One of the means for representing quantities/magnitudes is the mental number line. It is still a nonsolved question as to whether the method of learning mathematics in the early years could improve this type of estimating. A total of 233 students, aged four and five years, who learned mathematics with a new method called Open Algorithm Based on Number or the more traditional Closed Based on Ciphers approach, were evaluated with a reliable estimation on the number line test. Results revealed significant differences in participants’ estimation functions based on the learning method used. Students who learned mathematics through the Open Algorithm Based on Number method used a linear representation more efficiently than those who were taught with the Closed Based on Ciphers methodology. This group exhibited a logarithmic function in their approach. We discussed whether these differences can be attributed to a recurrent practice in estimation tasks at school, characterized by the Open Algorithm Based on Number methodology.

Currently, a company’s success not only depends on having the capital, tools, knowledge, and services to offer to a specific audience. It depends mainly on the emotional intelligence of its organizational leaders to achieve harmony in leader-team interpersonal relationships and fulfill its goals and objectives. Therefore, it is pertinent to contribute to this field of research by exploring the environment where these types of human relationships occur. Managerial leaders who apply emotional intelligence strategies make a company’ excellent management visible and viable; these leaders are responsible for influencing others, molding groups as needed. The daily interaction between leader and employees is dynamic, and one way or another arises from following certain types of leadership found within the structure. Nevertheless, we are living in challenging times due to a global pandemic, where new emotions and skills must be managed, particularly by the leader. Any event of this magnitude has its consequences, especially if we talk about a virus that has caused a health crisis and continues to cause the death of thousands of people. These repercussions encompass several areas, such as the economy, health, education, and society. Albert Einstein used to say that the tone of the century is set in its first twenty-five years, so it is essential to build the foundations of a new society marked by new social leadership. The association of OLP with other autoimmune processes points to the possibility that OLP-affected patients are actually developing an autoimmune status that predisposes them to autoaggression against different targets. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the current evidence on the prevalence of autoimmune disorders in patients with OLP and their magnitude of association. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus databases for the studies published before May 2021, with no limitation in regards to their publication date or language. We evaluated the quality of studies, carried out meta-analyses and performed heterogeneity, subgroups, meta-regression, and small-study effects analyses.Inclusion criteria were met by 153 studies (23,327 patients). Our results indicate the existence of high prevalence and a frequent association between OLP and some autoimmune disorders, especially in regards to thyroid disease (PP = 7.96%, 95% CI = 6.32-9.75; OR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.60-2.49, p 0.001) and diabetes mellitus (PP = 9.41%,95% CI = 8.16-10.74; OR = 1.64, 95% CI = 1.34-2.00, p 0.001).Our study demonstrates the existence of a comorbidity between autoimmune thyroid diseases as well as between diabetes mellitus and OLP respectively. Quality of evidence should be upgraded on other autoimmune diseases (fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal disorders, rheumatic diseases, Sjogren's syndrome, lupus erythematosus, and dermatological diseases) for which the current data do not allow us to know whether they are really associated with OLP.

Background. Retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. It is the leading cause of blindness among working-aged people in developed countries. The use of telemedicine in the screening system has enabled the application of large-scale population-based programs for early retinopathy detection in diabetic patients. However, the need to support ophthalmologists with other trained personnel remains a barrier to broadening its implementation. Methods. Automatic diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy was carried out through the analysis of retinal photographs using the 2iRetinex software. We compared the categorical diagnoses of absence/presence of retinopathy issued by family physicians (PCP) with the same categories provided by the algorithm (ALG). The agreed diagnosis of three specialist ophthalmologists is used as the reference standard (OPH). Results. There were 653 of 3520 patients diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Diabetic retinopathy threatening to vision (STDR) was found in 82 patients (2.3%). Diagnostic sensitivity for STDR was 94% (ALG) and 95% (PCP). No patient with proliferating or severe DR was misdiagnosed in both strategies. The k-value of the agreement between the ALG and OPH was 0.5462, while between PCP and OPH was 0.5251 (p = 0.4291). Conclusions. The diagnostic capacity of 2iRetinex operating under normal clinical conditions is comparable to screening physicians.

Snake venoms are rich sources of proteins with potential biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications. Among them, metalloproteases (MPs) and phospholipases A2 (PLA2) are the most abundant. Their isolation involves a multistep chromatographic approach, which has proven to be effective, however implies high operating costs and long processing times. In this study, a cost-effective and simple method based on aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) was developed to recover MPs and PLA2 from Crotalus molossus nigrescens venom. A system with PEG 400 g mol−1, volume ratio (VR) 1, tie line length (TLL) 25% w/w and pH 7 showed the best performance for PLA2 recovery. In systems with PEG 400 g mol−1, VR 1, TLL 15% w/w, pH 7 and 1 and 3% w/w of NaCl, selective recovery of MP subtype P-III was achieved; whereas, in a system with PEG 400 g mol−1, VR 1, TLL 25% w/w and pH 8.5, MP subtypes P-I and P-III were recovered. Due to their low costs, ethanol–salt systems were also evaluated, however, failed to differentially partition PLA2 and MPs. The use of ATPS could contribute to the simplification and cost reduction of protein isolation processes from snake venoms and other toxin fluids, as well as potentially aid their biochemical, proteomic and biological analyses. A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on the model, the combined result excludes a top squark mass up to 1325 GeV for a massless neutralino, and a neutralino mass up to 700 GeV for a top squark mass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV., Comment: Replaced with the published version. Added the journal reference and the DOI. - Abstract
BACKGROUND People with severe mental illness (SMI) face discriminatory situations because of prejudice toward them, even among health care personnel. Escape rooms can be a novel educational strategy for learning about and empathizing with SMI, thus reducing stigma among health care students. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the effect of the Without Memories escape room on nursing students’ stigma against SMI. METHODS A pre- and postintervention study was conducted with a control group and an experimental group. A total of 306 students from 2 Andalusian universities participated in the study. Data were collected through a pre-post study questionnaire, consisting of an adapted version of the Attributional Style Questionnaire and a questionnaire on motivation for cooperative playful learning strategies. The control group carried out an escape room scenario without sensitizing content, whereas the experimental group carried out an escape room scenario on SMI, with both escape rooms being carried out in a 1-hour session of subjects related to mental health. To answer the research questions, a 2-way analysis of variance with repeated measures, a linear regression, and a 2-way analysis of variance were performed. RESULTS After the intervention, a significant reduction (PP>.05) were observed. In contrast, the linear regression (t195=−22.15; PP CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the Without Memories escape room can be used as an effective tool to educate and raise awareness about stigmatizing attitudes toward SMI in university students studying health care. Future testing of the effectiveness of educational escape rooms should be designed with new programs through playful strategies of longer duration to evaluate whether they can achieve a greater impact on motivation, acquisition of knowledge, and awareness. In addition, the feasibility of implementing the Without Memories escape room in other careers related to health and community should be investigated.

Oral cancer is a growing problem, accounting for 377,713 worldwide new cases per year, and 177,757 deaths annually and representing a 5-year mortality rate close to 50%, which is a considerable mortality that has not decreased substantially in the last 40 years. The main cause of this high mortality is related to the diagnosis of a high percentage of oral cancers in advanced stages (stages III and IV) in which treatment is complex, mutilating or disabling, and ineffective. The essential cause of a cancer diagnosis at a late stage is the delay in diagnosis, therefore, the achievement of the objective of improving the prognosis of oral cancer involves reducing the delay in its diagnosis. The reasons for the delay in the diagnosis of oral cancer are complex and involve several actors and circumstances—patients, health care providers, and health services. In this paper, we present the results of a scoping review of systematic reviews on the diagnostic delay in oral cancer with the aim to better understand, based on the evidence, and discuss in depth, the reasons for this fact, and to identify evidence gaps and formulate strategies for improvement.

- Abstract

Background and aim Natural disasters cause mental disorders, the most frequent are Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, which should be quickly identified for immediate psychological care. The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of these disturbances in a population with social security, located in the states hit by the earthquake that took place on September 19th, 2017 in Mexico. Methods To identify persons with PTSD and depression, a random sample of the population was screened (1–2 months' post-earthquake) in primary health care clinics at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). A questionnaire for the detection of mental conditions (The Screening Questionnaire for Disaster Mental Health, SQD) was used to select people for group therapy and/or psychotherapeutic support, when identified with severe PTSD and high risk of depression. Results Over 44,855 persons (67.9% females, 32.1% males), residents of Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Puebla, Morelos were surveyed. The prevalence of severe PTSD was 11.9% and depression 9.2%. The highest prevalence of PTSD was observed in Mexico City (12.8%) the state with more material damage. Women were at higher risk for PTSD (OR, 2.08; 95% CI 1.97–2.19, p = 0.000) and depression (OR, 1.86; 95% CI 1.72–2.01, p = 0.000). Conclusions The prevalence of PTSD and depression was higher in those states with severe damage caused by the earthquake; women were more susceptible to mental disorders.

According to the Higher Center for Scientific Research (Centro Superior de investigaciones Cientificas: CSIC) in November 7, 2019, it highlights that “Almost two-thirds of Spanish elders feel happy, a larger proportion than their European counterparts, ” which represents more than six million citizens with an age equal or greater than 65 years. Taking notice that almost half of the total indicates that their daily relevant activity is leisure, it is necessary to know how they invest that time, if there are gender differences in this regard and if the senescence period hinders the practice or not of their actions. The report that concerns us also shows up the relevance of active aging, which “allows people to realize their potential for physical, social and mental well-being throughout their entire life cycle” (World Health Organization, 2012) in which the differentactivitiescarried out,a balanced perpormance, flexiblecriteria, depending on the individual characteristics so this leisure time, of personal enjoyment, shall be motivating and significant, leaving behind the sedentary lifestyle related to the media, mainly, which can cause or increase health problems already diagnosed.

EnglishThe relationship between the two cognitive systems that contribute to quantity processing (the Approximate Number System -ANS - and the Symbolic Number System -SNS-) and their influence on mathematical performance and learning difficulties has been investigated in recent years. This study investigates the relationship between SAN accuracy and mathematical performance in a symbolic calculus fluency test in second and third cycle primary school students (3rd to 6th grades). A total of 229 students were assessed with a SAN accuracy test, consisting of a non-symbolic comparison of quantities and a computational fluency test. The descriptive results are within what is expected with respect to the evolutionary character of the estimation and calculation fluidity variables. The correlational analysis showed that there is a low correlation between calculation fluidity and comparison of magnitudes in third (p .05).

Parallel programming continues to be a challenging task despite the many advances in parallel architectures and their wide availability in the cloud. The need both to partition the workload among various processing elements and to specify communication between them to share code and data, and to coordinate their tasks, requires from the developer a deep understanding of the problem, the parallel architecture and the programming language used in order to develop efficient parallel applications. This problem can be reduced significantly through the use of visual programming languages to hide most aspects related to the specification of communication and processes management. This paper presents VPPE, a novel Visual Parallel Programming Environment that allows developers to program parallel applications through organising workflows of interconnected icons. VPPE is a cloud environment that supports icons for specifying: I/O operations, workflow organisation, communication, and processing. Processing computing patterns supported so far include Single Program Multiple Data, Multiple Program Multiple Data, Pipeline, and Master–Slave. The paper highlights the design of VPPE based on a context-free graph grammar, its current implementation based on Java-MPI, its use in developing various parallel applications, and its evaluation compared to Java-MPI text-based programming.

Abstract This research aimed to analyze the perceptions that have a group of 15 teachers in initial training regarding the cultural ecosystem services associated with the native forest. The participants were students of the careers of Pedagogy in Basic General Education (generations of 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), and of Pedagogy in primary education with an honorable mention (the generation of 2017) from the Universidad Católica del Maule-Chile. Two qualitative working techniques used in the study were the focus group and the revised identity drawing. The results showed that in pedagogy students alternative visions coexist with respect to ecosystem services; the participating students relate these services to recycling topics and government institutions. The results also showed the importance that participants assign both to the innumerable benefits and contributions that ecosystem services deliver to human beings and to native forests and their cultural ecosystem services as pedagogical spaces at the service of transversal learning in the development of basic education students. The probability of long-term persistence of a population is strongly determined by adult survival rates, but estimates of survival are currently lacking for most species of birds in the tropical Andes, a global biodiversity hotspot. We calculated apparent survival rates of birds in the Ecuadorian tropical Andes using a moderately long-term (11 yr) capture–recapture dataset from three habitats that varied in how much they had been modified by human activities (native forest, introduced forest, and shrubs). We fit mark–recapture models for 28 species with habitat as a covariable. For all species, recapture rates between sampling sessions were low and varied from 0.04 for Rainbow Starfrontlets (Coeligena iris) to 0.41 for Stripe-headed Brushfinches (Arremon assimilis) when averaged across all occupied habitats. Annual survival rates varied from 0.07 for Black-crested Warblers (Margarornis squamiger) to 0.75 for Violet-throated Metaltails (Metallura baroni). We found no significant differences in survival rates either among habitats or species grouped by habitat specialization. Because we found similar survival rates in native forest and human-modified habitats, our results support those of recent studies concerning the potential value of secondary habitats for the conservation of some species of birds in the tropics. However, our conclusions are tempered by the uncertainty around the estimates of survival rates. Despite the relatively long-term nature of our study, obtaining survival estimates for bird species in this region was challenging, and either more years of study or modification of field protocols may be needed to obtain more precise survival estimates.

BACKGROUND: Greywater and blackwater treatment is necessary to make sanitation and water reuse possible, and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have emerged as a promising technology for achieving this objective. Ion exchange membranes play a key role in double chamber microbial fuel cell performance, but there are differences of opinion as to which membrane type is better. RESULTS: This project was set up to study the effect of three ion exchange membranes (Nafion® 117, Ultrex™ CMI‐7000 and Ultrex™ AMI‐7001) in MFCs using greywater as catholyte in stacks of three microbial fuel cells each. The results demonstrate that the stacks with cationic membranes (Nafion® 117 and Ultrex™ CMI‐7000) generated higher power (201.50 ± 21.62 and 178.74 ± 56.89 mW m⁻³, respectively) than those with the anionic membrane stack Ultrex™ AMI‐7001 (71.57 ± 3.46 mW m⁻³). For the greywater catholyte, a 31% of chemical oxygen demand removal was achieved and proved to be an option as a catholyte in microbial fuel cells for countries that carry out wastewater separation. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained in this study demonstrated that an anion exchange membrane is not a better option for double chamber MFCs. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Background & objectives: Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania spp. are protozoans that cause American trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis, respectively. In endemic foci where both diseases coincide, coinfection can occur. The objective of this work was the characterization of the parasites involved in coinfection in several endemic areas of Venezuela. Methods: Molecular characterization was done in 30 samples of several species of mammals (Didelphis marsupialis, Equus mulus, Rattus rattus, Canis familiaris, Felis catus, and Sciurus granatensis) from the states of Anzoategui, Cojedes and Capital District diagnosed with T. cruzi and Leishmania spp. coinfections. For the typing of T. cruzi DTUs, the markers of miniexon, 24Sa rDNA, 18Sa rDNA, and hsp60-PCR-RFLP (EcoRV) were used. Infection by Leishmania spp. was characterized by miniexon multiplex PCR for complexes of Leishmania and ITS1-PCR-RFLP (HaeIII, HhaI, and RsaI) for the identification of the species. Results: The T. cruzi TcI was present in 100% of the coinfected mammals, which included 76.7% of triple infection by T. cruzi TcI-complex–L. (L) mexicana–L. infantum/chagasi, 13.3% of double infection by T. cruzi TcI-L. mexicana and 10% of double infection by T. cruzi Tcl—L. infantum/chagasi. Interpretation & conclusion: These results suggest that the double or triple infection is a phenomenon existing in almost all the coendemics areas and mammals studied, which might influence the mechanisms of adaptation and pathogenicity of these parasites.

A new set of four fluorinated aromatic poly(benzamide imide)s was synthesized with the objective of preparing condensation polymers with good processability while maintaining high chemical resistance, thermal stability and good mechanical properties. Their synthesis was carried out using commercially available cycloalkane substituted diamines, 3,5-dinitrbenzoyl chloride and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) as starting materials. The research was focused on the influence of pendant groups and the testing of a computational methodology that could help to predict polymer properties based on their structure and available QSPR models. To this end, extensive tests were performed on these new poly(imide)s including, IR, NMR, X-ray diffraction, UV absorption, thermal stability, mechanical tests, gas permeation and solubility analyses. The results showed that the materials obtained present properties similar to many available commercial poly(imide)s. On the other hand, computational simulations demonstrated that the strategy followed could be useful in reducing the number of compounds to be synthesized and at the same time, maximize the success ratio of finding polymers with certain desired properties.

Cancer Research ,Oncology - Abstract
e22505 Background: Knowledge and awareness of cancer screening among medical doctors has a great relevance in prevention of oncologic diseases. It is well known that cancer screening can significantly improve patients’ outcomes and prognosis by reducing morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, improving medical doctors’ knowledge regarding cancer screening can directly influence health promotion behavior as well as their capacity to recognize cancer in premalignant or early stages of the disease. The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge of cancer screening among medical students and doctors. Methods: In this cross-sectional study we evaluated the cancer screening knowledge of medical students and physicians residing in Puebla City, Mexico. This study was conducted by the Centro Oncológico Integral at the Hospital Ángeles de Puebla in Puebla, Mexico. All the participants had given their informed consent for the use of their data for research purposes. Data was collected using an anonymous online-based, pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire to measure their knowledge about cervical, breast, lung, colon and prostate cancer screening. Data analysis was done using R-Statistics. Results: A total of 383 health care professionals were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 28 years. Participants included last year medical students (n = 68, 17.8%), interns (n = 37, 9.7%), social service year physicians (n = 75, 19.6%), general practitioners (n = 138, 36%), residents (n = 23, 6%) and specialists (n = 42, 11%). The questionnaire consisted of 20 questions, the total knowledge score had a quartile 1 (Q1) of 11 points, a quartile 2 (Q2) of 13 points and a quartile 3 (Q3) of 14 points. Participants were categorized in three groups according to their score: 45.95% showed a low (< Q2) level of knowledge, 30.02% a moderate (Q2–Q3) level of knowledge and only 24.02% a high (> Q3) level of knowledge. Residents and specialists showed a better median score than other groups of participants. A one-way ANOVA revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in the level of knowledge according to the occupation of the participants (p = 0.0171). Conclusions: Most participants showed a low to moderate level of knowledge about cancer screening in this study. Active measurements, effective education programs and communication strategies are required to improve the level of knowledge and awareness of health care professionals in cancer screening and prevention.

This work describes mainly the synthesis and characterization of new co-polyimides obtained from the polycondensation of the dianhydride 4,4’-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 4,4’-oxydianiline (ODA) and the new diamine 3,5-diamino-N-(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)benzamide (PyDA). It describes as the different compositions of ODA and PyDA present in the polymers, produce variation on thermal and mechanical properties, which are important characteristics for the development of future nanocomposites derived from these polymers. Both PyDA monomer and polymers were characterized using FT-IR and NMR (1H, 13C, 19F, dept 135°, COSY, HMBC, HMQC) spectroscopy. The inherent viscosity of polymers is between 0.3 to 1.49 dL/g, they are soluble in aprotic polar solvents, such as: DMSO, DMF and DMA. In addition, all co-polymers showed thermal decomposition temperature and glass transition temperatures above 483 °C and 289 °C, respectively. Mechanical tests under tension of co-polymer films showed Young’s modulus between 2.1-3.9 GPa and tensile strength between 35.5 and 120.0 MPa. On the other hand, an increase in crystallinity and hydrophilicity is observed when increasing the amount of pyridinyl groups.

Superabsorbent materials have found several applications in fields related to diapers, hygienic tissues or controlled-release in agriculture. In order to produce more environmentally-friendly materials, some efforts have been focused on grafting copolymerization of acrylic derivatives onto a natural compound (e.g. protein, polysaccharide). This manuscript deals with the production of biodegradable superabsorbent materials produced from a Soy Protein Isolate (SPI), in which their water absorbance capacity is modulated only through the modification of the thermal processing. Thus, SPI was blended with a plasticizer (glycerol), using a 1/1 (w/w) SPI-glycerol ratio, and then injection moulded at different mould temperatures (Tmould). Subsequently, a dehydrothermal (DHT) treatment was carried out, consisting of the storage of bioplastic produced at 50 °C in an oven for a certain period of time (tDHT). The present study demonstrated that thermal conditions (Tmould, tDHT) plays a crucial role in the formation of superabsorbent materials from protein sources like SPI. Mould temperatures as low as 70 °C resulted in materials with a water uptake which defines their superabsorbent character, as long as the tDHT selected is shorter than 10 h. Longer tDHT resulted in a tighter structure with generally higher viscoelastic properties, which was less able to swell and absorb water. A longer moulding stage also lead to a decrease in the water uptake. Thus, thermal processing parameters have been proven to modulate the superabsorbent characteristics of the materials studied, not being necessary any chemical modification of the protein source.

A measurement is reported of differential top quark pair (tt¯) production cross sections, where top quarks are produced at large transverse momenta. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC are from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The measurement uses events where at least one top quark decays as t→Wb→qq¯′b and is reconstructed as a large-radius jet with transverse momentum in excess of 400 GeV. The second top quark is required to decay either in a similar way or leptonically, as inferred from a reconstructed electron or muon, a bottom quark jet, and missing transverse momentum due to the undetected neutrino. The cross section is extracted as a function of kinematic variables of individual top quarks or of the tt¯ system. The results are presented at the particle level, within a region of phase space close to that of the experimental acceptance, and at the parton level and are compared to various theoretical models. In both decay channels, the observed absolute cross sections are significantly lower than the predictions from theory, while the normalized differential measurements are well described.
