International audience; Mr President of the Republic, Mr Prime Minister, Mr Justice Minister,On the occasion of my first greetings as President of the Constitutional Council, I must assume the responsibility that is mine. Presiding over the Constitutional Council is a heavy responsibility. It is up to us to judge the constitutional regularity of the expression of the general will. Through our control we obstruct, in the name of respect for the law, the democratic expression of the majority and, to have the legitimacy to do so, the institution must be irreproachable in every respect. Our function will be all the more accepted if our functioning is exemplary. It is in the name of this requirement that I am presenting this speech to you, allowing myself a frankness that is undoubtedly unfamiliar to the hushed circles that are ours.; Monsieur le Président de la République, Monsieur le Premier ministre, Monsieur le Garde des Sceaux,À l’occasion de mes premiers vœux en tant que Président du Conseil constitutionnel, je me dois d’assumer la charge qui est la mienne. Présider le Conseil constitutionnel constitue une lourde responsabilité. Il nous appartient de juger de la régularité constitutionnelle de l’expression de la volonté générale. Abstract

International audience; Quand la science du droit ne peut plus décrire de manière cohérente certains phénomènes dans la pratique du droit, c’est que des enjeux de pouvoir dominent. Ce qui est s’impose face à ce qui doit être et l’on quitte le rapport de droit pour embrasser le rapport de pouvoir. Celui-ci renvoie à un rapport de force et c’est, peut-être, ce dernier qui paraît le plus adapté à la description des rapports de systèmes. Telle est la lecture qui, après des années de recherches sur le sujet, me semble devoir s’imposer lorsqu’il est question de rapport de systèmes. L’appréhension cohérente de ces rapports de systèmes ne saurait être entreprise à partir de l’application des normes juridiques, les normes constitutionnelles ou leur interprétation par les juges nationaux étant parfois contradictoires avec les normes internationales et européennes, mais, de manière scientifique, par des conceptions théoriques ou, et c’est ce dernier angle que nous allons éprouver, en termes de pouvoirs, à partir d’un rapport de force. Plus précisément, les rapports qu’entretiennent les juges nationaux avec tout système supranational, comme le système issu de la Convention européenne des droits de l’homme, sont le fruit de choix politiques, et même, idéologique, des juges, certains diraient, toutefois, des choix discrétionnaires, c’est-à-dire couverts par les possibles offerts par les normes, qui résultent d’un équilibre entre, d’une part, une volonté de préserver la Constitution nationale et, d’autre part, une soumission relative aux exigences supranationales liée au risque d’être désavouer par une juridiction supranationale. Cet équilibre semble en effet se dégager de l’attitude des juridictions nationales vis-à-vis des normes supranationales, les normes mobilisées à l’appui de cet équilibre n’étant qu’un prétexte pour parvenir à telle ou telle solution.

159. Sedentary Behavior at Work and Cognitive Functioning: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Background: It is now well-established that sedentarity has a negative impact on the physiological functioning and health of humans, whereas very little is known about the psychological repercussions, especially in cognitive functioning. Yet, studying the cognitive effects of the sedentary lifestyle is particularly relevant in the short term for productivity and in the long term for cognitive health (accelerated aging). This systematic review therefore aims to make an inventory of the potential cognitive effects of sedentarity at the workplace.Methods: Pubmed, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for English-language peer-reviewed articles published between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2017 to identify studies including sedentary behavior and objective measures from cognitive domains (cognitive inhibition, cognitive flexibility, working memory, etc.). To carry out this systematic review, the 3 keywords “Sedentary” and “Cognition” and “Work” (and their derivatives) had to appear in the title or in the summary of the paper.Results: Of the 13 papers that met the inclusion criteria, 9 were short-term interventions, 3 medium-term interventions, and 1 long-term intervention. Nine of them reported non-significant results. Two studies study reported deterioration in cognitive performance. Two reported an improvement in performance in cognitive tasks with one study with overweight adults and the only one study with a long-term intervention. However, these studies intend to reduce sedentary behavior, but do not allow answering the question of the potential cognitive effects of the sedentary lifestyle.Conclusion: These data suggest that sedentary behavior is not associated with changes in cognitive performance in interventions that intend to reduce sedentary behavior. Then, and given the trend toward increased time in sedentary behavior, long-term prospective studies of high methodological quality are recommended to clarify the relationships between sedentary behavior and the cognitive functioning. Our systematic review identifies also the need for retrospective, longitudinal, or epidemiologic studies. It also recognizes the need to standardize methodology for collecting, defining, and reporting sedentary behavior and the need to standardize the cognitive tests used. The relationship between sedentary behavior and cognitive functioning remaining uncertain, further studies are warranted for which 8 recommendations are proposed.

Abstract

Sensorimotor abnormalities are common in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and predictive of functional outcomes, though their neural underpinnings remain poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined both brain activation and functional connectivity during visuomotor behavior in 27 individuals with ASD and 30 typically developing (TD) controls (ages 9–35 years). Participants maintained a constant grip force while receiving visual feedback at three different visual gain levels. Relative to controls, ASD participants showed increased force variability, especially at high gain, and reduced entropy. Brain activation was greater in individuals with ASD than controls in supplementary motor area, bilateral superior parietal lobules, and contralateral middle frontal gyrus at high gain. During motor action, functional connectivity was reduced between parietal‐premotor and parietal‐putamen in individuals with ASD compared to controls. Individuals with ASD also showed greater age‐associated increases in functional connectivity between cerebellum and visual, motor, and prefrontal cortical areas relative to controls. These results indicate that visuomotor deficits in ASD are associated with atypical activation and functional connectivity of posterior parietal, premotor, and striatal circuits involved in translating sensory feedback information into precision motor behaviors, and that functional connectivity of cerebellar–cortical sensorimotor and nonsensorimotor networks show delayed maturation., We used functional MRI to examine brain activation and functional connectivity during visuomotor behavior in individuals with ASD and typically developing controls. Results indicated that atypical sensorimotor behavior in ASD was linked to increased functional activation and decreased task‐dependent functional connectivity throughout the visuomotor network. Our results suggest that atypical modulation of sensory feedback information during precision refinement of ongoing motor behavior contributes to multiple developmental disruptions in affected individuals.

Abstract

Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

Abstract

A search for the exclusive production of the Zc±(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±. The data cover the range from 7 GeV to 19 GeV in the centre-of-mass energy of the photon–nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±)×σγN→Zc±(3900)N/σγN→J/ψN of 3.7×10−3 has been established at the confidence level of 90%. Keywords: COMPASS, Zc(3900), Photoproduction, Tetraquark

Abstract

Exclusive production of ηπ− and η′π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2,4,6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η′π− over ηπ− is found for the L=1,3,5 waves, which carry non-qq¯ quantum numbers. The L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η′π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2 are different.

Abstract

International audience; The recent focus on the bidirectional heart-brain interactions in psychoneurophysiological research has led to a variety of findings suggesting vagal activity is associated with cognition and, possibly, specifically with executive functioning. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide a better understanding of the association between vagally-mediated heart rate variability (HRV) and executive functioning. We included 13 correlational studies. We found a small positive association between vagally-mediated HRV and executive functioning (r = .19, 95% CI .15 to .23, p < .0001) using a quantitative synthesis of existing studies with random-effect models. Conducting meta-regression analyses, we found that vagally-mediated HRV predicts cognitive inhibition and cognitive flexibility more than working memory. In addition to the specific executive function measured, this relationship is moderated by the HRV measurement used, and age. After proposing a theoretical interpretation of the results, we emphasized the need for further research in light of the methodological issues identified in the included studies, and we outline several aspects to consider in future studies.

Abstract

We study the spin-exotic J(PC)=1(-+) amplitude in single-diffractive dissociation of 190 GeV/c pions into pi(-)pi(-)pi(+) using a hydrogen target and confirm the pi(1)(1600) -> rho(770)pi amplitude, which interferes with a nonresonant 1(-+) amplitude. We demonstrate that conflicting conclusions from previous studies on these amplitudes can be attributed to different analysis models and different treatment of the dependence of the amplitudes on the squared four-momentum transfer and we thus reconcile these experimental findings. We study the nonresonant contributions to the pi(-)pi(-)pi(+) final state using pseudodata generated on the basis of a Deck model. Subjecting pseudodata and real data to the same partial-wave analysis, we find good agreement concerning the spectral shape and its dependence on the squared four-momentum transfer for the J(PC)=1(-+) amplitude and also for amplitudes with other J(PC) quantum numbers. We investigate for the first time the amplitude of the pi(-)pi(+) subsystem with J(PC)=1(--) in the 3 pi amplitude with J(PC)=1(-+) employing the novel freed-isobar analysis scheme. We reveal this pi(-)pi(+) amplitude to be dominated by the rho(770) for both the pi(1)(1600) and the nonresonant contribution. These findings largely confirm the underlying assumptions for the isobar model used in all previous partial-wave analyses addressing the J(PC)=1(-+) amplitude.

Abstract

Based on the observation of sizeable target-transverse-spin asymmetries in single-hadron and hadron-pair production in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS), the chiral-odd transversity quark distribution functions $h_1^q$ are nowadays well established. Several possible channels to access these functions were originally proposed. One candidate is the measurement of the polarisation of $\Lambda$ hyperons produced in SIDIS off transversely polarised nucleons, where the transverse polarisation of the struck quark might be transferred to the final-state hyperon. In this article, we present the COMPASS results on the transversity-induced polarisation of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons produced in SIDIS off transversely polarised protons. Within the experimental uncertainties, no significant deviation from zero was observed. The results are discussed in the context of different models taking into account previous experimental results on $h_1^u$ and $h_1^d$., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Quelle est aujourd’hui la situation du monopole de la violence legitime prete a l’Etat ? Les auteur∙es des quatre contributions reunies ici s’inscrivent dans une approche de sociologie de l’international pour decrire, a partir d’enquetes empiriques precises, certaines politiques non seulement de mise en œuvre mais aussi de prevention de la violence : lutte contre le financement de la criminalite et du terrorisme, peine de mort aux Etats-Unis, guerre en Afghanistan, politiques de sorties de conflits. Plus precisement, ils et elles interrogent les relations, tant de collusion que de collision, qui se tissent entre les differents espaces sociaux contribuant au gouvernement de cette violence legitime. Ils et elles explorent ainsi les interactions et interdependances entre administrations nationales ou internationales, secteurs bancaire, pharmaceutique, universitaire, ONG, et montrent comment, dans ces configurations complexes, se faconne le role de l’Etat et se consolident des (re)definitions de la violence (il)legitime.

Abstract

Growing evidence suggests that heart-brain interactions play a role in several cognitive processes, including executive functions (Forte, Favieri, & Casagrande, 2019; Thayer, Hansen, Saus-Rose, & Johnsen, 2009). Heart rate variability (HRV), indexing autonomic modulation of the heart rate (Shaffer, McCraty, & Zerr, 2014), seems to be associated with cognitive inhibition (Ottaviani et al., 2019). Yet, the relation between HRV and cognitive inhibition is not always observed (e.g., Xing, Lü, & Wang, 2020). One possible explanation is that cognitive inhibition tasks vary in cognitive demands and difficulty. It has been proposed that HRV is particularly associated with performance on goal-directed demanding tasks involving adaptive psychological regulation), whereas less demanding tasks seems to not be associated with HRV (Park, Vasey, Bavel, & Thayer, 2014). The purpose of the present study was to test the relationship between HRV and cognitive inhibition by varying the task demands. A secondary aims is to determine whether a breathing exercise that increases heart rate variability also improves inhibitory performance.

Abstract

International audience; Distinguishing among similar events is indeed crucial to memory. In a dangerous context, this ability may be less essential, whereas in a secure context it may provide an adaptative advantage notably in social situations. Vagal activity as a marker of the individual's adaptation in social engagement contexts might predict the ability to discriminate highly similar memories in an unthreatening context. The present study aims to test the relation between vagal activity and memory discrimination by manipulating the visual distinctiveness of stimuli (high vs. low) in an ecological memory discrimination task with humanoid characters. It was expected that vagal activity support adaptive self-regulatory processes which may be needed only when the memory discrimination is challenging (low distinctiveness between true memory and lure). In a study phase, multiple realistic fictional humanoid characters performed the same action on different objects. The characters could be very similar or very distinct one to each other. Then, during a test phase, the participants had to discriminate whether a displayed character on the screen was exactly matched the one performing the given action on a specific object in the study phase (target). Vagal activity was assessed in undergraduate students (n = 40) before the study phase. Higher vagal activity predicted better memory discrimination performance specifically when the distinctiveness between the lure and target was low. These data extend previous work on vagal activity and memory suggesting that heart-brain interactions represent an adaptive psychophysiological mechanism underlying memory discrimination specifically when it is challenging in an unthreatening context.

Abstract

IntroductionThere has been a growing interest towards cognitive-training programmes to improve cognition and prevent cognitive impairment despite discrepant findings. Physical activity has been recognised in maintaining or improving cognitive ability. Based on a psychoneurophysiological approach, physiological indexes should partly determine neuronal dynamics and influence cognition as any effects of cognitive training. This study’s primary aim was to examine if improved physiological indexes predict improved cognitive variables in the context of a clinical intervention programme for type 2 diabetes (T2D).Method and analysisPhyCog will be a 22-week randomised controlled trial comparing cognitive performance between three arms: (1) physical activity (1 month), a 15-day wash-out, then cognitive training (1 month), (2) cognitive training (1 month), a 15-day wash-out and physical activity (1 month), and (3) an active breathing condition (psychoeducation and resonance frequency breathing for 1 month), then a 15-day wash-out, and combined physical activity and cognitive training (1 month), allowing to determine the most effective intervention to prevent cognitive impairment associated with T2D. All participants will be observed for 3 months following the intervention. The study will include a total of 81 patients with T2D.Cognitive performance and physiological variables will be assessed at baseline (week 0—W0), during the washout (W5, 72–96 hours after week 4), at the end of the intervention (W10), and at the end of the follow-up (W22). The main variables of interest will be executive function, memory and attention. Physiological testing will involve allostatic load such as heart rate variability, microcirculation, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels. Sociodemographic and body composition will also be a consideration. Assessors will all be blinded to outcomes. To test the primary hypothesis, the relationship between improvement in physiological variables and improvement in cognitive variables (executive, memory and attention) will be collected.Ethics and disseminationThis protocol was approved by the Est III French Ethics Committee (2020-A03228-31). Results will be published in peer-reviewed journals.Trial registration numberNCT04915339.

Abstract

Since Darwin's theory of evolution, adaptationism is frequently invoked to explain cognition and cultural processes. Adaptationism can be described as a prescriptive view, as phenotypes that do not optimize fitness should not be selected by natural selection. From an epistemological perspective, the principle of a prescriptive definition of adaptation seems incompatible with recent advances in epigenetics, evolutionary developmental biology, ethology, and genomics. From these challenges, a proscriptive view of adaptation has emerged, postulating that phenotypes that are not deleterious will be evolutionary maintained. In this epistemological investigation, we examine how the shift from adaptationism to a proscriptive view changes our view of cognition and culture. We argue that, while adaptationism leads to cognitivism and a view of culture as strategies to optimize overall fitness, the proscriptive definition favors embodied theories of cognition and a view of culture as the cumulative diffusion of behaviors allowed by the constraints of reproduction.

Abstract

Cette intervention a pour but de demontrer que : – la sedentarite tue ; – nous ne sommes sedentaires que et uniquement au travail ; – la sedentarite est un risque professionnel a part entiere. Nous proposons un rappel historique sur les benefices de l’activite physique, des fameuses 30 minutes d’activite physique par jour aux etudes qui individualisent clairement l’effet de l’activite physique et l’effet de la sedentarite. Pour rappel, les activites sedentaires (« sedentary behavior » en anglais) consistent a rester assis ou allonge, sans dormir, et en faisant une activite engendrant une depense energetique inferieure a 1,5 MET (donc typiquement une activite professionnelle en secteur tertiaire). Nous rappelons aussi qu’il n’y a pas de seuil officiel au-dela duquel une personne serait qualifiee de « sedentaire » (pour qualifier l’etat de la personne et non son activite au temps t) et qu’il y aurait besoin d’un mot pour qualifier cet etat - « sedentariness » a ete propose. On peut donc tout a fait etre sedentaire une grosse partie de la journee et etre sportif de haut niveau (profil du cadre administratif qui reste assis au travail mais qui va s’entrainer pour le marathon apres le travail) ou au contraire etre non sedentaire mais ne pas faire d’activite physique (etre debout la plupart de la journee au travail sans faire d’activite physique). De facon interessante, ces deux profils ont des mortalites similaires. Une facon d’ameliorer la sante facilement serait de limiter les temps sedentaires. Puis nous citons les grandes etudes qui ont demontre, via des actimetres portes en continu sur plusieurs jours et sur de grandes cohortes, que nous ne sommes sedentaires que et uniquement qu’au travail. Nous ne sommes pas sedentaires dans notre vie de loisirs. Puis nous citons les etudes observationnelles qui demontrent l’augmentation de mortalite directement liee a la sedentarite au travail. En consequence la sedentarite au travail est un risque professionnel a part entiere, et doit figurer dans le document unique d’evaluation des risques professionnels recenses par l’employeur. Nous abordons ensuite les etudes interventionnelles visant a lutter contre la sedentarite au travail (sans augmenter l’activite physique sinon cela reviendrait a etudier les benefices de l’activite physique), avec des resultats majeurs obtenus via des etudes randomisees controlees … en laboratoire - les etudes interventionnelles seront l’un des principaux axes de recherche des prochaines decennies. Nous citons aussi les benefices economiques pour les employeurs d’avoir des salaries en bonne sante (concept gagnant–gagnant).

Abstract

A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH3) targets is presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year 2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a 160 GeV/c muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about four the overall statistics with respect to the previously published data taken in the year 2007. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation.

Abstract

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS longitudinally polarised muon beam at 160 GeV/c and a 6LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations cos⁡ϕh, cos⁡2ϕh and sin⁡ϕh were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables x, z or pTh and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the cos⁡ϕh and cos⁡2ϕh modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Abstract

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons ω and ϕ is measured with a 190 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable xF of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on xF and on the invariant mass MpV of the system formed by fast proton pfast and vector meson V is discussed in terms of diffractive production of pfastV resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element ρ00 of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on xF and on MpV are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to ω production which are absent in the case of the ϕ meson. Removing the low-mass MpV resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of xF.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The disease caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has produced one of the most dramatic health crises, impacting humans’ daily lives worldwide. Social distancing and lockdown measures have limited everyone’s daily activities and have likely also affected children’s physical activity. AIM: To investigate physical activity and electronics use during COVID-19 social distancing in children from the city of Poá, São Paulo. METHOD: Data from 28 children were obtained on two occasions: pre-pandemic and during the pandemic. To further examine possible changes in physical activity, data from another sample of 40 children were obtained during the pandemic. From both cohorts, anthropometric information and play, television, electronics, and sleep time expenditures were obtained using a questionnaire. RESULTS: Results from the first cohort showed similar time spent engaged in playful activities and sleeping before and during the pandemic. Although hours spent watching television remained constant, a dramatic increase in the overall electronics time expenditure was observed during the pandemic period. CONCLUSION: Although the children maintained their playtime while social distancing, an increase in the time spent using electronic devices was observed, possibly due to the characteristics of the social distancing implemented in Brazil, as well as the characteristics of the children’s neighborhood.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Abnormalities in sensorimotor behavior are present in the majority of individuals with ASD and associated with core symptoms. Cortico-cerebellar networks that control sensorimotor behavior have been implicated in ASD, but little is known about their function during sensorimotor actions. The purpose of this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was to examine cortical-cerebellar function during feedback-guided motor behavior in ASD. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Individuals with ASD (11-30 years; N = 18) and age-matched controls (N = 15) completed a visuomotor task of feedback-guided precision gripping during fMRI. Participants pressed with their right thumb and forefinger on a force transducer while viewing a green FORCE bar on a screen that moved upwards with increased force toward a fixed white TARGET bar. Individuals were instructed to maintain the FORCE bar at the level of the TARGET bar for 24 seconds. Target force levels were set at 20% and 60% of each participant’s maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Force variability was characterized as the coefficient of variation (i.e., standard deviation of the force time series / mean force output; CoV). RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Mean force did not differ between groups indicating participants were able to follow task demands. Participants with ASD showed increased force variability (F(1,30) = 5.214, p = 0.03) at both 20% (d = .45) and 60% (d = .77) MVC compared to controls. Compared to controls, individuals with ASD showed decreased activation in left angular gyrus during the visuomotor task compared to rest (AG; maximum t = 4.31). Individuals with ASD also showed greater visuomotor activation compared to controls in ipsilateral ventral M1, extending anteriorly into posterior ventral pre-motor cortex (PMv; maximum t = −4.06, cluster size = 38 voxels). This difference reflected the finding that control participants showed a selective deactivation of ipsilateral M1/PMv during visuomotor behavior, whereas individuals with ASD did not show this pattern. A significant group x force interaction was observed for contralateral Crus I activation (maximum t = −2.42) that was driven by an increase in activity during 60% compared to 20% MVC in control participants, while individuals with ASD showed no change in Crus I activation between force levels. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Increased force variability in individuals with ASD suggests impaired processing of sensory feedback to guide precision motor behaviors. Individuals with ASD did not show deactivation of right motor cortex during visuomotor behavior relative to rest, suggesting reduced ability to selectively modulate motor cortical output. Reduced activation in left AG may reflect an inability to integrate visual, haptic, and proprioceptive inputs to reactively adjust ongoing motor output. Failure to show force-dependent scaling of Crus I in ASD suggests lateral cerebellar circuits do not adapt sensory prediction and error processes to maintain precision motor output during more demanding conditions. Together, our results demonstrate multiple cortical-cerebellar mechanisms associated with sensorimotor imprecision in ASD.

Abstract

Human–wildlife conflict is becoming a serious threat for both wildlife conservation and human well-being. Its main representations are livestock predation and crop raiding. This chapter examines the problem of crop raiding by wildlife and its socio-economic implications around Pendjari Biosphere Reserve in northern Benin. Data were collected in 2017 through field observations, semi-structured interviews, and a questionnaire survey of 209 farmers of the surrounding villages of the reserve, and 98% of them reported losses of crop every year due to wildlife. Crops with the highest degree of destruction are cotton, maize, millet, and sorghum, and the wild animals responsible for this are mainly baboon, warthog, and elephant. Crop raiding causes, for an average farmer, an annual financial loss ranging from $94.64 in farms of sorghum to $311.8 in farms of cotton. Compared to the annual minimum salary in Benin, these numbers are considerable. Farmers try to manage the impacts of crop raiding with various mitigation measures such as guarding, but the heavy toll of crop raiding and the low level of effectiveness of such measures clearly reveal the vulnerability of agricultural households bordering protected areas.

Abstract

Introduction There has been a growing interest towards cognitive-training programmes to improve cognition and prevent cognitive impairment despite discrepant findings. Physical activity has been recognised in maintaining or improving cognitive ability. Based on a psychoneurophysiological approach, physiological indexes should partly determine neuronal dynamics and influence cognition as any effects of cognitive training. This study’s primary aim was to examine if improved physiological indexes predict improved cognitive variables in the context of a clinical intervention programme for type 2 diabetes (T2D).Method and analysis PhyCog will be a 22-week randomised controlled trial comparing cognitive performance between three arms: (1) physical activity (1 month), a 15-day wash-out, then cognitive training (1 month), (2) cognitive training (1 month), a 15-day wash-out and physical activity (1 month), and (3) an active breathing condition (psychoeducation and resonance frequency breathing for 1 month), then a 15-day wash-out, and combined physical activity and cognitive training (1 month), allowing to determine the most effective intervention to prevent cognitive impairment associated with T2D. All participants will be observed for 3 months following the intervention. The study will include a total of 81 patients with T2D.Cognitive performance and physiological variables will be assessed at baseline (week 0—W0), during the washout (W5, 72–96 hours after week 4), at the end of the intervention (W10), and at the end of the follow-up (W22). The main variables of interest will be executive function, memory and attention. Physiological testing will involve allostatic load such as heart rate variability, microcirculation, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels. Sociodemographic and body composition will also be a consideration. Assessors will all be blinded to outcomes.
