We have realized the world's largest-size 40-in.-diagonal TFT-LCD by seamless panel-connection technology. This technology can easily make a large display degrading affecting the advantages of TFT-LCDs. In this paper, we discuss several techniques for a seamless connection.

The PCM tape recorder should perform the traditional function of recording for practical use in studios. Along with electronic editing, tape-cut editing will also play an important role in studio work. Advantages of tape-cut editing are as follows. 1) Editing time can be minimized if splice points are not numerous. 2) Editing can be performed with only one PCM deck without expensive electronic equipment. This paper describes signal processing, block diagram, performance, and experimental data of digital tape-cut editing.

The relationship was examined between the severity of ulcerated lesions and immune responses in 19 Ecuadorian patients in the early stages of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis. As an immunological assay, the humoral immune response was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the cell-mediated response by delayed type skin test for leishmanial antigen (leishmanin test). There was a statistically significant correlation (r = 0.61, P less than 0.01) between the total area of ulcerated lesions and the reciprocal titre of ELISA in identical subjects. However, no significant difference was observed in the ELISA titre between patients with a single lesion and those with multiple lesions (chi 2 = 7.06, df = 5, P greater than 0.2). A correlation (r = 0.48, P less than 0.05) was observed between the area of lesions and the intensity of leishmanin test; further, the ELISA titre also correlated to the intensity of leishmanin test in the identical subjects (r = 0.71, P less than 0.01). These results suggest that the severity of ulcerated lesions relates to the activation of both the humoral and cell-mediated immune systems in the early stage of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Fifteen patients with malignant spinal metastases underwent fixation of the spine using metallic implants and bone cement. The operation provided considerable relief of pain in all 15 cases and a significant improvement in mobility in 12 cases. These results compared favourably with 77 patients with fatal metastatic cancer of the spine who were treated without spinal surgery. The technique seems to be best indicated for use in patients with breast and thyroid cancer with a relatively prolonged terminal course.

1. Rats were irradiated by 200 R of X ray on day 17 (the 18th day) of gestation through the body wall of the mother. When they underwent the following electrophysiological tests at the age of 3-4 mo, the somatosensory cortex showed a lack of layers II, III, IV, and Va, as described by previous investigators (3, 4). 2. Spike responses to quick whisker deflections were recorded from single cells in the somatosenory cortex of normal and prenatally X-irradiated rats. 3. In normal animals, single units often responded to several whiskers, but the magnitudes (response latency and firing probability) of the responses were graded around a whisker in the "center" of the field that gave rise to the strongest response. During electrode penetration perpendicular to the cortical surface, such a center remained unchanged or shifted to another whisker that was immediately adjacent. As for the large-sized, initially positive unitary spikes (typically 2 mV or higher) sampled in this study, no systematic change in the response latency, the size of receptive field, or response probability was detected during the penetration. 4. The above description holds also for the irradiated rats except that the response latency was prolonged when compared to the normal controls. 5. Cortical laminar analysis of field potentials revealed that while the earliest electric sink appeared in layer IV in the controls, that in the irradiated rats was observed in layer Vb. However, there was no difference in the latency of these potentials between the two groups, suggesting that vibrissal sensory signals reach the cortical level normally even in the irradiated rats. The prolonged latency of the irradiated cortical neuronal response could thus be ascribed to an abnormal intracortical delay, which was most likely associated with the failure of development of layer IV stellate cells in these preparations. 6. A possibility as to how the layer IV stellate cells are involved in input-output relationships in the normal somatosensory cortex is presented and discussed.

The authors prepared a fibrous carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) cation exchanger, the new adsorbent for column chromatography of proteins, by our own method, and investigated the degree of substition (D.S.), physical properties, titration curves and protein adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. It was shown that this fibrous CMC possess high capacity for the adsorption of protein, and was excellent cation exchanging adsorbent for column chromatography of proteins. 2. The average amount of protein adsorbed by this adsorbent was 0.5g of protein per 1g of fibrous CMC. It is very high adsorption capacity, moreover recovery of adsorbed protein on the column in effluent solution exceeded 93%, and this adsorbent will be very useful in preparation and purification of proteins or enzymes. 3. By the chromatographic resolution of newly found flavoprotein of egg white on the fibrous CMC column, it was confirmed that protein moiety of this flavoprotein consist of two components. The apo-proteins of this flavoprotein were discussed.

We first used the closed irrigation-suction treatment in 1970.From 1970 until June 1973, 55 patients have been treated by this technic, 46 of 55 were followed for more than five months. Of 46, 41 were successful in that wound healed and no further evidence of drainage or intection occured. We pointed out many problems of this technic and improved the method. To improve the effect of the irrigation, we made a 4 channel method utilizing the double silicon tube, and succeeded in preventing the obstruction of the tube.

卵白から新しいFlavoproteinを約0.8%の収量で得, そのflavin部分はfree riboflavinであることを認めた。卵白flavoproteinはovomucoid fraction中に集中して存在することを確認した。ovomucoid fractionはpulp状CMC column chromatography及びelectrophoresisによつてI∿Vの5成分から成ることを確認した。M. B. Rhodesらのplate testを改良した筆者らの独特の方法でovomucoidのantitryptic activityを測定して, ovomucoid 5成分のうちantitryptic activityはcomponent I, II, III, の3成分蛋白中にあり, component IIIがその主要部分であることがわかると同時にIV, V componentにはantitryptic activityが全然なかつた。ovomucoidのantitryptic activityは熱に対して可成り安定で90°20分の熱処理は活性に全然影響を与えず, 100°5分の熱処理によつてその活性は3/4に低下した。ovomucoid 5成分のうちIV, V, componentとfree riboflavinとが結合したものが卵白中の新しいFlavoproteinであることがわかり, これに対して筆者らはFlavomucoid K_1及びK_2と命名した。, 1 The new flavoproteins have been obtained from egg white and yield of this protein was 0.8% of whole egg white protein and it recognized that flavin moiety of this flavoprotein is free riboflavin. 2 It is confirmed by its physico-chemical properties, that the new flavorotein is concentrated in the ovomucoid fraction. 3 By means of fibrous C. M. C. column chromatography, and electrophoresis, it has been confirmed that the ovomucoid fraction is consist of five components. 4 Antitryptic activities of ovomucoid fraction have been determined by the authors method which modified the spot plate test of M. B. Rhodes et al, it is found that antitryptic activities have been existed in the component I, II and III, and component III protein is main component of antitryptic activity of ovomucoid while component IV and V have no activity. 5 The antitryptic activity of ovomucoid is not effected by heat treatment at 90℃ for 20 minutes but by the treatment at 100℃ for 5 minutes, its activity has been reduced to 3/4 of original activity. 6 The authors recognized that the newly found flavoprotein of egg white is composed of IV and V component of ovomucoid and free riboflavin. The authors named these two kinds of new flavoproteins as flavomucoid K_1 and K_2 respectively.

C.カラムクマトグラフィーにより追跡し以下の結果を得た。卵白は孵卵中胚に吸収されてその量を減じて行き, 孵卵開始後15日目位で分離不可能となる。孵卵6日目頃から, それまで卵白中に存在しなかつたAnionic proteinが出現する。Ovomucoid fractionは6日目頃から全卵白蛋白量に対する比率が増加する。Ovalbuminは孵卵の進行と共にA_1に対するA_2+A_3の比率が増加する。Conalbuminは孵卵の進行と共に減少しlysozymeは増加する。, By means of fibrous CMC-Column chromatography the relative changes in individual egg white proteins of fertilized hen's egg during the course of incubation, were studied. The results summarized were as follows. 1. The egg white was absorbed by embryo and decreasing its quantity during incubation. Finally after two weeks of incubation, the most of egg white was absobed and could not separate it. 2. On the 6th day from the start of incubation, the anionic protein was appeared which has not been existed in the egg white originally. 3. Ovomucoid fraction was increased after 6th day of incubation 4. Ratio of A_2+A_3/A_1 in the ovalbumin fraction was increased along with the proceeding of incubation. 5. Conalbumin was decreased and lysozyme was increased during the incubation.

A new human cell line (TC-S) was established from a metastatic lesion of a inguinal lymph node of a large-cell keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. The population doubling time was 29.8 hours. Plating efficiency was 85.5%. The mitotic coefficient was 3.2%. The generation time was about 27 hours, (G1 phase 16 hours, S phase 4 hours, G2 phase 6 hours and M phase 1 hour). Electron microscopically, desmosomes, developed tonofilaments and macronucleoli were found. After subcutaneous transplantation into nude mice, the cells grew into solid tumors that killed the mice. Histopathologically, the tumors formed in nude mice showed keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma, which resembled those of the original cervical cancer and the metastatic lymph node. The TC-S cells produced carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). By the scanning microdensitometric and flow cytometric analyses, the TC-S was classified as hyperploid with a hyperquadroploidy mode.

Thymocytotoxic autoantibodies were demonstrated in sera of C3H/HeJms, C57BL/6J, and ddY mice infected with 50 cercariae of Schistosoma japonicum, using C57BL/6J thymocytes as target cells in the trypan blue dye exclusion test. Kinetic study revealed that thymocytotoxic activity began to increase at week 6 of infection, reached a maximum at 8 weeks, and thereafter decreased gradually. Thymocytotoxic antibodies had an optimal reactivity at 4 degrees C and were sensitive to 2-mercaptoethanol treatment, suggesting that they were immunoglobulin M in nature. The cytotoxicity was completely abolished by absorption with C57BL/6J thymocytes but not with S. japonicum parasites or eggs. The antigen reacting with thymocytotoxic antibodies was found in the thymus, brain, spleen, and, to a lesser extent, kidney and liver. In parallel with the appearance of thymocytotoxic antibodies, the increase of background plaque-forming cells to trinitrophenyl, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and sheep erythrocytes in the spleen of S. japonicum-infected mice suggested that te induction of thymocytotoxic antibodies may be the consequence of polyclonal B-lymphocyte stimulation by the infection.

The following studies were performed to develop a new technique of hyperthermia by vascular catheterization for the treatment of malignant neoplasm. A balloon catheter was inserted into the artery of a cancer-affected organ and inflation of the balloon temporarily occluded the artery, after which an anticancer drug solution warmed to 45 degrees C was infused. The purpose of this technique was to enable the solution to arrive at the affected area undiluted by blood. It would then remain in the organ and act on the lesion. When OK-432 was intravenously administered to induce pyrexia of 40 degrees C, followed by the above-mentioned arterial infusion, it was expected that the effects of hyperthermia and chemotherapy would be synergistic. In cases of liver cancer and urinary bladder cancer subjected to the arterial infusion of warmed anticancer drugs, however, the temperature in the hepatic vein increased by only 0.5 degree C while that in urethra near the tumor increased by only 1 degree C. In the future, further improvement needs to be made to obtain effective local heating with this technique.

A 48-year-old man was admitted because of ischialgia. The CT scanning revealed tumors in the right pelvic cavity and the gluteal muscle. The bodies of Sparganum proliferum and granulation tissues were revealed by the tumor biopsy. In this hospital course, the chest roentgenogram revealed patchy infiltrative shadows in both lungs and left pleural effusion while chest CT scanning revealed multiple nodular shadows. Eosinophils increased in the peripheral blood and transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) showed non-destructive vasculitis with eosinophilic infiltration. The pulmonary lesion was diagnosed as intrapulmonary migration of Sparganum proliferum and PIE syndrome caused by this worm. Thiabendazole and prednisolone were administrated, but he died of pulmonary embolism.

We examined the usefulness of ultrasonography (USG) for endometrial cancer screening in postmenopausal women. 207 postmenopausal women were ultrasonographically examined. The endometrial echo was classified into 4 types: 1, anechoic; 2, hair-line; 3, linear; and 4, navicular, and was compared with histological findings. No abnormal histological findings were observed in the cases showing type 1 and 2. On the other hand, abnormal histological findings including endometrial hyperplasia, atypical hyperplasia, and endometrial cancer, were seen in 57.7% (15/26) of type 3 cases, and 65.6% (21/32) of type 4 cases. Furthermore, type 3 and 4 women had enlargement of the uterus, and an increased incidence of postmenopausal bleeding. Positive rates in the progesterone challenge test (PCT) and karyopicnotic index (KPI) were higher in type 3 and 4 cases than in type 1 and 2. It was concluded that USG is able to accurately determine the endometrial condition and is useful for identifying high-risk patients in endometrial cancer screening.

Severe renal impairment and massive proteinuria are rare in pheochromocytoma. We report the case of a patient with pheochromocytoma who repeatedly developed episodes of acute renal deterioration and transient, massive proteinuria. Each episodes followed hypotensive periods, two of which seemed to be induced by administration of metoclopramide. The pathogenetic mechanisms of acute renal deterioration and proteinuria are discussed.

Five patients with segmental obstruction of the hepatic inferior vena cava associated with Budd-Chiari syndrome were successfully treated by percutaneous transluminal angioplasty using Gruntzig balloon catheters. Three or four balloons were used simultaneously to achieve sufficient dilatation. Long-term patency was obtained in all 5 cases without serious complications. This procedure may be applicable to other portions of the venous system as well.

Heterophile antibodies (Ab) against sheep red blood cells were shown to have developed in mice experimentally infected with Schistosoma japonicum (SJ). Incidence of the elevated Ab levels was markedly high in the period of 6-10 weeks following infection. By means of absorption tests, the heterophile Ab could be distinguished from classical human heterophile Ab of Paul-Bunnell, Hanganutzui-Deicher, and Forssman types. Antigen(s) cross-reactive with the heterophile Ab was found only in goat red blood cells (RBC) but absent on RBC of other species, in various tissue homogenates of syngeneic mice, or in SJ parasites and their eggs. The Ab activity seems to be mainly localized in immunoglobulin classes other than IgM.

Neuronal activity of the dorsal amygdala, the substantia innominata and the ventral putamen during bar press operant behavior was analyzed to investigate neuronal responses in various affective situations. Of 1507 neurons recorded, 431 responded to some stimuli and were classified into 6 functional categories: (1) 64 (4.2%) indiscriminately and transiently responded to various stimuli; (2) 98 (6.5%) responded to various objects depending on their significance, whether rewarding or punishing; (3) 44 (2.9%) clearly responded only to certain food or objects associated with potables, but not to both; (4) 16 (1.1%) responded to both food and objects associated with potables; (5) 35 (2.3%) responded primarily at the sight of certain nonfood; (6) 66 (4.4%) responded primarily in the ingestion phase. Relations between function and topography are dis- cussed. The results suggest that the dorsal AM and adjacent areas might be important in recognizing the biological significance of objects and in procuring food.

A number of reports of regional intraarterial infusion chemotherapy for malignant tumors have been published. Balloon occluded arterial infusion was newly developed by us. Balloon catheter is used for temporal occlusion of the hepatic artery during intraarterial infusion of anticancer drugs. Interruption of the arterial blood flow keeps the drugs at high concentration for a long time in the distal artery to the occluded portion. This procedure has been performed in 87 cases of hepatomas and metastatic liver cancers with the sufficiently good results.

Umbilical venous blood, obtained immediately after the delivery of 71 non-complicated pregnants between 38 and 42 weeks of gestation, was investigated for the variation in growth hormone and prolactin levels in the serum. Growth hormone and prolactin levels remained almost constant during the observed period of the gestation. Further, it was shown that while growth hormone levels did not significantly vary through the 24-hour period, prolactin levels significantly did. In prolactin levels, the maximum value at 2 approximately 4AM was significantly about 2 times higher than the minimum value at 6 approximately 8 and 8 approximately 10AM. The levels did not vary through 2 approximately 4 and 10 approximately 12 PM period. These suggest that circadian periodicity exists in the fetal prolactin secretion, but not in the growth hormone, and in addition, the periodicity is not affected by labor and delivery.

A case of bilateral renal angiomyolipoma without tuberous sclerosis is reported. A 49-year-old woman was admitted to the general practitioner with a sudden onset of severe left flank pain. An excretory urogram and ultrasonogram revealed an enlargement of the left kidney. She was subsequently referred to our clinic for further investigation and treatment. Computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging using Tl-weighted image showed several tumors with a fatty, dense area in the bilateral kidney. An arteriogram demonstrated a hypervascular renal mass with aneurysms in her left kidney. Diagnosis of bilateral renal angiomyolipoma was confirmed by percutaneous needle biopsy. Superselective embolization of the tumor was successfully performed, preserving normal renal tissue. Gelatin sponges containing Carboquone (CQ sponge) were used as embolic material. Angiomyolipoma has become relatively easy to diagnose by CT, ultrasound, MRI and so on. However, there are some cases of angiomyolipoma which are indistinguishable from renal cell carcinoma using these modes of testing. Therefore, in selecting a conservative management, we indicated that percutaneous biopsy or open biopsy should be done to confirm the results of the above procedures. Moreover, therapeutic embolization for angiomyolipoma was concluded to be very useful.

The effects of an anabolic steroid on the immune activity and clinical condition of patients with cancer of the uterine cervix were studied. The effects of the steroid on tumor growth were also studied in animals. The results obtained demonstrated that the anabolic steroid (1) enhanced the activity of macrophages and cell-mediated immune activity, (2) reduced the incidence of post-operative infection, (3) reduced pose-operative loss of weight of patients due to the intrinsic anabolic activity of the steroid, and (4) did not exert any influence on tumor growth. Judging from these results, administration of the anabolic steroid would appear to be effective for the improvement of the general condition of cancer patients following surgery or in terminal cases.
