Abstract

The degradation of methylparaben (MeP) in water was investigated using a pulsed corona discharge generated in oxygen, above the liquid. A comparison was made between results obtained in semi-batch corona (SBC) configuration (stationary solution, continuous gas flow) and results obtained in a semi-batch corona with recirculation combined with ozonation (SBCR + O3), where the liquid is continuously circulated between a solution reservoir and the plasma reactor and the effluent gas containing ozone is bubbled through the solution in the reservoir. It was found that MeP was completely degraded after 10-15 min of treatment in both configurations. Oxidation by ozone alone, in the absence of plasma, was a slower process. The energy efficiency for MeP removal (Y MeP) and for mineralization (Y TOC) was significantly higher in the SBCR + O3 configuration (Y MeP = 7.1 g/kWh at 90 % MeP removal and Y TOC = 0.41 g/kWh at 50 % total organic carbon (TOC) removal) than in the SBC configuration (Y MeP = 0.6 g/kWh at 90 % MeP removal and Y TOC = 0.11 g/kWh at 50 % TOC removal).

Interbody fusion is commonly performed, but it can lead to adjacent-segment disease. Dynamic posterior stabilization was performed using a total facet arthroplasty system. The total facet arthroplasty system was originally intended to restore the natural motion of the posterior stabilizers, but follow-up studies are lacking due to limited clinical use. We studied the first 14 cases (long-term follow-up) treated with this new device in our clinic. All patients were diagnosed with lumbar stenosis due to hypertrophy of the articular facets on one to three levels (maximum). Disk space was of normal height. The design of this implant allows its use only at levels L3–L4 and L4–L5. We implanted nine patients at the L4–L5 level and four patients at level L3–L4. Postoperative follow-up of the patients was obtained for an average of 3.7 years. All patients reported persistent improvement of symptoms, visual analog scale score, and Oswestry Disability Index score. Functional scores and dynamic radiographic imaging demonstrated the functional efficacy of this new implant, which represents an alternative technique and a new approach to dynamic stabilization of the vertebral column after interventions for spine decompression. The total facet arthroplasty system represents a viable option for dynamic posterior stabilization after spinal decompression. For the observed follow-up, it preserved motion without significant complications or apparent intradisk or adjacent-disk degeneration. Abstract

The oxidative degradation of the pharmaceutical drug diclofenac (DCF) in water was studied using a pulsed corona discharge generated above liquid. It was found that DCF in solution was completely removed after 15 min non-thermal plasma treatment. The mineralization degree of DCF, expressed as the decrease of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), was approximately 50% after 30 min exposure to plasma. A good correlation between the evolution of the Total Carbon and the amount of CO 2 released was observed. The elimination of chlorine from DCF occurs rapidly: over 95% is released as Cl − after 15 min non-thermal plasma treatment, indicating the absence of chlorinated degradation products in the treated solution. Several reaction by-products are identified and based on this a tentative degradation pathway of DCF under plasma conditions is proposed.

Abstract

The decomposition of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution was investigated using a dielectric barrier discharge in coaxial configuration operated in pulsed regime. The MB solution (volume=300 ml, concentration=50 mg/l) contained in a reservoir was circulated by a pump and made to flow as a film over the surface of the inner electrode of the plasma reactor. The best results were obtained when the discharge was operated in oxygen. The conversion of MB reached 95% after 30 min of plasma treatment and the corresponding yield was 57 g/kW h. Increasing the amplitude of the voltage pulses, and implicitly, the power dissipated in the discharge led to faster decomposition of the dye; however, the yield for MB degradation was lower. Better results were obtained for negative polarity of the applied voltage as compared to positive polarity, but after 30 min treatment the conversion had similar values for both cases. The gas flow rate did not influence the decomposition of MB in the range investigated, 300–900 ml/min. The solution flow rate had an effect on the dye degradation only for short treatment times, where a lower flow rate led to improved results, while for long treatment times the conversion was similar for 30 and 90 ml/min. Abstract

Oxidative removal of toluene in a dielectric barrier discharge reactor combined with manganese catalysts downstream was investigated. Toluene input concentration was varied in the range of 415–2227 ppm. The discharge was operated in pulsed mode, with short pulses of 23–35 kV peak voltage. At 7 W average power, toluene conversion was 60%–70%, independent on the toluene input concentration and on the total gas flow rate in the range of 110–330 SCCM (SCCM denotes cubic centimeter per minute at STP). Toluene total oxidation was favored at high residence time of the gas in the discharge zone and low toluene concentration, when the main reaction product was CO2 with selectivities of 80%–85%. The addition of the catalysts led to a 15%–20% increase in toluene conversion with respect to the values obtained in the plasma, due to oxidation with ozone on the catalyst surface. 164. Mechanism of C[sub 2] hydrocarbon formation from methane in a pulsed microwave plasma.

Abstract

Methane dissociation, followed by the formation of C[sub 2] hydrocarbons, in a pulsed microwave discharge in methane was investigated by mass spectrometry and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Long microwave pulses (> 200 µs) are characterized by a pronounced dehydrogenation, but have a disadvantage in the saturation of the methane conversion at relatively low values, due to methane depletion toward the end of the pulse. For shorter pulses, the conversion degree increases approximately linearly as a function of energy input, and a maximum conversion of 90% with 80% selectivity toward acetylene was obtained for 60 µs pulses at 1 kHz repetition frequency. A further decrease of the pulse duration (20 µs) at higher frequency, in order to ensure a similar energy input, resulted in a decrease in conversion and dehydrogenation. The explanation of the effect of the pulse duration is based on information provided by optical emission spectroscopy of active species generated in the discharge. Atomic hydrogen, formed by methane dissociation, was found to play an essential role in methane plasma chemistry. A qualitative estimation of the variation of H atom concentration with operating conditions was done by actinometry, since time-resolved OES provides evidence that atomic hydrogen is mainly formed in the ground state and dissociative excitation can be neglected. In addition to the concentration of atomic hydrogen, the second key parameter is the gas temperature. It was determined from the relative intensity distribution in the rotational structure of the (0,0) C[sub 2] Swan band and of the (2,2) H[sub 2] Fulcher-α band. Gas temperatures between 1500 and 2500 K were determined for the present discharge conditions. The hydrogen abstraction by hydrogen atoms, favored at high temperature, is responsible for the high methane conversion and low energy requirement achieved (9-10 eV/molecule) and for the distribution of the reaction products. Abstract

The methane decomposition and the formation of C[sub 2] hydrocarbons, in particular acetylene, in a microwave plasma were studied. It was found that pulsing the discharge presents major advantages over the cw operation. The effect of the operating parameters, including pressure (15-65 mbar), flow rate (33-190 sccm), and discharge power (16-81 W) was investigated, with the aim to improve the efficiency for methane conversion and to reduce the energy requirement for the formation of acetylene. Maximum values of the methane conversion degree over 90% were obtained. As a function of the discharge conditions, acetylene can become the main reaction product, with 80% selectivity. The minimum energy requirement for methane conversion was approximately 7 eV/molecule and for acetylene formation 20 eV/molecule. The results show that active species generated in the plasma contribute to the methane dissociation and influence the product distribution. The correlation between the dehydrogenation and the gas temperature supports the view of thermally activated neutral-neutral reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cyber physical systems (CPSs) can be found nowadays in various fields of activity. The increased interest for these systems as evidenced by the large number of applications led to complex research regarding the most suitable methods for design and development. A promising solution for specification, visualization, and documentation of CPSs uses the Object Management Group (OMG) unified modeling language (UML). UML models allow an intuitive approach for embedded systems design, helping end-users to specify the requirements. However, the UML models are represented in an informal language. Therefore, it is difficult to verify the correctness and completeness of a system design. The object constraint language (OCL) was defined to add constraints to UML, but it is deficient in strict notations of mathematics and logic that permits rigorous analysis and reasoning about the specifications. In this paper, we investigated how CPS applications modeled using UML deployment diagrams could be formally expressed and verified. We used Z language constructs and prototype verification system (PVS) as formal verification tools. Considering some relevant case studies presented in the literature, we investigated the opportunity of using this approach for validation of static properties in CPS UML models.

Abstract

A pulsed dielectric barrier discharge was used for the decomposition of enalapril, its metabolite, enalaprilat, its degradation by-product, diketopiperazine, aswellastheircombination, in aqueous solution. The discharge was generated at the interface between gas and the solution which flows as a film on the surface of the inner electrode of the plasma reactor. The degradation mechanism of the studied compounds and the temporal evolution of the reaction intermediates were established from LC‐MS analysis. A wide variety of degradation by-products were formed; at least six new derivatives, not mentioned in literature, were observed. However, most of these by-products were subsequently degraded to small molecules. The mineralization degree, determined from TOC and COD measurements, was approximately 40%.

Abstract

The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) was designed and built to enhance the capabilities of the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While aimed at providing electron identification and triggering, the TRD also contributes significantly to the track reconstruction and calibration in the central barrel of ALICE. In this paper the design, construction, operation, and performance of this detector are discussed. A pion rejection factor of up to 410 is achieved at a momentum of 1 GeV/c in p-Pb collisions and the resolution at high transverse momentum improves by about 40% when including the TRD information in track reconstruction. The triggering capability is demonstrated both for jet, light nuclei, and electron selection.

Abstract

In order to make the energy resulted from renewable resources compatible with the main grid, different electromechanical converters and inverters are used. Harmonics generated by variable frequency drives based on electronic inverters can have a negative impact on the performance of the entire electrical distribution system, resulting in unpleasant and even dangerous effects. In this paper a new solution for this problem is presented, based on using a controlled planetary differential gear placed between the mechanical source of energy and the permanent magnet generator. For a connection between Romania and the Republic of Moldova grids with different frequencies and phases, the global system can be seen as a sustainable transnational transactive environment platform with multiple providers and users.

Abstract

In wireless networks, the design of radio resource sharing mechanisms is complicated by the complex interference constraints among the various links. In their seminal paper (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control, vol. 37, no. 12, pp. 1936–1948), Tassiulas and Ephremides introduced Maximum Weighted Scheduling, a centralized resource sharing algorithm, and proved its optimality. Since then, there have been extensive research efforts to devise distributed implementations of this algorithm. Recently, distributed adaptive CSMA scheduling schemes have been proposed and shown to be optimal, without the need of message passing among transmitters. However, their analysis relies on the assumption that interference can be accurately modeled by a simple interference graph. In this paper, we consider the more realistic and challenging signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) interference model. We present distributed scheduling algorithms that: 1) are optimal under the SINR interference model; and 2) do not require any message passing. These algorithms are based on a combination of a simple and efficient power allocation strategy referred to as Power Packing and randomization techniques. The optimality of our algorithms is illustrated in various traffic scenarios using numerical experiments.

Abstract

In this thesis we address the multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem with stochastic rewards and correlated arms. Particularly, we investigate the case when the expected rewards are a Lipschitz function of the arm, and the learning to rank problem, as viewed from a MAB perspective. For the former, we derive a problem specific lower bound and propose both an asymptotically optimal algorithm (OSLB) and a (pareto)optimal, algorithm (POSLB). For the latter, we construct the regret lower bound and determine its closed form for some particular settings, as well as propose two asymptotically optimal algorithms PIE and PIE-C. For all algorithms mentioned above, we present performance analysis in the form of theoretical regret guarantees as well as numerical evaluation on artificial datasets as well as real-world datasets, in the case of PIE and PIE-C. Abstract

A pulsed corona discharge in multiwire-plate geometry, generated above water was studied for the removal of organic compounds in liquids. The degradation of methylene blue (MB) and the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were investigated. The MB solution was rapidly decolorized, evidencing the degradation of the dye after approximately 10 min plasma treatment. Nitrate, formate, sulphate and chlorine ions have been detected in the treated solution, explaining partly the change in the solution properties with plasma exposure, i.e. increase of electrical conductivity and decrease of pH. It was found that the concentration of H2O2 generated in water increased with plasma exposure time, reaching 200 mg/L after 30 min treatment. In the MB solution less hydrogen peroxide was detected, suggesting reactions with the dye and its degradation products. The addition of FeCl2 catalyst had a slight favorable effect on methylene blue degradation due to Fenton’s reaction. It was observed that MB and H2O2 concentrations continue to decrease after the plasma treatment was stopped, suggesting that active species which accumulate in the solution may react post-plasma with methylene blue and its degradation products.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis is a well defined epileptic syndromic entity, especially in adults. In pediatric population, this syndrome has been less well studied, probable because of the particular electroclinical features of temporal seizures in children. This article reviews evidence for and against the causal relationship between hippocampal sclerosis and mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and offer some insights in the etiology and pathogenesis of hippocampal sclerosis.

Abstract

Silver colloids have been prepared by reducing AgNO3 in aqueous solution and embeded in alumina following a sol–gel procedure in the presence of Pluronic 84 ((EO)19(PO)39(EO)19), as surfactant. Plasma-catalytic experiments aimed at the mineralization of toluene showed that the selectivity to CO2 was significantly increased in the presence of Ag catalysts compared with results obtained using the plasma alone. In-situ studies of the ozone interaction with catalysts provide an insight into the nature of the active sites of supported silver colloids for mineralization reactions. It is noticeable that when ozone is chemisorbed on embedded Ag colloidal catalysts no change in the silver oxidation state or size is found. The population of the chemisorbed species is higher at lower temperatures, where the non-selective decomposition of ozone is smaller. The catalysts exhibit high stability, preserving the structural and textural properties after the catalytic tests, that is indeed very important in the presence of ozone.

Abstract

The decomposition of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution was investigated using a pulsed corona discharge. The discharge was ignited in the gas bubbled in the solution through several needle electrodes. The influence of treatment time, volume of the treated solution and initial concentration of the dye in solution on MB degradation was studied. The effect of the nature of the gas introduced was also investigated. For the same energy input, MB conversion increased in the order air < argon < oxygen. When using oxygen, the decomposition of MB exceeded 95% after ~20 min plasma treatment. Higher efficiency was obtained for higher treated volume and higher initial concentration. At 90% conversion the yield obtained with oxygen was ~5 g/kWh for an initial concentration of 150 mg/l and a treated volume of solution of 100 ml.

Abstract

A prototype Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) with a novel configuration was built and tested. The prototype consists of two individual multiwire proportional chambers (MWPCs) that share a thin common central pad readout electrode. In this way, the TR detection efficiency increases at no penalty in counting speed or in number of readout channels. Measurements with electrons, pions and protons with momentum up to 2 GeV/c show a good position resolution smaller than 200 μ m for tracks with normal incidence and no significant deterioration of the resolution is observed up to a particle flux of 200 kHz / cm 2 . These results open the possibility of constructing detectors for tracking and e / π discrimination even for high counting rate experiments with a reasonable number of layers. The results on position resolution as well as on rate capability of the prototypes are presented.

Abstract

The decomposition of chlorinated volatile organic compounds by non-thermal plasma generated in a dielectric barrier discharge was investigated. As model compounds trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) were chosen. It was found that TCE removal exceeds 95% for input energy densities above 0.2 eV/molecule, regardless of the initial concentration of TCE, in the range 100–750 ppm. On the other hand, DCE was more difficult to decompose, the removal rate reached a maximum of 60% at the highest input energy used. For both investigated compounds the selectivity towards carbon dioxide was significantly influenced by their initial concentration, increasing when low concentrations were used. The gas flow rate had also an effect on CO2 selectivity, which is higher at low flow rate, due to the higher residence time of the gas in the plasma. The best values obtained in these experiments were around 80%.

Abstract

The oxidative decomposition of trichloroethylene (TCE) in dry air was investigated in non-thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, both in the absence and in the presence of gold containing mesoporous silica (GMS) catalysts. In the absence of catalyst, TCE removal reached 100% for average powers dissipated in the plasma above 3 W, for a TCE concentration of 430 ppmv. Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were the major reaction products with CO2 selectivity up to 25% and CO selectivity up to 70%. In the presence of gold containing mesoporous catalysts, the concentrations of CO and CO2 increased as compared to those obtained with plasma alone. The GMS catalysts can dissociate ozone produced in plasma to oxygen radicals that decompose TCE. Among these catalysts, the one containing the least amount of Au (0.5% GMS) showed the best catalytic performance. In the presence of ozone generated in the plasma, isolated gold cations might play a critical role for the catalytic behavior.

Measurements with a 55Fe source and e, π and p of 1.5 GeV/c showed a very good energy, position resolution and a better e / π discrimination compared to the standard structure with a single MWPC. No significant deterioration of the resolutions is observed up to counting rates of 2 × 10 5 particles cm - 2 s - 1 . These results open the possibility of constructing TRDs with a high e / π discrimination and granularity even for high-counting rate experiments with a reasonable number of layers.

Abstract

The degradation of several organic compounds in aqueous solution: methyl yellow (C14H15N3), methyl red (C15H15N3O2), methyl orange (C14H14N3NaO3S), phenol red (C19H14O5S) and methylene blue (C16H18ClN3S), was investigated in a pulsed corona discharge. High voltage pulses of 17 kV amplitude, 24 ns rise time and approximately 200 ns duration (full width at half maximum––FWHM) were applied to an array of six hollow needles. When oxygen was bubbled into the solution through the needle, current pulses of 90 A amplitude were obtained and the average power dissipated in the discharge was 19 W at 100 Hz pulse repetition rate. UV-visible spectra of the aqueous solutions show a significant reduction of the absorbance in the visible range, up to 90%, after plasma treatment, suggesting fragmentation of the compounds. Several aliphatic compounds were identified as oxidation products of methyl yellow, methyl red and methyl orange. For methylene blue and phenol red aromatic reaction products were detected as well.

Abstract

Abatement of trichloroethylene (TCE, 250 ppm in air) was studied in a novel nonthermal plasma (NTP) dielectric barrier discharge reactor with an inner electrode made of sintered metal fibers (SMF). The SMF electrodes modified with TiO2 and MnO2 were observed to be catalytically active. Their efficiency in TCE decomposition was compared with a Cu inner electrode. The SMF electrode modified with MnO2 and TiO2 catalyst effectively destroys TCE due to the synergy between plasma excitation of the TCE molecules and their catalytic oxidation. The latter process was observed to be further enhanced by photocatalysis since TiO2 absorbs the UV light produced by the NTP. These innovative TiO2-modified SMF electrodes were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confirming formation of titania anatase, whereas the emission spectrum of the plasma showed the presence of ultraviolet light.

Abstract

Pharmaceutical compounds became an important class of water pollutants due to their increasing consumption over the last years, as well as due to their persistence in the environment. Since conventional waste water treatment plants are unable to remove certain non-biodegradable pharmaceuticals, advanced oxidation processes was extensively studied for this purpose. Among them, non-thermal plasma was also recently investigated and promising results were obtained. This work reviews the recent research on the oxidative degradation of pharmaceuticals using non-thermal plasma in contact with liquid. As target compounds, several drugs belonging to different therapeutic groups were selected: antibiotics, anticonvulsants, anxiolytics, lipid regulators, vasodilatators, contrast media, antihypertensives and analgesics. It was found that these compounds were removed from water relatively fast, partly degraded, and partly even mineralized. In order to ensure the effluent is environmentally safe it is important to identify the degradation intermediates and to follow their evolution during treatment, which requires complex chemical analysis of the solutions. Based on this analysis, degradation pathways of the investigated pharmaceuticals under plasma conditions were suggested. After sufficient plasma treatment the final organic by-products present in the solutions were mainly small molecules in an advanced oxidation state.

Abstract

In both the current (1981) ILAE Classification of Epileptic Seizures and the recently Proposed Diagnostic Scheme for People with Epilepsy and Epileptic Seizures, typical absence seizures are defined as generalized seizures, implying widespread subcortical and cortical neuronal involvement from onset with impairment of consciousness as the clinical hallmark. Clinical observations from three patients and clinical and experimental data from the literature suggest, however, that: (1) consciousness is retained in many typical absences; (2) the true hallmark of these seizures is arrest of motor initiation due to disturbance of pre-motor area frontal-lobe function; (3) typical absences and partial seizures from these areas may show similar clinical and EEG features and involve the same neuronal circuits. The neuronal system primarily involved in these seizures consists of a relatively limited cortico-thalamo-cortical circuit, including the reticular thalamic nucleus, the thalamocortical relay and the predominantly anterior and mesial frontal cerebral cortex, with the cortex probably acting as the primary driving site. Typical absences thus should not be classified or defined as generalized seizures, particularly since neuropathological and imaging studies increasingly argue for localized structural abnormalities, even in idiopathic or primary generalized epilepsy. These observations further highlight the intrinsic weaknesses of the current classification system for seizures and support further adaptations of the diagnostic system currently under development.

Abstract

The mechanism of C(sub 2) hydrocarbon formation from methane in pulsed microwave plasma and the determination of the decisive factor that control the product distribution are described. The hydrogen abstraction by the hydrogen atoms, favored at high temperatures is shown to be responsible for the high methane conversion and low energy requirement achieved (9-10 eV/molecule) and for the distribution of the reaction products.
