152. Pressure history at the thrust wall of a simplified pulse detonation engine

Abstract

Gas dynamics in a simplified pulse detonation engine (PDE) was theoretically analyzed. A PDE was simplified as a straight tube with a fixed cross section. One end of the tube was closed, namely, this end was the thrust wall, and the other end was open. A detonation wave was initiated at the closed end and simultaneously started to propagate toward the open end. When the detonation wave broke out from the open end, a rarefaction wave started to propagate from the open end toward the closed end. This rarefaction wave was reflected by the closed end. By considering this rarefaction wave to be self-similar in the analysis of the interference between this rarefaction wave and its reflection from the closed end, we analytically formulated the decay portion of the pressure history at the closed end (thrust wall) without any empirical parameters. By integrating the obtained pressure history at the thrust wall with respect to time, important performance parameters of a PDE were also formulated. The obtained formulas were compared with numerical and experimental results and agreed with them very well.

Abstract

The first Damkohler parameter used in predicting the unsteady flow regime in shock-induced combustion around a hypervelocity spherical projectile into a stoichiometric hydrogen-air gas mixture is presented. The first Damkohler number is an effective nondimensional parameter that can be realized by computing the chemical and fluid characteristics only, without time-consuming ballistic range experiments or flow simulations on high-performance computers. The validation of prediction method is discussed.

Abstract

The flow characteristics of an unsteady shock-induced combustion around projectiles are examined numerically by a finite difference method. The large-disturbance regime of the unsteady combustion, which has low-frequency and high-amplitude oscillation, is studied by a series of simulations considering an oxygen-hydrogen combustion mechanism under the same situation as the experiment. The grid refinement study is performed to prove that the flow characteristics obtained are grid independent and are real.

Abstract

Geometric throats are commonly applied to rocket combustors to increase pressure and specific impulse. This paper presents the results from thrust measurements of an ethylene/gas-oxygen rotating detonation engine with various throat geometries in a vacuum chamber to simulate varied backpressure conditions in a range of 1.1–104 kPa. For the throatless case, the detonation channel area was regarded to be equivalent the throat area, and three throat-contraction ratios were tested: 1, 2.5, and 8. Results revealed that combustor pressure was approximately proportional to equivalent throat mass flux for all test cases. Specific impulse was measured for a wide range of pressure ratios, defined as the ratio of the combustor pressure to the backpressure in the vacuum chamber. The rotating detonation engine could achieve almost the same level of optimum specific impulse for each backpressure, whether or not flow was squeezed by a geometric throat. In addition, heat-flux measurements using heat-resistant material are summarized. Temporally and spatially averaged heat flux in the engine were roughly proportional to channel mass flux. Heat-resistant material wall compatibility with two injector shapes of doublet and triplet injection is also discussed.

Abstract

A simplified two-step chemical reaction model provides the numerical analysis of large-disturbance oscillations in unsteady combustion around a spherical projectile in supersonic flows. The model consists of the induction and exothermic reactions. The regime of the unsteady flowfield is related to the intensity of the concentration of heat release. The experimental and theoretical values of the period of the peak shock pressures are in good agreement.

Abstract

Numerical investigations were carried out to characterize the flow dynamics of shock-induced combustion around a projectile traveling at hypervelocity. The Euler equations were employed to create an x-t diagram of the flow variable on the stagnation streamline. The time integration of the species equations was then used to determine the key factors that influence the flow instability and the frequency of the periodic unsteadiness. Results indicate that these factors include the induction time, heat release and the concentration of the heat release.
