Abstract

Historically, mine planning schedules have been based on the most efficient extraction of ore. This can lead to a sub-optimal schedule if the schedule has to be altered when the required ventilation is not available. The architecture of a multiple-period ventilation planning tool is outlined, which can optimise the ventilation infrastructure and operation for a multi-level mine. A comparison between single- and multiple-period approaches to improving mine ventilation is presented. Both approaches are then used to resolve a real-sized problem. The two methods both produced feasible improved solutions, with the single-period approach taking less computer time., Historically, mine planning schedules have been based on the most efficient extraction of ore. 185. Inactivation of the p16 (INK4A) tumor-suppressor gene in pancreatic duct lesions: loss of intranuclear expression

Abstract

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma develops from histologically identifiable intraductal lesions that undergo a series of architectural, cytological, and genetic changes. Limited genetic evidence recently suggested that the p16 gene plays a role in the progression of these "duct lesions." Duct lesions were identified in pancreata from 33 pancreaticoduodenectomies performed for infiltrating adenocarcinoma. All of these infiltrating adenocarcinomas were previously shown to contain alterations in the p16 gene or its promoter. Monoclonal and polyclonal anti-p16 antibodies were used for histological immunodetection. One hundred twenty-six duct lesions were identified. Nine (30%) of 30 flat, 4 (27%) of 15 papillary, 37 (55%) of 67 papillary with atypia, and 10 (71%) of 14 carcinoma in situ duct lesions showed loss of p16 expression. These included 30% of the flat lesions versus 53% of the nonflat lesions and 29% of the nonatypical lesions versus 58% of the atypical lesions. For both comparisons, the differences were statistically significant (P = 0.036 and P = 0.003, respectively). Loss of p16 expression occurs more frequently, but not exclusively, in higher-grade duct lesions. These data support the hypothesis that pancreatic duct lesions are neoplastic and that they represent the precursors of infiltrating adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical detection of p16 provides a new technology to study the genetic alterations in and stages of progression of large numbers of morphologically defined pancreatic duct lesions

186. The employment benefits of organic farming

Abstract

Organic farming in the UK provides a range of economic and social benefi ts. In particular, it provides 32% more jobs per farm than equivalent non-organic farms. These new findings are based on the fi rst national survey of employment on UK organic farms, carried out by the University of Essex for the Soil Association. Organic farming is helping to reverse the decline in the UK’s agricultural workforce, which has fallen by 80% in the last 50 years. In contrast to the ageing overall farming population, organic farmers are, on average, seven years younger than their non-organic counterparts. Organic farmers are also three times more likely to be engaged in business innovations activities, such as direct marketing and on-farm processing. If all UK farmers adopted organic farming, it would produce an additional 93,000 on-farm jobs. These findings have significant implications for developing countries where a skilled agricultural workforce is vital to safeguard livelihoods and ensure global food security.

Abstract

New thermal conductivity K(T) mesaurements of quasi-one-dimensional single crystals (Ta_1-xNb_xSe_4)_2I (x = 0, 0.008, 0.01) are reported in the range 60 mK-6 K. K(T) clearly shows exceptionally sharp peaks in the vicinity of 1 K. We argue that this behavior comes from the effect of phonon Poiseuille flow in these systems originating from their strong anharmonicity amplified by the lattice anisotropy.

Abstract

A new design procedure for a class of multivariable integral plus proportional servo control systems is presented. The procedure utilizes a null space formulation of the eigensystem assignment problem assuming complete state feedback. Reduced order observers are used to estimate unavailable states. The resulting system realizes arbitrary closed-loop eigenvalues, approximates specified modal behavior and achieves low eigensystem sensitivity with respect to plant parameter variations. A tutorial example to illustrate the design procedure is included.

Abstract

A method for selecting a multivariable state feedback controller that simultaneously achieves an a priori specification on closed loop eigenvalues and good mode mixing is presented. The problem is solved by projecting a desired modal matrix onto a constraint set containing the null space of the closed-loop state matrix, while assuring that the projection is in the null space. The feedback matrix follows immediately in the formulation. An example involving a helicopter hover controller is presented.

Abstract

A new method of selecting a multivariable state feedback controller is presented. The resulting controller simultaneously realizes arbitrary closed-loop eigenvalues, approximates specified modal behavior and achieves low eigensystem sensitivity with respect to plant parameter variations. The method characterizes a vector space slightly larger than the null space of the closed-loop system matrix and projects a desired modal matrix onto this space. Sensitivity of eigenvalues and eigenvectors is then minimized local to the desired modal matrix using a gradient search technique. A tutorial example to illustrate the design procedure is given.
