Abstract

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown etiology and pathogenesis. It presents in patients younger than 40 years of age. The lungs are the most commonly affected organ. Till the present day, there is no single specific test that will accurately diagnose sarcoidosis; as a result, the diagnosis of sarcoidosis relies on a combination of clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings. Patients with sarcoidosis have been found to have an increased risk of pulmonary embolism compared to the normal population. MTHFR and factor V Leiden mutations have been reported to increase the risk of thrombosis in patients. We hereby present a case of a middle aged man with sarcoidosis who developed a right main pulmonary embolism and was found to be double heterozygous for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene polymorphisms and factor V Leiden and homozygous for the D-allele of the angiotensin converting enzyme gene.

Abstract

Genotypic profiles of the natural killer cell immunoglobulin–like receptors (KIR) have been reported to vary among different ethnic groups and variable clinical entities. This study represents the first report on its distribution among patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). We studied 56 unrelated Lebanese FMF patients, had their DNA typed using sequence-specific primer (SSP) technique for the presence of 16 KIR gene and pseudogene loci, and compared them to the general Lebanese population. The AA1 genotype was the most frequent in both the FMF and control groups. Six new KIR profiles were identified. The FMF group showed a higher prevalence of KIR 3DP1*003 (p < 0.05) and an increase in the BB genotype compared with controls. The results lead to an interesting future research question of whether or not KIR genotype is involved in the predisposition to or pathogenesis of FMF. This is the first report that describes the KIR genotypic profile in this important clinical disease.

Abstract

Aims The Natural Killer Cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptor (KIR) genotype profiling in Follicular Lymphoma has not been reported before in the literature. Materials and methods DNA extracted from 20 Follicular Lymphoma patients and 62 healthy controls was analyzed for KIR genotyping using a polymerase chain reaction/sequence specific primers technique (PCR/SSP) for the presence of 16 KIR gene and pseudogene loci. Results The AA, AB, and BB genotype frequencies were, respectively, 20%, 60% and 20% with an A:B ratio of 1:1. KIR 2DL4, KIR 3DL2, KIR 3DL3, and KIR 3DP1*003 were presented in all individuals. No significant difference between patients and controls was detected. Conclusion KIR genotyping profile does not seem to be associated with Follicular Lymphoma. The results presented in this pilot research represent the first international report about this important clinical entity. Abstract

Genotypic profiles of the Natural killer cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptors (KIR) have been reported to vary among different ethnic groups and this study represents a comparative report on its distribution between two Arabic populations in the Middle East: Lebanese and Palestinians. Our compared population samples included 120 unrelated healthy Lebanese (as per Mahfouz et al.) and a Palestinian population of 105 individuals (as per Norman et al.). All had their DNA typed using Sequence Specific Primer (SSP) technique for the presence of the different KIR loci. Similar to most published data, we observed that the two framework genes 2DL4 and 3DL2 are present in 100% of individuals from both communities, while 2DL2, 2DL3, 2DS1, 2DS2, 2DS3, 2DS5, 3DL1, and 3DS1 were very similar in frequency. However, significant differences were noted in the frequencies of 2DL1 and 2DS4. This report is comparing KIR genotyping distribution in two Arab populations that sheds additional light on the importance of this gene in delineating a possible geographic genetic demarcation among different ethnicities or even different communities among the same or close ethnic groups

Abstract

We evaluated the local recurrence rate (LRR) of bone sarcoma along the core-needle biopsy (CNB) tract in patients who underwent limb Salvage Surgery (LSS) following a diagnostic CNB performed irrespective of the planned surgical incision site and for which surgery did not involve any biopsy tract removal.A retrospective review of 10 pediatric patients diagnosed with bone sarcoma using a computed tomography-guided core-needle biopsy, with evaluation of medical records, pathological specimens and radiological films from the date of diagnosis until the most recent follow-up.None of the patients experienced local recurrence during their follow up, despite the lack of biopsy site resection. CT scans of the involved extremities were negative for any suspicious lesions in all patients up until the most recent follow-up.Our study and review of the literature suggest that the incidence of tumor seeding the CNB tract in bone sarcoma patients is apparently low, and possibly negligible. CNB should be performed through the most direct approach to the tumor, and LSS can be performed safely through the standard approaches without excision of the biopsy tract.

Abstract

Despite major advances in cancer therapeutics, the prognosis for lung cancer patients is still poor and the median survival for patients presenting with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is only 8-10 months. Angiogenesis is an important biological process and a relatively early event during lung cancer pathogenesis. Anti-angiogenic agents are used in treating patients with NSCLC, and their molecular biomarkers are also being assessed to predict response. A better understanding of the biology of angiogenesis in NSCLC may reveal new targets for treating this malignancy.
