Reference is made to parodontal surgery techniques employing lateral sliding flaps mucogingival for the treatment of gingival schisis. Grupe & Warren (1965) proposed the use of a flap from the parts contiguous to that affected by the schisis. The technique was then developed by the introduction of bipapillar flaps and a flap taken from a toothless saddle. All operations using sliding flaps form part of the most difficult area in mucogingival surgery, due to difficulty of securing the "taking" of the flap on the root cement of the parts affected by schisis.

The possible treatment of periodontal infrabone defects is examined in the light of current developments. The possibility of using alloplastic grafts to create new periodontal structures is discussed in particular detail.

The clinical and histological aspects of hypertrophic and hyperplastic gum diseases were examined in order to clarify the aetiopathogenesis of such conditions and facilitate their diagnosis. The latter is far from simple, given the variety of pathological pictures expressing a large number of conditions that present macroscopic similarities despite their different aetiopathogenesis.

In contrast to benign tumors, malignant tumors, by definition, are characterized by the potential of giving rise to metastases. Albeit infrequently, skin metastases do occur, and their clinical appearance varies over a wide morphologic spectrum. We present the case of a 65-year-old male with zosteriform metastasis secondary to bronchogenic adenocarcinoma. A review of cutaneous metastasis is presented with emphasis on dermatomal distribution and possible mechanisms of dissemination.

After a description of advantages and disadvantages of traditional surgical techniques for the correction of gingival retractions, a new surgical techniques is indicated: the subepithelial connective tissue graft. The latter technique is assessed and described in detail and its relative efficacy in comparison with the traditional techniques is emphasized.

The possible ways of diagnosis periodontal disease are examined in the light of what is reported in the literature. Particular stress is laid on the importance of the diagnosis of diseases "activity", a condition that is indispensable for the implementation of correct periodontal therapy.

The kinetics of the aggregatin of deoxyhemoglobin S in concentrated phosphate buffer were studied turbidimetrically in the presence of organic phosphates. The addition of inositol hexsphosphate shortened the delay time by 35-80%, the range depending on the hemoglobin concentration. The logarithmic plot of delay time versus hemoglobin concentration in 1.85 M potassium phosphate buffer, pH 7.34, showed a linear relationship with a slope (n value) of 2.5 +/- 0.14 in the absence of inositol hexaphosphate, while the slope was decreased to 2.1 in the presence of inositol hexaphosphate. The turbidity (A700) of aggregates per g deoxy Hb S was found to be lower in the presence of inositol hexaphosphate than in the absence of inositol hexaphosphate. The solubility of deoxy Hb S was decreased by inositol hexaphosphate. 2,3-Diphosphoglyceric acid also showed an effect similar to that of inositol hexaphosphate. However, if the pentacyclohexylammonium salt of diphosphoglyceric acid were used, the delay time was increased significantly. The opposite effect of the pentacyclohexylammonium salt of diphosphoglyceric acid on the delay time was found to be attributed to the anti-gelation effect of the pentacyclohexoxylammonium ion. The difference in the effect of inositol hexaphosphate and diphosphoglyceric acid on the delay time appears to be related to their effect on the solubility of deoxy Hb S.
