Abstract

A Cu/TiO2 photocatalyst has been synthesised by reducing a Cu precursor with NaBH4 onto the surface of a sulphate pretreated TiO2 obtained by a sol-gel procedure. The catalyst, that shows a clearly defined anatase phase with high crystallinity and relatively high surface area, and contains Cu2O and CuO deposits on its surface, has been used to produce hydrogen in a solar driven pilot plant scale photocatalytic reactor. Different electron donor aqueous solutions (methanol, glycerol, and a real municipal wastewater treatment plant influent) have been tested showing similar or even higher energy efficiency than those obtained using more expensive noble metal based photocatalytic systems. The glycerol solutions have provided the best reactive environments for hydrogen generation.

Abstract

[Resumen] Actualmente es necesario el uso de instalaciones de tratamiento de aguas residuales debido a la escasez de recursos hídricos de calidad. Las plantas de nanofiltración presentan cada vez más interés, ya que requieren menos energía que otros sistemas. En la Plataforma Solar de Almería se utiliza una planta de nanofiltración gestionada de forma manual basándose en la experiencia de los operarios. En este trabajo se muestra el proceso de análisis, modelado y control de esta planta, que ha ayudado a mejorar el conocimiento de la misma, a determinar su punto de operación e identificar las variables que más influyen en el comportamiento del sistema. Además, con la arquitectura de control propuesta, basada en un controlador multivariable con desacoplo, se puede llegar a alcanzar unas condiciones idóneas de funcionamiento en cuanto a producción, seguridad y mantenimiento de las membranas, como se puede observar en los resultados que se presentan., [Abstract] Nowadays, the use of wastewater treatment facilities is necessary due to the scarcity of quality water resources. Nanofiltration plants are becoming more and more interesting, since they require less energy than other systems. A manually operated nanofiltration plant is used at Plataforma Solar de Almería, based on the operators’ experience. This work is devoted to the analysis, modeling and control of this kind of plant, which has helped to both improve knowledge and to determine the optimal operating point and identify the variables that most influence the behavior of the system. Furthermore, an automatic control architecture is proposed, based on a multivariable controller with decoupling. It is possible to achieve ideal operating conditions in terms of production, safety and membranes maintenance, as can be seen in the results presented.

158. Plerixafor on demand in ten healthy family donors as a rescue strategy to achieve an adequate graft for stem cell transplantation

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation, the collection of an appropriate number of HSCs while maintaining a high level of safety for healthy donors is fundamental. Inadequate HSC mobilization can be seen with the standard use of granulocyte-colony-stimulating (G-CSF). Plerixafor (PL) is a chemokine receptor CXC Type 4-stromal-derived factor 1 inhibitor; its HSC-mobilizing properties are synergistic with G-CSF in poor mobilizing patients. The use of PL as adjuvant or alternative to G-CSF in healthy donors has shown a good safety profile but is so far off-label. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We report 10 healthy HSC donors treated with PL because of insufficient response to G-CSF alone or contraindication to G-CSF. Eight donors did not mobilize enough CD34+ cells with G-CSF alone because poor mobilizers or because insufficient HSCs were harvested according to the clinical need of the patient; in two cases G-CSF administration and marrow harvest were unfeasible or contraindicated in the donor. RESULTS: The use of PL for mobilization increased the number of circulating CD34+ cells by 2.8-fold and the CD34+/kg collection by 3.0-fold. Only mild adverse events were reported (bone pain or discomfort) and not univocally attributable to PL. Rate of engraftment and graft-versus-host disease were similar to those seen in recipients of grafts from G-CSF only-mobilized donors. CONCLUSION: We exposed 10 allogeneic donors to mobilization with PL. PL was well tolerated in all cases and ensured procurement of an adequate graft for transplantation resulting in a normal hematopoietic engraftment.

Abstract

The pilot-scale solar degradation of trimethoprim (TMP) in different water matrices (demineralized water: DW, simulated natural freshwater: SW; simulated wastewater: SWW; and real effluent: RE) was investigated in this study. DOC removal was lower in the case of SW compared to DW, which can be attributed to the presence of inorganic anions which may act as scavengers of the HO . Furthermore, the presence of organic carbon and higher salt content in SWW and RE led to lower mineralization per dose of hydrogen peroxide compared to DW and SW. Toxicity assays in SWW and RE were also performed indicating that toxicity is attributed to the compounds present in RE and their by-products formed during solar Fenton treatment and not to the intermediates formed by the oxidation of TMP. A large number of compounds generated by the photocatalytic transformation of TMP were identified by UPLC-QToF/MS. The degradation pathway revealed differences among the four matrices; however hydroxylation, demethylation and cleavage reactions were observed in all matrices. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that TMP degradation products have been identified by adopting a solar Fenton process at a pilot-scale set-up, using four different aqueous matrices.

Abstract

This work investigated the application of a solar driven advanced oxidation process (solar Fenton), for the degradation of the antibiotic ofloxacin (OFX) in various environmental matrices at a pilot-scale. All experiments were carried out in a compound parabolic collector pilot plant in the presence of doses of H2O2 (2.5mgL−1) and at an initial Fe2+ concentration of 2mgL−1. The water matrices used for the solar Fenton experiments were: demineralized water (DW), simulated natural freshwater (SW), simulated effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plant (SWW) and pre-treated real effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plant (RE) to which OFX had been spiked at 10mgL−1. Dissolved organic carbon removal was found to be dependent on the chemical composition of the water matrix. OFX mineralization was higher in DW (78.1%) than in SW (58.3%) at 12mgL−1 of H2O2 consumption, implying the complexation of iron or the scavenging of hydroxyl radicals by the inorganic ions present in SW. On the other hand, the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in SWW and RE, led to lower mineralization per dose of H2O2 compared to DW and SW. The major transformation products (TPs) formed during the solar Fenton treatment of OFX, were elucidated using liquid chromatography–time of flight-mass spectrometry (LC–ToF-MS). The transformation of OFX proceeded through a defluorination reaction, accompanied by some degree of piperazine and quinolone substituent transformation while a hydroxylation mechanism occurred by attack of the hydroxyl radicals generated during the process leading to the formation of TPs in all the water matrices, seven of which were tentatively identified. The results obtained from the toxicity bioassays indicated that the toxicity originates from the DOM present in RE and its oxidation products formed during the photocatalytic treatment and not from the TPs resulted from the oxidation of OFX. •The pilot-scale solar Fenton degradation of ofloxacin was studied.•Mineralization was lower in the wastewater matrices due to the presence of organics.•Toxicity was found to originate from the oxidation of DOM present in the RE.•The transformation of OFX proceeded through the formation of seven intermediates.•The degradation pathway exhibited differences among the four matrices. 461-462 39 48
