Herein, we have evaluated the performance of Prussian blue analog (PBA)-derived Fe–Co(O)OH for the anodic oxidation of a series of organic and inorganic compounds (substituted benzyl alcohols, aliphatic alcohols, substituted benzyl amines, phenol, urea, and hydrazine). The effect of different anodic oxidation reactions (AORs) on the production of cathodic H2, generation of value-added products, and requirement of potential for the electrochemical process has been considered. Special attention has been provided to achieve an industrial-scale current density for AORs avoiding the interference from the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and produce value-added chemicals with a faradaic efficiency (FE) > 90%. Fe–Co(O)OH achieved industrial-scale current density for all AORs without any interference from the OER. Among all the AORs, hydrazine oxidation was found to be suitable in terms of required potential and hydrogen production while the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) and benzyl amine (BAm) led to the most promising performance for value-added product formation. The anodic BA (BAm) oxidation achieved 400 mA cm−2 current density at 1.47 V (1.49 V) vs. RHE with 100% selectivity for benzoic acid (FE = 98.3 ± 1.1%) and cyanobenzene (FE = 97.5 ± 1.2%). Moreover, the replacement of the OER with AORs improved the H2 evolution efficiency significantly. The tussock moth, Orgyia trigotephras Boisduval (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), is one of the main emerging pests of kermes oak, Quercus coccifera L. (Fagaceae), in the Mediterranean area, where it can cause the defoliation of several hectares of forests during its population outbreaks. Despite this, no specific sampling procedures to properly estimate the population density of this pest have been developed yet. The aims of this research were to develop and compare enumerative and binomial sequential sampling plans to estimate the population density of O. trigotephras in forest environments. Data were collected in four forest stands dominated by Q. coccifera in Tunisia for 7 years (from 2013 to 2019) to take into consideration the potential spatio‐temporal variability in pest density. Plant community composition was determined at the beginning of the experimental trials, and enumerative and binomial sampling plans were developed at precision levels of 0.15 and 0.25. Over the entire sampling period, the average O. trigotephras egg batch density differed significantly among sites. Sample sizes of enumerative sampling plans were approximately 39 and 109 trees to estimate an average density of 0.50 O. trigotephras egg batches per tree at the precision levels of 0.25 and 0.15, respectively. Instead, binomial sequential sampling plans required smaller sampling sizes than the enumerative sampling plan. Several statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics, principal component analysis (PCA), and Aligned Rank Transformation-Analysis of Variance (ART-ANOVA) for repeated measures, shed light on the distribution of hive metrics, emphasizing the significance of considering seasonality and location-specific factors. PCA highlights unique characteristics in Tirupur and Coimbatore colonies, while correlation analyses uncover relationships among HB, honey, pollen, brood area, and adult population. Moreover, the study's nuanced findings gave the status of hygienic behavior of A. cerana indica colonies and identified colonies with better colony performance, which will be useful for future breeding programs with A. cerana indica. Featured Application: Featured Application: A Design of Experiments approach and multivariate analysis can help to understand the complex relationship between the chemical profile and the extraction conditions in the preparation of liqueurs such as the myrtle alcoholic drink. Preparation of myrtle liqueur through ethanol-based extraction is a widely employed methodology. Nevertheless, optimization of existing processes is possible, especially through a modern statistical multivariate approach. In this context, a Design of Experiments (DoE) approach was used to quantitatively assess for the first time the effect of the time, ethanol concentration, temperature, and the ratio between the Myrtus communis berries' weight and the extractant volume (v/w) on the amounts of anthocyanins, volatile compounds and dry residues in the liqueur. The kinetic profile relative to the volatile fraction variation during the process was described by gas chromatography (GC), while spectrophotometric analysis allowed quantification of the total anthocyanins and total polyphenols. Multiple response analysis showed that the maximum efficiencies in terms of the considered parameters (desirability function) were reached by setting the temperature to 25 °C and the ethanol percentage to 96% after 20 days of processing. Some hints as to the chemical instability and not negligible sensitivity of anthocyanins in relation to the experimental conditions for longer extraction times were also observed. The European hornet, Vespa crabro L. (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), is a eusocial insect native to Eurasia that was accidentally introduced in the island of Sardinia (Italy) in 2010. This alien generalist predator could impact on native insect species through predation or competition by modifying interspecific relations in sensitive island ecosystems. As part of the Interreg project ALIEM, the present work regarded the first monitoring activity of the European hornet conducted in Sardinia by means of verified citizen science. The main goals of this study were to define the distribution area of the wasp in 2018 and evaluate the profile and the performance of citizen scientists. Our results showed that V. crabro is mainly located in north-eastern Sardinia and that the hotspot was probably the commercial port of Olbia. Furthermore, data provided by contributors were very accurate and none of the parameters considered to define the participants (age, gender, education level, job category) was a true predictor of a volunteer’s ability to recognise the wasp. In conclusion, this small-scale study suggests that citizen scientists could be a valuable aid to monitor already-established alien species and could be part of a surveillance network for early detection of other potentially invasive alien species not yet introduced in Sardinia, such as the yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina, which is already present in northern Italy.

Quantitative constraints on soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics are essential for comprehensive understanding of the terrestrial carbon cycle. Deep soil carbon is of particular interest as it represents large stocks and its turnover times remain highly uncertain. In this study, SOM dynamics in both the top and deep soil across a climatic (average temperature ∼ 1–9 ∘C) gradient are determined using time-series (∼20 years) 14C data from bulk soil and water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC). Analytical measurements reveal enrichment of bomb-derived radiocarbon in the deep soil layers on the bulk level during the last 2 decades. The WEOC pool is strongly enriched in bomb-derived carbon, indicating that it is a dynamic pool. Turnover time estimates of both the bulk and WEOC pool show that the latter cycles up to a magnitude faster than the former. The presence of bomb-derived carbon in the deep soil, as well as the rapidly turning WEOC pool across the climatic gradient, implies that there likely is a dynamic component of carbon in the deep soil. Precipitation and bedrock type appear to exert a stronger influence on soil C turnover time and stocks as compared to temperature.

The Moroccan locust has been considered one of the most dangerous agricultural pests in the Mediterranean region. The economic importance of its outbreaks diminished during the second half of the 20th century due to a high degree of agricultural industrialization and other human-caused transformations of its habitat. Nevertheless, in Sardinia (Italy) from 2019 on, a growing invasion of this locust species is ongoing, being the worst in over three decades. Locust swarms destroyed crops and pasture lands of approximately 60,000 ha in 2022. Drought, in combination with increasing uncultivated land, contributed to forming the perfect conditions for a Moroccan locust population upsurge. The specific aim of this paper is the quantification of land cover land use (LCLU) influence with regard to the recent locust outbreak in Sardinia using remote sensing data. In particular, the role of untilled, fallow, or abandoned land in the locust population upsurge is the focus of this case study. To address this objective, LCLU was derived from Sentinel-2A/B Multispectral Instrument (MSI) data between 2017 and 2021 using time-series composites and a random forest (RF) classification model. Coordinates of infested locations, altitude, and locust development stages were collected during field observation campaigns between March and July 2022 and used in this study to assess actual and previous land cover situation of these locations. Findings show that 43% of detected locust locations were found on untilled, fallow, or uncultivated land and another 23% within a radius of 100 m to such areas. Furthermore, oviposition and breeding sites are mostly found in sparse vegetation (97%). This study demonstrates that up-to-date remote sensing data and target-oriented analyses can provide valuable information to contribute to early warning systems and decision support and thus to minimize the risk concerning this agricultural pest. This is of particular interest for all agricultural pests that are strictly related to changing human activities within transformed habitats.

Ion irradiation is an exceptionally effective approach to induce controlled surface modification/defects in semiconducting thin films. In this investigation, ion-irradiated Se–Te-based compounds exhibit electrical transport properties that greatly favor the transformation of waste heat into electricity. Enhancements of both the Seebeck coefficient (S) and the power factor (PF) of In2(Te0.98Se0.02)3 films under 120 MeV Ni9+ ion irradiation were examined. The maximum S value of the pristine film was about ~221 µVK−1. A significantly higher S value of about ~427 µVK−1 was obtained following irradiation at 1 × 1013 ions/cm2. The observed S values suggest the n-type conductivity of these films, in agreement with Hall measurements. Additionally, Ni ion irradiation increased the PF from ~1.23 to 4.91 µW/K2m, demonstrating that the irradiated films outperformed the pristine samples. This enhancement in the TE performance of the In2(Te0.98Se0.02)3 system is elucidated by irradiation-induced effects that are revealed by structural and morphological studies.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) being a causative agent for global pandemic disease nCOVID’19, has acquired much scientific attention for the development of effective vaccines and drugs. Several attempts have been made to explore repurposing existing drugs known for their anti-viral activities, and test the traditional herbal medicines known for their health benefiting and immune-boosting activity against SARS-CoV-2. In this study, efforts were made to examine the potential of 605 phytochemicals from 37 plant species (of which 14 plants were endemic to India) and 139 antiviral molecules (Pubchem and Drug bank) in inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 multiple protein targets through a virtual screening approach. Results of our experiments revealed that SARS-CoV-2 MPro shared significant disimilarities against SARS-CoV MPro and MERS-CoV MPro indicating the need for discovering novel drugs. This study has screened the phytochemical cyanin (Zingiber officinale) which may exhibit broad-spectrum inhibitory activity against main proteases of SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV with binding energies of (−) 8.3 kcal/mol (−) 8.2 kcal/mol and (−) 7.7 kcal/mol respectively. Amentoflavone, agathisflavone, catechin-7-o-gallate and chlorogenin were shown to exhibit multi-target inhibitory activity. Further, Mangifera indica, Anacardium occidentale, Vitex negundo, Solanum nigrum, Pedalium murex, Terminalia chebula, Azadirachta indica, Cissus quadrangularis, Clerodendrum serratum and Ocimum basilicumaree reported as potential sources of phytochemicals for combating nCOVID’19. More interestingly, this study has highlighted the anti-viral properties of the traditional herbal formulation “Kabasura kudineer” recommended by AYUSH, a unit of Government of India. Short listed phytochemicals could be used as leads for future drug design and development. Genomic analysis of identified herbal plants will help in unraveling molecular complexity of therapeutic and anti-viral properties which proffer lot of chance in the pharmaceutical field for researchers to scout new drugs in drug discovery.

Lipoma is a benign neoplasm arising from yellow fat. Often it can be hyperplasia or combination of neoplasm and hyperplasia. It is composed of mature adipocytes and uniform nuclei that are identical to those seen in normal adult fat. It is called as universal tumour/ubiquitous tumour as it can occur anywhere in the body outside of brain. It can be localised (encapsulated) or diffuse (nonencapsulated). It can occur in sites like subcutaneous, subfascial, intramuscular, intermuscular in anterior abdominal wall, paraosteal, submucosal, subserosal sites. Here, a case of torsion of the lipoma in the greater omentum is reported presenting as acute abdomen. This eight-year-old girl presented with symptoms of right iliac fossa pain, signs of localised peritonitis and right psoas irritation. Appendicular mass/abscess was considered on clinical examination. The radiological evaluation ruled out appendicular pathology and an ovarian pathology possibly a torted ovary was suspected. During surgical exploration, a tumour of greater omentum was identified and resected. This rarity of the differential diagnosis for a right Iliac fossa mass is highlighted herewith.

BackgroundPrior studies have demonstrated an increased stillbirth rate. It was suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted on attendances for reduced fetal movements. Thus, we sought to ascertain the impact of the pandemic on attendances for reduced fetal movements (RFM) in our unit, ultrasound provision for reduced fetal movements, and the stillbirth rate.MethodsThis was a single site retrospective cohort study involving all women complaining of a 1st episode of reduced fetal movements between 01/03/2020-30/04/2020 (COVID) to 01/03/2019-30/04/2019 (Pre-COVID). Data were retrieved from computerised hospital records and statistical analyses were performed using GraphPad Prism and SPSS.Results22% (179/810) of women presented with a 1st episode of reduced fetal movements Pre-COVID compared to 18% (145/803) during COVID (p = 0.047). Primiparous women were significantly over-represented in this population with a 1.4-fold increase in attendances during COVID (67% vs 48%, p = 0.0005). Neither the total stillbirth rate nor the stillbirth rate amongst women who presented with reduced fetal movements changed during COVID. Ultrasound provision was not impacted by COVID with 95% of the scans performed according to local guidelines, compared to Pre-COVID (74%, p = 0.0001).ConclusionsThere is a significant decrease in 1st attendances for reduced fetal movements during COVID-19 pandemic. Primiparous women were 1.4 times more likely to attend with RFM. Women should be reassured that COVID-19 has not resulted in a decreased provision of care for RFM, and has not impacted on the stillbirth rate.

Inflammatory external root resorption is one of the major complications after traumatic dental injury. It is characterized by the loss of mineralized dental tissue which may, ultimately, result in loss of the tooth. However, with appropriate treatment, prognosis for these teeth may be greatly improved, by preventing or arresting resorption. This is a case report of an 18-year-old male patient presented with root canal treated maxillary central incisors associated with pain; with history of trauma. Radiographic examination revealed periradicular lesion and associated pathologic resorption of the apical region of the root with respect to 11 and calcification of the root canal with inadequate obturation with respect to 21. After removal of the root canal filling, 11 was disinfected with intracanal double antibiotic paste. After 2 weeks, antibiotic dressing was removed, and apical third was sealed with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Canal was obturated with custom-fit gutta-percha and accessory cones with AH plus sealer and restoration was done with composite resin. Retreatment was also done with respect to 21 and obturated with custom-fit gutta-percha. Both teeth were restored with E-max crown. No clinical symptoms were apparent, significant osseous healing of the periradicular region was observed with arrest of external root resorption with respect to 11 and no periapical changes were apparent with respect to 21 on subsequent follow-up.

Cold extraction methods with ethanol applied to the flavedo of Citrus fruits have been commonly applied for the preparation of several liquors. In order to obtain the extraction optimization and then the best ratio of functional ingredients in the extract, the flavedo of Citrus grandis Osbeck (pummelo) was subjected to a maceration with absolute ethanol at room temperature as well as at 40 °C. The kinetics of the extraction methods were monitored by UV–VIS spectroscopy, and a chemical fingerprint characteristic of each extract was determined by statistical multivariate analysis of the UV–VIS raw data. Additionally, the extracts were qualitatively characterized by NMR spectroscopy as well as by solid phase micro extraction followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). NMR analysis confirmed the presence of the typical flavanones of Citrus such as naringin and naringenin, while the GC/MS analysis showed that the headspace of the liquor is characterized by two main compounds represented by β-myrcene and limonene. At the end, the temperature seems to not affect the time of extraction, which is complete after 25 h; however, UV–VIS-based multivariate analysis revealed that a different overall chemical composition is obtained depending on the temperature, probably due to the extraction of minor chemicals as well as due to different levels of the same compounds in the two extracts.

Lymantria dispar is the main threat to Mediterranean forests. Sampling methods used for monitoring the pest population density are generally very time-consuming for practical purposes, such as the delimitation of infested areas for control programs. Enumerative and binomial sequential sampling plans were developed using data collected in cork oak forests in Sardinia (Italy). The Taylor’s power law (TPL) was used to evaluate the degree of aggregation of L. dispar egg masses among trees and to develop enumerative sampling plans at precision levels of 0.10 and 0.25 using the Green’s method. Furthermore, binomial plans were computed by Wald’s sequential probability ratio test. Lymantria dispar egg masses on trees were significantly aggregated and the degree of aggregation was similar in all population development phases. Overall, only 31 cork oak trees are to be monitored at the economic damage threshold of 2.5 egg masses/tree with a precision level of 0.25. Binomial sequential sampling plans also required lower sampling sizes (26.9–31.4 trees) than conventional sampling plans. Enumerative and binomial sampling plans could represent suitable methods for sampling L. dispar egg masses in Mediterranean forests, with the practical advantage of lower cost and time consumption than standard sampling plans.

The treatment of used vegetable oils (UVOs) with clays represents a pivotal step in their industrial recycling process as well as one of the most challenging topics for researchers. In particular, cheap, effective, and sustainable powders need to be explored in order to develop new processes which produce beneficial results in relation to economic and environmental aspects. In this context, five samples within commercial and waste vegetable oils were treated with two sodium- and calcium-based bentonites employing a low oil/bentonite ratio (0.15 wt%). The outcomes of the processes were monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy and compared with the data relative to the parent commercial edible oil. In particular, treatment of FT-IR data by multivariate statistical analysis allowed us to determine a chemical fingerprint characteristic of each sample. Important relationships between the overall chemical composition and the specific clay employed and the treatment time (2 or 4 h) were highlighted. Finally, N2 physisorption, TEM microscopy, and FT-IR analyses of the more efficient Na bentonite allowed us to characterize the material and thus to furnish all the information needed to set-up a general protocol for the partial regeneration of waste vegetable oil destined for further processing.

We evaluated the potential use of ants as a powerful tool for environmental monitoring, together with the applicability of the functional group approach as an alternative method for studying ant communities in cork oak woodlands. Variations in ant community composition, diversity and functional groups were studied in two cork oak forested sites across the Mediterranean region. Ants were sampled using pitfall traps placed along linear transects at 12 sites located in the main cork districts of Italy and Morocco (Gallura in Sardinia, and Maâmora, east of Rabat). A total of 13.501 specimens were collected, belonging to 38 species (five shared species). A distinct separation in the NMDS plots between Gallura and Maâmora ant assemblages was clearly visible. Ant species composition was widely different between the two districts and significant differences were detected within the Gallura district at the species level. Opportunist species were well represented in Gallura (about 27% of average Bray-Curtis similarity) as well as cryptic species (over 23%). In the Maâmora forest, generalized Myrmicinae, hot climate specialists and opportunists contributed equally to the average similarity (together about 53%). Multi-scale ant diversity showed that the true turnover was higher in Gallura than in Maâmora. These findings support the idea that the functional group approach, rather than species diversity per se, could be considered as a valuable tool to detect the response of the ant community to environmental changes in Mediterranean cork oak woodlands. Using ants as bioindicators could help not only in detecting early warning signs of habitat disturbance, but also in defining a useful management strategy to increase the resilience of agroforestry systems under future global change scenarios.
