We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin cross section asymmetry for deep-inelastic muon-nucleon interactions with two high transverse momentum hadrons in the final state. Two methods of event classification are used to increase the contribution of the photon-gluon fusion process to above 30%. The most effective one, based on a neural network approach, provides the asymmetries [Formula Presented] and [Formula Presented] From these values we derive an averaged gluon polarization [Formula Presented] at an average fraction of nucleon momentum carried by gluons [Formula Presented].

- Abstract
We present the results of the spin asymmetries A1 of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic region extending down to x=6×10-5 and Q2=0.01 GeV2. The data were taken with a dedicated low x trigger, which required hadron detection in addition to the scattered muon, so as to reduce the background at low x. The results complement our previous measurements and the two sets are consistent in the overlap region. No significant spin effects are found in the newly explored region. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

The 1996 data taking of the SMC experiment used polarized protons to measure the spin-dependent structure function g1 of the proton. Three liters of solid granular ammonia were irradiated at the Bonn electron linac in order to create the paramagnetic radicals which are needed for polarizing the protons. Proton polarizations of ± (90 ± 2.5)% were routinely reached. An analysis based on a theoretical line shape for spin-1 systems with large quadrupolar broadening was developed which allowed the nitrogen polarization in the ammonia to be determined with a 10% relative error. The measured quadrupolar coupling constant of 14N agrees well with earlier extrapolated values. The polarization of the nitrogen nuclei was measured as a function of the proton polarization in order to provide a test of the equal spin temperature (EST) hypothesis. It was found to be closely valid under the dynamic nuclear polarization conditions with which the protons are polarized. Large deviations from EST could be induced by cross relaxing the proton and nitrogen spin systems at low fields. Nitrogen polarizations up to 40% were reached by these means. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function gd1 of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of gd1. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute gd1(x) at a constant Q2. At Q2 = 10GeV2, we obtain a first moment Γd1 = ∫10 gd1dx = 0.041 ± 0.008, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon a0 = 0.30 ± 0.08, and an axial charge of the strange quark as = -0.09 ± 0.03. Using our earlier determination Γp1, we obtain Γp1 - Γn1 = 0.183 ± 0.035 at Q2 - 10GeV2. This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts Γp1 - Γn1 = 0.186 ± 0.002 at the same Q2. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The muon-proton and muon-deuteron inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections were measured in the kinematic range 0.002 < x < 0.60 and 0.5 < Q(2) < 75 GeV2 at incident muon energies of 90, 120, 200 and 280 GeV. These results are based on the full data set collected by the New Muon Collaboration, including the data taken with a small angle trigger. The extracted values of the structure functions F-2(p) and F-2(d) are in good agreement with those from other experiments. The data cover a sufficient range of y to allow the determination of the ratio of the longitudinally to transversely polarised virtual photon absorption cross sections, R = sigma(L)/sigma(T), for 0.002 < x < 0.12. The values of R are compatible with a perturbative QCD prediction; they agree with earlier measurements and extend to smaller x.

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function $g_1^p$ in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range $0.003 < x < 0.7$ and $1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2$. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured $g_1^p(x,Q^2)$ to a fixed $Q^2_0$. The first moment of $g_1^p$ at $Q^2_0 = 10 GeV^2$ is $\Gamma^p = 0.136\pm 0.013(stat.) \pm 0.009(syst.)\pm 0.005(evol.)$. This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge $a_0$ is found to be $0.28 \pm 0.16$. In the Adler-Bardeen factorization scheme, $\Delta g \simeq 2$ is required to bring $\Delta \Sigma$ in agreement with the Quark-Parton Model. A combined analysis of all available proton and deuteron data confirms the Bjorken sum rule., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures, uses ReVTex and smc.sty. submitted to Physical Review D

A liquid hydrogen target has been developed for the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The target has a diameter of 40 mm and a length of 2.5 meter, creating an active volume of about 3 liter of liquid hydrogen. The cylindrical part of the target wall is formed by a Kapton® foil strip, wound and glued to a thickness of 0.125 mm. The Kapton® foil is used to minimize the energy loss of the particles, scattered or created within the target volume, crossing the target boundary. The two end-caps enclosing the target volume have been fabricated from Mylar®. The system is cooled with a 30 W at 20 K cryocooler, delivering the cooling capacity for the cool-down as well as for the continuous operation of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New results for the double spin asymmetry A(1)(p) and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g(1)(p) are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160 GeV, in particular at lower values of x. They improve the statistical precision of g(1)(p)(x) by about a factor of two in the region x less than or similar to 0.02. A next-to-leading order QCD fit to the g(1) world data is performed. It leads to a new determination of the quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin, Delta Sigma, ranging from 0.26 to 0.36, and to a re-evaluation of the first moment of g(1)(p). The uncertainty of Delta Sigma is mostly due to the large uncertainty in the present determinations of the gluon helicity distribution. A new evaluation of the Bjorken sum rule based on the COMPASS results for the non-singlet structure function g(1)(NS) (x, Q(2)) yields as ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants vertical bar gA/gV vertical bar = 1.22 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.10 (syst.), which validates the sum rule to an accuracy of about 9%.

We have studied transverse momentum distributions for exclusiveρ
0 muoproduction on protons and heavier nuclei at 22<25 GeV
2 . TheQ2 dependence of the slopes of thept 2 andt′ distributions is discussed. The influence of the non-exclusive background is investigated. Thept 2 -slope for exclusive events is 4.3±0.6±0.7 GeV−2 at largeQ2 . Thept 2 spectra are much softer than inclusivept 2 spectra of leading hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering.- Published

We present the final results of the spin asymmetries A(1) and the spin structure functions g(1) of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic range 0.0008 < x < 0.7 and 0.2 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2. For the determination of A(1), in addition to the usual method which employs inclusive scattering events and includes a large radiative background at low x, we use a new method which minimizes the radiative background by selecting events with at least one hadron as well as a muon in the final state. We find that this hadron method gives smaller errors for x < 0.02, so it is combined with the usual method to provide the optimal set of results. [S0556-2821(98)07017-9].
