Social and emotional learning (SEL) is critically important for well-being and success and must not be overlooked when students are learning online. In a qualitative exploration of parents, teachers, and students across the United States, this study investigates the ways in which transformative SEL (Jagers et al., 2019), a form of SEL specifically focused on social justice, can be fostered in online spaces. As our findings suggest, decisions made at the school level have critical potential to either support or hinder this work.

Postgraduate students' university selection decisions are influenced not only by the students themselves or their families, but also by internal university factors. This study evaluated the reasons for pursuing postgraduate education and investigated how family's socioeconomic status and the university's internal environment factors influenced postgraduate students' university choice decisions. The study surveyed 401 first-year postgraduate students across five member universities of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City using a questionnaire and five semi-structured interviews. The empirical data revealed many reasons behind respondents' decisions, with the mean value ranging from 3.49 to 4.14, including reasons such as the desire to continue to learn and progress professionally, to obtain an additional graduate degree, passion for the graduated field, to pursue their own profession, the opportunity to meet and socialize with new friends, to get a job or find a better one, and to change the course of life. In addition, factors such as socioeconomic status (such as family income) and the university's internal environment (such as curricula, facilities, admissions, marketing and communication, service attitude, and learning environment) have also have different positive and negative effects on their judgments about which universities to select. The study also discussed suggestions for higher education managers and other stakeholders.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, digitalisation in the international higher education sector was underlined by migration to online delivery across different educational contexts. However, research into the execution of digitalisation together with its impacts on the teaching and learning of international students in higher education is scattered and fragmented. This study aims to systematically review articles related to these topics based on a four-step refined process: initial search, filtering, screening, and in-depth review. Thirty-five identified articles were used to examine (1) the main forms of digitalisation of teaching and learning for international students, (2) the digitalization-related experience of international students in learning, (3) the opportunities of digitalisation of teaching and learning for international students and (4) the challenges of digitalisation of the teaching and learning for international students. Based on the findings, we discuss the implications of capitalizing on digital technologies and refining pedagogies in online and blended modes of delivery.

Teacher educators at the National Institute of Education, Cambodia, have not been formally prepared or trained as teacher educators whose professional learning needs are crucial for characterizing daily practices. This study examines and elaborates on the desirable needs of teacher educators' professional learning activities and the perception on their professional role. This study employs an explanatory mixed methods research design in which data was collected: (a) in the quantitative phase, from 89 teacher educators who completed a web-based survey, and (b) during the qualitative phase, from 13 teacher educators, who were interviewed regarding their professional learning activities and perceived needs to further their profession. The findings indicated that most teacher educators prioritize "pedagogy of teacher education" and "research knowledge and skills" as desirable needs. To achieve these needs, postgraduate education, would be required. Regarding their perceived roles, teacher educators reported that they viewed themselves as both teachers in a school context and teacher educators. This study addresses a knowledge gap in the field of teacher educators' professional development and learning and highlights how professional learning activities and needs in the Cambodian context can be made transparent to stakeholders to achieve cost-effective and efficient professional learning.

Paired field placement is an important element of teacher education where student teachers can acquire professional cooperative skills through team teaching. However, little is known about challenges that student teachers face during team teaching. Also, knowledge about challenges during the team teaching process (e.g. planning, instruction, reflection) is scarce. This study focuses on pre-primary and primary student teachers' challenges with peer cooperation during team teaching, the problems they face, and how they cope with negative experiences. Data were collected from 30 student teachers through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Results reveal various forms of conflict during different phases of peer cooperation in team teaching such as lack of flexibility due to pressure to follow agreements, or unclear roles and responsibilities. Instruction turns out to be the most challenging phase of team teaching, with lack of compatibility with the peer as the most frequent reason for problems. Reflection is rarely used in a cooperative setting. The findings also revealed the frequent use of reactive strategies to cope with challenges, particularly the strategy of avoiding problems.

International student mobility has traditionally witnessed a global South-North pattern. In recent years, a shift has occurred as the appeal of alternative geographies waxes, with Malaysia being an exemplar of inbound student mobility destination. To facilitate a deep probe of the under-researched global South-South student mobility, this study utilized a qualitative method to delve into 10 Chinese doctoral students' emic perceptions of their sojourn in Malaysia. Guided by a theoretical framework incorporating decolonization and recolonization, this study unpacks how these sociohistorical forces penetrate into and shape the students' preparation and navigation of a doctoral sojourn. Findings of the study reveal that while taking advantage of the Southern niche to yield commensurate benefits, thereby delegitimizing the Western supremacy, the students' make-do mentality and self-subjugating resistance inadvertently reinforce the Western dominance. Besides, these macro effects generate interlocking and conflicting affective consequences, instilling simultaneously positivity and inclusivity, inferiority, and anxiety. Altogether, decolonization and recolonization are concretely registered at the emotional level and bear a broader social significance. This article concludes with an alert and a call to address covert yet compelling inequalities in international student mobility.

To expand our knowledge of lipid and fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis in marine cnidarians, polar lipidomes of hydrocorals were studied for the first time and then compared with those of soft corals from tropical and boreal regions. The structure and content of FAs and molecular species of ethanolamine, choline, serine, and inositol glycerophospholipids (PE, PC, PS, and PI, respectively), and ceramide aminoethylphosphonate (CAEP) in tropical hydrocorals (Millepora platyphylla, M. dichotoma) and the cold-water hydrocoral Allopora steinegeri were determined by chromatography and mass spectrometry. All soft corals and cold-water hydrocorals are characterized by a considerable amount of C20 polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) elongated into C22 PUFAs. In the Millepora species, the high level of 22:5n-6 and 22:6n-3 against the background of the extremely low level of C20 PUFAs may be explained by a high activity of rare Δ4 desaturase. In contrast to hydrocorals, soft corals are able to elongate and further desaturate C22 PUFAs into C24 PUFAs. Allopora and soft corals use C20 PUFAs mainly for the synthesis of PE and PC. The molecular species of PS of soft corals concentrate C24 PUFAs, while in Allopora and Millepora the PS molecules are mainly based on 22:4n-6 and 22:5n-6 acyl groups, respectively. Short acyl groups (C14) dominate the CAEP molecules of Allopora. In all the animals compared, most molecular species of PE and PC are ether lipids, but diacyl molecular species dominate PI. Hydrocorals and tropical soft corals contain diacyl and ether PS molecules, respectively, whereas cold-water soft corals contain a mixture of these PS forms. The high similarity of the alkyl/acyl compositions indicates a possible biosynthetic relationship between PS and PI in hydrocorals. The data obtained in our study will provide a resource to further investigate the lipid metabolism in marine invertebrates.

Epigenetic regulation of key transcriptional programs is a critical mechanism that controls hematopoietic development, and, thus, aberrant expression patterns or mutations in epigenetic regulators occur frequently in hematologic malignancies. We demonstrate that the Polycomb protein L3MBTL1, which is monoallelically deleted in 20q- myeloid malignancies, represses the ability of stem cells to drive hematopoietic-specific transcriptional programs by regulating the expression of SMAD5 and impairing its recruitment to target regulatory regions. Indeed, knockdown of L3MBTL1 promotes the development of hematopoiesis and impairs neural cell fate in human pluripotent stem cells. We also found a role for L3MBTL1 in regulating SMAD5 target gene expression in mature hematopoietic cell populations, thereby affecting erythroid differentiation. Taken together, we have identified epigenetic priming of hematopoietic-specific transcriptional networks, which may assist in the development of therapeutic approaches for patients with anemia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent data link exposure to repetitive head impacts (RHIs) from American football with increased white matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden. WMH might have unique characteristics in the context of RHI beyond vascular risk and normal aging processes. We evaluated biological correlates of WMH in former American football players, including markers of amyloid, tau, inflammation, axonal injury, neurodegeneration, and vascular health. METHODS: Participants underwent clinical interviews, MRI, and lumbar puncture as part of the Diagnostics, Imaging, and Genetics Network for the Objective Study and Evaluation of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Research Project. Structural equation modeling tested direct and indirect effects between log-transformed total fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) lesion volumes (TLV) and the revised Framingham stroke risk profile (rFSRP), MRI-derived global metrics of cortical thickness and fractional anisotropy (FA), and CSF levels of amyloid β1-42, p-tau181, soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (sTREM2), and neurofilament light. Covariates included age, race, education, body mass index, APOE ε4 carrier status, and evaluation site. Models were performed separately for former football players and a control group of asymptomatic men unexposed to RHI. RESULTS: In 180 former football players (mean age = 57.2, 36% Black), higher log(TLV) had direct associations with the following: higher rFSRP score (B = 0.26, 95% CI 0.07-0.40), higher p-tau181 (B = 0.17, 95% CI 0.01-0.43), lower FA (B = -0.28, 95% CI -0.42 to -0.13), and reduced cortical thickness (B = -0.25, 95% CI -0.45 to -0.08). In 60 asymptomatic unexposed men (mean age = 59.3, 40% Black), there were no direct effects on log(TLV) (rFSRP: B = -0.03, 95% CI -0.48 to 0.57; p-tau181: B = -0.30, 95% CI -1.14 to 0.37; FA: B = -0.07, 95% CI -0.48 to 0.42; or cortical thickness: B = -0.28, 95% CI -0.64 to 0.10). The former football players showed stronger associations between log(TLV) and rFSRP (1,069% difference in estimates), p-tau181 (158%), and FA (287%) than the unexposed men. DISCUSSION: Risk factors and biological correlates of WMH differed between former American football players and asymptomatic unexposed men. In addition to vascular health, p-tau181 and diffusion tensor imaging indices of white matter integrity showed stronger associations with WMH in the former football players. FLAIR WMH may have specific risk factors and pathologic underpinnings in RHI-exposed individuals.

BackgroundWithin older Veterans, multiple factors may contribute to cognitive difficulties. Beyond Alzheimer's disease (AD), psychiatric (e.g., PTSD) and health comorbidities (e.g., TBI) may also impact cognition.ObjectiveThis study aimed to derive subgroups based on objective cognition, subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and amyloid burden, and then compare subgroups on clinical characteristics, biomarkers, and longitudinal change in functioning and global cognition.MethodsCluster analysis of neuropsychological measures, SCD, and amyloid PET was conducted on 228 predominately male Vietnam-Era Veterans from the Department of Defense-Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. Cluster-derived subgroups were compared on baseline characteristics as well as 1-year changes in everyday functioning and global cognition.ResultsThe cluster analysis identified 3 groups. Group 1 (n = 128) had average-to-above average cognition with low amyloid burden. Group 2 (n = 72) had the lowest memory and language, highest SCD, and average amyloid burden; they also had the most severe PTSD, pain, and worst sleep quality. Group 3 (n = 28) had the lowest attention/executive functioning, slightly low memory and language, elevated amyloid and the worst AD biomarkers, and the fastest rate of everyday functioning and cognitive decline.ConclusionsPsychiatric and health factors likely contributed to Group 2's low memory and language performance. Group 3 was most consistent with biological AD, yet attention/executive function was the lowest score. The complexity of older Veterans' co-morbid conditions may interact with AD pathology to show attention/executive dysfunction (rather than memory) as a prominent early symptom. These results could have important implications for the implementation of AD-modifying drugs in older Veterans.

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) is the causal agent of bacterial speck disease in tomatoes. The Pto/Prf gene cluster from Solanum pimpinellifolium was introgressed into several modern tomato cultivars and provided protection against Pst race 0 strains for many decades. However, virulent Pst race 1 strains that evade Pto-mediated immunity now predominate in tomato-growing regions worldwide. Here we report the identification of resistance to a Pst race 1 strain (Pst19) in the wild tomato accession S. pimpinellifolium LA1589 (hereafter LA1589), using our rapid high-throughput seedling screen. LA1589 supports less bacterial growth than cultivars, and does not exhibit a hypersensitive response to Pst19. We tested an existing set of 87 Inbred Backcross Lines (IBLs) derived from a cross between susceptible Solanum lycopersicum E-6203 and Solanum pimpinellifolium LA1589 for resistance to Pst19. Using single-marker analysis, we identified three genomic regions associated with resistance. Bacterial growth assays on IBLs confirmed that these regions contribute to resistance in planta. We also mapped candidate genes associated with resistance in a cross between the Solanum lycopersicum var. lycopersicum cultivar Heinz BG-1706 and S. pimpinellifolium LA1589. By comparing candidates from the two mapping approaches, we were able to identify 3 QTL and 5 candidate genes in LA1589 for a role in resistance to Pst19. This work will assist in molecular marker-assisted breeding to protect tomato from bacterial speck disease.

Scientific progress depends on reliable and reproducible results. Progress can also be accelerated when data are shared and re-analyzed to address new questions. Current approaches to storing and analyzing neural data typically involve bespoke formats and software that make replication, as well as the subsequent reuse of data, difficult if not impossible. To address these challenges, we created Spyglass , an open-source software framework that enables reproducible analyses and sharing of data and both intermediate and final results within and across labs. Spyglass uses the Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) standard and includes pipelines for several core analyses in neuroscience, including spectral filtering, spike sorting, pose tracking, and neural decoding. It can be easily extended to apply both existing and newly developed pipelines to datasets from multiple sources. We demonstrate these features in the context of a cross-laboratory replication by applying advanced state space decoding algorithms to publicly available data. Abstract: The anisotropy of energetic particles provides essential information to help resolve the underlying fundamental physics of their spatial distributions, injection, acceleration, and transport processes. In this work, we report an energetic ion enhancement that is characterized by very large and long-lasting anisotropies observed by STEREO A and Solar Orbiter, which are nearly aligned along the same nominal Parker spiral. This ion enhancement appears at the rising phase of a widespread solar energetic particle event that was associated with the farside coronal mass ejection on 2022 February 15. According to our analysis, the long-lasting anisotropy resulted from the continuous injection of energetic ions from a well-connected particle source located beyond the STEREO A’s orbit. Solar Orbiter also observed an interval of very large anisotropy dominated exclusively by sunward streaming ions but with the additional implication that it detected the very early phase of ion injections onto magnetic field lines that newly connected to the particle source, which is likely the first reported event of this kind. These results further illustrate how energetic particle anisotropy information, in particular from multiple observer locations, can be used to disentangle the sources and transport processes of energetic ions, even when their heliospheric context is not simple.

INTRODUCTION: Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is an essential ancillary study used to identify clinically aggressive subsets of large B-cell lymphomas that have MYC, BCL2, or BCL6 rearrangements. Small-volume biopsies such as fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and core needle biopsy (CNB) are increasingly used to diagnose lymphoma and obtain material for ancillary studies such as FISH. However, the performance of FISH in small biopsies has not been thoroughly evaluated or compared to surgical biopsies. METHODS: We describe the results of MYC, BCL2, and BCL6 FISH in a series of 222 biopsy specimens, including FNAB with cell blocks, CNBs, and surgical excisional or incisional biopsies from 208 unique patients aggregated from 6 academic medical centers. A subset of patients had FNAB followed by a surgical biopsy (either CNB or excisional biopsy) obtained from the same or contiguous anatomic site as part of the same clinical workup; FISH results were compared for these paired specimens. RESULTS: FISH had a low hybridization failure rate of around 1% across all specimen types. FISH identified concurrent MYC and BCL2 rearrangements in 20 of 197 (10%) specimens and concurrent MYC and BCL6 rearrangements in 3 of 182 (1.6%) specimens. The paired FNAB and surgical biopsy specimens did not show any discrepancies for MYC or BCL2 FISH; of the 17 patients with 34 paired cytology and surgical specimens, only 2 of the 49 FISH probes compared (4% of all comparisons) showed any discrepancy and both were at the BCL6 locus. One discrepancy was due to necrosis of the CNB specimen causing a false negative BCL6 FISH result when compared to the FNAB cell block that demonstrated a BCL6 rearrangement. DISCUSSION: FISH showed a similar hybridization failure rate in all biopsy types. Ultimately, MYC, BCL2, or BCL6 FISH showed 96% concordance when compared across paired cytology and surgical specimens, suggesting FNAB with cell block is equivalent to other biopsy alternatives for evaluation of DLBCL or HGBCL FISH testing.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence is increasing and correlated with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD; formerly nonalcoholic fatty liver disease), even in patients without advanced liver fibrosis who are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced disease stages and shorter survival time, and less likely to receive a liver transplant. Machine learning (ML) tools can characterize large datasets and help develop predictive models that can calculate individual HCC risk and guide selective screening and risk mitigation strategies. METHODS: Tableau and KNIME Analytics were used for descriptive analytics and ML tasks. ML models were developed using standard laboratory and clinical parameters. Sci-kit learn algorithms were used for model development. Data from University of California (UC), Davis, were used to develop and train a pilot predictive model, which was subsequently validated in an independent dataset from UC San Francisco. MASLD and HCC patients were identified by International Classification of Diseases-9/10 codes. RESULTS: Of the patients diagnosed with MASLD (n = 1561 training; n = 686 validation), HCC developed in 14% (n = 227) of the UC Davis training cohort and 25% (n = 176) of the UC San Francisco validation cohort. Liver fibrosis determined by the noninvasive Fibrosis-4 score was the strongest single predictor for HCC in the model. Using the validation cohort, the model predicted HCC development at 92.06% accuracy with an area under the curve of 0.97, F1-score of 0.84, 98.34% specificity, and 74.41% sensitivity. CONCLUSION: ML models can aid physicians in providing early HCC risk assessment in patients with MASLD. Further validation will translate to cost-effective, personalized care of at-risk patients.
