Highly porous three-dimensional biodegradable scaffolds was obtained from beta-tricalcium phosphate-hydroxyapatite bioceramic (BCP), PCL, and Angiotensin-(1-7). We used the solvent casting and particulate leaching methods (SC/PL). The processed scaffolds were characterized by X-ray microtomography (µ-CT). Biocompatibility tests in vitro were performed during three and seven days using MTT and Alkaline Phosphatase Activity (APA) assays. Both the MTT activity and APA were evaluated using a one-way ANOVA test. The µ-CT results showed that the increase of the PCL:BCP weight ratio leads to structures with lower pore sizes. The pore interconnectivity of the processed scaffolds was evaluated in terms of the fragmentation index (FI). We observed that the obtained composites present poorly connected structures, with close values of FI. However, as the polymer phase is almost transparent to the X-rays, it was not taken into consideration in the µ-CT tests. The MTT activity assay revealed that scaffolds obtained with and without Angiotensin-(1-7) present mild and moderate cytotoxic effects, respectively. The APA assay showed that the rat osteoblasts, when in contact for three days with the PCL composites, presented an APA similar to that observed for the control cells. Nevertheless, for an incubation time of seven days we observed a remarkable decrease in the alkaline phosphatase activity. In conclusion, using the solvent casting and salt leaching method we obtained 3D porous that are composites of PCL, BC and Ang-(1-7), which have suitable shapes for the bone defects, a high porosity and interconnect pores. Furthermore, the viability in vitro showed that the scaffolds have potential for drug delivery system and could be used in future in vivo tests. Assim, optou-se por utilizar neste estudo dois biomateriais largamente utilizados na engenharia de tecido ósseo, a policaprolactona (PCL) e cerâmica bifásica (BCP). We present the case of a 5 year old asmathic girl admitted to the hospital for acute non traumatic edema and crepitus of the face, neck and upper thorax. Thoracic x-ray (not shown) and thoracic and neck CT were performed, showing extensive subcutaneous and mediastinal enfisema. These are rare complications of asthma. The imaging features are described.

We present a case of a four year-old child with a second episode of iron deficiency anaemia. Following fever, cough and hemoptysis a chest X-ray and chest CT were performed. Bilateral and patchy areas of ground glass and consolidation were noted in the setting of intrapulmonary hemorrhage. The final diagnosis was idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis.

We present a case of an 11 year old girl in whom an x-ray of the vertebral column was performed to investigate back pain. Spine x-ray showed spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis at L5-S1. Spondylolylis is one of the most common causes of back pain in older children and adolescents. The diagnosis is usually made by x-ray and/or CT.

We present a case of a 15-year-old boy in whom an x-ray of the vertebral column was performed to investigate dorsal hipercyphosis. The exam showed partial block vertebrae in D8-D9. Block vertebrae may be congenital or acquired, partial or complete. Most of the times it is an incidental x-ray finding.

We present a case of a 17-year-old adolescent with a painless hard palpable mass in the left supraclavicular fossa. Thoracic x-ray revealed a left cervical rib. A normal variant of the ribs must be considered in the differential diagnosis of a supraclavicular mass. In most cases x-ray is sufficient for the diagnosis.

A 14 year-old boy presented a two months’ history of left knee pain. Following X-ray findings, MRI of the knee was performed. Knee MRI findings lead to the diagnosis of osteochondritis dissecans. This disorder affects mainly male adolescents, and may involve knee, elbow or ankle joints. It is better evaluated by MRI.

INTRODUÇÃO: A colonografia por TC (CTC) tem um papel diagnóstico controverso. Objectivos: Determinação da eficácia e da experiência dos pacientes com a CTC comparando com a colonoscopia óptica (CO). Métodos: Estudo prospectivo, cego para os avaliadores, com recrutamento de 100 pacientes com indicação para CO, que foram submetidos a CTC prévia. Resultados: Excluídos 6 pacientes por impossibilidade de realização da CTC ou da CO. A sensibilidade (S) e a especificidade (E) da CTC na detecção de pacientes com pólipos ≥10 mm foi 57% (intervalo de confiança [CI] de 95%, 12-86%) e 96% (IC95%, 43-63%); pólipos no global S = 49% (IC95%, 12-86%) e E = 67% (IC95%; 57-77%); entre 6-9 mm S = 31% (IC95%, 6-56%) e E = 80% (IC95%, 71-89%) e ≤ 5 mm S = 18% (IC95%, 7-31%) e E = 88% (IC95%, 71-89%). A CTC não detectou 3 lesões planas e 1 dos 2 tumores observados na CO; 56% dos pacientes preferiram a CTC. Conclusões: Neste estudo, a CTC mostrou sensibilidade insatisfatória para pólipos, apesar de melhor quando de dimensões significativas. A especificidade para pólipos foi elevada. Salientam-se as falhas para cancro e lesões planas. Os pacientes manifestaram preferência pela CTC. BACKGROUND: CT colonography (CTC) has a controversial diagnostic role in the diagnosis of colorectal lesions. aims: In this study we prospectively assess the accuracy and patient experience with CTC compared with optical colonoscopy (OC) in a evaluator-blinded study of 100 patients referred for colonoscopy who previously performed CTC. results: Six patients were excluded due to impossibility to perform CTC or OC. Sensitivity (S) and specificity (E) of CTC for detecting polyps ≥10 mm was 57% (95% confidence interval [IC], 12-86%) and 96% (95%CI, 43-63%); overall polyps S = 49% (95%CI, 12-86%) and E = 67% (95%CI; 57-77%); between 6-9 mm S = 31% (95%CI, 6-56%) and E = 80% (IC95%, 71-89%); ≤ 5 mm S = 18% (95%CI, 7-31%) and E = 88% (95%CI, 71-89%). CTC missed 3 flat lesions and 1of the 2 cancers detected on OC. 56% patients expressed preference for CTC. Conclusions: In this study, overall estimated sensitivity of CTC was inadequate to detect polyps for polyps, although it was better in the detection of polyps with significant dimensions. Estimated specificity of CTC was high for polyps. CTC had a relevant number of missed flat lesion and cancer. Patients preferred CTC over OC.

The end-product of the electrospinning process is typically a randomly aligned fiber mesh or membrane. This is a result of the electric field generated between the drop of polymer solution at the needle and the collector. The developed electric field causes the stretching of the fibers and their random deposition. By judicious selection of the collector architecture, it is thus possible to develop other morphologies on the nanofiber meshes. The aim of this work is to prepare fiber meshes using various patterned collectors with specific dimensions and designs and to evaluate how those patterns can affect the properties of the meshes relevant to biomedical applications. This study aims at verifying whether it is possible to control the architecture of the fiber meshes by tailoring the geometry of the collector. Three different metallic collector topographies are used to test this hypothesis. Electrospun nonwoven patterned meshes of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and poly(ε-capro-lactone) (PCL) were successfully prepared. Those fiber meshes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both mechanical properties of the meshes and cell contacting experiments were performed to test the effect of the produced patterns over the properties of the meshes relevant for biomedical applications. The present study will evaluate cell adhesion sensitivity to the patterns generated and the effect of those patterns on the tensile properties of the fiber meshes.

Nos últimos anos, a Embrapa Arroz Feijão tem recebido inúmeras indagações por carta, telefone, em palestras etc. sobre a utilização do Nim na produção animal, como complemento da dieta, atuando em especial, no controle dos endo e ectoparasitas em ruminantes devido a descoberta do azadiractin, que está presente nas folhas, frutos e sementes do Nim. As verminoses podem ser consideradas um dos principais problemas que afetam ovinos, sendo mais crítica nos animais em crescimento. Dependendo do grau de infestação, os parasitas provocam perda corporal, e no crescimento e qualidade da lã, chegando a causar mortalidade; nos animais em crescimento. Pode também comprometer a produção futura. Este trabalho esta sendo desenvolvido como parte de tese de mestrado na Universidade de Brasília (UnB) em parceria com a Embrapa Arroz e Feijão, com o intuito de avaliar a performance dos ovinos submetidos ao tratamentos com o Nim na ração. A Região do Cerrado brasileiro é produtiva após a correção da fertilidade natural dos seus solos. Geralmente, apresentam baixas concentrações de fósforo, cálcio, magnésio e zinco dentre outros. O teor de matéria orgânica é baixo, com baixas soma e saturação de bases. Também apresentam baixo pH e altos teores de alumínio trocável e algumas vezes altos teores de ferro e manganês. Contudo, a produção das culturas não depende apenas da correção da fertilidade do solo, mas de um conjunto de técnicas e práticas culturais que levam o exercício da agricultura ao nível da sustentabilidade. A finalidade deste trabalho é discutir os problemas dos solos de cerrados e apresentar algumas alternativas de manejo para melhor uso do seu potencial produtivo.
