Abstract: The destruction process of large non-truncated stacking fault tetrahedra (SFTs) induced by gliding dislocations was examined by in situ transmission electron microscope straining experiments. Three different destruction processes were observed: a triangular Frank loop remained after the collapse (Type 1), the whole SFT was incorporated into a gliding dislocation as multiple super jog segments (Type 2), and an apex portion of the original SFT remained as a smaller SFT while the base portion was annihilated (Type 3). The remnants of Type 1 and 2 destruction processes were similar to those of previous models proposed by Kimura, indicating that these processes are based on dislocation reactions as assumed in Kimura models. On contrary, the Type 3 process, which was entirely different from Kimura models, is occasionally accompanied by vacancy migration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The current understanding of defect production fundamentals in neutron-irradiated face centered cubic (FCC) and body centered cubic (BCC) metals is briefly reviewed, based primarily on transmission electron microscope observations. Experimental procedures developed by Michio Kiritani and colleagues have been applied to quantify defect cluster size, density, and nature. Differences in defect accumulation behavior of irradiated BCC and FCC metals are discussed. Depending on the defect cluster obstacle strength, either the dispersed barrier hardening model or the Friedel–Kroupa–Hirsch weak barrier model can be used to describe major aspects of radiation hardening. Irradiation at low temperature can cause a change in deformation mode from dislocation cell formation at low doses to twinning or dislocation channeling at higher doses. The detailed interaction between dislocations and defect clusters helps determine the dominant deformation mode. Recent observations of the microstructure created by plastic deformation of quenched and irradiated metals are summarized, including in situ deformation results. Examples of annihilation of stacking fault tetrahedra by gliding dislocations and subsequent formation of mobile superjogs are shown. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Heavy plastic deformation of fcc metal thin foils to fracture has been found recently to proceed without involving dislocations, and it results in the formation of high density of vacancy clusters. Thin foil specimens of bcc metals such as V and Mo were plastically deformed to fracture in in situ elongation experiments under an electron microscope. Morphology of thinning and fracture was found to be similar to fcc metals, and no dislocation was observed during heavy deformation. Electron diffraction analysis at the tip of a crack during deformation confirmed a large elastic deformation of up to 5%. Unlike in fcc metal thin foil specimens, point defect clusters were not observed near fractured tips. This difference is attributed to the difference in vacancy reaction, though the deformation in bcc metals without dislocation most likely does produce vacancies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The effect of deformation speed on defect structures introduced into bulk gold specimens at 298 K has been investigated systematically over a wide range of strain rate from ϵ′=10−2 to 106 s−1. As strain rate increased, dislocation structure changed from heterogeneous distribution, so-called cell structure, to random distribution. Also, stacking fault tetrahedra (SFTs) were produced at anomalously high density by deformation at high strain rate. The anomalous production of SFTs observed at high strain rate is consistent with the characteristic microstructure induced by dislocation-free plastic deformation, which has been recently reported in deformation of gold thin foils. Thus, the results of the present study indicate that high-speed deformation induces an abnormal mechanism of plastic deformation, which falls beyond the scope of dislocation theory. Numerical analysis of dislocation structure and SFTs revealed that the transition point of variation of deformation mode is around the strain rate of 103 s−1. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Ductile fracture of metals produces a thin foil portion, which is observable by transmission electron microscopy, at the fractured edge. The thin foil portion shows unusual deformation microstructure, which contains no dislocations, but contains vacancy-type point defect clusters at extraordinarily high density. Dynamic observation of the deformation process revealed that these defect clusters are produced in the portion of local heavy deformation; however, no dislocation motion was observed during the course of the heavy plastic deformation, constituting direct evidence that the unusual deformation microstructure is produced by plastic deformation without dislocations. Also, the deformation was found to involve 14% elastic deformation, indicating that the dislocation-free plastic deformation occurs under an extraordinarily high internal stress level of more than 10 GPa, which is comparable to the ideal strength of metals. Furthermore, during the dislocation-free plastic deformation, equal-thickness fringes were found to disappear temporarily, suggesting that instability of crystalline state under extraordinarily high internal stress level is a key factor for the mechanism of dislocation-free plastic deformation. Dislocation-free plastic deformation, which occurs under extraordinarily high internal stress comparable to ideal strength of metals, was discovered in thin foil portion produced by ductile fracture of fcc Au by dynamic observation of the deformation process . In the present study, the deformation process of thin foil portion in other fcc metals (Al, Cu, Ni) was examined in the same manner. In all these fcc metals, production of vacancy-type point defect clusters was confirmed during deformation without dislocations. Also, the dislocation-free deformation was found to progress under extraordinarily high internal stress levels corresponding to 14% elastic deformation in Ni, 12% in Cu, and 4% in Al. Especially in Al, as temperature decreased, the number density of stacking fault tetrahedra produced during deformation increased, along with increasing of the detected elastic deformation. These results indicate that internal stress level is a key factor in generalizing the new theory regarding dislocation-free plastic deformation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A 40-year-old woman with amyopathic dermatomyositis (ADM) developed acute pneumonitis. Despite pulse methylprednisolone therapy, the pneumonitis worsened. We therefore initiated cyclosporin-A (Cy-A) therapy with success, although Pneumocystis carinii (PC) pneumonia occurred. Coexistence of dermatomyositis (DM)-related pneumonitis and PC pneumonia was diagnosed by means of chest X-ray findings, KL-6, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for PC. We thus continued Cy-A therapy to ameliorate the pneumonitis. Cy-A appeared to be effective for corticosteroid-resistant pneumonitis in a patient with DM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To clarify the prevalence of subclinical renal tubular acidosis (RTA) and its association with clinical and laboratory parameters in primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome (SS), an acid-loading test was conducted. Subclinical RTA was found in 32% of patients with SS. The prevalence of subclinical RTA in primary and secondary SS was about the same (31.6% and 33.3%, respectively). Significant longer duration of illness, more severely decreased salivary excretion, decreased lymphocyte number, higher serum levels of IgG and IgA, and higher frequency of anti-SS-A (Ro) and SS-B (La) antibodies were found in patients with subclinical RTA. These results suggested that subclinical RTA may be a characteristic manifestation both in primary and secondary SS, along with the progression of immunologic dysfunction, when the illness seemed to be indolent. We studied isotype-specific rheumatoid factors (RFs) to clarify their significance in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to verify the difference in RF isotypes between RA and chronic liver diseases (CLD). Isotype-specific RFs in RA and in CLD were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Most sera ( n = 51, 94.1%) from RA patients contained some kind of RF isotypes (92.1% for IgM RF, 76.4% for IgG RF, and 43.1% for IgA RF), and seronegative RA by ELISA was seen in only 11.8% ( n = 6). The most characteristic combination of RF isotypes in active RA was IgG, IgA, and IgM. This combination of RF isotypes changed to IgG plus IgM, according to the diminution of RA activity; then, we found only IgM RF in inactive RA. The titers of each RF isotype also decreased in parallel with the activity of RA. IgA RF seemed to be the most sensitive factor for evaluating the activity of RA. In CLD, almost the same high frequency ( n = 49, 89.8% for IgM RF, 59.2% for IgG RF), with the same titer levels seen in RA, was observed. On the other hand, IgA RF was significantly lower in frequency ( n = 9, 18.4%) and in titer, compared with the finding in RA. Surprisingly, even in CLD, true seronegativity by ELISA was also found in very few patients ( n = 4, 8.1%). In CLD, positive RFs detected by agglutination assay were seen more often in chronic hepatitis than in liver cirrhosis. In RA patients, significant associations of IgA RF and the serum concentration of IgA, and IgG RF and the serum concentration of IgG, were observed. On the other hand, in CLD patients, significant associations of IgG RF and the serum IgG concentration, and of IgM RF and the serum IgM concentration, were observed. These results indicated that IgA RF in active RA is the most characteristic RF isotype distinguishing it from other nonrheumatic diseases, as well as from inactive RA. RF isotypes reflected the background polyclonal B-cell activation in different manners in both diseases. The psychiatric and cognitive condition of a patient with lupus psychosis was evaluated. Using a device that detects the corneal reflection of infrared light, the patterns of eye tracking movements were recorded before the onset of lupus psychosis, after remission, and again 1 year later. Electroencephalographic findings and cerebrospinal fluid levels of both interferon α and interleukin-6 were also obtained longitudinally. Electroencephalographic findings and clinical signs were correlated to the levels of interferon α in cerebrospinal fluid. Analysis of exploratory eye movements revealed marked decreases in the number of eye fixations, mean eye-scanning length and total eye-scanning length. Even though the lupus psychosis resolved and the electroencephalographic findings became normal, the eye movement patterns showed remaining deterioration. It was concluded that analysis of exploratory eye movements in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus may be useful in diagnosing lupus psychosis, and may also present a diagnostic clue to subclinical lupus psychosis.
