Geoscientific questions are increasingly relevant in our daily life. However, the public awareness of geoscientific topics is very limited. Therefore, it is important to inverse the visibility of geoscientific challenges and solutions in our society. Communicating geosciences to a broader audience implies the use of innovative strategies for public outreach. We have to encourage kids to become enthusiastic about geoscientific topics already in schools and leisure activities such as museums. Besides public outreach and school education, we also need to motivate geosciences students to address geoscientific challenges to the public. The current situation with the worldwide digital teaching atmosphere brings varies challenges but also opportunities in optimizing e-learning methods in the higher education teaching including digital field trips, microscopy inspire other digital lectures. The aim of this session is to discuss and report on existing and future initiatives as well as connecting people with similar motivation.

Hochgebirge entstehen in der Folge von Kollisionen zweier Lithosphärenplatten. Entweder wird ein Ozean zwischen zwei Platten geschlossen und es kommt zur Kollision zweier kontinentaler Platten mit der Bildung von tektonischen Decken oder zu einer lang anhaltenden Subduktion mit tektonischer Verkürzung der Gesteine auf der oberen Platte. In beiden Fällen wird die kontinentale Kruste stark verdickt und es kommt zur Heraushebung eines Gebirges durch isostatischen Ausgleich. Die Heraushebung wird durch das Zusammenspiel von Erosionsprozessen und isostatischem Ausgleich und bei einer Kontinent-Kontinent-Kollision auch durch den Abriss der ozeanischen Lithosphäre verstärkt. Dies führt schließlich zur Herausbildung eines starken Reliefs. The evolution of high mountain areas: High mountain areas develop as a consequence of the collision of two lithospheric plates. Either an ocean is closed between two plates and there is a collision between two continental plates with the formation of tectonic nappes or a long-lasting subduction with tectonic shortening of the rocks on the upper plate. As a result, in both cases the continental crust is strongly thickened followed by an uplift caused by isostatic adjustment. This uplift is intensified by the interaction of erosional processes and isostatic adjustment and, in case of a continent-continent collision, the slab break-off of the oceanic lithosphere. Finally, this leads to the formation of a strong relief

The Kieler Ufer cliff section is a structural key location in the late Weichselian thrust-dominated-to-fold–thrust-dominated glacitectonic complex of Jasmund. Restoration and balancing of geological cross sections from the eastern coast (southern sub-complex) enabled strain quantification and the illustration of stress orientation. The entire horizontal shortening of the Kieler Ufer section is 1280 m (51.6 %) at its minimum. The thrust faults generally inclined towards south indicate a local glacier push from the S/SSW, which fits well into the glacio-dynamic model suggested by Gehrmann and Harding (2018).

Soft-sediment thin sections from a SW-dipping thrust fault at the south-western limb of the Wissower Bach syncline (NE Rügen) give rise to the complicated glacitectonic environment in the south-western Baltic Sea region. Micromorphology, microstructural mapping, and macroscale information have led to the development of a detailed model for the evolution of the syncline during late Weichselian glacitectonism.

The Wissower Bach Syncline on the Jasmund Peninsula (NE Germany) has been examined to understand the complicated glacitectonic environment in the southern Baltic Sea region, comprising folds and thrust faults from the Weichselian–Pleniglacial. Soft-sediment thin sections from a SW-dipping thrust fault at the south-western limb of the syncline between Cretaceous chalk (hangingwall) and Pleistocene deposits (footwall) were analysed using micromorphology and microstructural mapping. Within the diamicton bounding the fault, three different clast microfabrics were distinguished: an older, but dominant S1 fabric; a second S2 foliation orientated perpendicular to S1; and a younger subvertical S3 fabric. These fabrics developed during large-scale folding and thrusting, subsequent fabric rotation adjacent to the thrust fault accompanied by dewatering of the diamicton and extension; the extension implies late-stage reactivation and gravitational relaxation at the south-western limb of the syncline as the ice retreated. The combination of a 3D microstructural model and the macroscale information has led to the development of a detailed model for the evolution of the Wissower Bach Syncline during glacitectonism and the localized reactivation of the associated thrusts in response to ice retreat. Moreover, this methodology provides a robust dataset on which to interpret the structural evolution of glacitectonic complexes.
