The hypothalamus supports basic motivational behaviours such as mating and feeding. Recording directly from the posterior inferior hypothalamus in a male patient receiving a deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode for the alleviation of cluster headache, we tested the hypothalamic response to different classes of motivational stimuli (sexually relevant: pictures of dressed and undressed women; pictures of food) and pictures of common objects as control. Averaged local field potentials (LFP) to sexually relevant stimuli were characterized by a biphasic significantly enhanced response (relative to objects; bootstrapping statistics) with a first phase starting at around 200 ms and a second phase peaking at around 600 ms. Sexually relevant stimuli also showed a greatly enhanced positivity relative to other stimulus classes in surface event-related potentials in a group of 11 male control participants. It is suggested that the hypothalamus is involved in the recruitment of attentional resources by sexually relevant stimuli reflected in this surface positivity. In a second session, the response to food stimuli relative to objects was tested in two states: after fasting for 14 h, LFPs to food and object stimuli showed significant differences in between 300 and 850 ms, which disappeared after a full high-calorie meal, thus replicating classic studies in monkeys [Rolls et al., Brain Res (1976) 111:53-66]. The current data are the first to demonstrate hypothalamic responses to the sight of motivational stimuli in man and thus shows that recording from DBS electrodes might provide important information about the cognitive functions of subcortical structures., (Copyright © 2011 IBRO. Research has suggested that during reading, parafoveal information pertaining to the next word in a line might be, at least partially, processed. We used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to examine this issue. Volunteers read sentences presented word-by-word at fixation with each word flanked bilaterally on its right by the next word in the sentence and on its left by the preceding word. Infrequently, the right flanker was replaced by a word that was semantically incongruous with the ongoing sentence context. N400 amplitudes to the critical triads were smaller when the right flanker was contextually congruent than incongruent, indicating that parafoveal information was extracted and quickly and incrementally integrated within the evolving sentence representation., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Speech perception is an essential part of social interaction. Visual information (lip movements, facial expression) may supplement auditory information in particular under inadvertent listening situations. Schizophrenia patients have been shown to have a deficit in integrating articulatory motions with the auditory speech input. The goal of this study was to investigate the neural basis of this deficit in audiovisual speech processing in schizophrenia patients by using fMRI. Disyllabic nouns were presented in congruent (audio matches visual information) and incongruent conditions in a slow event related fMRI design. Schizophrenia patients (n=15) were compared to age and gender matched control participants. The statistical examination was conducted by analysis of variance with main factors: audiovisual congruency and group membership. The patients' brain activity differed from the control group as evidenced by congruency by group interaction effects. The pertinent brain sites were located predominantly in the right hemisphere and comprised the pars opercularis, middle frontal sulcus, and superior temporal gyrus. In addition, we observed interactions bilaterally in the fusiform gyrus and the nucleus accumbens. We suggest that schizophrenia patients' deficits in audiovisual integration during speech perception are due to a dysfunction of the speech motor system in the right hemisphere. Furthermore the results can be also seen as a reflection of reduced lateralization of language functions to the left hemisphere in schizophrenia.

The mismatch negativity is an electrophysiological marker of auditory change detection in the event-related brain potential and has been proposed to reflect an automatic comparison process between an incoming stimulus and the representation of prior items in a sequence. There is evidence for two main functional subcomponents comprising the MMN, generated by temporal and frontal brain areas, respectively. Using data obtained in an MMN paradigm, we performed time-frequency analysis to reveal the changes in oscillatory neural activity in the theta band. The results suggest that the frontal component of the MMN is brought about by an increase in theta power for the deviant trials and, possibly, by an additional contribution of theta phase alignment. By contrast, the temporal component of the MMN, best seen in recordings from mastoid electrodes, is generated by phase resetting of theta rhythm with no concomitant power modulation. Thus, frontal and temporal MMN components do not only differ with regard to their functional significance but also appear to be generated by distinct neurophysiological mechanisms.

The therapy of executive functions plays an essential role for the functional outcome and the social reintegration. Nevertheless there is a lack of cognitive oriented and evidence-based therapy programs. The purpose of our review is the classification of the present evaluation studies with regard of the principles of evidence based medicine (EbM) and of the content. Besides the EbM criteria the number of participants, the kind and number of interventions, the types of etiology and the standardisation and quality of the outcome parameters are measured. By that, an assessment should be possible, which interventions are successful for what types of dysexecutive syndrome. The present studies belong to three different types of therapy: at first, a therapy form focussing on manipulation and modification of the environment, second, a therapy form using behaviour management and a third form, which is based on practise and cognitive interventions. The heterogeneity of the therapy forms makes different types of evaluation necessary. The evaluation studies reach different classes of evidence. While the cognitive therapy forms reach comparable high evidence classes, the evaluation studies about behaviour management--mostly present as single case studies with individual outcome parameter--reach only low evidence classes. Final, we discuss, which therapy forms are effective using the strong evaluation criteria and at which point further conceptual task and further research is useful.

Objective: Humans need to supervise and adjust their own behavior by means of an error detection and correction system as well as by using externally available information. The purpose of the present study was to compare the electrophysiological effects related to self-generated internal and to external (feedback) information used for performance monitoring., Methods: Fourteen young normal subjects learned to associate each of several line-drawings with either a left-hand or right-hand response. In the experiment proper multi-channel ERPs were obtained time-locked to (a) the line-drawings, (b) the button-press, and (c) subsequent feedback stimuli. Feedback was either affirmative, negative, or equivocal. Event-related potentials were quantified and statistically evaluated using standard methodology., Results: Response-locked ERPs showed a typical error-related negativity (ERN) for erroneous responses. ERPs to negative and equivocal feedback stimuli contained a negativity with a more posterior distribution than that of the ERN, which occurred earlier and had a higher peak amplitude in the equivocal condition. Dipole modeling suggests that this feedback-related negativity is generated by medial prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex areas., Conclusions: Different brain systems support the use of internal and external information necessary for performance monitoring and modification., Significance: The flexible use of internal and external information for performance control is a core executive function. The delineation of the corresponding brain correlates will further our understanding of executive dysfunction in neurological disorders.

The human medial temporal lobe (MTL) system mediates memories that can be consciously recollected. However, the specific natures of the individual contributions of its various subregions to conscious memory processes remain equivocal. Here we show a functional dissociation between the hippocampus proper and the parahippocampal region in conscious and unconscious memory as revealed by invasive recordings of limbic event-related brain potentials recorded during explicit and implicit word recognition: Only hippocampal and not parahippocampal neural activity exhibits a sensitivity to the implicit versus explicit nature of the recognition memory task. Moreover, only within the hippocampus proper do the neural responses to repeated words differ not only from those to new words but also from each other as a function of recognition success. By contrast parahippocampal (rhinal) responses are sensitive to repetition independent of conscious recognition. These findings thus demonstrate that it is the hippocampus proper among the MTL structures that is specifically engaged during conscious memory processes.

Differences in word processing between adult developmental dyslexic (n = 12) and normal readers (n = 12) were studied using event-related brain potentials recorded while subjects performed a recognition memory task. During the first part of the experiment, words were presented consecutively, and within this phase one third of the words were repeated. Subjects had to indicate whether a given word had previously been seen or not. After a delay of 1 hr, a second phase was administered. Here, another list containing 33% old words (presented in Phase 1) and 66% new words was shown and an old/new decision was required. In both categories, half of the words presented in either phase were of high normative frequency, and the other half were of low-frequency in the German language. Recognition performance was superior in normal readers for both high- and low-frequency words. In Phase 1, a fronto-centrally distributed N400 repetition effect discriminated between correctly identified old and new words (new words more negative). This effect was present for dyslexic as well as normal readers and for high- and low-frequency words. Between 450 and 800 ms, a 'P600 old/new effect' emerged (ERPs evoked by old words were more positive than those for new words). This effect was larger for low-frequency words. In Phase 2, an old/new effect was obtained for normal readers only. These findings are discussed in relation to current concepts of dyslexia and of semantic processing.

Objectives: The present investigation explored the electrophysiological correlates of working memory during sentence comprehension., Methods: Event-related brain potentials (ERP) were recorded from 29 channels in 22 subjects, while they read German sentences having subject-first (canonical) or object-first (non-canonical) word orders., Results: Three different ERP effects were observed: a negativity (maximum at Fc5) differentiating unambiguous object-first and subject-first sentences, interpreted as reflecting the demands of the object-first sentences on working memory; a second negativity (maximum at F7) to the subject noun-phrase in object-first sentences, interpreted as indicating retrieval of verbal material. Finally, a parietal positivity was found for ambiguous sentences that turned out to have a non-canonical word order, which was interpreted as indicating revision and reevaluation processes., Conclusions: The present data underscore the different roles of working memory in comprehension.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been related to altered mechanisms of action monitoring and target detection, and it has been hypothesized that hyperactive striatal-cortical circuits constitute the underlying pathophysiology. This study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to explore this hypothesis. A choice reaction time experiment was carried out in a group of OCD patients and a normal comparison group. The P3b component of the ERP to targets was taken as an indicator of the target-evaluation process and the response-locked error-related negativity (ERN) served as an indicator of action monitoring. We hypothesized that the OCD group would show a shortened P3b latency and an amplitude-enhanced ERN. Consistent with our expectations, the P3b latency was shorter and the ERN amplitude was higher in the OCD group. Unexpectedly, we also observed a prolonged ERN latency in the OCD group and a more posterior topography of this component. The data provide partial support for the hypothesis of a hyperactive neural network in OCD. In addition the disorder must involve pathophysiological processes that are presumably related to other aspects of its complex and heterogeneous clinical hallmarks.

We investigated the relative time courses of the accessibility of semantic and syntactic information in speaking and comprehension via event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Native German speakers either viewed a series of pictures (tacit picture naming experiment) or heard a series of nouns (listening experiment) and made dual choice go/nogo decisions based on each item's semantic and syntactic features. N200 peak latency results indicate that access to meaning has temporal precedence over access to syntactic information in both speaking (approximately 80 ms) and comprehension (approximately 70 ms), and are discussed in the context of current psycholinguistic theories.

The mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the auditory event-related brain potential reflects the automatic detection of sound change. MMN to occasionally omitted sounds in a tone series can be used to investigate the time course of temporal integration in the acoustic system. We used MMN to study differences in temporal integration in musicians and non-musicians. In experiment 1, occasionally omitted 'sounds' in an otherwise regular tone series evoked a reliable MMN at interstimulus intervals (SOAs) of 100, 120, 180 and 220 ms in musicians. In non-musicians, MMN was smaller/absent in the 180 and 220 ms SOAs, respectively. In experiment 2, deviance of a tone was induced by presenting tones at a shorter SOA (100 or 130 ms) compared to the standard stimulus (150 ms). Musicians showed a reliable MMN for both deviant SOAs whereas non-musicians showed an MMN only for tones presented 50 ms prior to a standard tone (SOA 100 ms). These results indicate that the temporal window of integration seems to be longer and more precise in musicians compared to musical laypersons and that long-term training is reflected in changes in neural activity.

Background: A recent study in young patients undergoing propofol-alfentanil-nitrous oxide anaesthesia demonstrated implicit memory for stories presented during operation using a postoperative reading speed task. In this study we investigated whether patients who tolerate only small amounts of anaesthetics are prone to develop implicit and explicit memories about intraoperative events., Methods: Thirty patients with poor physical status (ASA III-IV) undergoing cardioverter defibrillator implantation were included in the study. Patients were premedicated with intravenous midazolam and anaesthesia was maintained using propofol and remifentanil infusions. During surgery one of two audio-tapes containing two short stories was played to the patients. Reading speed for the stories played during surgery and two similar stories from the other tape was tested 4 h later. Explicit memory was tested at 4 h and 24 h after audiotape presentation using a structured interview and a forced-choice recognition test pertaining to the story content. Thirty additional awake subjects served as controls., Results: Although half of the patients seemed to be awake one or more times during the operation, no explicit memories of intraoperative events were reported. The forced-choice recognition of the stories was at chance level. No effect on reading speed was found in either the patients or the control subjects., Conclusions: The possible reasons for reduced explicit and implicit memory performance in elderly patients are age and poor physical status of the patients and the modality change between study and test phases. A non-anaesthetised control group of the same age and physical status should therefore be included in all studies of implicit memory.

Objectives: The Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) have been shown to display impaired cognitive and motor inhibition. This study investigated inhibitory mechanisms of motor responses in order to expand the understanding of sensorimotor integration processes in both disorders. We hypothesized that both patient groups would display altered frontal inhibitory activity., Material and Methods: To this end event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in a STOP-paradigm in groups of TS and OCD patients and in a control group. The paradigm required the execution of a motor response after a "go" signal was given and the occasional suppression of this response after a second "stop" signal occurred., Results: Behavioral parameters and Lateralized Readiness Potential (LRP) confirmed that both patient groups were well able to initiate motor responses. "Go" and "stop" stimuli elicited an enhanced frontal negative activity in both patient groups. In addition, "stop" stimuli were associated with a frontal shift of the NoGo-Anteriorization (NGA) in the TS group but not in the OCD group., Conclusions: The data are interpreted to indicate altered frontal inhibitory functions. Similarities and dissimilarities between the findings for TS and OCD are discussed with respect to other pathophysiologic aspects of the disorders.

Prefrontal activation is a consistent finding in functional neuroimaging studies of episodic memory retrieval. In the present study we aimed at a further analysis of prefrontal neural systems involved in the executive control of context-specific properties in episodic memory retrieval using an event-related fMRI design. Nine subjects were asked to learn two 20-item word lists that consisted of concrete nouns assigned to four semantic categories. Ten items of both word lists referred to the same semantic category. Subjects were instructed to determine whether nouns displayed in random order corresponded to the first 20-item target list. The interference evoked by the retrieval of semantically related items of the second list resulted in significantly longer reaction times compared to the noninterference condition. Contrasting the interference against the noninterference retrieval condition demonstrated an activation pattern that comprised a right anterior cingulate and frontal opercular area and a left-lateralized dorsolateral prefrontal region. Trial averaged time series revealed that the PFC areas were selectively activated at the interference condition and did not respond to the familiarity of learned words. These findings suggest a functionally separable role of prefrontal cortical areas mediating processes associated with the executive control of interfering context information in episodic memory retrieval., (Copyright 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

A central question in psycholinguistic research is when various types of information involved in speaking (conceptual/semantic, syntactic, and phonological information) become available during the speech planning process. Competing theories attempt to distinguish between parallel and serial models. Here, we investigated the relative time courses of conceptual and syntactic encoding in a tacit picture-naming task via event-related brain potential (ERP) recordings. Participants viewed pictures and made dual-choice go/no-go decisions based on conceptual features (whether the depicted item was heavier or lighter than 500 g) and syntactic features (whether the picture's German name had feminine or masculine syntactic gender). In support of serial models of speech production, both the lateralized readiness potential, or LRP (related to response preparation), and the N200 (related to response inhibition) measures indicated that conceptual processing began approximately 80 msec earlier than syntactic processing.

Tourette syndrome has been associated with impairments of attentional functions such as distractability, even in subjects without co-morbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Based on the results of earlier research we hypothesized that Tourette syndrome patients might employ altered control mechanisms of attentional processes and have concurrent difficulties in allocating their attentional resources among competing tasks. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in a group of Tourette syndrome patients and in a matched control group during a dual task experiment. This experiment required the simultaneous detection of visual and auditory target stimuli which were manipulated to yield two different difficulty levels each of which were varied orthogonally. The behavioural parameters confirmed the intended performance differences between difficult-to-detect targets and easy-to-detect targets. This was paralleled by lower amplitudes and longer latencies of the corresponding P3b-ERP subcomponents. Although Tourette syndrome patients were unimpaired in overall performance they showed an increased interference of visual task demands with auditory target perception. In parallel they also exhibited a reduced amplitude of the P3b component to auditory targets. The findings show that Tourette syndrome patients are not generally impaired in their dual task performance. The allocation of attentional resources to competing tasks however, is altered. We speculate that this may be related to deficient inhibitory functions.

Study Objective: To compare recovery of psychomotor and cognitive ability after isoflurane and propofol-based general anesthesia., Design: Prospective, blinded interventional study., Setting: University hospital., Patients: 24 ASA physical status I and II patients undergoing embolization procedures for intracranial vascular lesions., Interventions: Isoflurane anesthesia or propofol anesthesia was given to patients., Measurements: Awakening time; early recovery (5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes) was assessed using orientation and Steward tests; medium recovery (30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes) was tested using Controlled World Association (COWAT) and Digit Span tests; late recovery (4 hours, 24 hours) was assessed using a Verbal Learning and Memory Test and three subtests of a computerized attention test battery., Main Results: Awakening time and early recovery of motor and respiratory function did not differ between groups. The propofol group scored worse in COWAT and Digit Span tests up to 60 minutes after anesthesia. Both groups showed an impairment of higher cognitive functions up to 24 hours after anesthesia., Conclusions: Both isoflurane- and propofol-based anesthesia allow early extubation and recovery of basic psychomotor functions. More sophisticated tests show a decline of cognitive functions up to 24 hours after isoflurane- as well as propofol-based anesthesia. Because both anesthetics show similar recovery of psychomotor functions after long duration anesthesia, other factors such as subjective well-being and costs may be considered when deciding between these two anesthetics.

The influence of experimentally induced subclinical hyperthyroidism on cognitive functions was tested using exogenous thyroxine or placebo. In a double-blind cross-over design, 24 healthy young men received either 300 microg of levothyroxine or placebo for two consecutive 3-week periods. Determination of thyrotropin (TSH), total triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) confirmed the induction of subclinical hyperthyroidism. Three weeks after treatment with placebo or T4, subjects were tested in two visual search tasks, one requiring the serial scanning of a stimulus array of eight items in order to detect a missing feature (serial task), while the other task allowed the parallel processing of eight items in order to detect an extra feature. Reaction times varied greatly between the tasks while no effect of T4 medication was revealed on overt search behavior. The late cognitive components of the event-related brain potentials (ERP) were registered during the tasks using a multichannel recording. The late positive component (P300) to target stimuli showed a significant reduction in amplitude in the parallel search task in hyperthyroidism, while for the serial search task a significant frontal negativity was revealed for target stimuli, both suggesting an increased effort to be exerted for the execution of visual search tasks. Thus, short periods of subclinical hyperthyroidism in the range commonly induced in the treatment of thyroid cancer patients induce distinct alterations in brain-electric activity.

Rationale: Oxazepam has been demonstrated to slow reaction times and increase the rate of omission errors in attentional experiments. This suggests that action monitoring might also be impaired., Objectives: The present study used the event-related brain potential (ERP) technique to investigate this hypothesis. The P3b component to targets was taken as an indicator of the target evaluation process, and the response-locked error-related negativity (ERN) served as an indicator of action monitoring. We hypothesized that the amplitudes of ERN and P3b would be reduced as an effect of oxazepam., Methods: A simple "oddball" reaction time experiment was conducted in a double-blind crossover study of 30 mg oxazepam versus placebo. In order to investigate variations in attentional allocation, separate experimental runs were undertaken with target frequencies of 50% and 80%., Results: ERN and P3b amplitudes were lower in the 80% target condition than in the 50% condition. Oxazepam did not affect behavioral parameters but was associated with an ERN of lower amplitude than the placebo condition. ERN amplitude variations between target conditions remained unchanged., Conclusions: Although the intake of 30 mg oxazepam did not impair behavioral performance, measures of the electrophysiological recordings show that action monitoring processes were altered. We argue that this may be related to the anxiolytic properties of the drug and may constitute an important causal factor for behavioral impairments after the intake of oxazepam.

The ERP (event-related potential) violation paradigm was used to investigate brain responses to morphologically correct and incorrect verb forms of Catalan. Violations of stem formation and inflectional processes were examined in separate experimental conditions. Our most interesting finding is that misapplications of stem formation rules elicit an early left preponderant negativity. This complements our previous ERP results on morphological violations in other languages in which misapplications of inflectional rules were shown to produce such effects. We make use of the linguistic distinction between lexically stored and rule-based word forms and suggest a unified interpretation of the experimental results, arguing that these negativities vary as a function of processes involved in morpho-syntactic structure building.

The purpose of this study was to assess possible central side-effects of sildenafil (Viagra) on attention and memory functions. Sildenafil and placebo were administered in young male subjects in a double-blind balanced cross-over design. Behavioral patterns and event-related brain potentials (ERP) were recorded in a spatial auditory attention and a visual word recognition task. While behavioral patterns did not reveal any overt effects of sildenafil, auditory ERPs were indicative of an enhanced ability to focus attention (amplitude enhancement of Nd-effect) and to select relevant target stimuli in the sildenafil condition (P3 component). In the memory task, CNS-effects of sildenafil were evident in a reduction of a negativity in the 150-250 ms range. No overt effects on behavior were observed. Nevertheless, the data reveal CNS-effects of sildenafil necessitating further studies.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded from healthy human subjects while they attended to one of two auditory stimulus channels (defined by location, left and right of a fixation point, and pitch) in order to detect rare target events. The distracting properties of periodic noise (vs. continuous noise, experiment 1) and backward speech (vs. forward speech, experiment 2) presented from a third speaker located behind the subjects were investigated. A typical attention effect with a larger negativity for attended tones was observed in both experiments. Backward speech led to a significantly reduced target detection rate for the first four stimuli after onset of the distractor accompanied by a reduced event-related brain potential (ERP)-attention effect and a reduced fronto-central N2b component for the target stimuli. This indicates that irrelevant information leads to an attention decrement of about 1 s duration.

The aim of this study was to delineate the influence of the emotional content of stimuli to be remembered on the recognition performance of normal subjects by means of the event-related potential (ERP) technique. When words are presented repeatedly, brain responses to repeated and recognized items are characterized by a more positive waveform, referred to as "old/new effect". Words judged for their emotional connotation ("negative", "positive" and "neutral") were presented successively on a video monitor to subjects, who had the task to indicate whether a given word occurred for the first ("new") or second ("old") time within the list by pressing one of two buttons. For each word category, the ERPs of the old words were more positive compared to those of the new items from about 250 ms after stimulus. The old/new effect was significantly enhanced for the negative and positive items compared to the neutral stimuli between 450 and 650 ms after stimulus pointing to a significant influence of the emotional content of words on verbal memory processes. Music perception deficits following acute neurological damage are thought to be rare. By a newly devised test battery of music-perception skills, however, we were able to identify among a group of 12 patients with acute hemispheric stroke six patients with music perception deficits (amusia) while six others had no such deficits. In addition we recorded event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in a passive listening task with frequent standard and infrequent pitch deviants designed to elicit the mismatch negativity (MMN). The MMN in the patients with amusia was grossly reduced, while the non-amusic patients and control subjects had MMNs of equal size. These data show that amusia is quite common in unselected stroke patients. The MMN reduction suggests that amusia is related to unspecific automatic stimulus classification deficits in these patients.

Closed class (determiners, pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions etc. ) and open class (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) words have different linguistic functions and have been proposed to be processed by different neural systems. Here, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in young German-speaking subjects while they read closed class and open class words flashed upon a video-screen. In the first experiment closed class words were sorted into four different frequency categories and open class words into three categories. The words were presented in a list with the subjects' task to detect occasional non-words. A centroparietal negativity (N400) with a peak latency of about 400 ms varied in amplitude as a function of frequency in both classes. The N400 in closed class items, however, was considerably smaller than that in open class words of similar frequency. A left anterior negativity (N280/LPN) showed some degree of frequency-sensitivity regardless of word class. Only for the very high frequency closed class words a frontal negativity with an onset of about 400 ms was obtained (N400-700). This N400-700 effect was replicated in the second study, in which medium frequency closed and open class words and very high frequency closed class words were presented at the fifth position of simple German sentences. It is suggested that neither N400 nor the left anterior negativity (N280/LPN) distinguish qualitatively between the two word classes and thus claims about different brain systems involved in the processing of open and closed class words are not substantiated electrophysiologically. The N400-700 effect is possibly related to specific grammatical functions of some closed class items, such as determiners.

Depressive patients show deficits in memory functions. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Experiments with a special emphasis on the link between emotion and cognition appear challenging. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the emotional content of words on memory in non-medicated depressive patients (n=11) compared with a control group (n=11) utilizing event-related brain potentials (ERPs). In a continuous word recognition paradigm brain responses to repeated items are characterized by more positive waveforms of ERPs. This recognition effect ('old/new effect') has been shown to be sensitive to parameters relevant for memory processing. For the purpose of this ERP experiment visually presented words were classified into three different categories of emotional content. The ERPs for the correctly detected 'old' (repeated) words showed an increased positivity beginning approximately 250 ms post-stimulus, concurring with a good recognition performance. In addition, old/new effect and behavioral data were sensitive to words' different emotional connotations in the control group. In contrast, the depressive patients performed worse and showed no significant old/new effect. Nevertheless, their recognition performance was also enhanced by the emotional content. Furthermore, a differential effect of the emotional content on frontal ERPs was found between groups. In contrast to the control group, a reduced old/new effect indicates a reduced working memory capacity in the moderately depressed patients. This is suggested to be partially due to changes of the emotion/cognition coupling related to ruminations with preferably negative emotional connotation. However, the emotional content also affects recognition performance in the depressive patients.

Two different event-related potential (ERP) components were used to investigate the temporal processing of semantic and phonological encoding during implicit picture naming. Participants were shown pictures and carried out a dual choice go/nogo decision based on semantic information (i.e., whether the picture was of an object or an animal) and phonological information (i.e., whether the picture's name starts with a vowel or a consonant). In addition to the already established lateralized readiness potential (LRP; related to response preparation), we introduce the N200 (presumably related to response inhibition) as a tool for measuring online language processing. Both, the LRP and the N200 data indicated that semantic processing began earlier than phonological processing. The data are discussed in the context of language production models. Therein, the LRP and N200 results, taken together, favor a serial or cascaded processing model of language production in contrast to a parallel processing account.

In the present study we made use of Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) to examine raising and subject control constructions in German. Our most salient result is that the ERPs elicited at the empty subject position of a raising construction are clearly different from those elicited at the corresponding position of an otherwise identical subject control construction, the former producing a stronger P600. We argue that this result provides an electrophysiological correlate of the theoretical distinction between NP trace and PRO.

Perceptual musical functions were investigated in patients suffering from unilateral cerebrovascular cortical lesions. Using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technique, a standardized short test battery was established that covers local (analytical) as well as global perceptual mechanisms. These represent the principal cognitive strategies in melodic and temporal musical information processing (local, interval and rhythm; global, contour and metre). Of the participating brain-damaged patients, a total of 69% presented with post-lesional impairments in music perception. Left-hemisphere-damaged patients showed significant deficits in the discrimination of local as well as global structures in both melodic and temporal information processing. Right-hemisphere-damaged patients also revealed an overall impairment of music perception, reaching significance in the temporal conditions. Detailed analysis outlined a hierarchical organization, with an initial right-hemisphere recognition of contour and metre followed by identification of interval and rhythm via left-hemisphere subsystems. Patterns of dissociated and associated melodic and temporal deficits indicate autonomous, yet partially integrated neural subsystems underlying the processing of melodic and temporal stimuli. In conclusion, these data contradict a strong hemispheric specificity for music perception, but indicate cross-hemisphere, fragmented neural substrates underlying local and global musical information processing in the melodic and temporal dimensions. Due to the diverse profiles of neuropsychological deficits revealed in earlier investigations as well as in this study, individual aspects of musicality and musical behaviour very likely contribute to the definite formation of these widely distributed neural networks.

Unlabelled: Implicit memory of intraoperatively presented stories was recently detected by using the reading speed paradigm during propofol-alfentanil-nitrous oxide anesthesia. Our main goal was to evaluate the reading speed test procedure under another anesthetic regimen, i.e., isoflurane combined with nitrous oxide and alfentanil-infusion. In both experiments, patients were premedicated with oral midazolam. In a previous experiment, patients postoperatively read "old" stories that had been presented during anesthesia quicker compared with "new," unpresented stories. The same study design and test material as in the previous experiment were used. One of two audio tapes with two short stories was played randomly to patients during lumbar disk surgery and to awake controls. Approximately 7 h later, a structured interview and the reading speed test were used to determine whether the participants had any explicit or implicit memories of the presented stories. The results of 30 patients and 30 controls were calculated. Whereas the control participants showed an intact explicit and implicit memory of the previously presented material, no such effect was found in the anesthetized patients. The present experiment shows that changing the main anesthetic in otherwise equal study conditions, i. e., propofol to isoflurane (end-expiratory 0.7%), implicit memory is abolished in anesthetized patients., Implications: We showed that implicit memory during general anesthesia can be abolished by changing the hypnotic anesthetic. Increased postoperative reading speed for stories presented during propofol-alfentanil-nitrous oxide anesthesia was shown in a previous experiment, but not in our study using isoflurane for balanced anesthesia.

A number of recent reports have emphasized neuropyschological symptoms in ALS, including frontal functions, memory and attention. We investigated visual search behaviour of ALS in two types of tasks: a simple, relatively effortless parallel search task and a more complex attention-demanding serial search task. Behavioural parameters and cognitive event-related potentials (ERP) from 19 scalp channels were obtained from 13 ALS patients and 13 matched controls during task performance. ALS patients showed the same target detection rates as controls in the parallel task but were significantly impaired in the serial task. Performance was slower in the patients than in the controls. This slowing could be attributed to cognitive rather than motor impairments, by inspection of the latency of the P3 component, which was delayed by 120 ms in the patients. In addition, the ERPs in the serial task showed a grossly reduced P3 amplitude, indicating disturbed stimulus evaluation in the patients under these conditions. Changes of an early attention-sensitive ERP component suggest an attention deficit underlying the disturbances in search behaviour.

Synesthesia is a perceptual condition in which stimulation in one sensory modality elicits a concurrent sensation in another. The authors studied possible electrophysiological correlates of synesthetic experience in 17 subjects claiming to continuously experience chromatic-graphemical synesthesia and a matched control group. Subjects had to respond to one of four numbers and one of six letters by pressing a button. Even-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from multiple scalp sites. Most synesthetic subjects reported strong synesthetic perceptions during the experiment. The ERPs of both groups showed a distinct P300 component when subjects encountered the assigned target number or letter. Synesthetic subjects had significantly and clearly more positive waveform over frontal and prefrontal scalp regions than control subjects for target and nontarget stimuli. This electrophysiological marker is discussed in terms of cortical inhibition in synesthetic subjects and the role of prefrontal regions in multisensory integration.

This study investigated cross-modal interactions in spatial attention by means of recording event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Noise bursts and light flashes were presented in random order to both left and right field locations separated by 60 degrees in free-field. One group of subjects was instructed to attend selectively to the noise bursts (attend-auditory group), and a second group attended only to the flashes (attend-visual group). On different runs attention was directed to either the right or left field stimuli of the designated modality. In the attend-auditory group, noise bursts at the attended location elicited a broad, biphasic negativity (Nd) beginning at 70 ms. The cross-modal spatial attention effect on the auditory ERPs in the attend-visual group was very similar in morphology, but the Nd was reduced in amplitude relative to the intra-modal effect. In the attend-visual group, flashes at the attended location elicited enhanced early (100-200 ms) and late (200-350 ms) ERP components relative to unattended-location flashes. The cross-modal effect in the attend-auditory group included small but significant enhancements of early components of the visual ERPs. It was concluded that spatial attention has a multi-modal organization such that the processing of stimuli at attended locations is facilitated at an early, sensory level, even for stimuli of an unattended modality.

Background: In the absence of explicit memories such as the recall and recognition of intraoperative events, memory of auditory information played during general anesthesia has been demonstrated with several tests of implicit memory. In contrast to explicit memory, which requires conscious recollection, implicit memory does not require recollection of previous experiences and is evidenced by a priming effect on task performance. The authors evaluated the effect of a standardized anesthetic technique on implicit memory, first using a word stem completion task, and then a reading speed task in a subsequent study., Methods: While undergoing lumbar disc surgery, 60 patients were exposed to auditory materials via headphones in two successive experiments. A balanced intravenous technique with propofol and alfentanil infusions and a nitrous oxide-oxygen mixture was used to maintain adequate anesthesia. In the first experiment, 30 patients were exposed randomly to one of the two lists of 34 repeated German nouns; in the second experiment, 30 patients were exposed to one of two tapes containing two short stories. Thirty control patients for each experiment heard the tapes without receiving anesthesia. All patients were tested for implicit memory 6-8 h later: A word stem completion task for the words and a reading speed task for the stories were used as measures of implicit memory., Results: The control group completed the word stems significantly more often with the words that they had heard previously, but no such effect was found in the anesthetized group. However, both the control and patient groups showed a decreased reading time of about 40 ms per word for the previously presented stories compared with the new stories. The patients had no explicit memory of intraoperative events., Conclusions: Implicit memory was demonstrated after anesthesia by the reading speed task but not by the word stem completion task. Some methodologic aspects, such as using low frequency words or varying study and test modalities, may account for the negative results of the word stem completion task. Another explanation is that anesthesia with propofol, alfentanil, and nitrous oxide suppressed the word priming but not the reading speed measure of implicit memory. The reading speed paradigm seems to provide a stable and reliable measurement of implicit memory.

Binocular depth inversion represents an illusion of visual perception that is sensitive to various behavioural and psychiatric conditions. It is affected by cannabinoids, reflecting associated changes in perception. The present study investigated the differences in binocular depth inversion of different classes of natural and artificial objects and the effect of synthetic delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Dronabinol) on these illusionary perceptions. Using this model, the effects of orally administered Dronabinol on binocular depth inversion were investigated in 17 healthy male volunteers. Pictures from natural and artificial objects were presented stereoscopically and the depth perception of the volunteers was scored in an operationalized way. The timecourse of the effects of Dronabinol on binocular depth inversion was analyzed with regard to the stimulus classes (natural and synthetic objects). Significant differences in binocular depth inversion of the different groups of stimuli were revealed. Objects with a higher degree of everyday familiarity were generally seen as more illusionary than those with a lower degree of everyday familiarity. A strong impairment of binocular depth inversion due to Dronabinol was found in most classes of objects. Analysis of different stimulus classes provides further information on the underlying perceptual processing of binocular depth inversion. An impairment of top-down processing of visual sensory data by Dronabinol is suggested. The anandamidergic system seems to be involved in areas of visual information processing.

To explain processing differences between regular (e.g., start/started) and irregular (e.g., think/thought) word formation linguistic models posit either a single mechanism handling both morphological clusters or separate mechanisms for regular and irregular words. The purpose of the present study is to investigate how these processing differences map onto brain processes by assessing electrophysiological effects of English past tense forms, using the repetition priming paradigm. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 59 scalp sites as 19 subjects read stem forms of regular and irregular verbs from a list of 1152 words; the stem forms were either preceded (5-9 intervening items) by their past tense forms (=primed condition) or by past tense forms of unrelated verbs (=unprimed condition). The difference between the ERPs to the primed and unprimed stems was taken as a measure of morphological priming. We found that the ERPs to regular verbs were clearly different from those to irregular verbs: the former were associated with an N400 reduction in the primed condition; primed irregular verb stems, however, showed no such effect. Control conditions demonstrated that the N400 modulation for regular verbs cannot be attributed to formal (i.e., phonological or orthographical) priming. These ERP effects indicate that regular verbs serve as more powerful primes for their corresponding stem forms than irregular past tense forms, suggesting that regular (but not irregular) past tense forms may be decomposed into stem plus affix., (Copyright 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.)

Twelve patients with an acute cerebrovascular accident were assigned to a group with music perception deficits (amusia, n = 6) or a group without such deficits (n = 6) on the basis of a new test-battery for music-perception skills. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded in an auditory classification task designed to elicit several components; the N1 as a correlate of initial auditory cortical processing, the P3a as an index of automatic attentional orienting, and the P3b as a measure for controlled stimulus evaluation. Patients with amusia showed a significant amplitude decrement for the P3a relative to controls and patients without amusia suggesting an impairment of early stimulus evaluation. P3b was reduced in both patient groups relative to control. These data show that amusia is quite common in unselected stroke patients and suggest deficits of generic rather than music-specific cognitive processes as the underlying cause.

We conceive of time as a sequential order of real-world events, one event following another from past to present to future. This conception colours the way we speak of time ("we look forward to the time") and, as we show here, the way we process written statements referring to the temporal order of events, in real time. Terms such as 'before' and 'after' give us the linguistic freedom to express a series of events (real or imaginary) in any order. However, sentences that present events out of chronological order require additional discourse-level computation. Here we examine how and when these computations are carried out by contrasting brain potentials across two sentence types that differ only in their initial word ('After' X, Y versus 'Before' X, Y). At sites on the left frontal scalp, the responses to 'before' and 'after' sentences diverge within 300 ms; the size of this difference increases over the course of the sentences and is correlated with individual working-memory spans. Thus, we show that there are immediate and lasting consequences for neural processing of the discourse implications of a single word on sentence comprehension.

Objectives: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been shown to cause neuropsychological deficits. The present investigation sought to delineate memory deficits by recording cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs)., Subjects and Methods: Eight ALS patients and 8 matched controls were subjected to a 2-phase recognition memory test. During the first phase words were presented consecutively on a video-screen with one-third of the words being repeated. The subject had to press buttons according to whether a word had been repeated or not. During the second phase (delay 1 h) a second list containing 33% old items from phase 1 and 66% new words was shown with an old/new decision required., Results: ALS patients showed less accurate recognition in the second phase. The ERPs of the controls showed a reliable difference between old and new items in both phases. This difference was nearly absent in the patients in both phases., Conclusion: The ERP pattern suggests abnormal memory processes in ALS. The results are compared with data from similar experiments in Huntington's and Alzheimer's disease and are interpreted in terms of an encoding deficit in ALS.

Evoked potentials were recorded in three different visual experiments in 14 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 14 matched control subjects. Control subjects' evoked potentials (EPs) were characterized by an initial positivity in the 90-140 ms range (P1) at the temporo-occipital site. This component was absent from the group average of the ALS patients as well as the individual patients' EPs. As the P1 is known to emanate from inferior occipito-temporal areas, this finding provides electrophysiological evidence for a cortical involvement in ALS including visual areas.

Recordings of electrical and magnetic brain responses to sensory stimulation provide high-resolution measures of the time course of early perceptual processing. Spatio-temporal analyses of brain activity patterns during the first 200 ms after stimulus presentation have characterized the timing of attentional selection processes and different stages of feature encoding and pattern analyses. Recent studies that incorporate blood flow neuroimaging techniques provide support for mechanisms of early selection of attended visual inputs in extrastriate cortical pathways. The spatial tuning properties of early auditory selection have also been delineated. Electrical and magnetic responses that index the encoding of higher-order pattern information have been identified in both visual and auditory modalities and localized to specific cortical areas.

One of the current issues in the investigation of language by means of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) is whether there is an ERP effect that can be specifically related to the processing of syntactic information. It has been claimed that a late positivity (P600 or SPS-syntactic positive shift) occurring to syntactic violations or ambiguities qualifies as such an effect. In the present investigation we compared ERPs elicited by morphosyntactic (case inflection errors), semantic, and orthographic (misspelled words) violations in a group of young German subjects. All three types of violations gave rise to late positivities having the characteristics of the previously described P600/SPS. In an earlier time window, however, semantic violations were associated with a centroparietally distributed N400 component, whereas syntactic violations gave rise to a negativity of smaller amplitude that had a frontocentral distribution. In light of the present experiment, the view that the P600/SPS as a whole reflects specific syntactic processes appears to be untenable and an alternative interpretation is proposed. The different distributions of the late positive shifts merit further investigation.

The aim of the study was to assess cognitive demands and fatigue during the execution of two different motor tasks. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 15 healthy subjects while they concurrently performed, (1) one of two motor tasks, and (2) a three stimulus (70% standard tones, 15% target tones, 15% novel stimuli) auditory classification task. Both motor tasks required the externally paced adduction of the right thumb with the force task requiring a precise movement (feedback given) with about 50% of maximum force output (6 s on task, 4 s rest) while the displacement task required the same precise movement with only minimal force requirements. In separate sessions, both tasks were performed for about an hour with the subjects concurrently paying attention to the auditory task with button presses required for the target stimuli. This provided a dual task situation with trade-offs in P3b amplitude as a function of difficulty of the primary (motor) task. The P3b to the auditory target stimuli was reduced during the force session compared to the displacement session, indicating that the force-task placed a higher demand on cognitive resources. No differential effect of fatigue (time on task) could be ascertained over six consecutive parts of the session. The P3a component, a putative correlate of orienting of attention, showed a rapid attenuation over time but, attesting to its automatic nature, no effect of concurrent motor task. ERP components recorded timelocked to the movements showed a marked difference between the two tasks with the displacement task giving rise to higher amplitudes. Moreover, only for the force task an influence of time on task (fatigue) on the MP was found. The dual task methodology is a potentially useful tool to disentangle cognitive and motor components of central fatigue.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded while 12 Italian-speaking subjects read correctly and incorrectly inflected verb forms. Participle forms of three types of verbs were investigated: 1st conjugation verbs (parlato 'spoken'), 3rd conjugation verbs (dormito 'slept'), and irregular 2nd conjugation verbs (preso 'taken'). We compared correct and incorrect participle forms; the latter had stem formation errors and/or incorrect participle endings. Event-related potentials (ERP) showed different responses to incorrect regular and incorrect irregular participle forms: incorrect irregulars (*prendato instead of preso) elicited a widespread negativity, whereas incorrect regulars (*parlito, *dormato) produced no effect. This difference replicates previous results on German inflection and supports the linguistic distinction between lexically-based and rule-based inflection.

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from multiple scalp locations from young human subjects while they performed two different face processing tasks. The first task entailed the presentation of pairs of faces in which the second face was either a different view of the first face or a different view of a different face. The subjects had to decide whether or not the two faces depicted the same person. In the second task, pairs of faces (frontal views) were presented with the task of judging whether the expression of the second face matched that of the face. Incongruous faces in the view (identity) matching task gave rise to a negativity peaking at about 350 ms with a frontocentral maximum. This effect was similar to the N400 obtained in linguistic tasks. ERP effects in the expression matching task were much later and had a different distribution. This pattern of results corresponds well with neuropsychological and neuroimaging data suggesting specialized neuronal populations subserving identity and expression analysis but adds a temporal dimension to previous investigations.
