- Abstract
G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are key players in the precise tuning of intercellullar communication. In the brain, both major neurotransmitters, glutamate and GABA, act on specific GPCRs [the metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) and GABA
B receptors] to modulate synaptic transmission. These receptors are encoded by the largest gene family, and have been found to associate into both homo- and hetero-oligomers, which increases the complexity of this cell communication system. Here we show that dimerization is required for mGlu and GABAB receptors to function, since the activation process requires a relative movement between the subunits to occur. We will also show that, in contrast to the mGlu receptors, which form strict dimers, the GABAB receptors assemble into larger complexes, both in transfected cells and in the brain, resulting in a decreased G-protein coupling efficacy. We propose that GABAB receptor oligomerization offers a way to increase the possibility of modulating receptor signalling and activity, allowing the same receptor protein to have specific properties in neurons at different locations. Abstract. The annual cycle of the testicular function (testis and epididymis weights and plasma testosterone levels) were considered in relation to seasonal variations in plasma LH and prolactin concentrations in two wild European mammals: the badger and the fox. Phase relationships were established between the annual prolactin cycles and daylight duration. The influence of castration on the seasonal variations in plasma LH levels was also studied. The resumption of activity in the testicular function occurs during autumn for both species. The reproduction period begins in winter but it is over by the beginning of spring for the fox whereas for the badger it lasts until early summer. In the same way, the annual cycle of the gonadotrophic function which, in the fox, presents only one maximum at the end of autumn, is bimodal in the badger with one maximum in January and a second in June. On the other hand, both species have a similar annual prolactin cycle, which shows an increase from the winter solstice onwards, in synchronization with the increase in daily light duration. The highest prolactin levels are measured in spring followed by a decrease during summer. This result calls into question the role played by prolactin in the regulation of the testicular function in as far as the two species have an annual reproductive cycle of the 'short-day' type (onset of activity occurring before the winter solstice) but show seasonal prolactin variations similar to those described for 'long-day' species.

171. A spontaneously seasonal hypercholesterolemic animal: plasma lipids and lipoproteins in the European badger (Meles meles L.).

- Abstract
The European badger has previously been shown to exhibit yearly cycles of locomotor activity, endocrine secretions, and body weight, as well as seasonal variations in plasma cholesterol. Over a period of 2 years, we have followed the plasma levels of free and esterified cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids, and of plasma lipoproteins (by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, agarose column chromatography and preparative and analytical ultracentrifugation). Some preliminary observations on the qualitative characteristics of the plasma apoproteins, obtained by application of electrophoretic techniques, are also described. Our results provide evidence for considerable synchronous and spontaneous variations of each of the plasma lipid components studied, all of them reaching a maximum in late autumn/early winter, then decreasing to a minimum in early spring. In some animals, the amplitude of observed variations was as large as 650% for total cholesterol, 420% for phospholipids and 180% for triglycerides. While the plasma concentration of very low density lipoproteins (d < 1.006 g/ml) remained at low or moderate levels, major changes in the lipoprotein spectrum occurred in the low density (1.006–1.063 g/ml) and high density (1.063–1.21 g/ml) lipoproteins, these two classes exhibiting marked heterogeneity. This led to an autumn/winter prominence of the 1,006–1.063 g/ml components and of those in the lower part of the high density range, with an enrichment in cholesterol in lipoproteins in the low density region. These phenomena occur simultaneously and/or immediately after the annual minimum of plasma thyroxine concentration in the species considered. In contrast, early spring patterns displayed more classical features with higher density lipoproteins predominating. Our findings thus suggest that the badger may provide a useful model for future experiments regarding the hormonal regulation of plasma lipid transport as well as the metabolism and physiopathological implications of some cholesterol-rich lipoproteins.

Summary.Previous studies have shown that there is a circadian rhythm of photosensitivity in different rodent species of the Sahel (Burkina Faso) and that, despite the low amplitude of seasonal variations in daylength, the photoperiod may control reproductive function. The present investigation of Arvicanthis niloticusprovides additional support for this hypothesis. Populations of Arvicanthis niloticusfrom two regions at the same latitude 1000 km apart but with different climates were studied. Oursi, Burkina Faso, has an arid climate (annual rainfall 315 mm) and Kamalé, Mali has a wetter climate (annual rainfall 1114 mm). The circadian rhythm of photosensitivity had the same features in both populations, involving inhibition of testicular activity, but the photosensitive phase began 11 h 30 min after dawn in the population from Burkina Faso and 45 min later in that from Mali. Comparison of these results with the annual variation of daylength showed that the photoperiod inhibits the reproductive activity of A. niloticusfrom April to December in Burkina Faso and only from mid-May to midAugust in Mali. The population of Arvicanthis niloticusliving in an environment with a large and seasonally stable food supply (Mali) thus has a longer reproductive period. - Abstract
A radio-tracking study of foxes’ movements (Vulpes vulpesL.) was conducted in the Chizé Forest (France). Five foxes captured as adults returned to their trapping zone during the night following their release, and very soon showed a settled occupation of their home-range. Their utilization of the home range changed in time. In the movements of adult foxes, the presence of a network of preferred ways, mainly situated along the forest roads, could be detected. The animals, however, also moved around a great deal without using this preferred network. Two foxes, captured young and sub-adult, showed first a period of erratic movements before they started coming back to the same burrow. The first movements they made from that burrow were very variable. The variability of foxes’ movements is discussed in relation to the notion of a cognitive map.

174. Short-term variations of plasma testosterone concentrations in the European badger (Meles meles)

Summary.Badgers were sampled once during the sexually inactive season (July–November) and during the breeding season (February–April) and testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay after separation by chromatography. Concentrations of both hormones were higher in the breeding than non-breeding season, but the mean ratio of testosterone to DHT was greater in the breeding (14) than in the non-breeding season (7). During the breeding season (March 1979) 18 adult male badgers were bled at 12-min intervals for 3 h over a period of 24 h. Testosterone concentrations were measured without chromatography. An episodic pattern of release was observed. All the animals exhibited peaks of large amplitude (1–30 ng/ml) which lasted for about 2 h. The great variability in mean testosterone values for each animal (1–13 ng/ml) could also have been due to differences in individual sexual status.

Cet article présente une analyse des relations anaphoriques d’un corpus de dialogue oral spontané en français. Au cours des deux dernières décennies, l’ingénierie des langues a connu des avancées spectaculaires qui ont permis l’émergence de nombreuses applications opérationnelles destinées aussi bien au grand public qu’aux professionnels. Parmi ces technologies langagières, la recherche d’information et l’indexation de documents constituent sans nul doute un des champs applicatifs promis à un bel avenir. En effet, la croissance exponentielle des ressources textuelles ou multimédias accessibles sur Internet nécessite la mise en place d’outils de structuration et d’interrogation automatique intelligents. Par exemple, la quasi-intégralité des articles publiés sur Internet par les quotidiens de la presse nationale ou régionale font l’objet d’une indexation automatique. L’importance de la résolution des anaphores pour les technologies langagières a conduit à l’émergence de nombreux travaux qui ont fait l’objet de campagnes d’évaluation internationales (MUC et SemEval) ou nationales (DEFT) au cours de la dernière décennie. Ces recherches ont toutefois porté majoritairement sur des documents ou des messages électroniques (langage écrit). A l’opposé, la communauté parole s’est surtout focalisée sur la problématique de l’anaphore pronominale, très présente en dialogue oral homme-machine (serveurs vocaux interactifs). La particularité de notre corpus se situe donc dans son caractère oral et dans le type des entités annotées (groupes nominaux et pronoms). Les avancées continues du traitement de la parole (reconnaissance vocale en particulier) amènent désormais les chercheurs à s’intéresser à une recherche d’information dans des flux oraux ou vidéos (émissions radio ou télédiffusées par exemple) équivalente à celle réalisée sur les documents électroniques. Dans cette perspective, il est essentiel de développer des techniques capables de traiter toutes les formes d’anaphores de l’oral spontané. Ainsi, cet article exposera plus particulièrement l’étude pilote CO2, qui a conduit à une procédure d’annotation de corpus, puis deux expériences issues du corpus annoté (l'accord en genre et en nombre, et la descriptions des définis en première mention), et enfin les travaux à venir du projet ANCOR. L’objectif de celui-ci est d’évaluer la pertinence et de modéliser les processus de résolution de ces anaphores complexes en discours spontané. Le corpus du projet ANCOR sera, à terme, le plus volumineux corpus de français parlé annoté en anaphores.

Young circumstellar disks are of prime interest to understand the physical and chemical conditions under which planet formation takes place. Only very few detections of planet candidates within these disks exist, and most of them are currently suspected to be disk features. In this context, the transition disk around the young star PDS 70 is of particular interest, due to its large gap identified in previous observations, indicative of ongoing planet formation. We aim to search for the presence of planets and search for disk structures indicative for disk-planet interactions and other evolutionary processes. We analyse new and archival near-infrared (NIR) images of the transition disk PDS 70 obtained with the VLT/SPHERE, VLT/NaCo and Gemini/NICI instruments in polarimetric differential imaging (PDI) and angular differential imaging (ADI) modes. We detect a point source within the gap of the disk at about 195 mas (about 22 au) projected separation. The detection is confirmed at five different epochs, in three filter bands and using different instruments. The astrometry results in an object of bound nature, with high significance. The comparison of the measured magnitudes and colours to evolutionary tracks suggests that the detection is a companion of planetary mass. We confirm the detection of a large gap of about 54 au in size within the disk in our scattered light images, and detect a signal from an inner disk component. We find that its spatial extent is very likely smaller than about 17 au in radius. The images of the outer disk show evidence of a complex azimuthal brightness distribution which may in part be explained by Rayleigh scattering from very small grains. Future observations of this system at different wavelengths and continuing astrometry will allow us to test theoretical predictions regarding planet-disk interactions, planetary atmospheres and evolutionary models.

We present the first hybrid measurement of the average muon number in air showers at ultrahigh energies, initiated by cosmic rays with zenith angles between 62° and 80°. The measurement is based on 174 hybrid events recorded simultaneously with the surface detector array and the fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The muon number for each shower is derived by scaling a simulated reference profile of the lateral muon density distribution at the ground until it fits the data. A 1019eV shower with a zenith angle of 67°, which arrives at the surface detector array at an altitude of 1450 m above sea level, contains on average (2.68±0.04±0.48(sys))×107 muons with energies larger than 0.3 GeV. Energy-dependent patterns in the arrival directions of cosmic rays are searched for using data of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We investigate local regions around the highest-energy cosmic rays with E ≥ 6×1019 eV by analyzing cosmic rays with energies above E ≥ 5×1018 eV arriving within an angular separation of approximately 15∘. We characterize the energy distributions inside these regions by two independent methods, one searching for angular dependence of energy-energy correlations and one searching for collimation of energy along the local system of principal axes of the energy distribution. No significant patterns are found with this analysis. The comparison of these measurements with astrophysical scenarios can therefore be used to obtain constraints on related model parameters such as strength of cosmic-ray deflection and density of point sources. © 2015, The Author(s)., 0, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

We analyze the distribution of arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory in 10 years of operation. The data set, about three times larger than that used in earlier studies, includes arrival directions with zenith angles up to $80^\circ$, thus covering from $-90^\circ$ to $+45^\circ$ in declination. After updating the fraction of events correlating with the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the V��ron-Cetty and V��ron catalog, we subject the arrival directions of the data with energies in excess of 40 EeV to different tests for anisotropy. We search for localized excess fluxes and for self-clustering of event directions at angular scales up to $30^\circ$ and for different threshold energies between 40~EeV and 80~EeV. We then look for correlations of cosmic rays with celestial structures both in the Galaxy (the Galactic Center and Galactic Plane) and in the local Universe (the Super-Galactic Plane). We also examine their correlation with different populations of nearby extragalactic objects: galaxies in the 2MRS catalog, AGNs detected by Swift-BAT, radio galaxies with jets and the Centaurus~A galaxy. None of the tests shows a statistically significant evidence of anisotropy. The strongest departures from isotropy (post-trial probability ${\sim}1.4$\%) are obtained for cosmic rays with $E>58$~EeV in rather large windows around Swift AGNs closer than 130~Mpc and brighter than $10^{44}$~erg/s (18$^\circ$ radius) and around the direction of Centaurus~A (15$^\circ$ radius)., Replaced with published version.
