Abstract

We investigated the ability of cortical and subcortical gray matter (GM) atrophy in combination with white matter (WM) integrity to distinguish behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) from Alzheimer's disease (AD) and from controls using voxel-based morphometry, subcortical structure segmentation, and tract-based spatial statistics. To determine which combination of MR markers differentiated the three groups with the highest accuracy, we conducted discriminant function analyses. Adjusted for age, sex and center, both types of dementia had more GM atrophy, lower fractional anisotropy (FA) and higher mean (MD), axial (L1) and radial diffusivity (L23) values than controls. BvFTD patients had more GM atrophy in orbitofrontal and inferior frontal areas than AD patients. In addition, caudate nucleus and nucleus accumbens were smaller in bvFTD than in AD. FA values were lower; MD, L1 and L23 values were higher, especially in frontal areas of the brain for bvFTD compared to AD patients. The combination of cortical GM, hippocampal volume and WM integrity measurements, classified 97-100% of controls, 81-100% of AD and 67-75% of bvFTD patients correctly. Our results suggest that WM integrity measures add complementary information to measures of GM atrophy, thereby improving the classification between AD and bvFTD.

Abstract

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) are the most common types of early-onset dementia. Early differentiation between both types of dementia may be challenging due to heterogeneity and overlap of symptoms. Here, we apply resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study functional brain connectivity differences between AD and bvFTD. Methods: We used resting state fMRI data of 31 AD patients, 25 bvFTD patients, and 29 controls from two centers specialized in dementia. We studied functional connectivity throughout the entire brain, applying two different analysis techniques, studying network-to-region and region-to-region connectivity. A general linear model approach was used to study group differences, while controlling for physiological noise, age, gender, study center, and regional gray matter volume. Results: Given gray matter differences, we observed decreased network-to-region connectivity in bvFTD between (a) lateral visual cortical network and lateral occipital and cuneal cortex, and (b) auditory system network and angular gyrus. In AD, we found decreased network-to-region connectivity between the dorsal visual stream network and lateral occipital and parietal opercular cortex. Region-to-region connectivity was decreased in bvFTD between superior temporal gyrus and cuneal, supracalcarine, intracalcarine cortex, and lingual gyrus. 175. Manganese Oxide Thin Films on Au(111): Growth Competition between MnO and Mn3O4

Abstract

The growth of manganese oxide on a Au(111) support has been examined over a wide range of preparation conditions and film thicknesses by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), electron diffraction, and photoelectron spectroscopy. Two oxide polymorphs were found to coexist on the gold surface. Whereas MnO-type structures prevail at oxygen-lean preparation conditions, annealing in oxygen gives Hausmannite Mn3O4as the dominant phase. Both polymorphs adopt square structures that only permit row-matched growth on the hexagonal gold, explaining the high tendency for oxide dewetting at elevated temperature. The manganese oxide films are thus polycrystalline and consist of a large number of submicrometer grains with different orientations and surface terminations. A variety of square and line patterns were identified on top of the oxide crystallites, all of them being compatible with either the primitive 5.8 × 5.8 Å2cell of Mn3O4(001) or an ordered MnO(100) vacancy structure. STM conductance spectroscopy provides insight into the electronic properties of the Mn–O islands and yields the approximate size of the band gap as well as the energy position of localized Mn 3d levels in the gap region. Our work illuminates the structural and electronic properties of manganese oxide films grown on Au(111) and therefore complements earlier studies performed on Pt(111), Pd(100), and Ag(100) supports.

Abstract

The ISO norm line 9241 states some criteria for ergonomics of human system interaction. In markets with a huge variety of offers and little possibility of differentiation, providers can gain a decisive competitive advantage by user oriented interfaces. A precondition for this is that relevant information can be obtained for entrepreneurial decisions in this regard. To test how users of universal search result pages use those pages and pay attention to different elements, an eye tracking experiment with a mixed design has been developed. Twenty subjects were confronted with search engine result pages (SERPs) and were instructed to make a decision while conditions “national vs. international city” and “with vs. without miniaturized Google map” were used. Different parameters like fixation count, duration and time to first fixation were computed from the eye tracking raw data and supplemented by click rate data as well as data from questionnaires. Results of this pilot study revealed some remarkable facts like a vampire effect on miniaturized Google maps. Furthermore, Google maps did not shorten the process of decision making, Google ads were not fixated, visual attention on SERPs was influenced by position of the elements on the SERP and by the users’ familiarity with the search target. These results support the theory of Amount of Invested Mental Effort (AIME) and give providers empirical evidence to take users’ expectations into account. Furthermore, the results indicated that the task oriented goal mode of participants was a moderator for the attention spent on ads. Most important, SERPs with images attracted the viewers’ attention much longer than those without images. This unique selling proposition may lead to a distortion of competition on markets.

Abstract

Conditions of the prograde, peak-pressure and part of the decompressional P-T path of two Precambrian eclogites in the eastern Sveconorwegian orogen have been determined using the pseudosection approach. Cores of garnet from a Fe-Ti-rich eclogite record a first prograde and syn-deformational stage along a Barrovian gradient from ~670 °C and 7 kbar to 710 °C and 8.5 kbar. Garnet rims grew during further burial to 16.5-19 kbar at ~850-900 °C, along a steep d P/ d T gradient. The pseudosection model of a kyanite-bearing eclogite sample of more magnesian bulk composition confirms the peak conditions. Matrix reequilibration associated with subsequent near-isothermal decompression and partial exhumation produced plagioclase-bearing symplectites replacing kyanite and clinopyroxene at an estimated 850-870 °C and 10-11 kbar. The validity of the pseudosections is discussed in detail. It is shown that in pseudosection modelling the fractionation of FeO in accessory sulphides may cause a significant shift of field boundaries (here displaced by up to 1.5 kbar and 70 °C) and must not be neglected. Fast burial, exhumation and subsequent cooling are supported by the steepness of both the prograde and the decompressional P-T paths as well as the preservation of garnet growth zoning and the symplectitic reaction textures. These features are compatible with deep tectonic burial of the eclogite-bearing continental crust as part of the underthrusting plate (Eastern Segment, continent Baltica) in a collisional setting that led to an effectively doubled crustal thickness and subsequent exhumation of the eclogites through tectonic extrusion. Our results are in accordance with regional structural and petrological relationships, which demonstrate foreland-vergent partial exhumation of the eclogite-bearing nappe along a basal thrust zone and support a major collisional stage at c. 1 Ga. We argue that the similarities between Sveconorwegian and Himalayan eclogite occurrences emphasize the modern style of Grenvillian-aged tectonics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Güterverkehrszentren (GVZ) sollen die Güterströme im Nah- und Fernverkehr bündeln, Teilladungen im Stadtverkehr verringern und der regionalen Wirtschaft Standortvorteile verschaffen. Trotz steigender Anzahl der Planungen und Realisierungen solcher GVZ, besteht dennoch ein Bedarf an Methoden und Modellen zur Unterstützung. Um die bei der Planung von GVZ zu berücksichtigenden komplexen logistischen Zusammenhänge beherrschbar zu machen, beschäftigt sich der Lehrstuhl für Förder- und Lagerwesen in einem Teilprojekt des Sonderforschungsbereiches 559 "Große Netze der Logistik" mit dieser Thematik. Hier werden die einzelnen Verflechtungen systematisiert und Planungshilfsmittel erarbeitet. Im Vordergrund steht hierbei die Modellerstellung für eine GVZ-Grundgestaltung.
