Land reclamation of previously mined regions has been incorporated in the mining process as awareness of environmental protection has grown. In this study, we used the open-pit coal mine Oslomej in R. N. Macedonia to demonstrate the activities related to the monitoring process of the study area. We combined the Google Earth Engine (GEE) computing platform with the Landsat time-series data, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Random Forest (RF) algorithm, and the LandTrendr algorithm to monitor the mining impacts, land reclamation, and the solar farm growth of the coalfield region between 1984 and 2021. The data from the sequential Landsat archive that was used to construct the spatiotemporal variability of the NDVI over the Oslomej mine site (1984-2021) and the pixel-based trajectories from the LandTrendr algorithm were used to achieve accurate measurements and analysis of vegetation disturbances. The different land use/land cover (LULC) classes herbaceous, water, mine, bare land, and solar farm in the Oslomej coalfield area were identified, and the effects of LULC changes on the mining environment were discussed. The RF classification algorithm was capable of separating these LULC classes with accuracies exceeding 90 %. We also validated our results using random sample points, field knowledge, imagery, and Google Earth. Our methodology, which is based on GEE, effectively captured information on mining, reclamation, and solar farm change, providing annual data (maps and change attributes) that can help local planners, policymakers, and environmentalists to better understand environmental influences connected to the ongoing conversion of the mining areas. High-intensity longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mining of super-thick coal seam in high stress conditions often leads to significant movement and failure of overburden. The competent roof above the super-thick coal seam is easy to form large unstable structures, and the breaking and movement of the roof strata often induce high weighting strength and large dynamic disasters which severely affect the mine safety. The key to control the behavior of competent roof is to understand the fracturing law of the roof strata. In this paper, a case study based on microseismic (MS) monitoring was performed at LW8309 working face in Tongxin coal mine, where super-thick coal seam under competent sandstone roof in high stress conditions was mined by LTCC method. The spatial distribution characteristics of MS events were studied and four impact zones in the horizontal direction and 'four-zones' in the vertical direction were identified. Multifractal analysis of MS events was carried out to study the multifractal characteristics of the fracturing of competent overburden. In addition, a large and small periodic law of fracturing of competent roof was revealed from the temporal distribution of MS events and on-site monitoring of hydraulic support pressure. A key stratum (KS) structural model was then proposed to explain the strong behaviors of competent strata during high-intensity mining. The research results are of great significance for safe and efficient mining of super-thick coal seam under competent roof in high stress conditions. Although many approaches have been proposed for flood risk assessment in urban areas, an equivalent methodology for remote mine sites with poor hydrological data records is still needed. This paper provides a fuzzy methodology based on calculating the hydrological return period discharge and the resistance-load theory for embankment failure risk assessment of an existing drainage storage system (lake) at the Golgohar mine site. The uncertainty of the two uncertain components, load and resistance, were endowed with triangular fuzzy numbers (TFNs) describing possible values the two components may have. First, based on a comparison of two consecutive Sentinel-2A images and the model water volume, a new manual storm water management model (SWMM) calibration technique was introduced. Then, three well-known synthetic rainfall hyetograph generation methods based on a single point of the rainfall curve were input into the calibrated SWMM model. Second, the BRCH-J model was used to calculate the maximum water level in the lake if an embankment breach occurs in two scenarios, with an unprotected and a fully riprap-protected downstream face. Afterward, the SWMM and BRCH-J outputs were used to define the TFN parameters representing the load (surface flow) and resistance (lake capacity). Finally, on the basis that both TFNs must match, a fuzzy risk product with alpha-cut principles was defined, as was the difference between the TFNs representing the load and resistance. The result indicates that the available stormwater storage volume exceeded the expected capacity; the risk of embankment failure was 0.15%, which was less than the design risk (1%, based on the hydrological return period concept). Compared with the traditional mining method, the filling mining method has the characteristics of environmental protection and safety, and is widely used in mine production. However, the filling experience in the filling process is affected by internal factors such as cement-sand ratio, gradation, slurry concentration, and external factors such as early strength agent and loading rate. Uniaxial compression test and acoustic emission test were carried out on backfill with and without early strength agent by different loading rates, and the mechanical properties and acoustic emission characteristics were studied. The results show that the strength of the filling body will increase firstly and then decrease under different loading rates, and the strength increase of the filling body is different when the dosage of the early strength agent is different. Based on the acoustic emission characteristic parameters RA and AF, it is found that the proportion of shear cracks decreases with the increase of loading rate, and the shear cracks increase with the increase of loading rate after reaching the critical loading rate. Compared with the filling body with early strength agent, the filling body without early strength agent has more shear cracks generated by loading at the same rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prospect of subsurface structures taking uncontrollable fire is a significant cause of stress held by people from all over the world. Mine fires and explosions have caused countless casualties and material losses for decades. A fire in a mine has the ability to rapidly contaminate the air of the entire mine, which might result in the loss of life and, in certain cases, the suspension of mining industry processes. Mine fires deplete coal supplies, release greenhouse gases and toxic chemicals, and cause ground subsidence from coal volume loss. This study aims to explore some interesting aspects of mine's fire data using Catboost and light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) methods in order to minimize the human fatalities and material losses during the construction of deep underground engineering projects. Firstly, 120 samples demonstrating several distinct characteristics were gathered from an underground coal mine in Turkey. The prediction framework was developed employing the training set and the appropriate configuration of hyperparameters. The findings indicate that LightGBM algorithms achieved a more comprehensive performance in comparison with Catboost, with an accuracy of 92 % and 89 %, respectively. Hence, the proposed intelligent decision-making model can be employed in preventing and warning system of fire risks in subsurface engineering projects. The suggested strategy would serve as a reliable guide for predicting fire intensity in deep underground projects to ensure safe subsurface environments. Mineral potential modelling and identifying promising areas are among the most important stages of preliminary exploration. Cell-Based Associations (CBA) is one of the recent and innovative mining processes in this regard. Designing the new method of Cellular Weight Based Association (CWBA) was initially based on the weight-cell weighting of maps. In this study, implementing CWBA on the 1:100,000 geological maps of Mahallat resulted in identifying and introducing promising points for gold mineralisation. For this purpose, we integrated three information layers of tectonic, geological data and remote sensing related to the pre-exploration of the Akhtarchi gold mine and considering Akhtarchi mine as the control. According to the results of the CWBA method, although all data in the present study are related to 2002-2005 when no mines were discovered as an anomaly, the anomalies overlap with the existing mines. Based on the field conditions of Huojitu Coal Mine of Shendong coal field in Northern China, eight dynamic numerical models are developed to examine the interaction between the shield and surrounding rock of the longwall panel. The models take into consideration the actual mining process and are developed to simulate the change in the working resistance of the shield for the same shallow burial but with different mining height conditions, ranging from 2.5 to 7 m. The results show that the average shield resistance during the basic roof initial and periodic weighting is 7 to 20 times the weight load of the mining height under the same shallow stratum conditions. By means of dimensional analysis, a relation between mining height and shield resistance in longwall panels is derived theoretically and is fitted by using the shield resistance data under different mining heights monitored in the numerical simulations. Mining and processing phosphate ore are among the essential branches of the economy in some developing countries, including Algeria. Conventional ore beneficiation methods can harm the environment by consuming tremendous amounts of water resources (during washing and flotation), potentially hazardous chemicals, and thermal energy. Mine water contains toxic metals that, when released, interfere with environmental functioning. Therefore, in line with environmental needs, conventional methods should be gradually replaced with safe biotechnological processes. This study aimed to investigate the biosorption and adhesion abilities of native microorganisms isolated from Djebel Onk ore (Algeria). The examined bacterial strains differed in their metal accumulation efficiency. The incubation of phosphate ore with the native strain Bacillus HK4 significantly increased the recovery of Mg and Cd (at pH 7, 8147.00 and 100.89 µg/g−1, respectively). The HK4 strain also revealed better adhesion to the ore particles than the reference strain of Bacillus subtilis. Thus, biosorption could be more effective when using the native HK4 strain, which can remove Cd and/or Mg over a pH 4–10 range. Moreover, concerning the unique adhesion capacity of HK4, the strain can be considered in the design of bioflotation methods, as well as in the development of an eco-friendly method of ore and post-flotation waste beneficiation. The regional environmental–geochemical surveying of the long-term impacts of mining and ore processing on a large part of the Zambian Copperbelt mining district was carried out by the Czech Research Group with cooperation of the Geology Department, University of Zambia, and the Geological Survey of Zambia in the period 2002–2018. This included the characterization of various sources of contamination, the extent of contamination of soils and crops, and the degree of contamination of river water and sediments. Solid speciation studies of potentially harmful chemical elements (PHEs), plant and human bioaccessibility studies, and a range of mineralogical techniques were used to assess the pathways of PHE cycling in terrestrial and aqueous systems and their impacts on human health. Ores of the Zambian Copperbelt mining district are mined for Cu and Co, but a number of other trace elements (Pb, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn) gradually accumulated in soils and stream sediments. It was concluded that the most important problems related to ore mining and processing are the contamination of soil and crops due to dust fall out from tailing facilities and emissions from smelters. Moreover, leakages of solutions from tailing dams, insufficient technological control of their stability and breakdowns on pipelines transporting slurry from treatment plants to tailing impoundments cause contamination of water courses and deposition of metal(loids) in stream sediments. However, the contamination of the Kafue River water is relatively limited due to its high neutralization capacity. In contrast, in some Kafue River tributaries, especially those close to big mining centers, the concentrations of dissolved Cu and Co are high (up to 14,752 μg/L and 1917 μg/L) and exceed Zambian effluent limits. Nowadays, the cemented paste backfill mining method is widely used in mines. Since the temperature of the mine increases with increasing mining depth, the influence of temperature on the mechanical properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB) require attention. To address the problem of less research on paste performance in high temperature environments, uniaxial compressive strength tests of CPB at different temperatures were performed, and it was observed that temperature had a significant effect on the CPB strength. The CPB strength at a curing temperature above 40 °C deteriorated in the later curing time period, CPB at 65 °C was "crisp", and the strength was lower than 40 °C in 3~28 days. Microscopic tests, such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analysis, of the samples found that the coarsening of the pore structure of CPB was the main reason for the decrease in the strength caused by the increase in temperature. The effect of curing temperature on the deformation characteristics of CPB was studied. Different curing temperatures had a greater impact on the stress-strain curve and elastic modulus, and there was a linear relationship between the elastic modulus and strength. Finally, based on MATLAB, a back propagation (BP) neural network model of strength under different curing temperature conditions was established. Compared with the actual value and the predicted value, the average absolute error was less than 0.2 MPa, and the average relative error was less than 6%. This prediction model had a high accuracy. The lead–zinc mine Bleiberg-Kreuth located in the Austrian federal state of Carinthia has had a long mining history, spanning from the early 14th century to the 1990s. The mining and processing activities undertaken over the centuries and, consequently, the composition of the waste rock material changed throughout this period. Today, the focus on waste rock dumps is motivated firstly by environmental interests and secondly by economic aspects. This article provides a comprehensive approach for the characterisation of three different waste rock dumps. The characterisation covers both mineralogical–geological methods and those involving the use of a mineral processor. The characterisation method presented herein starts with the sampling and calculation of the sampling mass, followed by sieve analysis and sink–float analysis, resulting in a two-dimensional fractional analysis. The consolidated results of the fractional and chemical analyses allow for a simplified forecast model for an ideal classification and density separation. This paper investigates the financial and environmental consequences stemming from the introduction of a carbon levy applied to mining and processing activities. The novelty is twofold: (1) the effect of a carbon tax, proportional to the emissions produced by all relevant mining activities, is accounted for in the determination of the Ultimate Pit Limit (UPL), i.e. the environmental costs are not applied a posteriori to pit optimization but included concurrently to Net Present Value (NPV) maximization, allowing to investigate the relationship between carbon tax value versus NPV, amount of ore extracted and carbon emissions; (2) we use a new software, OptimalSlope, to automatically determine geotechnically optimal profiles for the mine pitwalls. The Marvin copper deposit (block model data publicly available from MineLib repository) was adopted as a case study. Several pit optimizations were performed based on four different values of carbon tax and adopting either traditional planar or non-linear optimal pitwalls. It emerges that the relationships between carbon tax value versus NPV, amount of ore extracted, and carbon emissions exhibited linearity in both cases of planar and optimal pitwall profiles. To study the fracture law of different overlying strata during mining of the lower protective seam under a close distance coal seam at a depth of 1000 m, roof bed‐separation and fissure imaging monitoring were carried out in the inlet roadway ahead of the working face of the JI15‐31040 lower protective seam in the Pingdingshan XII coal mine. The results show that with the overlying strata of the lower protective seam being affected by mining, the displacement of the overlying strata in the roof of 0–4 m was relatively large, and the fissure development was very significant. The displacement of the overlying strata in the roof of 4–12 m was relatively small, the fissures in this range were mostly randomly closed fissures, and this area was stable. Bed separation occurred in the roof of 12–16 m, and the bed‐separating fissures were mostly located at the coal–rock junction. During the mining process, the fractal dimension of the roof gradually increased, and the fissure network developed continuously. The changing process of the fractal dimension of the roof can be roughly divided into three typical change areas: less influence area (distance from the working face > 70 m), rapid increase area (15 m < distance from the working face < 70 m), and stable area (distance from the working face < 15 m), and the area within 70 m in front of the working face was the key supporting area. Under the influence of mining, the roof fissures showed an overall change trend of "from zero to some, from short to long, from small to large, and from narrow to wide." The use of rare earth elements (REE) in diverse areas of the world economy (e.g., industry, agriculture, medicine) has been significantly increased during the last decades. The mineral loparite can be considered as one of the REE sources along with bastnasite, monazite, and xenotime. The only active deposit of loparite ores in Russia is located at Kola Peninsula, northwestern Russia. The mining and processing of loparite are carried out at Lovozersky Mining and Processing Plant (MPP). In this study microfungal species isolated from the Lovozersky MPP's loparite ore concentration tailings, were studied. Based on morphological markers, a total of 15 species from nine genera have been isolated and identified. Two most dominant fungal species (Geomyces vinaceus and Penicillium simplicissimum) and two non-dominant (Aspergillus niveoglaucus and Pseudogymnoascuc pannorum), were tested in vitro on their tolerance/resistance to lanthanides (Nd and Ce). For comparison, microfungal strain Cadophora malorum, that is not isolate, was also tested. As the result, the most tolerant to both elements was P. simplicissimum which continued to grow at highest (500 mg/l) REE concentrations. Another dominant isolate G. vinaceus proved to be tolerant only to Nd and more sensitive to Ce. Our results indicate that P. simplicissimum has the potential to recover REEs such as Ce and Nd from the loparite ore concentration tails. The increasing demand for tin-tungsten (W-Sn) due to its versatile applications in various industries and its attractive high market price has created a motivation for mining companies to extract deep-seated tin-tungsten deposits in Myanmar at a fast pace to meet the world demands. At Hermyingyi (W-Sn) Deposit Mine, the feasibility of exploiting ore in multiple inclined veins simultaneously is being explored as a pilot project aimed at increasing W-Sn production. Thus, this study is aimed at the development of optimal design and guidelines for excavating multiple veins with stability certitude in weak rock mass based on the evaluations undertaken. The analyses were carried out using FLAC3Dver. 5.0 and Phase2 V 7.0 software. The results demonstrate that excavation of large stope dimensions with ≥ 5 m width in parallel multiple veins simultaneously is not recommendable as the stopes experience high potential stope failure, thus the development of stopes with width dimensions of ≤ 3 m in all the parallel multiple veins simultaneously in weak rock mass conditions is ideal. In terms of space intervals between parallel inclined veins, it is recommendable to undertake multiple vein excavations for gentle inclined veins in weak rock mass conditions only if the interval of the veins is emplaced at ≥ 14 and 10 m for steep dipping inclined veins with good rock mass conditions. The study also shows that the cut and fill method is a more favorable mining method for multiple veins excavation than the open stoping method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to examine the compensation practices and the valuation methods valuers apply in the context of the current legal framework for expropriation to assess compensation for farms impacted by mining in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach: Compensation reports and archival materials were examined to identify the issues related to the valuation methods, compensation practices and expropriation procedures in the mining sector. Interviews were then conducted with 35 farmers and farmers' representatives, officials of mining companies, representatives of the Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission and valuers/researchers on the issues identified through the document analysis. Findings: The results reveal that the lack of express standards for assessing compensation for mining-impacted crops has occasioned variations in the valuation methods and the standard crop population for compensation. The study further reveals the impacts of exchange rate distortions on crop compensation values. Practical implications: The study empirically substantiates the arguments for a revised compensation regime in Ghana's mining sector. Valuers, mining companies and policymakers' awareness of this research will impact farm compensation valuation practices in the future. Social implications: The adequacy of compensation for mining-impacted farmers remains a topical issue, especially in African countries. This research contributes to the literature and reveals the socio-economic impacts of the current compensation regime on the livelihoods of expropriated farmers. Originality/value: This paper is the first to analyse the valuation methods, the compensation values and the key parameters valuers apply in assessing compensation for mining-impacted crops in Ghana. Gasoline is recognized as an unsustainable energy source, and multiple industries now use lithium-ion battery alternatives to meet society's demands for a shift away from nonrenewable sources. Lithium-ion battery powered products produce zero emissions and no toxic fumes, so they are deemed more eco-friendly than their gas counterparts. Yet, such a conclusion disregards the other environmental costs present in the earlier and later stages of the battery life cycle. The process of mining lithium and cobalt for lithium-ion batteries and the difficulties of recycling such materials should be taken into account just as the process of extracting gasoline from crude oil and the pollution from exhaust gases are. This study provides a comparison of lithium-ion batteries and gasoline as energy sources in the production and disposal phases from an environmental standpoint. Real-time monitoring of the power cable state has tremendous significance for ensuring the safe and economic operation of mine power distribution systems. However, due to the harsh conditions of underground coal mines, it is difficult for the cable monitoring system operating in underground coal mines to carry out large-scale calculations to diagnose the grounding fault of the cable. Additionally, there are many types of cable grounding faults, such as single grounding fault and two-phase ground fault. Therefore, how to determine the type of grounding fault quickly through effective calculations and alarms to select the grounding cable is always a difficult task. In this study, to reduce the complexity of cable insulation state classification, we develop a novel classification method based on the decision tree algorithm. Concerning the zero-sequence network under different insulation conditions, the first calculation's positive and negative values were generated to identify whether the cable insulation was symmetrical. Then, the insulation degradation phase is identified by the relationship between the three-phase voltage phase angle and the current difference variation between the beginning and end of the line. By substituting the correlation quantities collected by a wide-area synchronous measurement system into different equations, the whole grid's decision tree was constructed in different insulation states. Then, the insulation state of each line was evaluated according to the conductance value. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified using a 35/6 kV mine power distribution system model based on the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The test results illustrate that the method can accurately diagnose the power cable insulation state based on the decision tree of whether the grid three-phase loads operate in an ungrounded mode or not. Although neutral in situ leaching through CO2 + O2 is employed to extract uranium (U) in sandstone by in situ leaching (ISL), mechanisms of U mobilization and O2 consumption remained unclear. To address this gap, 18 groundwater samples were taken from the Qianjiadian sandstone U ore field, including seven samples from production wells in mining area M1 (mining for 5 years), six samples from production wells in mining area M2 (mining for 4 years), and five samples from monitoring wells (GC), to quantify U‐mobilizing processes in the mining aquifer by employing hydrogeochemical compositions and multi‐isotopes. The introduction of O2 and CO2 efficiently stimulated U mobilization in the mining aquifer. The injected CO2 critically promoted the dissolution of carbonate minerals, which enhanced the formation of uranyl carbonate (predominantly CaUO2(CO3)22− and Ca2UO2(CO3)3(aq)) and thus facilitated U mobility. Generally, δ34SSO4 and δ18OSO4 in M2 and M1 were significantly lower than those in GC (p < 0.01). A Bayesian isotope mixing model of δ34SSO4 and δ18OSO4 showed that the contribution of pyrite oxidation to SO42− concentration increased from 1.7% in GC to 13.6% in M2 and to 15.0% in M1. During ISL, pyrite, ammonium, and dissolved organic carbon were major compounds competing with U(IV) for introduced O2 in the ore‐bearing aquifer. Most of the consumed O2 was used for pyrite oxidation (56.2%) and U(IV) oxidation (39.3%), following the thermodynamic sequence of those redox reactions. Purpose. Coal mining activities by underground mining method will disrupt the equilibrium of the surrounding rock mass. In underground mining, determining the influence zone of exploiting the longwall on the topographic surface is extremely important. Through analyzing the displacement and deformation of the rock mass when exploiting the longwall 21103 in Seam 11 at Nui Beo Coal Mine, the influence is to be determined of exploiting this longwall on the topographic surface in order to forecast the boundary of the influence zone that may affect the surface works, ensuring the safety of such works. Methodology. To achieve the research results, actual field survey methods, data analysis and numerical modeling methods are used in this article. Findings. Analysis of the results from the numerical model determined that the total height of the collapsed and cracked area when exploiting the longwall 21103 in Seam 11 is about 85 m. The subsidence to the ground is about 10 cm from the center of the subsidence area. The analysis results from the numerical model also show that the roof collapse angle is 69°, thereby determining the area of influence on the topographic surface in the range of 55 m. Results on the cross-sections show that the boundary of the influence of mining on the topographic surface is the closest section 6–6, which is about 12 m. The stability time of the collapsed rock mass is determined to be about 5 months. Originality. On the basis of UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code) software, the authors have developed a simulation model for the mining process of the longwall 21103 in Seam 11. Analysis of the results from the model has shown the state of displacement and deformation of the surrounding rock mass. In this study, the numerical modeling method is applied to simulate the displacement of the longwall, which is consistent with the actual production of the underground mine. This enabled the authors to assess and identify the affected area with the required degree of reliability. Practical value. The research results of the paper are used as a basis for implementation in actual production at Nui Beo Coal Mine. On the basis of the analysis of the surrounding rock mass displacements and deformations, when exploiting the longwall 21103 in Seam 11 at Nui Beo Coal Mine, the affected boundary of the topographic surface has been determined. At the same time, the stability time of the collapsed rock mass is also calculated. Underground resource exploitation has seriously damaged the surface ecological environment and underground water system. As an effective control measure, the filling mining process has greatly reduced the surface subsidence. As a branch of the filling mining process, the continuous mining and continuous backfilling (CMCB) method solves the contradiction of mining and filling in this process. The control index of filling ratio of even number lane (FRE) was presented to investigate the technical advantages of the CMCB method. The numerical analysis model was used to investigate the laws such as deformation characteristics of the surrounding rock, stress distribution, and plastic area distribution characteristics of backfill under four typical cases. As a consequence, the FRE effect law on overburden deformation and the roof control function of the backfill was disclosed, and overburden rock deformation control solutions were provided. According to the results, the overburden deformation varies dramatically when the FRE decreases, and it rises greatly when the even-numbered lane backfill (ELB) is not contacted with the roof. The contacting condition and filling condition of the odd numbered lane backfill (OLB) are connected to the distribution of stress and plastic zone. The backfill transmits the rock beam load by building a composite support system with the roof and floor rock layers, and it accomplishes the backfill's roof control function by combining the primary and secondary load-bearing and synergistic load-bearing connections between the backfills. Measures such as differential FRE, differential strength, non-uniformity of filling lane, and synergistic bearing of temporary support and backfill may help to decrease deformations and internal cracks in the surrounding rock. Diamond and gold mining has been practiced by artisanal miners in the Central African Republic (CAR) for decades. The recent introduction of riverine dredges indicates a transition from artisanal/manual digging and sorting techniques to small-scale mining methods. This study implements a remote sensing analysis of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to map gold and diamond dredges operating on the Kadéï (Sangha) river in the CAR. Riverine vessels are identified in Sentinel-1 SAR data between 2015 and 2019, and their activity levels are mapped over time. The number of active dredges identified on the river increased over the five years studied, with the largest increase occurring between 2016 and 2017. Detailing a method for mapping and monitoring riverine diamond and gold dredge mining is an important step in keeping up with evolving technologies and new areas of mineral exploitation and in helping address concerns over resource governance in remote and conflict-prone terrain. The use of SAR technology, with its weather-independence, broad coverage, and available wavelength combinations, allows for higher temporal resolution and improved vessel detection in the monitoring of small-scale mining (SSM) dredges. Coal mining has caused groundwater pollution and loss. Using a mined area as a water storage space for storing and purifying mine water is a low-cost environmentally friendly mining method. In this study, static and dynamic adsorption experiments on the ions in mine water were carried out using the roof rocks from the Lingxin coal mine. The sample analysis results show that the main chemical composition of the roof is mainly SiO2 and Al2O3. The water chemistry type of the mine water is SO4-HCO3-Cl-Na type, with an average mineralization of about 4000 mg/L. The experimental results show that gangue can stabilize the pH value of mine water with different pH values between 7.5 and 8.5. In the acidic and alkaline environment, the degree of void space increases the adsorption capacity of the gangue, in which the adsorption rate of gangue is between 3% and 5%. The calcium ion reduction rate reaches 75% in static leaching and 70% in dynamic leaching conditions. Medium-grained coarse sandstone has a stronger adsorption capacity than muddy siltstone. The results from this study can support further research on using gangue for water purification purposes in mines, simultaneously reducing the harmful accumulation of gangue and promoting the recycling of highly mineralized water. There is a great threat to the production safety of coal mines caused by mine water disasters. Traditional identification methods are not adapted to the efficiency of today's coal mining and do not offer the advantage of accurate detection in real-time. In this study, the Mayfly Algorithm (MA) was used to optimize the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, combined with laser-induced fluorescence technology, to apply it to the identification of mine water sources for the prevention of mine water disasters and post-disaster relief work. Taking sandstone water and goaf water as the original samples, five mixed water samples were also prepared by mixing the sandstone water and goaf water in different proportions, giving a total of seven water samples to be tested. Laser-induced fluorescence technology was used to obtain the fluorescence spectral data of water samples, and then the Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) dimensionality reduction algorithm and the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction algorithm were used to reduce the dimensions of the original spectral data. Then, three architectures, including LSTM, GA-LSTM (optimization of the LSTM by genetic algorithm) and MA-LSTM were designed to identify mine water sources. Finally, from the results' analysis, MA-LSTM performs best in many aspects after PCA dimensionality reduction and has the best identification effect. The room-and-pillar technique is a self-supporting mining method in which part of the ore is left unmined as pillars. To increase the mining efficiency, the pillars are later recovered partially or completely. This research aims at evaluating and comparing four methods of pillar recovery, namely, 'pocket and wing', 'open ending', 'split and fender', and 'Christmas tree' which are of particular importance. The performance of these methods of pillar recovery in the Tabas coal mine was evaluated by numerical modeling. To do this, a series of three-dimensional simulations were carried out in which the pillars were excavated according to the sequences specified by each method of recovery. The behavior of chain pillars, barrier pillars, and the roof was monitored and compared for the different cutting sequences. Using the shear strength reduction technique, the safety factor values were calculated during the different recovery methods until the verge of roof caving. The results revealed that the method of split and fender leads to a softer drop of the safety factor, and consequently, more controlled caving of the roof. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In underground mines, physical layer security (PLS) technology is a promising method for the effective and secure communication to monitor the mining process. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the PLS of an amplify-and-forward relay-aided system in power monitoring and communication systems for mining, with the consideration of multiple eavesdroppers. Explicitly, we propose a PLS scheme of cooperative jamming and precoding for a full-duplex system considering imperfect channel state information. To maximize the secrecy rate of the communications, an effective block coordinate descent algorithm is used to design the precoding and jamming matrix at both the source and the relay. Ionic rare earth ore is a type of featured rare earth ore in China. Its mining process suffers from a long leaching cycle and considerable consumption of leaching agents. Improving mining efficiency requires a sound physical understanding of the leaching process. In this study, the CFD-based numerical model is used to analyze the physical process of leaching through porous media formed by particles. The simulation results indicate that a lower packing porosity and smaller particles packed granular porous medium result in much larger energy dissipation during seepage, and the energy dissipation increases with seepage velocity. It is found that when the seepage velocity increases to a certain high value, the energy dissipation exceeds the value predicted by Darcy's law, which is mainly caused by liquid turbulence. Additionally, the effect of particle shape is examined. The results show that the granular medium composed of prolate particles causes larger energy dissipation than oblate particles, and spherical particles play the least role. This phenomenon may result from the particle shape affecting the area of the frontal contact surface between particles and liquid. The results provide new insights into the fundamental understanding of percolation and seepage behaviors in the ion-adsorption-type rare earth ore leaching process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The task of ore transportation is performed in all mines, regardless of their type (open pit/underground) or mining process. A substantial number of enterprises utilize wheeled machines to perform ore haulage, especially haul trucks and loaders. These machines' work consists of repeating cycles, and each cycle can be divided into 4 operations: loading, driving with full box/bucket, unloading and driving with empty box/bucket. Monitoring this process is essential to create analytical tools that support foremen and other management crew in achieving effective and optimal production and planning activities. Unfortunately, information gathered regarding the process is frequently based on operators' oral testimony. This process not only allows for abuse but is also a repetitive and tedious task that must be performed by foremen. The time and attention of foremen is valuable as they are responsible for managing practically everything in their current mine section (machines, operators, works, repairs, emergencies, safety, etc.). Therefore, the automatization of the described process of information gathering should be performed. In this article, we present two neural network models (one for haul trucks and one for loaders) build for detecting work cycles of the ore haulage process. Both models were built utilizing a 2-stage approach. In the first stage, the models' structures were optimized, while the second was focused on optimizing hyperparameters for the structure with best performance. Both of the proposed models were trained using data collected from on-board monitoring systems over hundreds of the machines' work hours and utilized the same input features: vehicle speed, fuel consumption, selected gear and engine rotational speed. Models have been subjected to comprehensive testing during which the efficiency and stability of the model responsible for haul trucks was proven. Results for loaders were not as high quality for haul trucks; however, some interesting facts were discovered that indicate possible directions for future development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To gain a deep understanding of the interaction between underground mining and mountain deformation, based on historical deformation and the UAV video, we analyzed the evolution process of deformation and failure in detail and comprehensively evaluated the slope deformation and fracture network under the action of underground mining via the bottom friction physical simulation test, DPDM technology, fractal theory, and percolation theory. We simulated the whole process of mining, deformation, and failure of the Pusa collapse. DPDM technology was employed to obtain the evolution process of the total displacement, maximum shear strain (γmax), and volumetric strain εv of the Pusa collapse and establish a relationship between the fractal dimension and settlement. Simultaneously, the fractal dimension, fracture number, fracture rate, and percolation probability of the fracture network were calculated in MATLAB software. The research results of the bottom friction physical simulation test and DPDM technology indicated that after the M10 coal seam was mined, the maximum total displacement and maximum shear strain γmax were mainly located in the direct roof, resulting in volume expansion due to the direct roof collapse. After the M14 coal seam was mined, the maximum total displacement and volume strain εv developed towards the slope top, and the maximum shear strain was located in the middle and lower parts of the model surface and the leading and trailing edges of the slope top, respectively. The research results of fractal dimension and percolation probability indicated that after the M10 coal seam was mined, the development form of the fracture network at this stage mainly entailed the formation of new fractures. After the M14 coal seam was mined, the fracture network developed from beyond this stage mainly included fracture expansion and opening. The test results are consistent with the historical change process and the UAV video showing the method and signs of deformation. These research results help to better explain the deformation evolution process of a given slope under the action of underground mining and provide a technical reference for accurate assessment and proper mitigation of similar landslide disasters. The whole tailings flocculation and settlement technology is the core link of the mine filling process, and concentration of full-tail mortar, flocculant unit consumption and flocculant solution concentration are the key factors affecting the flocculation and settlement of the whole tailings. In order to explore the characteristics of static flocculation settlement of whole tailings, the static settlement experiment of measuring cylinder was carried out based on orthogonal test design. The influences of the concentration of full-tail mortar, flocculant unit consumption and flocculant solution concentration on the flocculation settlement parameters of full-tail slurry were analyzed, and the prediction model of sedimentation rate and underflow concentration was established, and the best static flocculation settlement parameters were obtained. The results show that: Anionic flocculant has better flocculation effect than non-ionic flocculant, so anionic flocculant can be preferred as flocculant for flocculation settlement of fine full tailings. The influence degree of the three factors on settling velocity and bottom flow concentration is full-tail mortar concentration > flocculant unit consumption > flocculant solution concentration, and full-tail mortar concentration and flocculant unit consumption are significant influencing factors on settling velocity and underflow concentration. The flocculation settlement parameters of fine full tailings slurry are not only affected by single factor, but also by the interaction between factors. The optimization results of flocculation sedimentation parameters show that the optimal static flocculation sedimentation parameters are as follows: total tail mortar concentration 18.2%,flocculant single consumption 16.7 g/t, flocculant solution concentration 0.25%. The disturbance effect of underground mining on surface rivers, roads and structures is the primary concern of mines, and it is difficult to determine the stability of surface rivers and roads directly by delineating the traditional rock movement zone. In order to explore the influence of underground mining on surface subsidence, FLAC3D software was used to simulate the numerical calculation of surface rock movement in the filling mining process of Xiaolizi No.1 and No.2 iron mining areas, and the influence of underground mining process on surface subsidence deformation, surface river and the stability of adjacent mining transport road was analyzed. The results show that the absolute displacement of the ground surface is small, the index of tilt rate, curvature, horizontal deformation value is far less than the allowable value of the standard, and the stability is good, and the whole ground surface is stable. The definition of geostatistical domains is a stage in the estimation of mineral resources, in which a sample resulting from a mining exploration process is divided into zones that show homogeneity or minimal variation in the main element of interest or mineral grade, having geological and spatial meaning. Its importance lies in the fact that the quality of the estimation techniques, and therefore, the correct quantification of the mineral resource, will improve in geostatistically stationary areas. The present study seeks to define geostatistical domains of estimation for a mineral grade, using a non-traditional approach based on the k-prototype clustering algorithm. This algorithm is based on the k-means paradigm of unsupervised machine learning, but it is exempt from the one-time restriction on numeric data. The latter is especially convenient, as it allows the incorporation of categorical variables such as geological attributes in the grouping. The case study corresponds to a hydrothermal gold deposit of high sulfidation, located in the southern zone of Peru, where estimation domains are defined from a historical record of data recovered from 131 diamond drill holes and 37 trenches. The characteristics directly involved were the gold grade (Au), silver grade (Ag), type of hydrothermal alteration, and type of mineralization. The results obtained showed that clustering with k-prototypes is an efficient approach and can be used as an alternative or complement to the traditional methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the in situ leaching process of ion-adsorption rare earths, leaching solution needs to be constantly injected to the mine slopes. As a consequence, landslides are highly likely to occur due to the increasing water level of soil mass. To solve this problem, we conducted a mechanical analysis on the rising water level after solution injection, which shed light on the mechanical principle of slope instability brought about by rising water level. With water level variation as the major factor, we established an early warning system for landslide risks on the basis of the real-time monitoring of water level. Within the system, a self-designed landslide early warning model is embedded. In addition to monitoring the water level variation in slopes, this system can be employed for real-time data processing. With the integration of early warning model algorithm, the real-time graded early warning of slope landslide risks is achieved within the mining process of ion-adsorption rare earths. By discussing the real-time monitoring method, framework of landslide early warning system, FIFC landslide early warning model, optimization method of water level, and selection of landslide-inducing factors, this research provides an effective solution to the landslide early warning within the mining process of ion-adsorption rare earth minerals. The 110 mining method is a high-efficiency entry-retaining technology without coal pillars or filling materials. At present, there is no precedent for its application in the Huaneng Group. In order to introduce this technology, it is planned to carry out experimental application research in the Yuwang NO.1 Coal Mine of the Huaneng Diandong mining area. The Yuwang NO.1 Coal Mine is a typical coal and gas outburst mine with a coal seam group. In view of the introduction of the 110 mining method under these conditions, first, the geological conditions of the Yuwang NO.1 Coal Mine in the Huaneng Diandong mining area are analyzed, the geological characteristics of the test mining face are summarized, and the practical feasibility of the 110 mining method is analyzed according to the geological characteristics of "one soft, one low, two high, and two complex". Then, according to the engineering experience, calculations, and analysis, the key parameters of roof cutting of the test mining face in the Yuwang NO.1 Coal Mine are obtained, and with the help of a numerical simulation, the roof-cutting height, the roof-cutting angle, and the blasting parameters are numerically simulated and analyzed. The roof-cutting key parameters of the test face are obtained as follows: the roof-cutting depth is 7 m, the roof-cutting angle is 15°, and the blasting method is continuous hole blasting with 500 mm spacing. After that, according to the coal and gas outburst and the occurrence conditions of coal seams in the Yuwang NO.1 Coal Mine, a variety of gob closure design schemes and gob gas drainage design schemes are put forward, and the field effect investigation scheme is given. After the tunnels and open-off cut of the test coal mine's first mining face are connected, under the guidance of the above research results, the field blasting test and the 110 mining method entry-retaining test are further carried out to verify the rationality of the design of the roof-cutting parameters and the feasibility of the gangue wall closure and gas drainage design. Furthermore, in the process of the field practice, continuous research is carried out on the stope pressure law and the adjacent layer gas drainage technology under the 110 mining method, and finally, the 110 mining method application technology system in the Diandong Mining Area is formed. Purpose: The purpose of using the method is to obtain information on the social perception of the employment restructuring process in the mining industry, taking into account the phase of design, implementation, monitoring and impact assessment for the industry and local communities. Design/methodology/approach: The theses presented in the article have been verified using: literature review, critical literature analysis, document research and comparative analysis. The article presents a research method enabling social assessment of barriers and determinants of the employment restructuring process in the mining industry under the just transition mechanism. The method of researching the social perception of the hard coal mining employment restructuring process, due to the specificity and complexity of the issue under consideration, uses various, mutually complementary methods and techniques of social research: quantitative and qualitative. Findings: As a result of the analyzes and surveys carried out, a set of conclusions can be presented, the most important of which include conclusions relating to social issues – implementation of the economic transformation in mining communes and poviats is possible in the coming years, but the communes are not prepared for the transformation. The negative effects of the employment restructuring process on the local economy may be noticeable in significant liquidation of enterprises cooperating with entities restructuring industry, reduction of revenues to the budget of local government authorities and reduction of demand on the local market. Originality/value: The article enriches knowledge and develops a discussion in the area of social perception of the employment restructuring process in the mining industry. The attempt to capture the phenomena and processes presented here that may result from the transformation of hard coal mining in Poland is aimed at a better comprehension of the task that may be played by the local government in the area of which operating or closed mines and mining companies are located. On the basis of the results of the survey, it is mainly noticed that there is a need to define the challenges and tasks that should be undertaken in real action by the institutions responsible for the transformation of mining communes – especially due to the need to limit the social and economic consequences that may appear in the transformation process, both in the area of mining communes mining and in their surroundings. The continuous processes of mining development, since the very beginning of Minas Gerais State's development, have been giving new attention and meaning to valuable pre-existing features (i.e., cultural, social, and physical-environmental), impacting and recharacterizing not only its municipalities but their essential local or native sociocultural components. At the same time, mining, as one of the central pillars of the Brazilian development model, has put different communities, natural and cultural heritage, and mineral and water resources at risk. The wide concept of geodiversity and the related geoheritage emerge as an alternative for conservation, territorial planning, and sustainable development, to reconcile these spheres. This study developed a comprehensive framework for geoconservation within selected areas of mining landscapes, contributing to insights for the creation of a catalog about geoheritage in the state of Minas Gerais, discussing and analyzing well-established strategies and opportunities based on UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) and the GEOfood brand. We concluded that the mining landscapes of Minas Gerais must be administered as a viable possibility for economic and environmental dynamic actions and activities, strengthening the maintenance of municipalities from the very beginning to after the end of operational activities. Heritage programs such as UGGp and GEOfood enable knowledge sharing and engagement with geoheritage, improving the comprehension and management of the short- and long-term impacts of mining, while elevating geodiversity as a major source of information in the "greening" of mining policies. The disturbance depth of traffic load has a direct impact on the stability of a room-and-pillar mining goaf. To quantitatively calculate the relationship between the traffic load disturbance depth and influencing factors, 49 groups of horizontal combinations of different influencing parameters are designed in this study, based on the orthogonal experimental design method. Midas GTS is used to simulate and obtain the corresponding traffic load disturbance depth data. A multivariate linear regression analysis of the traffic load disturbance depth is conducted, and a regression formula for calculating the traffic load disturbance depth is established. According to the traffic load disturbance depth, goaf depth, and the stability of the roof, coal pillar, and base plate under traffic load conditions, a judgment flow of the room-and-pillar mining goaf treatment method under traffic load conditions is established, and it is applied to the reconstruction and expansion project of the Jixi section of the Dan-A national highway. The results show that a geogrid can be used for treatment purposes when the traffic load disturbance depth is 1.5 times lower than the depth of the room-and-pillar mining goaf, or when the traffic load disturbance depth is 1.5 times greater than the depth of the room-and-pillar mining goaf but the roof, coal pillar, and base plate are stable. Additionally, grouting is needed for treatment in other cases. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for the selection of treatment methods for room-and-pillar mining goafs underlying highways in the future. The surface subsidence caused by underground mining is a spatiotemporal process. The impact of mining on surface structures (houses, highways, railways, dikes, etc.) and structures in rock strata (shafts, roadways, chambers, etc.) is a dynamic process. It is necessary to study the dynamic movement law of the surface and overlying strata in the mining process of the working face to predict the extent of the impact of mining on the aforementioned structures. It provides a reference for pre-reinforcement and post-mining treatment. This paper studies the variation of surface dynamic movement based on the survey line above the working face of Peigou Coal Mine. The numerical simulation model of the overlying strata dynamic movement is established to study the dynamic movement law of rock strata with different depths, and the fitting function of surface and overlying strata dynamic movement is determined. Finally, the subsidence velocity prediction function of the major section of the surface and overlying strata in the Peigou Coal Mine is established. The accuracy of this prediction function is demonstrated by contrasting the subsidence and subsidence velocity curves of the surface subsidence basin survey line with the numerical model. In this paper, a numerical simulation method for the dynamic movement of the surface and overlying strata and a function for predicting the subsidence velocity on the strike major section are established, which provides an important theoretical reference for the dynamic protection of the structures on the surface and in the overlying strata.
