metals was gradually improved. We grew lead-free BaZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 (BZT)/Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 TiO 3 (BCT) epitaxial heterostructures and studied their structural, dielectric, ferroelectric and energy density characteristics. The BZT/BCT epitaxial heterostructures were grown on SrRuO 3 (SRO) buffered SrTiO 3 (STO) single crystal substrate by optimized pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. These high-quality nanostructures exhibit high dielectric permittivity (∼1300), slim electric field-dependent polarization (P-E) curve with high saturation polarization (∼100 µC/cm 2 ) and low remnant polarization (∼20 µC/cm 2 ) through interface engineering to develop new lead-free ferroelectric system for energy storage devices. We observe an ultrahigh discharge and charge energy densities of 42.10 and 97.13 J/cm 3 , respectively, with high efficiency, which might be highly promising for both high power and energy storage electrical devices.

The Mycelium Donor Plant system (MDP) was adapted to study the time course of the colonization of Pyrus communis by Rhizophagus irregularis under in vitro conditions. Isolated germinated spores did not colonize pear roots. Inoculum composed of R. irregularis spores/mycelium associated with chicory root fragments was used to inoculate Medicago truncatula which became thereafter the MDP of pear plantlets. Typical intraradical structures (hyphae, arbuscules, spores/vesicles) and appressoria were observed in the pear roots. During acclimatization, the pear plants formed a densely branched root system. R. irregularis colonization not only altered the root architecture but also changed the nutrient composition of the acclimatized pear plantlets.
