Abstract

O objetivo central deste trabalho é o de relatar algumas análises de pesquisa sobre as condições que alunos concluintes de cursos de formação de professores exibem para atuar nos anos iniciais da escolaridade. realizado na perspectiva dos estudos culturais, o estudo permite traçar o perfil desse alunado na dimensão específica do domínio da recepção e produção do texto escrito. Os dados referem-se a alunos concluintes de um Curso Normal Superior privado, de instituição do interior paulista, em 2005. Com o aporte da sociologia procura-se compreender criticamente esse modelo de formação atual, analisando-o a partir de dentro das instituições formadoras e de seus agentes. Os resultados apontam a precariedade das condições de domínio dos conteúdos escolares básicos relacionados à leitura e à escrita, indispensáveis para o exercício futuro da profissão docente nos primeiros anos do ensino fundamental, o que equivale a constatar, nessa parcela do alunado do ensino superior, indícios de falência do sistema escolar de ensino.The main purpose of this work is to report some research analyses on the lack of preparation shown by last-year students of teachers' training course to exercise their work in the first years of schooling. Conducted from the cultural study perspective, this study enables identifying the profile of these students in the specific dimension of a written text reception and production domain. Data refer to students attending the last year of a private higher basic education teacher education program, in an institution located in a city in the State of Sao Paulo, in 2005. With Sociology contributions, this study tries to critically understand this present education model, analyzing it from inside the educational institutions and their agents. Results point out deficiencies in mastering basic school contents such as reading and writing, indispensable for the future practice of teaching first graders of primary school. This is equivalent to noticing traces of failure of the teaching school system in these higher education students.

Abstract

Vegetable soybean (VS), known as edamame, is appreciated for its robust flavor and exceptional nutrient content. Although the United States is one of the world's leading producers of soy, only a fraction is harvested as edamame. Research involving varietal differences is very limited, particularly among U.S. consumers. Sensory attributes of three VS varieties grown in Northern California (with organic methods) were assessed: Giant Midori (GM), ButterBean (BB), and Kuroshinja (KU). Participants (n = 74) rated four characteristics: flavor, texture, appearance, and overall liking on unlabeled, 11-point hedonic scales and were asked if they would purchase the variety. A small portion of these participants would again evaluate the varieties, using free choice profiling (FCP) methodology. After these evaluations, texture analyzer, colorimeter, and high-performance liquid chromatography (free amino acids, sugars, and isoflavones) testing were performed. Among tested varieties, distinct differences in quality were found, with GM preferred first, followed by KU, and BB. GM was significantly harder, a more intense green, had more free sugars and isoflavones and fewer free amino acids, whereas KU and BB trended to be the opposite. Analyzing FCP data with a General Procrustes Analysis, varieties were separated in different factors for flavor and texture, but not appearance. Although repeated, and larger trials are needed, our study signifies that consumers are able to detect differences among VS varieties. Further research may influence producers to grow the variety likely to be most profitable and marketable.

Abstract

AIMS: Assessment of microvascular function in patients with ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) may be useful to determine treatment strategy. The possible role of pressure-bounded coronary flow reserve (pb-CFR) in this setting has not been determined. In this study we aimed to compare pb-CFR with thermodilution-derived physiology including the index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) and CFR(thermo) in a consecutive series of patients enrolled in the OxAMI study. Moreover, we aimed to assess the presence of microvascular obstruction (MVO) and myocardial injury on cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging performed at 48 hours and six months in STEMI patients stratified according to pb-CFR. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thermodilution-pressure-wire assessment of the infarct-related artery was performed in 148 STEMI patients before stenting and/or at completion of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). The extent of the myocardial injury was assessed with CMR imaging at 48 hours and six months after STEMI. Post-PPCI pb-CFR was impaired (2) in 69.9% and 9.0% of the cases, respectively. In the remaining 21.1% of the patients, pb-CFR was “indeterminate”. In this cohort, pb-CFR correlated poorly with thermodilution-derived coronary flow reserve (k=0.03, p=0.39). The IMR was significantly different across the pb-CFR subgroups. Similarly, significant differences were observed in MVO, myocardium area at risk and 48-hour infarct size (IS). A trend towards lower six-month IS was observed in patients with high (>2) post-PPCI pb-CFR. Nevertheless, pb-CFR was inferior to IMR in predicting MVO and the extent of IS. CONCLUSIONS: Pb-CFR can identify microvascular dysfunction in patients after STEMI. It provided superior diagnostic performance compared to thermodilution-derived CFR in predicting MVO. However, IMR was superior to both pb-CFR and thermodilution-derived CFR and, consequently, IMR was the most accurate in predicting all of the studied CMR endpoints of myocardial injury after PPCI.

Abstract

Introduction Cardiac MR is widely used to diagnose cardiac amyloid but cannot differentiate AL and ATTR subtypes: an important distinction given their differing treatments and prognoses. We used PET/MR imaging to quantify myocardial uptake of 18F-fluoride in ATTR and AL amyloid patients as well as participants with aortic stenosis and age/sex matched controls (both negative controls). Methods In this prospective multi-centre study, patients were recruited in Edinburgh and New York and underwent 18F-fluoride PET/MR imaging. Standardised volumes of interest were drawn in the septum and areas of late gadolinium enhancement to derive myocardial standardised uptake values (SUV) and tissue to background ratio (TBRMEAN) after correction for blood pool activity in the right atrium. Results 53 patients were scanned. 18 with cardiac amyloid (10 ATTR and 8 AL), 13 controls and 22 with aortic stenosis. No differences in myocardial TBR values were observed between participants scanned in Edinburgh and New York. Mean myocardial TBRMEAN values in ATTR amyloid (1.13±0.16) were significantly higher than controls (0.84±0.11, p=0.0006), aortic stenosis (0.73±0.12, p 1.14 in areas of LGE demonstrated 100% sensitivity (C.I. 72.25 – 100%) and 100% specificity (C.I. 67.56 – 100%) for ATTR compared to AL amyloid (AUC 1, p=0.0004). Conclusion Quantitative 18F-fluoride PET/MR imaging can distinguish ATTR amyloid from other similar phenotypes and holds major promise in improving the diagnosis of this condition and helping to tailor appropriate treatments to those most likely to benefit.

Abstract

ObjectivesThe association between obesity and atrial fibrillation (AF) is well-established. We aimed to evaluate the impact of index body mass index (BMI) on AF recurrence at 12 months following catheter ablation using propensity-weighted analysis. In addition, periprocedural complications and fluoroscopy details were examined to assess overall safety in relationship to increasing BMI ranges.MethodsBaseline, periprocedural and follow-up data were collected on consecutive patients scheduled for AF ablation. There were no specific exclusion criteria. Patients were categorised according to baseline BMI in order to assess the outcomes for each category.ResultsAmong 3333 patients, 728 (21.8%) were classified as normal (BMI 2), 1537 (46.1%) as overweight (BMI 25.5–29.0 kg/m2) and 1068 (32.0%) as obese (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2). Procedural duration and radiation dose were higher for overweight and obese patients compared with those with a normal BMI (p=0.002 and p2led to a 1.2-fold increased likelihood of experiencing recurrent AF at 12-months follow-up as compared with overweight patients (HR 1.223; 95% CI 1.047 to 1.429; p=0.011), while no significant correlation was found between overweight and normal BMI groups (HR 0.954; 95% CI 0.798 to 1.140; p=0.605) and obese versus normal BMI (HR 1.16; 95% CI 0.965 to 1.412; p=0.112).ConclusionsPatients with a baseline BMI ≥30 kg/m2have a higher recurrence rate of AF following catheter ablation and therefore lifestyle modification to target obesity preprocedure should be considered in these patients.
