151. Dynamical depinning of chiral domain walls

Abstract

The domain wall depinning field represents the minimum magnetic field needed to move a domain wall, typically pinned by samples' disorder or patterned constrictions. Conventionally, such field is considered independent on the Gilbert damping since it is assumed to be the field at which the Zeeman energy equals the pinning energy barrier (both damping independent). Here, we analyse numerically the domain wall depinning field as function of the Gilbert damping in a system with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Contrary to expectations, we find that the depinning field depends on the Gilbert damping and that it strongly decreases for small damping parameters. We explain this dependence with a simple one-dimensional model and we show that the reduction of the depinning field is related to the internal domain wall dynamics, proportional to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and the finite size of the pinning barriers.

Abstract

We analyze the interactions of particle detectors with coherent states of a free scalar field. We find that the eigenvalues of the post-interaction density matrices of i) a single detector, ii) two detectors, and iii) the partial transpose of the latter, are all independent of which coherent state the field was in. Abstract

The current-driven domain wall motion in a ratchet memory due to spin-orbit torques is studied from both full micromagnetic simulations and the one dimensional model. Within the framework of this model, the integration of the anisotropy energy contribution leads to a new term in the well known q-$\Phi$ equations, being this contribution responsible for driving the domain wall to an equilibrium position. The comparison between the results drawn by the one dimensional model and full micromagnetic simulations proves the utility of such a model in order to predict the current-driven domain wall motion in the ratchet memory. Additionally, since current pulses are applied, the paper shows how the proper working of such a device requires the adequate balance of excitation and relaxation times, being the latter longer than the former. Finally, the current-driven regime of a ratchet memory is compared to the field-driven regime described elsewhere, then highlighting the advantages of this current-driven regime., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

154. Entanglement harvesting and divergences in quadratic Unruh-DeWitt detectors pairs

We analyze correlations between pairs of particle detectors quadratically coupled to a real scalar field. We find that, while a single quadratically coupled detector presents no divergences, when one considers pairs of detectors there emerge unanticipated persistent divergences (not regularizable via smooth switching or smearing) in the entanglement they acquire from the field. We have characterized such divergences, discussed whether a suitable regularization can allow for fair comparison of the entanglement harvesting ability of the quadratic and the linear couplings, and finally we have found a UV-safe quantifier of harvested correlations. Abstract

Chiral domain walls of Neel type emerge in heterostructures that include heavy metal (HM) and ferromagnetic metal (FM) layers owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction at the HM/FM interface. In developing storage class memories based on the current induced motion of chiral domain walls, it remains to be seen how dense such domain walls can be packed together. Here we show that a universal short range repulsion that scales with the strength of the DM interaction exists among chiral domain walls. The distance between the two walls can be reduced with application of out of plane field, allowing formation of coupled domain walls. Surprisingly, the current driven velocity of such coupled walls is independent of the out of plane field, enabling manipulation of significantly compressed coupled domain walls using current pulses. Moreover, we find that a single current pulse with optimum amplitude can create a large number of closely spaced domain walls. These features allow current induced generation and synchronous motion of highly packed chiral domain walls, a key feature essential for developing domain wall based storage devices.

Abstract

We show, under a very general set of assumptions, that pairs of identical particle detectors in spacelike separation, such as atomic probes, can only harvest entanglement from the vacuum state of a quantum field when they have a non-zero energy gap. Furthermore, we show that degenerate probes are strongly challenged to become entangled through their interaction through scalar and electromagnetic fields even in full light-contact. We relate these results to previous literature on remote entanglement generation and entanglement harvesting, giving insight into the energy gap's protective role against local noise, which prevents the detectors from getting entangled through the interaction with the field., Comment: 10 pages. Abstract

Magnetic domain wall (DW) motion induced by a localized Gaussian temperature profile is studied in a Permalloy nanostrip within the framework of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation. The different contributions to thermally induced DW motion, entropic torque and magnonic spin transfer torque, are isolated and compared. The analysis of magnonic spin transfer torque includes a description of thermally excited magnons in the sample. A third driving force due to a thermally induced dipolar field is found and described. Finally, thermally induced DW motion is studied under realistic conditions by taking into account the edge roughness. The results give quantitative insights into the different mechanisms responsible for domain wall motion in temperature gradients and allow for comparison with experimental results., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

There is a deficit for bone tissue natural grafts that seek to be covered with synthetic substitutes. Scaffolds generated with 3D printing and electrospinning allow adequate mechanical properties maintaining a structure appropriate for cell growth. Here, a scaffold made up of three-dimensional (3D) printed PLA frameworks added with PCL/PLA/nHA nanofibers was manufactured. The framework showed mechanical properties similar to other reported bone substitutes, while the nanofibers showed diameters between 200 and 850 nm. Scaffolds were suitable for cell adhesion and proliferation when evaluated with fibroblasts, showing cell proliferation into the nanofiber network, a fundamental aspect in tissue engineering. Abstract

Spin wave propagation along a ferrimagnetic strip with out-of-plane magnetization is studied by means of micromagnetic simulations. The ferrimagnetic material is considered to be formed by two antiferromagnetically coupled sub-lattices. Two critical temperatures can be defined for such systems: that of magnetization compensation and that of angular momentum compensation, both different due to distinct Landé factors for each sub-lattice. Spin waves in the strip are excited by a spin current injected at one of its edges. The obtained dispersion diagrams show exchange-dominated forward volume spin waves. For a given excitation frequency, the Néel vector describes highly eccentric orbits, the eccentricity depending on temperature, whose semi-major axis is oriented differently at distinct locations on the FiM strip. Abstract

Many contaminated tailings throughout the world cause environmental and human-health related problems due to air and water drift. Tailing phytostabilization is a promising solution, but only certain plant species may tolerate and grow in these contaminated areas. We analyzed the chemical properties of a vegetated and unvegetated area in a tailing site in Central Chile. In addition, in the vegetated area we analyzed the metals content of roots, stems, and foliage in 41-years old plantations of Pinus radiata, Acacia dealbata, and Eucalyptus globulus (the only three species that survived from a total of 34 species planted), and determined height (H), and diameter at breast height (DBH). The results indicated that, except for pH, Se, Pb, and organic matter, all components (nutrients and metals) were two- to three- fold lower in the vegetated tailing compared to that of the unvegetated tailing. The analysis of plant tissues indicated that Cu was higher in the roots of P. radiata (2,073 mg kg−1) and lower in the stems of the same species (4.1 mg kg−1). However, the ability to take up and transport Cu to the shoots was higher in A. dealbata and lower in P. radiata (bioaccumulation factor of 0.19 and 0.06, respectively). Here we present results for the first long-term phytostabilization project of copper mine tailings in Chile. From the 34 native and exotic species established in 1980 in a mine tailing disposal site with 1,000 mg Cu kg−1, only the exotic Pinus radiata, Acacia dealbata and Eucalyptus globulus were able to survive and adapt to the tailing conditions the last 41 years. 163. Rice Bund Management by Filipino Farmers and Willingness to Adopt Ecological Engineering for Pest Suppression.

Abstract

Ecological engineering is defined as the design of ecosystems for the benefit of human society and the environment. In Asia, the ecological engineering of rice fields by establishing vegetation on bunds/levees for natural enemies has recently gained traction; however, its success depends on farmers' willingness to implement changes. We surveyed 291 rice farmers in four regions of the Philippines to assess their bund management practices and willingness to establish bund vegetation that restores rice regulatory ecosystem services for pest management. During pre- and post-open field day (OFD) interviews, we assessed farmers' perceptions of ecological engineering practices and sought their advice concerning bund vegetation. Over 60% of the farmers grew crops or allowed weeds on their bunds. Vegetables were grown as a source of extra food or income, and flowers were grown for pest management. Among the remaining farmers, their willingness to try ecological engineering increased from 36 to 74% after the OFDs. Furthermore, after the OFDs, willing farmers increasingly (from 2.6 to 15%) cited pest management as a reason to grow vegetables on bunds, and farmers almost exclusively focused on growing vegetables rather than flowers to adapt the system. While 46.5% of farmers who grew vegetables on their bunds applied insecticides, only ca 20% indicated that they would do so after the OFDs, if needed. Farmers had differing opinions on how vegetables would be incorporated into their rice farms. This range of options could be encouraged wherever farmers recognize the potential harm from pesticides for biodiversity and the restoration value of a diversified farm habitat. Abstract

Introduction: Owing to controversy information surrounds effect of glucocorticoids on the evolution of COVID-19, we evaluate the effects of outpatient glucocorticoid use on the severity and progression of COVID-19 and risk of infection and analyse the effect of window of exposure and dose. Methods: We conducted a population-based case − control study, involving 4 substudies: (i) Hospitalisation; (ii) Mortality, using subjects hospitalised with a PCR + as cases and subjects without a PCR + as controls; (iii) Progression, including subjects with a PCR + (hospitalised versus non-hospitalised); and (iv) Susceptibility, with all subjects with a PCR + and subjects without a PCR +. Adjusted odds ratios (ORa) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Results: The outpatient glucocorticoid use was associated with an increased risk of hospitalisation (aOR 1.79; 95% CI 1.56–2.05), mortality (aOR 2.30; 95% CI 1.68–3.15), progression (aOR 1.69; 95% CI 1.43–2.00) and susceptibility (aOR 1.29, 95% CI 1.19–1.41). Furthermore, the effects was observed to be greater at higher doses and the closer that drug use approached the outcome date, with an almost fourfold increase in mortality among users in the previous month (aOR 3.85; 95% CI 2.63–5.62). Conclusions: According to the results of this real-world data study, outpatient glucocorticoid use should be considered in making decisions about intrahospital treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

165. Origins of Susceptibility to Insect Herbivores in High-Yielding Hybrid and Inbred Rice Genotypes.

Abstract

Simple Summary: Hybrid rice is grown by millions of Asian farmers and has normally higher yields compared to inbred varieties. However, hybrid rice has been associated with high damage from herbivores. This susceptibility could be due to the physiology of the hybrid plant type or due to a limited availability of male sterile parents that are necessary for hybrid seed production. We examined how plant type and breeding affect the relative susceptibilities of hybrid and inbred rice by exposing 32 rice genotypes to the brown planthopper, whitebacked planthopper, and yellow stemborer in controlled environments and field plots. We compared insect fitness on the plants and related this to the type and genetic similarity of genotypes. Despite their diverse origins (China, Colombia, India, and the Philippines), the hybrids and inbreds formed two distinct genetic groups, thereby confounding plant type and phylogeny. Hybrids were generally more susceptible to stemborers but not to planthoppers. Relative herbivore fitness was strongly influenced by plant origin (i.e., breeding program) with one group of related genotypes being relatively susceptible to all three herbivores. Our results indicate that hybrids are not inherently more susceptible than inbreds to insect herbivores and that careful screening with the elimination of the most susceptible genotypes is necessary to reduce herbivore damage to hybrid and inbred rice in Asia. Several studies have reported higher damage from insect herbivores to hybrid compared to inbred (pure line) rice. We used a collection of 20 hybrid and 12 inbred genotypes from diverse origins to test the hypotheses that hybrid rice susceptibility is due to (a) the hybrid plant type and/or (b) rice phylogeny. We challenged the genotypes with Nilaparvata lugans (BPH), Sogatella furcifera (WBPH) and Scirpophaga incertulas (YSB) in greenhouse and screenhouse bioassays and monitored herbivores in field plots. We used single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers to assess genetic similarities between the genotypes and found that the hybrids and inbreds formed two distinct clusters regardless of origin. In the screenhouse, hybrids were more susceptible than inbreds to YSB; however, resistant hybrids and susceptible inbreds were also apparent from both the screenhouse and field plots. Plant biomass was the best predictor of susceptibility to YSB. Plant origin had a greater effect than plant type on susceptibility to BPH and WBPH. WBPH was the most abundant planthopper in the field plots where numbers were highly correlated with planthopper fitness in the greenhouse bioassays. Our results provide evidence that high-yielding hybrids that are relatively resistant to herbivores can be achieved through careful breeding. We investigate the open dynamics of a quantum system when it is rapidly repeatedly updated by a quantum channel. Specifically, we analyze when this dynamics can purify the system. We develop a necessary and sufficient condition for such purification effects to occur and characterize their strength. We thoroughly analyze the specific scenario of a quantum system undergoing rapid unitary interactions with a sequence of ancillary quantum systems. We find that while the purification effects are generally present, in order for these effects to be strong compared to the decoherence effects the interaction Hamiltonian must have a minimum degree of complexity. Abstract

We report the thickness dependence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in Pt\Co(t)\AlOx, studied by current-induced domain wall (DW) motion and second-harmonic experiments. From the DW motion study, a monotonous decay of the effective DMI strength with an increasing Co thickness is observed, in agreement with a DMI originating at the Pt\Co interface. The study of the ferromagnetic thickness dependence of spin-orbit torques reveals a more complex behavior. The effective SOT-field driving the DW motion is found to initially increase and then saturate with an increasing ferromagnetic thickness, while the effective SOT-fields acting on a saturated magnetic state exhibit a non-monotonic behavior with increasing Co-thickness. The observed thickness dependence suggests the spin-Hall effect in Pt as the main origin of the SOTs, with the measured SOT amplitudes resulting from the interplay between the varying thickness and the transverse spin diffusion length of the Co layer., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

We analyze the exchange of information in different cosmological backgrounds when sender and receiver are timelike separated and communicate through massless fields (without the exchange of light-signals). Remarkably, we show that the dominance of a cosmological constant makes the amount of recoverable information imprinted in the field by the sender extremely resilient: it does not decay in time or with the spatial separation of sender and receiver, and it actually increases with the rate of expansion of the Universe. This is in stark contrast with the information carried by conventional light-signals and with previous results on timelike communication through massless fields in matter dominated cosmologies., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. We study the Anti-Unruh effect in general stationary scenarios. We find that, for accelerated trajectories, a particle detector coupled to a KMS state of a quantum field can cool down (click less often) as the KMS temperature increases. Remarkably, this is so even when the detector is switched on adiabatically for infinitely long times. We study how two fully-featured hydrogenlike atoms harvest entanglement from the electromagnetic field vacuum, even when the atoms are spacelike separated. We compare the electromagnetic case ---qualitatively and quantitatively--- with previous results that used scalar fields and featureless, idealized atomic models. Our study reveals the new traits that emerge when we relax these idealizations, such as anisotropies in entanglement harvesting and the effect of exchange of angular momentum. Abstract

We investigate the emergent open dynamics of a quantum system that undergoes rapid repeated unitary interactions with a sequence of ancillary systems. We study in detail how decoherence appears as a subleading effect when a quantum system is 'bombarded' by a quick succession of ancillas. In the most general case, these ancillas are a) taken from an ensemble of quantum systems of different dimensions, b) prepared in different states, and c) interacting with the system through different Hamiltonians. We derive an upper bound on decoherence rates in this regime, and show how a rich variety of phenomena in open dynamics (such as projection, thermalization, purification, and dephasing) can emerge out of our general model of repeated interaction. Furthermore, we show a fundamental link between the strength of the leading order dissipation and the intrinsic "unpredictability" in the system-ancilla interaction. Abstract

The response of inertial particle detectors coupled to a scalar field satisfying nonlocal dynamics described by nonanalytic functions of the d'Alembertian operator $\Box$ is studied. We show that spontaneous emission processes of a low energy particle detector are very sensitive to high-energy nonlocality scales. This allows us to suggest a nuclear physics experiment ($\sim$ MeV energy scales) that outperforms the sensitivity of LHC experiments by many orders of magnitude. 197. Influence of Joule heating on current-induced domain wall depinning

Abstract

The domain wall depinning from a notch in a Permalloy nanostrip on top of a ${\rm SiO_2/Si}$ substrate is studied theoretically under application of static magnetic fields and the injection of short current pulses. The influence of Joule heating on current-induced domain wall depinning is explored self-consistently by coupling the magnetization dynamics in the ferromagnetic strip to the heat transport throughout the system. Our results indicate that Joule heating plays a remarkable role in these processes, resulting in a reduction in the critical depinning field and/or in a temporary destruction of the ferromagnetic order for typically injected current pulses. In agreement with experimental observations, similar pinning-depinning phase diagrams can be deduced for both current polarities when the Joule heating is taken into account. These observations, which are incompatible with the sole contribution of spin transfer torques, provide a deeper understanding of the physics underlying these processes and establish the real scope of the spin transfer torque. They are also relevant for technological applications based on current-induced domain-wall motion along soft strips.

Abstract

Randomness is an indispensable resource in modern science and information technology. Fortunately, an experimentally simple procedure exists to generate randomness with well-characterized devices: measuring a quantum system in a basis complementary to its preparation. Towards realizing this goal one may consider using atoms or superconducting qubits, promising candidates for quantum information processing. However, their unavoidable interaction with the electromagnetic field affects their dynamics. At large time scales, this can result in decoherence. Smaller time scales in principle avoid this problem, but may not be well analysed under the usual rotating wave and single-mode approximation (RWA and SMA) which break the relativistic nature of quantum field theory. Here, we use a fully relativistic analysis to quantify the information that an adversary with access to the field could get on the result of an atomic measurement. Surprisingly, we find that the adversary's guessing probability is not minimized for atoms initially prepared in the ground state (an intuition derived from the RWA and SMA model)., Comment: 11 pages. 8 figures. We propose a generalization of the superconducting circuit simulation of the dynamical Casimir effect where we consider relativistically moving boundary conditions following different trajectories. We study the feasibility of the setup used in the past to simulate the dynamical Casimir effect to reproduce richer relativistic trajectories differing from purely sinusoidal ones.
