Abstract

Multihadron production has been measured at the Adone e+e− storage ring in the c.m. energy region 1600 ÷ 1900 MeV. A resonant behaviour is observed, centered at 1819 ± 5 (±2) MeV, with a width of 24 ± 5 (±4) MeV. This effect is observed only in the events with 3 or 4 charged particles together with photons, but not in those without photons.

Abstract

By using the method of removing the leading protons, the inclusive fractional-momentum distributions of particles produced in low-pT (pp) interactions have been measured for effective hadronic energies,Ehad, available for particle production, in the range corresponding to the very low (e+e−) c.m. energies\(\left( {\sqrt s } \right)_{e^ + e^ - } = (3.0 \div 7.8) GeV\). The results are in good agreement with (e+e−) data. This shows that the similarity with (e+e−), already found at higherEhad, extends to the lowest energy range in (e+e−). The experiment was performed at (√s)pp=30 GeV, in the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings, by using the Split-Field Magnet Facility.

Abstract

The distribution of the charged-particle multiplicities at the ISR are studied in terms of the effective energy available for particle production in (pp) interactions. These distributions are found to scale once the effective energy, obtained via the leading subtraction method, is used. A comparison with the charged particle distributions measured in (e+e-) annihilation shows a clear difference. This could be interpreted in terms of gluon-induced and quark-induced jets; where the gluoninduced jets are characterized by a wider multiplicity distribution with respect to quarkinduced jets.

A new method of observing the production of open «top» baryonic states at the CERN\((p\bar p)\) Collider is presented. It is based on the «leading» production mechanism, extended to the heaviest-flavoured baryon and antibaryon states, and on the charge asymmetry of the leptons originating from their semi-leptonic decays.

Abstract

The experiment WA44 at the CERN SPS, "Search for quarks in high-energy neutrino interactions", is equipped with a large volume (2.35 × 1.25 × 0.6 m3) streamer chamber for the primary ionization measurement of charged tracks. The streamer chamber, filled with a He-Ne mixture, is operated in the avalanche mode. Image intensifiers are used to record the event on a photographic film. The pictures are automatically scanned by a Flying-Spot-Digitizer and the scanning data are stored on magnetic tape. In this paper the analysis of the FSD data, i.e., the track finding method and the measurement of the avalanche density, are described. The results obtained with this automatic method show that both the efficiency of track finding and the reliability of ionization measurement are good, down to avalanche densities as low as 1/10 of the ionization expected for minimum ionizing charge-one particles.

Abstract

We have searched for possible narrow resonances produced in the reaction e + e − → hadrons, at Adone, in the mass interval. 1.45–1.92 GeV. Within the present statistics, no evidence has been found. We obtain an upper limit on the energy integrated resonant cross section of about 6% of the corresponding J/ψ(3.1) value.

Abstract

By using three different c.m. energies in pp interactions,\(\sqrt s \), 44, 62 GeV, it is shown that the average charged-particle multiplicity sclaes with\(\sqrt s \) once the correct hadronic energy available for multiparticle production,Ehad, is used as basic parameter. The pp data, analysed in this way, are compared with e+e− data at equivalent energies. The agreement is very satisfactory.

Abstract

The cross section for the reaction e + e - →π + π - π + π - has been measured at the e + e - storage ring Adone, in the to tal c.m. energy range 1.42–2.20 GeV. The peak and the following descent of the ϱ′(1600) resonance is observed. Using also lower energy data, and assuming that only one resonant amplitude contributes to the observed cross section, the parameters of the ϱ′(1600) are deduced.

Differential cross sections for single photoproduction of neutral pion on neutron have been measured at different c.m. angles for photon energies, between 450–800 MeV. The results are compared with the existing theories and seem to favour the hypothesis of an appreciable presence of the P 11 (1470) in the neutron photoexcitation.

Abstract

Multihadronic production has been observed at the Adone e + e − storage ring, in the c.m. energy range 1.4 - 2.4 GeV. The cross sections for the reactions e + + e − → 2 π ± + nπ o (1 ⩽ n ⩽ 4) and e + + e − → (4 π ± + nπ ± ) (0 ⩽ n ⩽ 2) have been measured, assuming that the produced particles are only pions with a pure phase space momentum distribution.

Abstract

Cross sections for the photoproduction of neutral pions have been measured at the 1.1-GeV Frascati electron synchrotron for bombarding photon energies $k$ between 400 and 800 MeV and for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ c.m. angles of ${{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{*}={90}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}, {120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}, \mathrm{and} {135}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$. The main feature of the experiment is good resolution in incident photon energy. The results are in good agreement with the existing theories in the energy range of 450 to 550 MeV. The cross sections exhibit a smooth behavior as a function of energy for $k=400\ensuremath{-}600$ MeV. No immediate evidence is found of a contribution of the ${P}_{11}$ resonance. An anomaly at the limit of statistical significance appears for $k\ensuremath{\simeq}700\ensuremath{-}740$ MeV, indicating a possible structure of the so-called second resonance. We attempt to interpret the observed anomaly as a reflection of the sharp opening of the $\ensuremath{\eta}$ production channel ($\ensuremath{\eta}$ cusp effect).

Abstract

The MACRO detector is presently under construction, its installation at Gran Sasso being planned to start in September 1987. It is a large area detector, the acceptance for isotropic particle fluxes being around 10 000 m 2 sr, designed to search for rare phenomena in the cosmic radiation. It makes use of three detection techniques: liquid scintillator counters, plastic streamer tubes, and track-etch. It will perform a search for GUT monopoles (or any supermassive charged penetrating particle), a survey of cosmic point sources of HE gammas and neutrinos, a systematic study of the penetrating cosmic ray muons, and will be sensitive to neutrino bursts from gravitational stellar collapses in the Galaxy.

Abstract

The decay J/ Ψ (3100)→ η (958) + γ has been searched for at tthe Adone e + e +- storage ring. No candidate event has been found. This allows to set an upper limit of 1.0 keV (90% C.L.) for this decay partial width.

Abstract

With the aim of discussing the effect of the possible sources of systematic uncertainties in simulation models, the analysis of multiple muon events from the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso is reviewed. In particular, the predictions from different currently available hadronic interaction models are compared.

Abstract

We have analyzed a sample of 1.8 x 10(6) muons with E(mu) greater-than-or-similar-to 1.3 TeV collected by the first and second supermodules of the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso during the period 1989 February to 1991 February. We have searched for an excess of muons of celestial origin over cosmic-ray background. Our search for steady sources in solid angle bins of DELTAOMEGA almost-equal-to 3.0-degrees x 3.0-degrees in the declination range -5-degrees less-than-or-equal-to delta less-than-or-equal-to 90-degrees was negative; the upper limit with 95% C.L. to the muon flux at mid-latitudes (delta approximately 45-degrees) is J(mu)steady less-than-or-similar-to 2 x 10(-12) cm-2 s-1. In addition, we have searched for muon excesses modulated by the orbital period of selected X-ray sources, including Cyg X-3, Cyg X-1, Her X-1, 4U 0115+63, and 4U 1907+09. For Cyg X-3 we obtained an upper limit with 95% C.L. of J(mu)mod less-than-or-equal-to 8.8 x 10(-13) cm-2 s-1. Further, we have no evidence of any bursting activity from Cyg X-3, during our search period, which includes the radio outburst of 1991 January.

Abstract

We discuss the preparation of different samples of the CR39 polymer and a number of tests performed with high energy heavy ions. The quality and reproducibility of the manufactured CR39 is discussed as well as the implications for a large area detector (MACRO) used for a search for cosmic magnetic monopoles.

Abstract

In this letter we present the results of the search for massive magnetic monopoles in the penetrating cosmic ray radiation using the various subdetectors of the MACRO apparatus, during the period 1989-1995. Flux limits are given for the beta = v/c range 4 x 10(-5) < beta < 1; for 10(-4) < beta < 10(-1) the limits are below the Parker bound, similar to 10(-15) cm(-2)s(-1)sr(-1). Abstract

The MACRO experiment has been running as a supernova neutrino detector since 1989 and is sensitive to the whole galaxy since the beginning of 1992. A galactic supernova would produce some hundreds of events in the detector, We describe our stellar gravitational collapse online monitors and alarm system, and present the results of a search for neutrino bursts from supernovae during a period of 1.5 yr. The cross section for the reaction e++e−→e++e−+γ has been measured at the Adone storage ring. The results in agreement with the QED predictions, establish a new limit for the mass and the coupling constant e ∗ e γ of a heavy electron e∗.

Abstract

The differential cross section at several c.m. angles for inelastic eta meson photoproduction on deuterium has been measured at an incident photon energy of about 850 MeV. Our results indicate that the photoproduction cross section on the neutron is quite similar to that on the proton. Both these c.m. angular distributions are consistent with isotropy. Remarks are made on the relative contribution of the isoscalar and isovector parts of the eta photoproduction amplitude.

The ratio of charged-to-total energy in multiparticle hadronic systems produced in pp interactions has been measured. The analysis has been performed using our technique of subtracting the “leading” baryon effects. The results are compared with e + e − annihilation data.

Abstract

A search for possible new resonances produced in e + e - annihilation at Adone has been performed in the mass region 2520–2990 MeV. No evidence has been found for new resonances. We obtain an upper limit on the energy integrated resonant cross section of about 6% of the J/ψ (3100) corresponding value.

Abstract

A world review is presented of the «leading»-particle effect in hadron physics: baryon-baryon, baryon-antibaryon, mesonbaryon and photon-baryon processes are studied and compared with hadron production from an initial state which does not contain any hadron. In this latter case the «leading» effect is not present. It is shown that the «leading»-particle effect is fully present even in hadron interactions initiated by neutrinos. The importance of the «leading» effect in hadron physics is discussed.

Abstract

Summary. The single.particle inclusive transverse-momentum distribution in the multiparticle systems produced in low-1~T proton-proton interactions at ~- 30 and 62 GoV has been studied. The analysis was performed removing from the final state the leading proton and redefining the effective hadronie energy available for particle production. Excellent agreement for effective hadronic energies up to 13 GoV is found between (pp) and (e+e-). At higher energy the (pp) data show a less pronounced growth than the (e+e -) data.

Abstract

The WA44 experiment is a search for free quarks (1/3, 1/2) produced in high energy v interactions. High detection efficiency for quarks is achieved by measurement of primary ionization in a triggered large avalanche chamber which, moreover, provides the high spatial resolution required for high multiplicity jet-type events. The chamber is 2.35 × 1.25 × 0.6 m3 and is flushed with a mixture of pure He-Ne (80-20%). The chamber is photographed with 3 cameras using image intensifiers giving 1.4 mm resolution in space. The optical gain is such that the chamber can be operated well below the streamer threshold. In order to obtain precise primary ionization measurements and high rejection coefficient for quark detection against charge 1 particles, a good high voltage pulse stability (< 1% FWHM) and a long memory time (at least 100 μs) are essential and have been achieved. Data taking is in progress. Preliminary results show that the avalanche chamber is an excellent triggerable detector for combining good spatial multitrack resolution and accurate primary ionization measurement.

Experimental results for the reactions e+e− → e+e− + X are presented for X = e+e−, μ+μ−, π+π− , ″'. A tagging technique has been used to detect final electrons and positrons. A QED test is performed and an upper limit of 20 keV is derived for the partial width Γ(η′ → γγ).

Abstract

We report experimental results on the cross section for the reaction e + e − → hadrons as a function of the total c.m. energy in the range W = 1.42–3.09 GeV. The results, combined with those already existing below the charm threshold, clearly indicate a structure for R ( W ) = α ( e + e − → hadrons)/ α ( e + e − → μ + μ − ) in that energy region.
