The gas electron multiplier technology has been proven to tolerate rat e larger than 50 MHz/cm2 without noticeable aging and to provide sub resolution on working chambers up to 45 cm x 45 cm. A new gas electron multiplier-based tracker is under development for the Hall A upgrade at Jefferson Lab. The chambers of the tracker have been designed in a modular way: each chamber consists of 3 adjacent gas electron multiplier modules, with an active area of 40 cm x 50 cm each. We optimized the gas flow inside the gas electron multiplier module volume, using the COMSOL physics simulator framework; the COMSOL-based analysis includes the design of the inlet and outlet pipes and the maximization of the uniformity of the gas flow. We have defined the procedures for the assembling of the gas electron multiplier modules and designed a mechanical system (TENDIGEM) that will be used to stretch the GEM foils at the proper tension (few kg/cm); the TENDIGEM is based on the original design developed at LNF.

A new Large-Acceptance Forward Angle Spectrometer (Super BigBite) is under development at JLab/Hall A to optimally exploit the exciting opportunities offered by the 12 GeV upgrade of the electron beam. The tracking of this new apparatus is based on the gas electron multiplier technology, which has been chosen to optimize cost/performance, position resolution and meet the high hits rate (>1 MHz/cm2). The first gas electron multiplier detector prototypes were designed, built and tested at the DESY test beam facility in Hamburg, by using an electron beam with energy from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV. In particular, two gas electron multiplier chambers (10 x 10 cm2 and 40 x 50 cm2, respectively) were equipped with a new implementation of the APV25 readout chip. Measurements were performed at different impact points and angles between the electron beam and the plane of the gas electron multiplier chambers. In this report we present the technical characteristics of the detector and comment on the presently achieved performance.

154. Influence of defects on the kinetic of C49–C54 TiSi2 transformation.

TiSi2 C49 thin films with different concentrations of defects have been prepared by conventional annealing, in the 460–540 °C temperature range, of a Ti films deposited on a polycrystalline Si layer. The residual sheet resistance of the C49 films decreased with increasing both the annealing temperature and the annealing duration indicating the occurrence of defect annealing at higher temperature and/or longer times. A successive annealing at 650 °C was used to promote the C49–C54 transition and the transformation rate was measured by in situ sheet resistance measurements. The C49–C54 transition time decreased with the residual sheet resistance of the C49 phase. The activation energy for the transformation increased from 3.09±0.75 to 6.12±0.96 eV with increasing the defect concentration in the C49 phase. This strong dependence can explain the large variation of the kinetic results reported in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of a thin Ta layer at the Si/Ti interface on the intermediate phase formation has been studied in detail by in situ sheet resistance, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy of partially reacted samples. When a Ta layer is deposited at the Si/Ti interface, a new intermediate phase has been detected, i.e. the hexagonal TiSi[sub 2] C40. This phase grows on the C40-TaSi[sub 2] that is formed at the interface with silicon. The lattice parameters of the C40-TiSi[sub 2] obtained by ab initio calculations agree quite well with the experimental ones. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ProtoDUNE-SP is the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype that is under construction and will be operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform (NP) starting in 2018. ProtoDUNE-SP, a crucial part of the DUNE effort towards the construction of the first DUNE 10-kt fiducial mass far detector module (17 kt total LAr mass), is a significant experiment in its own right. With a total liquid argon (LAr) mass of 0.77 kt, it represents the largest monolithic single-phase LArTPC detector to be built to date. This document complements and completes what was submitted last year to PAC45 as an update to the proposal PR12-16-001 "Dark matter search in a Beam-Dump eXperiment (BDX)" at Jefferson Lab submitted to JLab-PAC44 in 2016. Following the suggestions contained in the PAC45 report, in coordination with the lab, we ran a test to assess the beam-related backgrounds and validate the simulation framework used to design the BDX experiment. Using a common Monte Carlo framework for the test and the proposed experiment, we optimized the selection cuts to maximize the reach considering simultaneously the signal, cosmic-ray background (assessed in Catania test with BDX-Proto) and beam-related backgrounds (irreducible NC and CC neutrino interactions as determined by simulation). Our results confirmed what was presented in the original proposal: with 285 days of a parasitic run at 65 $\mu$A (corresponding to $10^{22}$ EOT) the BDX experiment will lower the exclusion limits in the case of no signal by one to two orders of magnitude in the parameter space of dark-matter coupling versus mass.

The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE far detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. The study of quasifree Compton scattering on the neutron in the energy range of Eγ=0.75-1.5 GeV is presented. The data reveal a narrow peak at W~1.685 GeV. This result, being considered in conjunction with the recent evidence for a narrow structure at W~1.68 GeV in η photoproduction on the neutron, suggests the existence of a nucleon resonance with unusual properties: a mass M~1.685 GeV, a narrow width Γ ⩽30 MeV, and the much stronger photoexcitation on the neutron than on the proton. The $ \Sigma$ beam asymmetry in the photoproduction of neutral pions from quasi-free nucleons in a deuteron target was measured for the first time between 0.60 and 1.50GeV, with the GRAAL polarized and tagged photon beam. The asymmetry values from the quasi-free proton were found equal to the ones extracted from a pure proton target. The asymmetries from quasi-free proton and quasi-free neutron were found equal up to 0.82GeV and substantially different at higher energies. The effect of a thin Ta layer at the Si/Ti interface on the intermediate phase formation has been studied in detail by in situ sheet resistance, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy of partially reacted samples. When a Ta layer is deposited at the Si/Ti interface, a new intermediate phase has been detected, i.e. the hexagonal TiSi2 C40. This phase grows on the C40-TaSi2 that is formed at the interface with silicon. The lattice parameters of the C40-TiSi2 obtained by ab initio calculations agree quite well with the experimental ones. The effect of a thin Ta layer at the Ti/Si interface on the kinetic of the C49-C54 transition will be shown in detail. The transformation kinetic has been monitored by in situ sheet resistance measurements that, coupled to structural characterisation, allowed to evidence the presence of an intermediate phase before the C54 formation. The temperature of the C54 phase formation decreases with a Ta concentration of 4.5·1015 cm−2 and μ-Raman images of partially transformed samples indicates that the density of C54 grains in presence of Ta is about one order of magnitude higher with respect to pure Ti/Si samples.

The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE Far Detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Volume 1 contains an executive summary that describes the general aims of this document. The remainder of this first volume provides a more detailed description of the DUNE physics program that drives the choice of detector technologies. It also includes concise outlines of two overarching systems that have not yet evolved to consortium structures: computing and calibration. Volumes 2 and 3 of this IDR describe, for the single-phase and dual-phase technologies, respectively, each detector module's subsystems, the technical coordination required for its design, construction, installation, and integration, and its organizational structure., Comment: 83 pages, 11 figures

- Abstract
Background: "Fast Track surgery" is a therapeutic program of large application, despite some doubts about its applicability and real validity. Literature review shows that this approach to colo-rectal surgery, particularly video-assisted, can allow a rapid recovery, better performance and a faster postoperative functional autonomy of the work, which can be discharged without cause additional welfare costs; in addition it can be reproducible in different health reality., Purpose: To analyze the possibility to apply the Fast Truck protocol in patients undergoing colorectal surgery in a rural hospital and non specialistic Unit of Surgery., Patients and Methods: We have conducted a prospective, randomized study on 80 patients subjected to colorectal surgery in the last year., Results: The protocol was observed in 95% of cases, compliance with the Fast Track was high and general morbidity was limited (7.8%)., Conclusion: This "aggressive" approach, which has fundamentally altered the usual surgical behavior, seems to allow a mean length of stay significantly lower than in controls (p < 0.05) with positive implications for patients and containment of health care costs, even after discharge (no need for home care in 92% of cases, no early re-admittance to the hospital). Homogeneous protocols are desirable, as well as an increased enrollment, to consolidate these rehabilitation programs in order to provide a reference for all hospitals.

- Abstract
We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A(PV) in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 208Pb. A(PV) is sensitive to the radius of the neutron distribution (R(n)). The result A(PV)=0.656±0.060(stat)±0.014(syst) ppm corresponds to a difference between the radii of the neutron and proton distributions R(n)-R(p)=0.33(-0.18)(+0.16) fm and provides the first electroweak observation of the neutron skin which is expected in a heavy, neutron-rich nucleus.

- Abstract
The "standard" Hall A apparatus at Jefferson Lab (TOF and aerogel threshold Cherenkov detectors) does not provide complete identification for proton, kaon and pion. To this aim, a proximity focusing C(6)F(14)/CsI RICH (Ring Image CHerenkov) detector has been designed, built, tested and operated to separate kaons from pions with a pion contamination of a few percent up to 2.4GeV/c. Two quite different experimental investigations have benefitted of the RICH identification: on one side, the high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy series of experiments on carbon, beryllium and oxygen, devoted to the study of the lambda-nucleon potential. On the other side, the measurements of the single spin asymmetries of pion and kaon on a transversely polarized (3)He target are of utmost interest in understanding QCD dynamics in the nucleon. We present the technical features of such a RICH detector and comment on the presently achieved performance in hadron identification., (2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

The ratio of the electromagnetic proton elastic form factors, G(p)(E)/G(p)(M), has been measured at Jefferson Lab up to Q(2) approximately 9(GeV/c)(2), by using the CEBAF 6GeV electron beam, and revealing an unexpected and challenging physical behaviour. The 2014 scheduled 12GeV upgrade will allow the measurement of G(p)(E)/G(p)(M) up to Q(2) approximately 15(GeV/c)(2), by taking advantage of the new large-acceptance forward spectrometer Super BigBite (SBS) in Hall A. Measurements of neutron form factors in the region around 10(GeV/c)(2), where quark confinement plays an important role, are expected to show the behaviour already observed in the proton case., (2010 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
In the years an increase of last biliary injuries during laparoscopic cholecystectomy was observed. At present this occurrence rate is 0.1-3.4% of laparoscopic procedures. Probably this is to be related to less contraindications to cholecystectomy by laparoscopic procedures, with increase of more difficult operations. The intraoperative biliary injuries are due to anatomical anomalies of the local structures, mistakes of technique, flogosis of the cholecisto-choledocal region. Factors preventing iatrogenic injuries are accurate and standardized operative technique, adoption of modern instruments, intraoperative cholangiography. The Authors have reviewed their experience based on 1236 laparoscopic cholecysectomies performed in six years (1992-1998) in their own structure. Four lesions of the biliary tract (0.3%) have occurred: three Bismuth I-II and one Bismuth IV. They have always performed intraoperative cholangiography, without false negative, in contrast with present literature. They conclude underlining the need of the routine contrastrographic study of the biliary tract in all cholecysectomies as well as of an adequate training in radiological imagines interpretation.
