Se estimó la composición química, tasa y degradabilidad de la PC, energía metabolizable (EM) y proteína metabolizable (PM) de arbóreas (2), arbustivas (11), herbáceas (4), cactáceas (3), flores, frutos y vainas (8) que consumen los pequeños rumiantes en agostadero. La composición química se determinó por métodos estándar, la EM a partir de la producción de gas in vitro y la degradabilidad de la PC in situ. Los datos se sometieron a análisis de varianza para un diseño completamente al azar y se correlacionó la composición química con la degradabilidad de la PC. Los contenidos en FND (65, 41, 46, 43 y 37 % MS, respectivamente), lignina (10, 8, 12, 2 y 7 % MS), hemicelulosa (32, 18, 13, 30 y 10 % MS), celulosa (22, 16, 21, 11 y 20 % MS), EM (4.6, 6.6, 8.5, 7.3 y 7.8 MJ/kg MS), PM (4.9, 7.7, 7.3, 2.9 y 4.5 % MS), así como la tasa constante de degradación c de la PC (4.0 % h-1, 6.4, 4.4, 3.7, 8.7) y la degradabilidad efectiva de la PC (28, 55, 62, 77 y 76 %) fueron diferentes en cada grupo de plantas. Se concluye que el valor nutricional (EM y PM) de arbustivas y herbáceas es alto y las cactáceas y frutos en EM. La tasa constante de degradación c de la PC de frutos, arbustivas y herbáceas les confiere buen potencial nutritivo para pequeños rumiantes en agostadero. Por el contrario, la degradabilidad efectiva de la PC permite clasificar a las arbóreas estudiadas como especies de mediana calidad.

Mesenchymal stem cells have the potential to differentiate into several types of cells including osteoblasts. These stem cells have cell surface markers found on cells of endothelial and subendothelial origin of the umbilical cord vein. Taking this into consideration we have postulated that human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) could present osteogenic differentiation as well. Gene activation that could drive osteogenic differentiation is regulated by exogenous and endogenous factors.The induction osteogenesis in HUVEC.We used: a) an osteogenic medium containing 0.1 microM dexamethasone, 10 microM beta-glycerophosphate, 50 microM L-ascorbic-acid 2-phosphate, 20% MCGS serum; and b) a treatment with DNA demethylating agents hydralazine and 5'-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (0.39-200 microM). Phenotypic characteristics of HUVEC were their spindle and stellate shapes with fine homogenous cytoplasm, typically associated with fibroblast-like cells.The control cells (without osteogenic treatment) exhibited little extracellular matrix, whereas the osteogenically treated cells appeared shortened and flattened, and they were surrounded by extracellular matrix that subsequently became mineralized in vitro. After 28 days in culture, morphologic and histochemical studies confirmed that osteogenic medium had a strong stimulatory effect on the alkaline phosphatase activity of endothelial cells, a very early marker of cell differentiation into the osteogenic lineage. Hydralazine and 5'-aza-2'-deoxycytidine, two drugs utilized in chromatin remodeling leading to gene re-expression of inactivated DNA hypermethylated islands, did not favor osteoblast differentiation.Our study shows that HUVEC can differentiate along an osteogenic lineage and thus provide an alternative source for cell-based therapies and tissue engineering strategies.

The transformation of knowledge and technology originated from higher education institutions (HEIs) into valuable economic activity have become a high priority in many policy agendas across the world. Giving data limitations, especially in post-socialist economies, a few studies have investigated the resource base and capabilities that are required in these processes. The aim of this paper is to explore the moderation influence of HEIs origins on the HEI-level factors that condition the knowledge transfer and commercialisation. Adopting the resource-based theory, we test a model with 41 Belarusian HEIs for a three-year period. Our findings reveal that, in the current economic situation, post-1991 HEIs do not substantially differ in terms of transforming financial resources into commercial outputs, while the knowledge creation capability is appeared to be a significant predictor of the success in knowledge transfer and commercialisation only in the case of these HEIs.

This paper analyses the support mechanisms for entrepreneurship and innovation provided by entrepreneurial universities. Concretely, using a qualitative methodology the case of Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain is studied. Based on institutional economics approach, the influences of institutions on university potential entrepreneurs (students and faculty) are explored. The main results demonstrate that the success of these mechanisms could be the combination of them according with the specific necessities and requirements of the university. Both, academic and practical implications derive from these results, to improve the creation and development of entrepreneurial universities.

The effect of intrathecal administration of antiepileptic drugs on electroshock-induced convulsions (maximal electroshock seizure, MES test) was investigated in an experimental study in rats. Drugs tested were phenobarbital sodium (50-800 micrograms), sodium valproate (50-6,400 micrograms) and midazolam (50-250 micrograms), delivered into the cerebrospinal fluid via a catheter placed in the upper cervical intrathecal space. Control animals were tested with saline. The animals were tested in the MES test 30 min after drug administration. Phenobarbital sodium showed a dose-related protective effect on the tonic phase of the convulsion, with a 50% effect at a dose of 200 micrograms. Sodium valproate showed a less protective effect, even when reaching doses that produced neurological symptoms. Midazolam protected at a high dose but produced a severe decrease in motor activity. The results indicate the feasibility to treat experimental convulsions by means of intrathecal injection of antiepileptic drugs.

The objective of the study was to quantify differences in nutritive value, over four seasons, of native grasses such as Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua trifida, Brachiaria fasciculata, Chloris ciliata, Digitaria insularis, Leptochloa filiformis, Panicum hallii, Panicum obtusum, Paspalum unispicatum, Setaria grisebachii, Setaria macrostachya, Tridens eragrostoides, Tridens muticus and naturalized Cenchrus ciliaris and Rhynchelytrum repens that are used as forages for grazing beef cattle. Cenchrus ciliaris was included as a reference grass of good nutritional quality. Plants were collected in autumn 2001 and in winter, spring and summer 2002. The nutritive value was assessed in terms of nutrient content, effective rumen degradable dry matter (EDDM), metabolizable energy (ME) and metabolizable protein (MP). Most grasses had crude protein (CP) content comparable to the reference C. ciliaris grass (grand mean = 120 g/kg) and some of them had a higher content (140 g/kg). Se estimó la producción de biomasa y el valor nutricional de forraje verde hidropónico (FVH) de trigo y avena. Se determinó la composición química (MS, PC, EE, FDN, FDA, celulosa, hemicelulosa, lignina), producción de gas in vitro, energía metabolizable (EM), degradabilidad in situ de MS y PC, digestibilidad verdadera in vitro de MO y proteína metabolizable (PM). Los datos se sometieron a análisis de varianza para un diseño factorial 3×2×2 (tres densidades de siembra, dos especies y dos fechas de cosecha). Las medias se separaron con la prueba de Tukey. Promedios generales de las variables evaluadas en ambas especies, como producción de biomasa (13,0kg FVH/m2), contenido de proteína (15,6%, base MS), producción de gas a partir de la fracción lentamente fermentable b (57ml/200mg MS), tasa constante de producción de gas c (5,8%/h), contenido de EM (2,5Mcalkg1 MS) y contenido de proteína metabolizable (73gkg1 MS), indican alta disponibilidad de nutrientes y energía. Valores más altos de digestibilidad verdadera de la MO in vitro (78%) y de energía metabolizable (2,7Mcal EM/kg MS) del FVH de trigo respecto al de avena (72,8% DVIVMO y 2,2Mcal EM/kg MS, respectivamente) pueden servir para definir la forma de utilizar el FVH de ambas especies en sistemas de alimentación de rumiantes. El costo de producción del FVH de trigo (2,29 pesos mexicanos/kg MS) es 82% del costo de 1kg de semilla de trigo original, lo cual reduce el costo de alimentación de rumiantes. Las variables nutricionales evaluadas indican que el FVH ofrece buena calidad nutritiva para rumiantes.
