The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on global public health, with long-term consequences that are still largely unknown. This study aimed to assess the data regarding acute cardiovascular hospital admissions in five European centers before and during the pandemic. A multicenter, multinational observational registry was created, comparing admissions to the emergency departments during a 3-months period in 2020 (during the pandemic) with the corresponding period in 2019 (pre-pandemic). Data on patient demographics, COVID-19 test results, primary diagnosis, comorbidities, heart failure profile, medication use, and laboratory results were collected. A total of 8778 patients were included in the analysis, with 4447 patients in 2019 and 4331 patients in 2020. The results showed significant differences in the distribution of cardiovascular diseases between the two years. The frequency of pulmonary embolism (PE) increased in 2020 compared to 2019, while acute heart failure (AHF) and other cardiovascular diseases decreased. The odds of PE incidence among hospitalized patients in 2020 were 1.316-fold greater than in 2019. The incidence of AHF was 50.83% less likely to be observed in 2020, and the odds for other cardiovascular diseases increased by 17.42% between the 2 years. Regarding acute coronary syndrome (ACS), the distribution of its types differed between 2019 and 2020, with an increase in the odds of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in 2020. Stratification based on sex revealed further insights. Among men, the incidence of AHF decreased in 2020, while other cardiovascular diseases increased. In women, only the incidence of STEMI showed a significant increase. When analyzing the influence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-positive patients had a higher incidence of PE compared to COVID-negative patients. COVID-positive patients with ACS also exhibited symptoms of heart failure more frequently than COVID-negative patients. These findings provide valuable information on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on acute cardiovascular hospital admissions. The increased incidence of PE and changes in the distribution of other cardiovascular diseases highlight the importance of monitoring and managing cardiovascular health during and post pandemic period. Introduction: This study aimed to present the clinical features and results of treatment of patients diagnosed with refractory or relapsed acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in Polish Paediatric Leukaemia/Lymphoma Study Group (PPL/LSG) institutions, treated in accordance with the Protocol Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster 2012, as their first-line therapy., Material and Methods: The outcome data of 10 patients with refractory AML (median age 9.5 years) and 30 with relapsed AML (median age 12 years) were analysed retrospectively. Re-induction was usually based on idarubicin, fludarabine, and cytarabine along with allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (allo-HSCT) in 5 patients with refractory AML and 7 relapsed AML children., Results: 37.5% (3/8) of refractory AML patients achieved second complete remission second complete remission (CRII). One of ten patients (1/10; 10%) was alive and stayed in complete remission for 34 months after the allo-HSCT. The probability of 3-year event-free survival (pEFS) in this group was 0.125 ±0.11. In the group of relapsed AML patients, the CRII was achieved in 9 patients (34%), and the probability of survival was: pEFS = 0.24 ±0.08; probability overall survival (pOS) = 0.34 ±0.09, with significantly better results achieved in patients who underwent allo-HSCT (pOS = 0.54 ±0.14 vs. 0.08 ±0.08, p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: The prognosis of refractory AML and the first AML recurrence in children who were first-line treated in PPL/LSG centres according to Protocol Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster 2012 is poor. Failures of re-induction treatment particularly result from difficulties in achieving remission. Allogeneic HSCT improves prognosis in children with refractory and first recurrent AML, under the condition it is performed in complete remission. Background: The effect of age on the incidence of late sequelae that occur after anticancer treatment in childhood is still not fully elucidated. In this multicenter study of long-term survivors diagnosed before age of three, we investigated the prevalence of late effects many years after treatment., Methods: The study group (n = 561) was selected from the Polish National Childhood Cancer Survivors Registry (n = 1761) created in 2007. A survivor was defined as an individual who has survived at least 5 years after completion of anticancer treatment. All children were diagnosed between 1991 and 2016, mean age at diagnosis was 1.82 years (range 0.03-2.99) and median follow up time - 9.85 years (range 5.0-23.6). They were treated in accordance with international protocols approved by the Polish Pediatric Leukemia and Lymphoma Group and Polish Solid Tumor Group. Chemotherapy alone was used in 192 (34.2%), chemotherapy and radiotherapy - 56 (10%), chemotherapy and surgery - 176 (31.4%), chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery - 79 (14.1%), and surgery alone in 58 patients (10.3%)., Results: Of all patients enrolled to the study, only 94 (16.8%) had normal function of all organs. Seventy-six (13.5%) children developed dysfunction in one organ, another 83 (14.8%) had symptoms or complaints suggestive of dysfunction in two organs or systems, 88 (15.7%) had abnormalities in three organs, and 220 (39.2%) had at least four or more dysfunctions. In the entire study group, dysfunctions most frequently (> 20% of cases) involved the following organs/systems: circulatory - 21.8%, urinary - 30.8%, gastrointestinal - 20.8%, immune - 23.5%, vision - 20.7%, hearing - 21.8%, and oral and masticatory dysfunction - 26.9%. We did not find any significant differences in organ dysfunction between children diagnosed under the age of 1 and those diagnosed at the age of 1-3, except for a lower incidence of thyroid abnormalities (p = 0.007) and the higher prevalence of liver dysfunction in youngest patients. In the subset with longer follow-up period (> 10 years) more frequent thyroid abnormalities (p = 0.019), male (p = 0.002) and female (p = 0.026) gonads dysfunction, as well as musculoskeletal problems (p < 0.001) were observed. Among subjects who received radiotherapy compared to those who did not, short stature (p = 0.001), and dysfunction of the following systems/organs - circulatory (p = 0.049), urinary (p = 0.012), thyroid gland (p < 0.0001), nervous (p = 0.007), immunological (p = 0.002), liver (p = 0.03), dental or chewing difficulties (p = 0.001), hearing (p = 0.001) and musculoskeletal (p = 0.026) were more frequently reported. When multimodal therapy was applied (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery) a higher incidence of short stature (p = 0.007), urinary system disorders (p < 0.0001), thyroid dysfunction (p < 0.0001), hearing loss (p < 0.0001), and skin problems (p = 0.031) were observed., Conclusion: This study confirms that radiotherapy and some specific toxicity of cytostatics are the most important factors affecting organ function. Apart from a higher incidence of liver dysfunction in the youngest patients, there were no significant differences in organ and system toxicities between children diagnosed under the age of 1 and those diagnosed at the age of 1-3. Viral infections can be a serious complication of therapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In this study, we focused on the incidence and the profile of viral infection in children with ALL treated in 17 pediatric oncology centers in Poland in the two-year periods of 2018-2019 and 2020-2021. We also compared the frequency of viral infections in 2018-2019 to that in 2020-2021. In 2020-2021, a total of 192 children with ALL had a viral infection during intensive chemotherapy. A total number of 312 episodes of viral infections were diagnosed. The most common infections detected in the samples were: COVID-19 (23%), rhinovirus (18%), and respiratory syncytial virus (14%). COVID-19 and BK virus infections were the reason for the death 1% of all patients. In 2018-2019, a total of 53 ALL patients who had a viral infection were reported and 72 viral events were observed, mainly adenovirus (48.6%), rotavirus (31.9%), and herpes zoster (8.3%). No deaths were reported during this period. The cumulative incidence of viral infections in 2018-2019 was 10.4%, while for 2020-2021, it was 36.7%. In conclusion, a high incidence of COVID-19 infection was observed among pediatric patients with ALL in Poland. The mortality rate in our material was low. The viral profile in ALL children undergoing chemotherapy can be useful for clinicians to improve prophylactic and therapeutic strategies.

The strongest predictors of outcome in pediatric B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) are minimal residual disease (MRD) and specific molecular abnormalities. One unfavorable prognostic factor is the presence of IKZF1 gene aberrations, particularly when co-occurring with high MRD level at the end of induction treatment. The present study determines the predictive value of a recently-defined IKZF1-plus (IKZF1 plus ) microdeletion profile in 373 children with BCP-ALL treated according to the ALL-intercontinental Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster protocol 2009 protocol. IKZF1-wild type (IKZF1 wt ) patients demonstrated lower leukemic burden parameters than those carrying IKZF1 deletion (IKZF1 del [n = 26, 7.0%]) or IKZF1 plus pattern (n = 34, 9.1%): (i) median blast percentage at diagnosis (78.0% vs. 86.9% vs. 86.0%; p = 0.021); (ii) median MRD level at day 15 of induction protocol (0.3% vs. 2.1% vs. 0.8%; p = 0.011); (iii) poor steroid response (7.6% vs. 26.5% vs. 12.5%; p = 0.010). Minimal residual disease level at day 33 (MRD33) exceeding 10 -4 was more frequently observed in both the IKZF1 del and IKZF1 plus subgroups than in IKZF1 wt patients (n = 9 [36.0%] vs. n = 13 [41.9%] vs. n = 70 [24.0%], p = 0.051). IKZF1 plus individuals showed a tendency for a lower MRD reduction between day 15 and 33 compared to IKZF1 del patients (p = 0.124). IKZF1 del and IKZF1 plus patients showed decreased relapse-free survival (HR [95%CI] for IKZF1 wt as reference = 2.72 [1.21-6.11] and 2.00 [0.87-4.49], respectively, p = 0.023). Both genetic markers including IKZF1 del and IKZF1 plus microdeletion profile provide additional predictive value of treatment outcome in childhood BCP-ALL and may contribute to more efficient patient stratification; the same is true in MRD guided protocols, which are based on flow cytometric measurements on day 15 of induction protocol., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Introduction: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is an extramedullary malignant tumor composed of immature myeloid cells. It occurs in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), or chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). MS may coincide with disease diagnosis or precede bone marrow involvement by months or even years; it can also represent the extramedullary manifestation of a relapse (1, 2)., Aim: The aim of this study is to describe clinical characteristics of children diagnosed with MS in Poland as well as to analyze diagnostic methods, treatment, and outcomes including overall survival (OS), relapse-free survival (RFS), and event-free survival (EFS). The study also attempted to identify factors determining treatment outcomes., Patients: The study group comprised 43 patients (F=18, M=25) aged 0-18 years (median age, 10.0 years; mean age, 8.8 years) diagnosed with MS based on tumor biopsy and immunohistochemistry or identification of underlying bone marrow disease and extramedullary tumor according to imaging findings., Methods: The clinical data and diagnostic and therapeutic methods used in the study group were analyzed. A statistical analysis of the treatment outcomes was conducted with STATISTICA v. 13 (StatSoft, Inc., Tulsa, OK, USA) and analysis of survival curves was conducted with MedCalc 11.5.1 (MedCalc Software, Ostend, Belgium). Statistical significance was considered at p<0.05., Results: In the study group, MS was most frequently accompanied by AML. The most common site of involvement was skin, followed by orbital region. Skin manifestation of MS was more common in the age group <10 years. The most frequent genetic abnormality was the t(8;21)(q22;q22) translocation. The 5-year OS probability (pOS), 5-year RFS probability (pRFS), and 5-year EFS probability (pEFS) were 0.67 ± 0.08, 0.79 ± 0.07, and 0.65 ± 0.08, respectively. In patients with isolated MS and those with concurrent bone marrow involvement by AML/MDS, pOS values were 0.56 ± 0.12 and 0.84 ± 0.09 (p=0.0251), respectively, and pEFS values were 0.56 ± 0.12 and 0.82 ± 0.08 (p=0.0247), respectively. In patients with and without the t(8;21)(q22;q22) translocation, pEFS values were 0.90 ± 0.09 and 0.51 ± 0.14 (p=0.0490), respectively., Conclusions: MS is a disease with a highly variable clinical course. Worse treatment outcomes were observed in patients with isolated MS compared to those with concurrent bone marrow involvement by AML/MDS. Patients with the t(8;21)(q22;q22) translocation were found to have significantly higher pEFS. MS location, age group, chemotherapy regimen, surgery, and/or radiotherapy did not have a significant influence on treatment outcomes. Patients with hemato-oncologic diseases are particularly vulnerable to severe infections. Adult patients with blood cancers infected with SARS-CoV-2 had poorer treatment outcomes and higher mortality than patients with COVID-19 without burden. However, in pediatric patients with hemato-oncologic diseases the course of COVID-19 is milder than in adults in the same group of patients. In this report, we describe the case of our patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia infected with SARS-CoV-2 and treated with remdesivir. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) currently constitutes the leading and overwhelming health issue worldwide. In comparison with adults, children present milder symptoms, with most having an asymptomatic course. We hypothesized that COVID-19 infection has a negative impact on the continuation of chemotherapy and increases nonrelapse mortality., Material and Methods: This study was performed to assess the course of SARS-CoV-2 among children with hematological or oncological malignancies and its impact on cancer therapy. Records of SARS-CoV-2 infection in 155 children with malignancies from 14 Polish centers for pediatric hematology and oncology were collected and analyzed., Results: SARS-CoV-2 replication was observed in 155 patients. Forty-nine patients were symptomatic, with the following being the most common manifestations: fever (31 patients), gastrointestinal symptoms (10), coryza (13), cough (13) and headache (8). In children who were retested, the median time of a positive PCR result was 16 days (range 1-70 days), but 12.7% of patients were positive beyond day + 20. The length of viral PCR positivity correlated with the absolute neutrophil count at diagnosis. Seventy-six patients did not undergo further SARS-CoV-2 testing and were considered convalescents after completion of isolation. Antibiotic therapy was administered in 15 children, remdesivir in 6, convalescent plasma in 4, oxygen therapy in 3 (1-mechanical ventilation), steroids in 2, intravenous immunoglobulins in 2, and heparin in 4. Eighty patients were treated with chemotherapy within 30 days after SARS-CoV-2 infection diagnosis or were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection during 30 days of chemotherapy administration. Respiratory symptoms associated with COVID-19 and associated with oxygen therapy were present in 4 patients in the study population, and four deaths were recorded (2 due to COVID-19 and 2 due to progressive malignancy). The probability of 100-day overall survival was 97.3% (95% CI 92.9-99%). Delay in the next chemotherapy cycle occurred in 91 of 156 cases, with a median of 14 days (range 2-105 days)., Conclusions: For the majority of pediatric cancer patients, SARS-CoV-2 infection does not result in a severe, life-threatening course. Background: From 1983, standardized therapeutic protocols for pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) based on the BFM group experience were introduced in Poland. We retrospectively analyzed the results of pediatric AML treatment in Poland from 1983 to 2019 (excluding promyelocytic, therapy-related, biphenotypic, and Down syndrome AML)., Methods: The study included 899 children suffering from AML treated with the following: AML-PPPLBC 83 (1983-1993, n = 187), AML-PPGLBC 94 (1994-1997, n = 74), AML-PPGLBC 98 (1998-2004, n = 151), AML-BFM 2004 Interim (2004-2015, n = 356), and AML-BFM 2012 (2015-2019, n = 131)., Results: The probability of three-year overall survival was 0.34 ± 0.03, 0.37 ± 0.05, 0.54 ± 0.04, 0.67 ± 0.03, and 0.75 ± 0.05; event-free survival was 0.31 ± 0.03, 0.34 ± 0.05, 0.44 ± 0.04, 0.53 ± 0.03, and 0.67 ± 0.05; and relapse-free survival was 0.52 ± 0.03, 0.65 ± 0.05, 0.58 ± 0.04, 0.66 ± 0.03, and 0.78 ± 0.05, respectively, in the subsequent periods. A systematic reduction of early deaths and deaths in remission was achieved, while the percentage of relapses decreased only in the last therapeutic period. Surprisingly good results were obtained in the group of patients treated with AML-BFM 2012 with unfavorable genetic abnormalities like KMT2A-MLLT10/t(10;11)(p12;q23) and DEK-NUP214/t(6;9)(p23;q24), while unsatisfactory outcomes were found in the patients with FLT3-ITD., Conclusions: The use of standardized, systematically modified therapeutic protocols, with the successive consideration of genetic prognostic factors, and advances in supportive care led to a significant improvement in AML treatment outcomes over the last 40 years.

The aim of the study was to retrospectively compare the effectiveness of the ALL IC-BFM 2002 and ALL IC-BFM 2009 protocols and the distribution of risk groups by the two protocols after minimal residual disease (MRD) measurement as well as its impact on survival. We reviewed the medical records of 3248 patients aged 1-18 years with newly diagnosed ALL who were treated in 14 hemato-oncological centers between 2002 and 2018 in Poland. The overall survival (OS) of 1872 children with ALL treated with the ALL IC 2002 protocol was 84% after 3 years, whereas the OS of 1376 children with ALL treated with the ALL IC 2009 protocol was 87% (P < 0.001). The corresponding event-free survival rates were 82% and 84% (P = 0.006). Our study shows that the ALL IC-BFM 2009 protocol improved the results of children with ALL compared to the ALL IC-BFM 2002 protocol in Poland. This analysis confirms that MRD marrow assessment on day 15 of treatment by FCM-MRD is an important predictive factor.

11q23/ MLL rearrangements are frequently detected in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia. The analysis of their clinical significance is difficult because of the multitude of translocation fusion partners and their low frequency. The presence of t(10;11)(p12;q23) translocation was previously identified in pediatric acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). It is considered as the second most common translocation detected in pediatric 11q23/ MLL -rearranged (present KMT2A ) AML, after t(9;11)(p22;q23). The presence of the above translocation was previously identified as an unfavorable prognostic factor. Since June 2015, the Polish Pediatric Leukemia/Lymphoma Study Group has applied the therapeutic protocol requiring extensive diagnostics of genetic changes in pediatric AML. Until November 2019, molecular genetic studies were performed in 195 children with diagnosed AML to identify carriers of fusion gene transcripts for 28 most common chromosomal translocations in acute leukemia. The fusion gene transcript for translocation t(10;11)(p12;q23) involving MLL gene was detected with unexpectedly high frequency (8.9%) in our research. It was the highest frequency of all detected MLL rearrangements, as well as other detected fusion gene transcripts from chromosomal aberrations characteristic for AML. It seems that chromosomal aberration between chromosomes 10 and 11 can be relatively frequent in some populations. Objectives: The aim of this population-based, retrospective study was to analyze biological and clinical features and treatment results in children diagnosed with MPAL in all Polish pediatric oncology centers between 2007 and 2018., Methods: Among 2893 children and adolescents diagnosed and treated for acute leukemia, 39 (1.35%) patients fulfilled the WHO criteria of MPAL. The T/myeloid phenotype was most prevalent., Results: Cytogenetics findings were seen in 2 (5.1%), while chromosomal abnormalities were found in 14 (35.9%) patients. Thirty-two patients achieved CR-1, including 23 (92.0%) treated with ALL-directed chemotherapy and 9 (64.3%) treated with AML-type induction regimens. Within these patients, 4 (12.5%) died due to treatment-related complications and 11 (34.4%) relapsed. Nineteen (63.3%) patients underwent allo-HSCT in CR-1 and 14 (73.7%) of them have been in CR-1. In total, 17 (43.6%) patients remain in CR-1 for 1-12 years, including 14 (58.3%) with T/myeloid MPAL. The 5-year pOS and pEFS were 51.8% and 44.2%, respectively. The overall survival for ALL-directed therapy was significantly better than the one for AML-type chemotherapy (P = .001). Background: The aim of the study was to analyze the treatment outcome and genetic characteristics of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) in children in Poland from 2005 to 2018. Methods: All 41 patients diagnosed with APL in Poland during the analysis period were eligible for the study. In period I (2005-2015), 33 patients were treated with chemotherapy and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and in period II (2015-2018), 3 patients (high risk) received induction chemotherapy with ATRA and arsenic trioxide (ATO), and 5 patients (standard risk) received ATRA and ATO without chemotherapy. Results: Probability of 5-years overall survival (OS), event-free survival (EFS), and relapse-free survival (RFS) was 0.819 ± 0.069, 0.831 ± 0.063, and 0.961 ± 0.037, respectively, in the whole cohort. Four (11%) early deaths were observed. One patient died of severe infection in the course of disease progression. Relapse occurred in one patient, who died finally because of disease progression. All events occurred in the patients from period I. Variant APL was identified in one patient (successfully treated with chemotherapy with ATRA) and complex translocation in one patient (the only patient with relapse). Additional chromosomal aberrations were found in 26% of patients and FLT3-ITD mutation was detected in 44% of patients; none of those changes influenced clinical outcome. Conclusion: Treatment outcome in the analyzed group is similar to the results reported by other study groups. The main cause of death was coagulation disorders in the early stage of disease. Anti-cancer treatment in children can deteriorate gonadal function and affect future fertility. We analyzed the hormonal markers of gonadal function in adolescent leukemia survivors, treated in childhood with different levels of aggressiveness. We analyzed hormone levels in 69 adolescents and young adults, leukemia survivors stratified into standard (SR), intermediate (IR), and high (HR) risk groups, and in 80 healthy controls (38 men) at a similar age. We assessed follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and inhibin B in the whole group, testosterone in males, and E2 and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in females. Males classified into HR group presented, in comparison to control, higher levels of FSH, LH, lower inhibin B, and normal testosterone, whereas in SR and IR group, the hormonal values were comparable to the control. In females, in all risk groups, the levels of FSH, LH, E2, and inhibin B were comparable with the control, but the mean AMH levels were slightly lowered. We did not observe the effect of prophylactic cranial irradiation (12 or 18 Gy) or the time of treatment (before vs. during puberty) on hormone levels. In females, a positive correlation was found between the time interval after the end of treatment and AMH levels. Male leukemia survivors having undergone more intensive chemotherapy show the symptoms of disturbed spermatogenesis and need to be followed-up in the future. Women, irrespective of the risk group, can develop the signs of preterm ovarian insufficiency. The aim of this nationwide study was to describe the epidemiology and profile of bacterial infections (BI), invasive fungal disease (IFD) and viral infections (VI) in patients with de novo and relapsed/refractory (rel/ref) acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Within the studied group of 250 children with primary AML, at least one infectious complication (IC) was diagnosed in 76.0% ( n  = 190) children including 85.1% ( n  = 504) episodes of BI, 8.3% ( n  = 49) - IFD and 6.6% ( n  = 39) - VI. Among 61 patients with rel/ref AML, at least one IC was found in 67.2% ( n  = 41) of children including 78.8% ( n  = 78) of BI, 14.1% ( n  = 14) of IFD and 7.1% ( n  = 7) of VI. In all AML patients, within BI Gram-negative strains were predominant. Half of these strains were multi-drug resistant. Characteristics of IFD and VI were comparable for de novo and rel/ref AML. The infection-related mortality was significantly higher, while survival from infection was significantly lower in patients with rel/ref disease.

Splenectomy is considered standard surgical therapy in hereditary spherocytosis. The procedure is indicated in patients with severe anemia, recurrent hemolytic, and aplastic crises. The aim of the study was to assess treatment outcomes in patients with hereditary spherocytosis who underwent total or partial laparoscopic splenectomy. Fifteen patients aged 4-17 yr underwent laparoscopic splenectomy from 2009 to 2012. Partial and total splenectomies were performed (five and 10 children, respectively). Hematologic parameters, liver function tests, and splenic volume before and after the surgery were analyzed retrospectively. Total follow-up was 1-30 months. Hospitalization and operating time were similar in both groups. In partial splenectomy group, branches of splenic arteries gave better blood supply than short gastric vessels. In both groups, hematologic parameters were improved. Postoperative markedly elevated platelet count was maintained up to 6 months, and after that, platelet count gradually decreased to normal values. Bilirubin level was decreased in early postoperative period; however, it increased later to achieve levels lower than in preoperative period. No severe general infections were observed in both groups. Laboratory parameters (hemoglobin and bilirubin concentrations and RBC) after the surgery improved in all patients, and the effect was maintained during 12 months of follow-up. Platelet count increased significantly after the surgery and was maintained at high levels during the next 6 months. However, it returned to preoperative levels within a year after the surgery. Our study showed that partial splenectomy was not inferior to total splenectomy. However, full assessment requires longer follow-up and larger group of patients., (© 2015 John Wiley & Sons A/S.
