Abstract

We investigate the discretization of Darcy flow through fractured porous media on general polyhedral meshes. We consider a hybrid-dimensional model, invoking a complex network of planar fractures. The model accounts for matrix-fracture interactions and fractures acting either as drains or as barriers, i.e., we have to deal with pressure discontinuities at matrix-fracture interfaces. The numerical analysis is performed in the general framework of gradient discretizations which is extended to the model under consideration. Two families of schemes, namely the vertex approximate gradient scheme and the hybrid finite volume scheme, are detailed and shown to fit the gradient scheme framework, which yields, in particular, convergence. Abstract

Many tensile tests have been realized on the 16MnNiMo5 bainitic pressure vessel steel at low temperatures [-196°C, -60°C]. The damaging processes (ductile/fragile) are observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), while X-ray diffraction (XRD) is used to determine the internal/residual stresses within the ferritic phase during loading (in-situ) and after unloading: stress states are lower in ferrite than in the bulk material due to cementite particles, the difference never exceeding 150 MPa. A polycrystalline modelling with a two-level homogenisation is also developed concurrently with the experimental characterization. It correctly reproduces the stress distribution in each phase, the intergranular strain heterogeneity as well as the macroscopic fracture stress and strain in relation to temperature, considering a constant number of grains (7%) reaching an experimentally identified crystallographic criterion of cleavage.; International audience; Many tensile tests have been realized on the 16MnNiMo5 bainitic pressure vessel steel at low temperatures [-196°C, -60°C]. Abstract

Purpose: To determine whether adding bevacizumab, with or without mitomycin, to capecitabine monotherapy improves progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in an open-label, three-arm randomized trial. Patients and Methods: Overall, 471 patients in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom with previously untreated, unresectable mCRC were randomly assigned to the following: capecitabine; capecitabine plus bevacizumab (CB); or capecitabine, bevacizumab, and mitomycin (CBM). We compared CB with capecitabine and CBM with capecitabine for progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary end points included overall survival (OS), toxicity, response rate (RR), and quality of life (QOL). Result(s): Median PFS was 5.7 months for capecitabine, 8.5 months for CB, and 8.4 months for CBM (capecitabine v CB: hazard ratio [HR], 0.63; 95% CI, 0.50 to 0.79; P < .001; C v CBM: HR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.47 to 0.75; P < .001). After a median follow-up of 31 months, median OS was 18.9 months for capecitabine and was 16.4 months for CBM; these data were not significantly different. Toxicity rates were acceptable, and all treatment regimens well tolerated. Bevacizumab toxicities were similar to those in previous studies. Measures of overall QOL were similar in all groups. Conclusion(s): Adding bevacizumab to capecitabine, with or without mitomycin, significantly improves PFS without major additional toxicity or impairment of QOL. Abstract

The gradient scheme family, which includes the conforming and mixed finite elements as well as the mimetic mixed hybrid family, is used for the approximation of Richards equation and the two-phase flow problem in heterogeneous porous media. We prove the convergence of the approximate saturation and of the approximate pressures and approximate pressure gradients thanks to monotony and compactness arguments under an assumption of non-degeneracy of the phase relative permeabilities. Strong convergence results stem from the convergence of the norms of the gradients of pressures, which demand handling the nonlinear time term. Numerical results show the efficiency on these problems of a particular gradient scheme, called the Vertex Approximate Gradient scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
