This investigation demonstrates sequential ultrastructural lesions of cardiac myocytes in rabbits exposed locally to a single dose (1008 and 1300 rads) of x-irradiation. A wide spectrum of lesions were observed as early as 24 hours postirradiation and were followed for as long as 4 months after x-irradiation. Myofibrillar degeneration and dissociation of intercalated discs seen at 24 and 48 hours postirradiation were followed by gradual progression of myofibrillolysis and myofiber degeneration to myofiber atrophy, myofiber collapse and eventual progressive pericellular interstitial myocardial fibrosis. The possible role of dissociation of intercalated disca in the pathogenesis of well-known postirradiation electrocardiographic changes is suggested. Myofibrillar degeneration appears to be the characteristic (although non-specific) lesion of radiation having a multifactorial etiology: direct radiation effect, vascular compromise and endogenous (cardiac) catecholamine liberation.

The structure of the ordered form of the partially ordered cubic: α-Ga2Se3 is based on a tetragonal, body-centred cell, with space group I41/acd, a = 23.235 (5), c = 10.828 (2) Å, Z = 48, Dm = 4.91 g cm−3 at 30°C. Diffractometer data up to θ ~ 80° from Cu Kα radiation are given for the β phase with nominal composition Ga2Se3.03.

The in vitro activity of Sch 29,482, a new oral beta-lactam antimicrobial agent, was compared with those of norfloxacin, rosoxacin, ampicillin, erythromycin, and tetracycline against 142 Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains. Sch 29,482 was as active as norfloxacin and rosoxacin. Its activity was greater than the other three antimicrobial agents. It inhibited 90% of the isolates, regardless of beta-lactamase activity, at a concentration of less than or equal to 0.06 micrograms/ml.

The in vitro activities of three new beta-lactam antimicrobial agents, cefodizime, ceftazidime, and aztreonam (formerly azthreonam), were compared with those of cefotaxime, cefuroxime, cefoxitin, and penicillin against 100 beta-lactamase-negative and 42 beta-lactamase-positive Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains. The three new antimicrobial agents showed excellent activity against N. gonorrhoeae regardless of beta-lactamase production. Cefodizime was as active as cefotaxime and more active than the other test antimicrobial agents. It inhibited all isolates at a concentration of less than or equal to 0.016 micrograms/ml.

The creation of the machinery of the special financing institutions, more appropriately designated in economic literature as 'development banks', as an integral part of the deliberate and conscious attempt by the Government to orient the financial system to the requirements of planned economic development, has been, indeed, an outstanding institutional development in the emergence of an efficient industrial financing mechanism in India.

Among the institutional sources of industrial finance in India, commercial banks are by far the oldest and quantitatively vitally important. In terms of the orthodox view of the theory of deposit banking, bank credit should be restricted to the financing of seasonal and other temporary financial requirements of a self-liquidating nature i.e., for working capital requirements, the permanent needs being met from long-term sources.
