Abstract

We recently found that a cyclohexanecarboxamide derived from 4-azatetracyclo [5.3.2.02,6.08,10]dodec-11-ene displayed low nanomolar inhibition of 11β-HSD1. In continuation of our efforts to discover potent and selective 11β-HSD1 inhibitors, herein we explored several replacements for the cyclohexane ring. Some derivatives exhibited potent inhibitory activity against human 11β-HSD1, although with low selectivity over the isoenzyme 11β-HSD2, and poor microsomal stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

158. Unpacking Crisis Leader Behaviors: Exploring the Boundaries of Leader Effectiveness During Crises.

Abstract

While there is a large body of research on crisis leadership, this line of work lacks a systematic review of how crisis leader behaviors and crisis leader effectiveness are explored and conceptualized. More specifically, the field has underexplored the target of crisis leader behaviors and the actual beneficiaries of those behaviors. Adopting a multi-disciplinary, narrative technique, we reviewed 50 studies (2010-2020) on leader behaviors and effectiveness during crisis contexts that answer three key questions: 1) What leader behaviors are enacted in a crisis context? 2) Who are the main targets/stakeholders of leader behaviors in a crisis context? 3) Who benefits from leader behaviors in a crisis context (e.g., who are the behaviors effective for)? We report findings from our review, identifying six themes that emerged from the data: leader behaviors are context-specific, leader behaviors are primarily intended to create stability (compared to enhancement), leader behaviors are primarily internally focused, the public is a relevant stakeholder of leader behaviors, there is a target-benefit mismatch, and a general lack of clarity in the literature regarding what effective leader behaviors are and who they serve in a crisis context. We provide avenues for future research in the domains of crisis leadership, leader behaviors, and leader(ship) effectiveness - encouraging scholars and practitioners to consider the boundaries and consequences of leader behaviors. Abstract

Despite substantial progress, the grand challenge of and solutions to gender inequality demands critical updates in the post-pandemic world. In this symposium, we assemble five presentations to offer a contemporary and multifaceted understanding of gender inequity. Specifically, we study women's leadership challenges in new contexts by examining how women leaders manage crises during the Covid-19 pandemic, how working mothers organize their lunch breaks in the post-pandemic hybrid working mode, and when women can use charismatic signaling to elicit prosocial follower behaviors. We address the understudied intersection between gender and marriage structure and explore the unique challenges and responses of single childless women in the workplace. We deepen the understanding of unintended consequences of institutional and personal initiatives for gender inequality by studying the spill-over effects of family-friendly policies on single women and identity management tactics at work on performance at home. We hope that informing women's present-day challenges can inspire academics and practitioners to develop new solutions to the previously neglected challenges and adjust existing solutions to reduce their unintended negative consequences in the post-pandemic world. 160. Formulation, analysis and solution algorithms for a model of gradient plasticity within a discontinuous Galerkin framework

Abstract

[221]-239)., An investigation of a model of gradient plasticity in which the classical von Mises yield function is augmented by a term involving the Laplacian of the equivalent plastic strain is presented. The theory is developed within the framework of non-smooth convex analysis by exploiting the equivalence between the primal and dual expressions of the plastic deformation evolution relations. The nonlocal plastic evolution relations for the case of gradient plasticity are approximated using a discontinuous Galerkin finite element formulation. Both the small- and finite-strain theories are investigated. Considerable attention is focused on developing a firm mathematical foundation for the model of gradient plasticity restricted to the infinitesimal-strain regime. The key contributions arising from the analysis of the classical plasticity problem and the model of gradient plasticity include demonstrating the consistency of the variational formulation, and analyses of both the continuous-in-time and fully-discrete approximations; the error estimates obtained correspond to those for the conventional Galerkin approximations of the classical problem. The focus of the analysis is on those properties of the problem that would ensure existence of a unique solution for both hardening and softening problems. It is well known that classical finite element method simulations of softening problems are pathologically dependent on the discretisation.
