We describe a class of (2,2) superconformal field theories obtained by fibering a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold CFT over a compact Kaehler base manifold. While such models are naturally obtained as phases in a gauged linear sigma model, our construction is independent of such an embedding. We discuss the general properties of such theories and present a technique to study the massless spectrum of the associated heterotic compactification. We test the validity of our method by applying it to hybrid phases of linear models and comparing spectra among the phases., Comment: 56 pages

Possible rotation states of two satellites of Saturn, Prometheus (S16) and Pandora (S17), are studied by means of numerical experiments. The attitude stability of all possible modes of synchronous rotation and the motion close to these modes is analyzed by means of computation of the Lyapunov spectra of the motion. The stability analysis confirms that the rotation of Prometheus and Pandora might be chaotic, though the possibility of regular behaviour is not excluded. For the both satellites, the attitude instability zones form series of concentric belts enclosing the main synchronous resonance center in the phase space sections. A hypothesis is put forward that these belts might form "barriers" for capturing the satellites in synchronous rotation. The satellites in chaotic rotation can mimic ordinary regular synchronous behaviour: they preserve preferred orientation for long periods of time, the largest axis of satellite's figure being directed approximately towards Saturn., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions with (0,2) supersymmetry are central in the study of string compactifications. Remarkably little is known about generic (0,2) theories. We consider theories with branches on which multiplets with a net gauge anomaly become massive. The simplest example is a relevant perturbation of the gauge theory that flows to the CP(n) model. To compute the effective action, we derive a useful set of Feynman rules for (0,2) supergraphs. From the effective action, we see that the infra-red geometry reflects the gauge anomaly by the presence of a boundary at finite distance. Mirror symmetry of the type II string has a beautiful generalization to the heterotic string. This generalization, known as (0,2) mirror symmetry, is a field still largely in its infancy. We describe recent developments including the ideas behind quantum sheaf cohomology, the mirror map for deformations of (2,2) mirrors, the construction of mirror pairs from worldsheet duality, as well as an overview of some of the many open questions. The (0,2) mirrors of Hirzebruch surfaces are presented as a new example.

We study four-dimensional heterotic flux vacua with N=2 spacetime supersymmetry. A worldsheet perspective is used to clarify quantization conditions associated to the fluxes and the constraints these place on the moduli spaces of resulting compactifications. We propose that these vacua fit naturally in the context of heterotic/IIA duality as heterotic duals to compactifications on K3-fibered but not elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau three-folds. An N=1, d=4 supersymmetric compactification of the perturbative heterotic string is described by a d=2 (0,2) superconformal field theory. The first-order marginal deformations of the internal (0,2) SCFT are in 1 to 1 correspondence with massless gauge-neutral scalars in the spacetime theory. Working at tree-level in the alpha' expansion, we describe these first order deformations for SCFTs with a (0,2) non-linear sigma model description. Our results clarify the structure of deformations of heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications and more general heterotic flux vacua., Comment: 14 pages

Using mirror symmetry, we resolve an old puzzle in the linear sigma model description of the spacetime Higgs mechanism in a heterotic string compactification with (2,2) worldsheet supersymmetry. We study the non-linear sigma model realization of a heterotic vacuum with N=2 space-time supersymmetry. We enumerate massless E6 singlets for (0,2)-compactifications of the heterotic string on a Calabi-Yau threefold with the "standard embedding" in three distinct ways. In the large radius limit of the threefold, these singlets count deformations of the Calabi-Yau together with its tangent bundle. In the "small-radius" limit we apply Landau-Ginzburg methods. In the orbifold limit we use a combination of geometry and free field methods. In general these counts differ. We show how to identify states between these phases and how certain states vanish from the massless spectrum as one deforms the complex structure or Kaehler form away from the Gepner point. The appearance of extra singlets for particular values of complex structure is explored in all three pictures, and our results suggest that this does not depend on the Kaehler moduli., Comment: 51 pages, oversimplification in spectral sequence fixed

We study the linear sigma model subspace of the moduli space of (0,2) superconformal world-sheet theories obtained by deforming (2,2) theories based on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in reflexively plain toric varieties. We describe a set of algebraic coordinates on this subspace, formulate a (0,2) generalization of the monomial-divisor mirror map, and show that the map exchanges principal components of singular loci of the mirror half-twisted theories. We study (0,2) deformations of a (2,2) supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model for a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a Fano toric variety. In the non-linear sigma model these correspond to some of the holomorphic deformations of the tangent bundle on the hypersurface. We investigate the problem of the typical rotation states of the small planetary satellites from the viewpoint of the dynamical stability of their rotation. We show that the majority of the discovered satellites with unknown rotation periods cannot rotate synchronously, because no stable synchronous 1:1 spin-orbit state exists for them. They rotate either much faster than synchronously (those tidally unevolved) or, what is much less probable, chaotically (tidally evolved objects or captured slow rotators)., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We study the topological heterotic ring in (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models without a (2,2) locus. The ring elements correspond to elements of the Koszul cohomology groups associated to a zero-dimensional ideal in a polynomial ring, and the computation of half-twisted genus zero correlators reduces to a map from the first non-trivial Koszul cohomology group to complex numbers. This map is a generalization of the local Grothendieck residue. We study half-twisted linear sigma models relevant to (0,2) compactifications of the heterotic string. Focusing on theories with a (2,2) locus, we examine the linear model parameter space and the dependence of genus zero half-twisted correlators on these parameters. We show that in a class of theories the correlators and parameters separate into A and B types, present techniques to compute the dependence, and apply these to some examples. These results should bear on the mathematics of (0,2) mirror symmetry and the physics of the moduli space and Yukawa couplings in heterotic compactifications., Comment: 70 pages; typo's fixed; version to appear in JHEP

We study the properties of a few-electron system confined in coupled elongated quantum dots (QDs) using a model Gaussian potential and the numerical exact diagonalization technique. In the absence of magnetic fields, as the aspect ratio $r$ between the QD extensions in the direction perpendicular and parallel to the coupling directions increases, the exchange energy exhibits a sharp variation at the specific value $r=3.9$, before (after) which the exchange energy increases (declines). The sharp variation occurs because of a sudden change in the single-particle configuration of the triplet state. The stability region with one electron in each of the QDs is found to shrink, and finally vanishes as it becomes progressively easier to localize both electrons into the lower QD. We show that electrons in coupled quantum dots characterized by high aspect ratios undergo abrupt density rotations when the dots are biased into an asymmetric confinement configuration. Density rotations occur with electron transfer to a single dot, and give rise to sharp variations of the exchange coupling between electrons as a function of inter-dot detuning. Our analysis based on exact diagonalization technique indicates that this unusual behavior is in agreement with the von Neumann-Wigner theorem that dictates the variations of the energy spectrum from the symmetries of the molecular states during the detuning process. It is also shown that the overall effect is quenched by the presence of magnetic fields, which by adding angular momentum to the electron motion affects the spatial symmetry of the molecular states., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We theoretically investigate the properties of a two-electron system confined in the three-dimensional potential of coupled quantum dots formed in a quantum wire. For this purpose, we implement a variational Heitler-London method that minimize the system energies with respect to variational parameters in electron trial wavefunctions. We find that tunneling and exchange couplings exponentially decay with increasing inter-dot distance and inter-dot barrier height. In the quasi-one-dimensional limit achieved by reducing the wire diameter, we find that the overlap between the dots decreases, which results in a drop of the exchange coupling. We also discuss the validity of our variational Heitler-London method with respect to the model potential parameters, and compare our results with available experimental data to find good agreement between the two approaches., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Inherent asymmetry in the tunneling barriers of few-electron quantum dots induces intrinsically different tunneling currents for forward and reverse source-drain biases in the non-linear transport regime. Here we show that in addition to spin selection rules, overlap matrix elements between many-body states are crucial for the correct description of tunneling transmission through quantum dots at large magnetic fields. Signatures of excited (N-1)-electron states in the transport process through the N-electron system are clearly identified in the measured transconductances. It is known that the dependence of the emission-line luminosity of a typical cloud in the active galactic nuclei broad-line regions (BLRs) upon the incident flux of ionizing continuum can be nonlinear. We study how this nonlinearity can be taken into account in estimating the size of the BLR by means of the "reverberation" methods. We show that the BLR size estimates obtained by cross-correlation of emission-line and continuum light curves can be much (up to an order of magnitude) less than the values obtained by reverberation modelling. This is demonstrated by means of numerical cross-correlation and reverberation experiments with model continuum flares and emission-line transfer functions and by means of practical reverberation modelling of the observed optical spectral variability of NGC 4151. The time behaviour of NGC 4151 in the H_alpha and H_beta lines is modelled on the basis of the observational data by Kaspi et al. (1996, ApJ, 470, 336) and the theoretical BLR model by Shevchenko (1984, Sov. Astron. Lett., 10, 377; 1985, Sov. Astron. Lett., 11, 35). The values of the BLR parameters are estimated that allow to judge on the size and physical characteristics of the BLR. The small size of the BLR, as determined by the cross-correlation method from the data of Kaspi et al. (1996, ApJ, 470, 336), is shown to be an artifact of this method. So, the hypothesis that the BLR size varies in time is not necessitated by the observational data., Comment: 26 pages, including 11 figures

Hypermultiplet couplings in type IIA string theory on a Calabi-Yau space can be quantum corrected by D2-brane instantons wrapping special Lagrangian cycles. On the other hand, hypermultiplet couplings in the heterotic string on a K3 surface are corrected by world-sheet instantons wrapping curves. In a class of examples, we relate these two sets of instanton corrections. We first present an analogue of the c-map for the heterotic string via a dual flux compactification of M-theory. Using this duality, we propose two ways of capturing quantum corrections to hypermultiplets. We then use the orientifold limit of certain F-theory compactifications to relate curves in K3 to special Lagrangians in dual type IIA compactifications. We compute correlators of non-local observables in a large class of A-twisted massive Landau-Ginzburg and gauged linear sigma models by localization to the discrete vacua. Coupled elliptic quantum dots with different aspect ratios containing up to two electrons are studied using a model confinement potential in the presence of magnetic fields. Single and two particle Schroedinger equations are solved using numerical exact diagonolization to obtain the exchange energy and chemical potentials. As the ratio between the confinement strengths in directions perpendicular and parallel to the coupling direction of the double dots increases, the exchange energy at zero magnetic field increases, while the magnetic field of the singlet-triplet transition decreases. By investigating the charge stability diagram, we find that as inter-dot detuning increases, the absolute value of the exchange energy increases superlinearly followed by saturation. This behavior is attributed to the electron density differences between the singlet and triplet states in the assymetric quantum dot systems., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The charge stability diagram for two coupled quantum dots containing up to two electrons is computed in magnetic fields. One- and two-particle Schroedinger equations are solved by exact diagonalization to obtain the chemical potentials and exchange energy in these systems. By analyzing the chemical potentials variation with external biases and magnetic fields, it is possible to distinguish between the weak and strong inter-dot couplings. The variation of the chemical potential curvatures and the double-triple point separations in the stability diagrams confirms the inter-dot coupling decrease with increasing magnetic fields. The computed exchange energies are also found to be significantly smaller than the values estimated from the stability diagram.

We compute the contribution of discrete Coulomb vacua to A-Model correlators in toric Gauged Linear Sigma Models. For models corresponding to a compact variety, this determines the correlators at arbitrary genus. For non-compact examples, our results imply the surprising conclusion that the quantum cohomology relations break down for a subset of the correlators., Comment: 27 pages, 1 xy-pic figure

The magnetic field dependence of the electronic properties of \textit{real} single vertical quantum dots in circular and rectangular mesas is investigated within a full three-dimensional multiscale self-consistent approach without any {\it \'a priori} assumptions about the shape and strength of the confinement potential. The calculated zero field electron addition energies are in good agreement with available experimental data for both mesa geometries. Charging diagrams in a magnetic field for number of electrons up to five are also computed. Consistent with the experimental data, we found that the charging curves for the rectangular mesa dot in a magnetic field are flatter and exhibit less features than for a circular mesa dot. Evolution of the singlet-triplet energy separation in the two electron system for both dot geometries in magnetic field was also investigated. In the limit of large field, beyond the singlet-triplet transition, the singlet-triplet energy difference continues to become more negative in a circular mesa dot without any saturation within the range of considered magnetic fields whilst it is predicted to asymptotically approach zero for the rectangular mesa dot. This different behavior is attributed to the symmetry "breaking" that occurs in the singlet wave-functions in the rectangular mesa dot but not in the circular one., Comment: 12 pages, 8 gifures

We investigate toric GLSMs as models for tachyon condensation in type II strings on space-time non-supersymmetric orbifold singularities. The A-model correlators in these theories satisfy a set of relations related to the topology of the resolved orbifold. Using these relations we compute the correlators and find a non-trivial chiral ring in the IR, which we interpret as supported on isolated Coulomb vacua of the theory., Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures with xy-pic. Investigation of the specific oscillations with frequencies 15-30 kHz on the T-10 tokamak (R= 150cm, a = 30 cm) with Heavy Ion Beam Probe (HIBP) diagnostic was conducted in regimes with off-axis ECRH (B = 2.33 T, Ip= 220 kA, r_ECRH=12 cm). Previous experiments in OH regimes have shown that "20 kHz" modes are mainly the potential fluctuations. These oscillations are seen on the signals of HIBP, Langmuir probes and reflectometry. They should cause the fluctuations of the poloidal rotation, i.e. the torsional plasma oscillations with m=0, called as the zonal flows. The HIBP sample volume was localized at r = 24 - 29 cm. It was observed that both in OH and ECRH regimes, the power spectrum of potential oscillations has a form of solitary quasi-monochromatic peak with the contrast range of 3-5. The frequency of "20 kHz" mode is varied in the region of observation; it diminishes to the plasma edge from 20 kHz at 22-24 cm till 13-15 kHz at 28-29 cm. After ECRH switch-on, the frequency increases, correlating with growth of the electron temperature Te, measured by 2-nd ECE harmonic on the nearest chord 24 cm. Analysis have shown that frequency of the "20 kHz" mode is varied with local T_e: f_20 ~ T_e**1/2 that is similar to a theoretical scaling for Geodesic Acoustic Modes (GAM): f_GAM ~ c_s/R ~ T_e**1/2, where cs is a sound speed. The absolute frequencies are close to GAM values within a factor of unity (1.12-1.5).
