We have studied solar variations during the Holocene (i.e., last similar to 11,700 yr) by combining a new model of the Earth's dipole moment with C-14 data from the IntCal04 record and 10 Be data from the GRIP ice core. Joint spectral analysis of the two nuclide records suggests that the periodic behavior of the Sun was particularly pronounced between 6000-4500 yr BP and 3000-2000 yr BP, with dominating periodicities of similar to 88, similar to 150, similar to 220, and similar to 400 years, while this rhythmic behavior faded during other time intervals. The fact that the two reconstructions, based on radionuclides with distinct geochemical properties, agree with respect to both the frequency and timing of the periodic behavior, strongly suggests that they reflect the actual behavior of the Sun. Subtle but systematic differences between the amplitude spectra may point to an interplay between the climate system and the similar to 220- and similar to 400-year solar cycles during intervals when these were particularly prominent. More than 1000 prominent representatives from science, industry, politics and NGOs were gathered in Aarhus on 5–7 March 2009 for the international climate conference 'Beyond Kyoto: Addressing the Challenges of Climate Change'. Thematically, Beyond Kyoto was divided into seven areas of particular interest for understanding the effects of the projected future climate change and how the foreseen negative impacts can be counteracted by mitigation and adaptation measures. The themes were: Climate policy: the role of law and economics; Biodiversity and ecosystems; Agriculture and climate change; Nanotechnology solutions for a sustainable future; Citizens and society, and The Arctic. The main responsible scientists for the seven conference themes and representatives from the think-tank CONCITO delivered 'The 7 Aarhus Statements on Climate Change' as part of the closing session of the conference. The statements were also communicated to the Danish Government as well as to the press. This article is the product of the collective subsequent work of the seven theme responsibles and is a presentation of each theme statement in detail, emphasizing the current state of knowledge and how it may be used to minimize the expected negative impacts of future climate change. The North Atlantic cooling event at 8200 calibrated (cal) yr BP has been attributed to effects of an extensive freshwater discharge from the Hudson Strait (Barber et al., 1999; Leverington et al., 2002). Here we present sedimentary records from 5 cores collected from the Greenland shelf. These document high magnetic susceptibility (MS) values related to massive silt deposition, which is ascribed to large-scale melt water outflow from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) spanning the centuries before 8200 cal yr BP and ending after 8000 cal yr BP. XRF trace element composition and foraminiferal fauna's provide additional evidence for excessive melt-water production, which can be related to early Holocene warming of the circum-Arctic region including Greenland. Planktonic foraminiferal fauna data from the southern Davis Strait indicate the widespread presence of negative salinity anomalies reaching far offshore Greenland. Significant freshening of surface waters around Greenland prior to 8200 cal yr BP must have led to a slowdown of the deep-water formation which thus implies that significant melting of the GIS should be taken into account when discussing driving mechanisms behind the 8200 cal yr BP cooling event.

Quaternary glacial stratigraphy and relative sea-level changes reveal at least two glacial expansions over the Chelyuskin Peninsula, bordering the Kara Sea at about 77°N in the Russian Arctic, as indicated from tills interbedded with marine sediments, exposed in stratigraphic superposition, and from raisedbeach sequences mapped to altitudes of at least up to ca. 80 m a.s.l. Chronological control is provided by accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dating, electron-spin resonance and optically stimulated luminescence geochronology. Major glaciations, followed by deglaciation and marine inundation, occurred during marine oxygen isotope stages 6–5e (MIS 6–5e) and stages MIS 5d–5c. These glacial sediments overlie marine sediments of Pliocene age, which are draped by fluvial sediment of a pre-Saalian age, thereby forming palaeovalley/ basin fills in the post-Cretaceous topography. Till fabrics and glacial tectonics record expansions of local ice caps exclusively, suggesting wet-based ice cap advance, followed by cold-based regional ice-sheet expansion. Local ice caps over highland sites along the perimeter of the shallow Kara Sea, including the Byrranga Mountains and the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, appear to have repeatedly fostered initiation of a large Kara Sea ice sheet, with the exception of the Last Glacial Maximum (MIS 2), when Kara Sea ice neither impacted the Chelyuskin Peninsula nor Severnaya Zemlya, and barely touched the northern coastal areas of the Taymyr Peninsula.

A multiproxy study of palaeoceanographic and climatic changes in northernmost Baffin Bay shows that major environmental changes have occurred since the deglaciation of the area at about 12 500 cal. yr BP. The interpretation is based on sedimentology, benthic and planktonic foraminifera and their isotopic composition, as well as diatom assemblages in the sedimentary records at two core sites, one located in the deeper central part of northernmost Baffin Bay and one in a separate trough closer to the Greenland coast. A revised chronology for the two records is established on the basis of 15 previously published AMS 14C age determinations. A basal diamicton is overlain by laminated, fossil-free sediments. Our data from the early part of the fossiliferous record (12 300–11 300 cal. yr BP), which is also initially laminated, indicate extensive seasonal sea-ice cover and brine release. There is indication of a cooling event between 11 300 and 10 900 cal. yr BP, and maximum Atlantic Water influence occurred between 10 900 and 8200 cal. yr BP (no sediment recovery between 8200 and 7300 cal. yr BP). A gradual, but fluctuating, increase in sea-ice cover is seen after 7300 cal. yr BP. Sea-ice diatoms were particularly abundant in the central part of northernmost Baffin Bay, presumably due to the inflow of Polar waters from the Arctic Ocean, and less sea ice occurred at the near-coastal site, which was under continuous influence of the West Greenland Current. Our data from the deep, central part show a fluctuating degree of upwelling after c. 7300 cal. yr BP, culminating between 4000 and 3050 cal. yr BP. There was a gradual increase in the influence of cold bottom waters from the Arctic Ocean after about 3050 cal. yr BP, when agglutinated foraminifera became abundant. A superimposed short-term change in the sea-surface proxies is correlated with the Little Ice Age cooling.

Marine sediments from river sections in the Mezen River drainage, northwest Russia, have been analysed for dinoflagellate cysts, foraminifers and molluscs. The sediments were dated by pollen analysis and by reference to the local sea-level history, and are Late Saalian to late Eemian (c. 133 to 119.5 kyr in age). The Late Saalian deglaciation was characterized by Arctic conditions, but a few centuries into the Eemian the Gulf Stream system carried warm Atlantic water into the region. At 129.8 kyr BP there was a marked increase in the influx of Atlantic water, and the advection of warm Atlantic water was stronger and probably penetrated further eastwards than at present. The molluscs, dinoflagellate cysts and foraminifers reflect conditions warmer than present and that the optimum temperature occurred at the time of the early Eemian global sea-level rise. Around 128 kyr BP, the eustatic sea-level rise was curbed by isostatic rebound and accompanying regression and constriction of marine passages to the White Sea. Local, low-saline, stratified basins developed and characterized the next five to six millennia.

Sedimentological and geochemical (XRF) data together with information from diatom and benthic foraminifera records of a 3.5 m long gravity core from Ameralik fjord, southern West Greenland, is used for reconstructing late Holocene environmental changes in this area. The changes are linked to large-scale North Atlantic ocean and climate variability. AMS 14C-dating of benthic foraminifera indicates that the sediment core covers the last 4400 years and may include the termination of the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM). The late HTM (4.4-3.2 ka BP) is characterized by high accumulation rates of fine (silty) sediments related to strong melt-water discharge from the Inland Ice. The benthic foraminiferal fauna demonstrates the presence of well-ventilated, saline bottom water originating from inflow of subsurface West Greenland Current water of Atlantic (Irminger Sea) origin. The hydrographic conditions were further characterised by limited sea ice probably related to a mild and relatively windy winter climate. After 3.2 ka BP lower fine-grained sedimentation rates, but a larger input from sea-ice rafted or aeolian coarse material prevailed. This can be related to colder atmospheric conditions with a decreased meltwater discharge and more widespread sea-ice cover in the fjord.

Diatom proxies from the modern position of the oceanographic Polar Front north of Iceland record variability in sea-surface temperatures during the past two millennia. The sedimentary record is dated with tephrochronology, alleviating marine 14C reservoir age uncertainties. Comparison of changes in sea-surface temperatures (SST) on the North Icelandic Shelf with variations in the atmospheric circulation above Greenland, North American Atlantic coastal sea-surface temperatures, and mean temperature anomalies for the Northern Hemisphere suggests synchronous North Atlantic–wide fluctuations, which would seem to imply a common forcing factor. A positive and significant correlation between our SST record from the North Icelandic Shelf and reconstructed solar irradiance, together with modeling results, supports the hypothesis that solar forcing is an important constituent of natural climate variability in the northern North Atlantic region.

Before the catastrophic eruption around 1640 BC, Theera, Therasia and Aspronisi formed a ring-shaped island with a sea flooded caldera in the middle. The so-called Pre-Kameni Island was situated in the centre of the caldera. This reconstruction is based on the study of stromatolites found in eruption products as well as other geological observations. The location of pre-eruption settlements or sites on the present rim of the Santorini caldera seems to support this reconstruction. Many of the rocks and minerals used in the Bronze Age culture are of local origin. Foraminiferal and mineralogical studies enable us to trace the source areas of a clay deposit found in a grave chamber in the Akrotiri excavation. This clay can be used for pottery making. The foraminiferal and mineralogical studies also help identify the natural drainage system and thus the freshwater supply, which may have been an important factor deciding the location of the Bronze Age settlement.

Benthic foraminifera and stable isotope data from the last interglaciation (Eemian, substage 5e) from a borehole at Skagen, Denmark, provide evidence for major environmental and hydrographic changes during this period. During the first millennium of the Eemian, water masses covering northern Denmark became gradually warmer. Temperate conditions prevailed during most of the interglaciation, but these were interrupted by two periods with decreased water temperatures. The first cooling (Event S-1) was not very distinct at Skagen, but the second (Event S-2), seen in both the foraminiferal and oxygen isotope record, represents a large shift to subarctic conditions. Carbon isotopes indicate a change in ocean circulation during both events. No comparable climate variations are seen within the Holocene record at the site. The final cooling of the water masses associated with the substage 5e/5d boundary occurred within a few hundred years. These last interglacial climatic changes were probably caused by variations in strength and/or position of the North Atlantic Drift, possibly as a result of varying vigor of the Atlantic conveyor. In addition, minor variations in the fossil assemblages also indicate fluctuations in the inflow of Atlantic water to the Skagerrak–Kattegat area during the warm intervals of substage 5e.

Benthic foraminiferal and stable isotope studies of two borings from the island of Anholt, Denmark, reveal a continuous Late Saalian-Eemian sequence with an overall gradual warming interrupted by a short term temperature deterioration comparable with the Younger Dryas cold spell. The sequence is correlated to the global deep sea stable isotope record based on environmental evidence given by foraminiferal faunas and stable isotopes. The following environmental changes in the Anholt cores can be attributed to the global variations: 1. (1) An interstadial phase, the “Flakket Interstadial”, which had a duration of about 1000 years, is correlated to stable isotope event 6.01. 2. (2) The following cold spell, the “Kattegat Stadial”, spanning about 1000 years, represents most of the interval between isotope events 6.01 and 6.0. 3. (3) A phase of rapid warming within about 1000 years bsotope events 6.0 and 5.53. 4. (4) A sea level change within the Eemian between isotope events 5.53 and 5.51.

The Quaternary sequence of a boring from the island of Anholt, Denmark, comprises both marine and non-marine sediments spanning a time interval from the Holocene to at least as far back as the Saalian. The oldest Quaternary sediments consist of a till and a glaciofluvial sand sequence. These are overlain by marine silty clays of Saalian to Eemian age. An interstadial (Flakket Interstadial) and a stadial (Kattegat Stadial) are identified in the late Saalian. This climatic fluctuation has been compared to the Allerod and Younger Dryas events at the Weichselian–Holocene transition. The Eemian sediments are followed by sand and non-marine, varved clay overlain by 2 m of marine clay, which is correlated with the Middle Weichselian of the Skaerumhede series. The marine clay is covered by silty clay and a thick sand sequence of non-marine origin. The uppermost 2 m sediments may represent the Holocene coastal accretion on Anholt.

The stratigraphic record from a boring penetrating the 104 m thick Quaternary sequence on the island of Anholt is summarized. The spatial distribution of the pre-Quaternary formations and the surface topography of these are described on the basis of reflection seismic profiles. It is concluded that Anholt is located in the crestal zone of a southeast–northwest trending anticline in the pre-Quaternary. The anticline was formed during the Late Cretaceous–Early Tertiary inversion episodes and was later deeply truncated by erosion. A southeast–northwest trending erosional channel, c. 2 km wide and with a maximum depth c. 250 m below sea level, is located southeast of Anholt along the crest of the anticline. This channel is not present at the bore locality. Although no direct correlation from the boring to the seismic profiles could be achieved it is argued that a strong reflection near the base of the Quaternary outside the channel may be correlated with the Saalian–Eemian complex found in the boring. Three younger sequences of probable Early and Middle Weichselian, Late Glacial and Holocene age respectively have been recognized. The Late Glacial and Holocene sediments appear to have been deposited in erosional troughs and channels cut into a sequence of Lower and Middle Weichselian sediments. Post-Eemian till deposits or other evidence unambiguously indicating the presence of Weichselian glaciers have not been found, either in the boring or in the seismic profiles. It is therefore assumed that the erosion of the Lower-Middle Weichselian sequence was of fluvial origin and can be ascribed to the lowstand period of the Weichselian glacial period. The western part of Anholt can possibly be regarded as an erosional remnant of the Lower-Middle Weichselian sequence.

Variations in climate over the last approx. 2000 years and a contrast in the winter climate regime of NW Europe and West Greenland may be ascribed to variations in the teleconnection pattern expressed by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This well-known climate phenomenon is, among others, reflected in an increased inflow of warm Atlantic Water into the Labrador Sea under conditions of a colder European winter regime (negative NAO indices). Cooling of the Labrador Sea appears to have been a feature typical for a milder European winter climate (positive NAO indices). This pattern is seen both on shorter, (sub)decadal timescales of the last approx. 60 years and on a longer, centennial timescale through the last millennia. During a significant part of the 20th century warming, episodes of milder winters in Europe may be related to Atlantic patterns of natural climate variability similarly as recorded in the past millennia. However, records for recent decades (since the mid 1980s) show a different pattern indicating a significant change in North Atlantic ocean- and atmospheric circulations. This seemingly changed behaviour of the climate system corresponds in timing to the episode of the most extensive global temperature increase, suggesting an increasing anthropogenic effect on the climate development of the past ca. 20 years.

Morphologically similar benthic foraminiferal taxa can be difficult to separate. Aside from causing issues in taxonomy, incorrect identifications complicate our understanding of species-specific ecological preferences and result in flawed palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and geochemical results. Over the years, a number of studies have grouped together several key Arctic–North Atlantic species in various combinations, despite their distinct environmental preferences and/or stratigraphical differences, causing great confusion in the literature. These species include Cassidulina laevigata, Cassidulina neoteretis, Cassidulina teretis, Paracassidulina neocarinata, Islandiella helenae, and Islandiella norcrossi. Here, we provide for the first time a detailed comparison of these taxa. We present a compilation of the original species descriptions, along with clear, illustrated guidelines on how to separate these taxa to circumvent taxonomic confusion. We acknowledge that some features cannot easily be seen with a standard low-powered microscope, especially if specimens are not well preserved. In those cases, we recommend the following actions: (i) always strive to make a precise identification and at least differentiate between the three genera; (ii) where C. neoteretis and C. teretis cannot be separated, and where the stratigraphical context does not make the species identification obvious, specimens belonging to these taxa should be reported as C. teretis/C. neoteretis; and (iii) where specimens in a sample cannot be confidently assigned to a specific species of Islandiella or Cassidulina, specimens should be grouped as Islandiella spp. or Cassidulina spp., followed by naming the most dominant species in brackets. The improved identification of Cassidulina, Paracassidulina, and Islandiella specimens will ensure development of a better understanding of the ecological affinities of these key Arctic–North Atlantic taxa, consequently resulting in more accurate palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and geochemical data.

The marine Eemian (marine oxygen-isotope substage 5e: MIS 5e) is represented by shallow-water deposits in southern and western Denmark, while relatively deep-water environments occurred to the north and north-east, where complete interglacial successions seem to be present. We present an overview of the marine Eemian deposits in Denmark, and discuss in more detail indications of climate variability, both for the late Saalian and within the Eemian.

Data from the Greenland ice sheet and continental records from Europe have indicated climatic fluctuations during the last interglacial (Eemian: Oxygen Isotope Substage 5e). Similar fluctuations have not, however, been documented previously from marine environments. Here, we show the existence of two cold events during substage 5e in two marine, benthic foraminiferal, shelf records from northwest Europe and suggest that these cooling events are a result of fluctuations in the strength of the North Atlantic surface-water circulation.

Foraminifera from surface samples in the Kattegat and the Skagerrak, northwestern Europe, have been analysed to determine the modern foraminiferal distribution. A total of five foraminiferal assemblages are distinguished. These are the Elphidium excavatum, Cassidulina laevigata, Bulimina marginata, Cibicides lobatulus and Trochammina sp. assemblages. Only the first three are found over large areas and these are correlated to either depth, organic carbon content or grain size. At each station a short core was studied to determine whether changes have occurred in the assemblages during the last few hundred years. In some areas no such variations were found, but several of the cores from the Skagerrak and all cores from the Kattegat document changes within this period. The fluctuations in the Skagerrak may be attributed to natural causes, such as species migrations or re-deposition. In the Kattegat a change from a Hyalinea balthica assemblage to the modern B. marginata assemblage always occurs at approximately the same core depth, which presumably represents the biological mixing depth. This change is presumably due to anthropogenic influences, which have caused oxygen depletion in the bottom waters of the Kattegat during the last few decades.
