Dorsal root entry zone (DREZ) lesions were made in the cervical dorsal horn in cat and monkey. Terminal degeneration was observed in the lateral cervical nucleus in cat and contralateral VPL in monkey by Fink-Heimer stain. WGA-HRP was injected in the cervical dorsal horn of cat and retrograde labelled cells were observed mainly in the raphe nucleus, parabrachial nucleus, locus coeruleus, Kölliker-Fuse nucleus, Eddinger-Westphal nucleus, and hypothalamic area, indicating that these descending fiber systems are involved by the DREZ lesion. The functional role of these fibers in regard to deafferentation pain relief seems now to be open to discussion.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of steerability of tracked vehicles during uniform turning on level pavement. Considering all possible factors related to steering problems such as track slippage, centrifugal force and vehicle configuration, equations for uniform turning motion have been developed in order to analyze and predict steering dynamics, and steerability in plane motion of vehicles. These equations have been numerically solved by a digital computer in terms of turning radius, side slip angle, shift of instantaneous center of vehicle and track slippage.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of non-stationary motion of a tracked vehicle on level ground. A practical model that includes track slippage, inertia force and the moment of inertia was developed to analyze and predict steering dynamics and steerability on the subject examined. The system of differential equations was programmed and numerically solved on a digital computer, where the inputs are circumferential velocities of right and left drive sprockets. The simulations for J-turn maneuver disclose the effects of initial forward velocities on the transient responses of the track slip velocity, side slip angle, yaw rate, and acceleration of the center of gravity of a tracked vehicle.

The comparison of soot limits of axisymmetrical laminar diffusion flames stabilized in two different flow fields, i.e., stretching and non-stretching (parallel) flow, revealed that soot emission is suppressed more effectively in the former flow. From the experimental results that flame heights were hardly affected by the flow field difference, it was inferred that such an effect of the stretching flow is attributed to the flow acceleration which leads to the shortening of fuel residence time in the soot-forming region and, therefore, to the effective suppression of soot particle growth Burner scale effects on the soot suppression were also investigated using the stretching flow burners of several sizes and some empirical relations at the soot limit were derived among burner size, air flow rate (stretch rate), and fuel flow rate.

It is predicted with use of a simplified model that a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with atoms with Zeeman sublevels in the ground state should exhibit optical tristability via optical pumping. For linearly polarized incident light, three stable states appear in the polarization of the transmitted light; σ+ dominant, σ- dominant, and linear polarizations. This optical tristability is discussed in the context of a butterfly catastrophe.

A VLSI chip mounting structure design method based on computer simulation by the Hitachi Semiconductor Thermal Strength Design System (HISETS) and some examples of simulated results are presented. In the analysis of multilayered chip mounting structures, the elastic, plastic, and creep behavior of bonding layers are taken into account by using HISETS. A good correspondence is found between simulated results and those obtained by testing. Simulated results show that, as VLSI chip size increases, (1) thermal conductance of the structure is improved; however, (2) the chip cracking safety factor, (3) the thermal cycle life of bonding layers, and (4) electrical resistance stability change negatively. For improving factors (2) to (4), it is effective to insert a buffer plate between the chip and its substrate. The appropriate thickness of the buffer plate depends on the desired specifications of the devices. >

Delayed hypersensitivity reaction in mice was commonly enhanced with various anti-cancer agents administered as single or intermittent high doses but not consecutive divided doses. The effect of anti-cancer agents on the delayed hypersensitivity reaction was thought to be due to elimination of suppressor T cell activity.

This paper presents the theoretical and experimental analysis of steering performance of tracked vehicles under lane-change maneuver to reveal controllability and stability in steering motion. The theoretical results of trajectories and required sprocket torques considerably coincide with the test results of actual vehicles and scale model. As the results, it was found that the controllability and stability of high speed tracked vehicles are significantly influenced by various factors such as mode of steering input, steering ratio, vehicle speed and adhesion of track-ground contact area.

This paper presents theoretical and experimental analysis of steering performance of articulated tracked vehicles on level ground. A mathematical model for predicting the steerability of articulated units has been developed and computerized for numerical application. The accuracy of the analog has been verified by scale model tests. From the results of the simulation and scale model tests it was found that steerability was significantly improved and required sprocket torques for steering and track slippage were considerably decreased in articulated tracked vehicles when compared with a single and coupled tracked vehicles.

12 rats were compressed on 5kg/cm2 and were allowed to remain at this pressure for 4 hours and then decompressed. This experiment continued for 6 months repeatedly. Histopathological findings showed that occasional necrosis of chondrocytes in the deep layer of the articular cartilage of the humerus and femur were seen. Rough surface of a superficial layer of the articular cartilage were seen. Scattered necrosis of osteocytes in the shaft were found. Necrotic chondrocytes in the deep layer and necrotic osteocytes in the shaft did not show any positive histochemical reaction for LDH, MDH, SDH and NADHDH.

To gain new insight into the effects of monocular deprivation, we studied the visual cortex of adult cats deprived of vision in one eye. Local field potentials were recorded in response to contrast reversal of square-wave gratings modulated in time either by pseudorandom, m-sequences or periodically. We have found that: (1) stimulation of the retinotopic locus of the recording site elicits responses with abnormal waveforms and long latencies from the deprived eye; (2) stimulation of a remote, non-retinotopic locus elicits responses from the non-deprived eye but not from the deprived eye; (3) the monocularly deprived cortex lacks lateral inhibitory interactions which are characteristic of the normal cortex; and (4) steady-state responses showed little difference in spatial-frequency tuning and contrast sensitivity between the deprived and non-deprived eye, mostly conforming to earlier field-potential data in monocular deprivation. Functional lateral interactions appear to be greatly reduced in monocularly deprived cortex.

Between 1974 and 1987, 14 patients (10 male and 4 female) underwent thoracotomy for treatment of pulmonary mycosis. They were studied on their clinical findings and surgical treatment. The median age was 48 years (range 19 to 71 years). Fourteen cases consisted of 9 aspergillosis and 5 cryptococcosis. None of them was either debilitated or immunosuppressed before falling ill. Five of the 14 patients had other pulmonary disease and 11 had symptoms; i.e. hemoptysis or bloody sputum in 4 cases, chest pain in 3, fever in 3, cough and sputum in 2. Nine aspergillosis consisted of 4 aspergilloma, 3 aspergillus pneumonia and 2 aspergillus empyema. Three cases of aspergillosis occurred in preexisting cavity. Five cryptococcosis consisted of 3 pseudotumorous, 1 disseminated small nodular, and 1 infiltrative types. Preoperative diagnosis was as follows; pulmonary mycosis 5, pulmonary tuberculosis 4, lung cancer 3, empyema 1 and hydropneumothorax 1. Four patients underwent partial resection, 8 lobectomy, 1 pneumonectomy, 1 muscle prombage and thoracoplasty. The prognosis is satisfactory. All patients are alive and has no recurrence. On histopathological examination, in aspergilloma cases, invasion of aspergillus to surrounding lung tissue was not seen. In addition to well-known fact that blood-borne dissemination hardly occurred in aspergilloma in contrast to cryptococcosis. These findings suggest that aspergilloma and solitary lesion of cryptococcosis should be resected, and adjuvant chemotherapy should be accompanied for cryptococcosis.

A case of acute decompression sickness presenting severe clinical features was reported. At the time of autopsy, intra- and extravascular air bubbles were found in various organs. Pulmonary fat embolism was also prominent in association with severe circulatory disturbances of the lungs. The spinal cord showed edematous and congestive swelling which was intimately related to the coagulation of blood within the epidural veins that contained innumerable fat droplets. Intravascular fat seemed to be created in and released from the injured adipose tissue, especially that of the bone marrow during decompression and to have acted as an accelerator of intravascular coagulation. The pathophysiological significance of the fat embolism for the development and the progression of decompression sickness is discussed.

Using the malignant lung tumor xeno-grafts in Nu-mouse, the sensitivity test of anti-cancer drugs was studied. Furthermore, the correlation between its clinical application and chemotherapeutic effects was also looked up. The results obtained were as follows; Take-rate of human lung cancer in Nu-mouse was 53.7% in primary lung cancer and 92.8% in metastatic ones. Those xeno-grafts were able to use as target cell of this test. In these tests, there were some cases which effective drugs were selected, but a few cases which all drugs were non-response. Response rate of primary lung cancer to treat with effective drugs is 25%, but that of metastatic lung tumors with the same treatment is 57%. Therefore, if the aggressive chemotherapy will be trying for malignant lung tumor, this in vivo sensitivity test to select effective drugs shall be one of the useful test.

Cro repressor protein is known to interact with specific sites in the operator DNA. The cro protein of lambda phage was isolated and the mode of its interaction with three different DNA fragment, lambda-OR3 17mer, phi 80-OR2 19mer and CAP binding site 22-mer, were examined by the use of proton NMR. Some of the imino proton resonances of lambda-OR3 shifted and were broadened remarkably on addition of lambda-cro protein, which indicated the induction of conformational change with complexation. In the spectrum of phi 80-OR2 which has a six base pair sequence common to lambda-OR3 the signals of the common base pairs revealed slight shifts on addition of lambda-cro protein. The imino proton signals of the CAP site DNA, however, did not show any change at all on mixing with lambda-cro. Combining the data of photo CIDNP of lambda-cro, we could postulate the mode of interaction between lambda-cro repressor and operator DNA.

As a first step in improving social relations between nonhandicapped and retarded children, this study was designed to investigate children's ability to take a retarded child's role and the effects of two variables on this ability: (a) familiarity with the characteristics of retarded children and (b) similarity of experiences to those of retarded youngsters. Findings were interpreted as indicating that children's ability to take the perspective of retarded children may be a productive area for further research.

Three patients with pulmonary hypertensive crisis (PHC) after open heart surgery for ventricular septal defect are reported. These patients ranged in age from 2 to 47 months, with Rp from 7.0 to 10.6 U.m2, Pp/Ps from 0.67 to 1.0, and Qp/Qs from 1.6 to 1.79. Intraoperative lung biopsy showed pulmonary vascular obstructive disease of Health-Edwards grade 2 in each patient. Atelectasis or pleural effusion on their chest-XP films was found when PHC occurred. The PHC course of the last case was recorded continuously on ABP, PAP and LAP. Administration of prostaglandin-E1 directly through the pulmonary arterial catheter was effective on PHC. Continuous recording of ABP, PAP and LAP during the episode was useful to differentiate PHC from acute left heart failure and/or acute right heart failure.

In June 1987, a 20-year-old man was diagnosed as T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In August, at a nadir period of the remission induction chemotherapy, he complained of high fever and dry cough. A chest roentgenogram also showed a nodular area of increased density in the left upper lobe. Since his clinical state deteriorated progressively despite the administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics, amphotericin B was administered intravenously (with an initial dose of 5 mg/day, increased up to 25 mg/day). Concomitant with bone marrow recovery and continued antifungal therapy, he became soon afebrile and improved over the next 2 months. The infiltrates also began to resolve. Then he abruptly coughed up about 800 ml of blood and suffered from acute respiratory failure. Bronchial arteriographic studies demonstrated active extravasation of contrast medium in the region of the cavity. After therapeutic embolization with Gelfoam, the extravasation was no longer observed. Active bleeding abruptly ceased and had not recurred until the left upper lobectomy which was performed 10 days after the embolization. This case typically demonstrates the value of bronchial arterial embolization in treating massive hemoptysis.
