153. Costunolide alleviates atherosclerosis in high-fat diet-fed ApoE−/−mice through covalently binding to IKKβ and inhibiting NF-κB-mediated inflammation

Abstract

Costunolide (CTD) is a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from costus root and exhibits various biological activities including anti-inflammation. Since atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, we herein investigated the anti-atherosclerotic effects of CTD and the underlying mechanism. Atherosclerosis was induced in ApoE−/−mice by feeding them with a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks, followed by administration of CTD (10, 20 mg ·kg−1·d−1, i.g.) for 8 weeks. We showed that CTD administration dose-dependently alleviated atherosclerosis in HFD-fed ApoE−/−mice. Furthermore, we found that CTD dose-dependently reduced inflammatory responses in aortas of the mice, as CTD prevented infiltration of inflammatory cells in aortas and attenuated oxLDL uptake in macrophages, leading to reduced expression of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic molecules in aortas. Similar results were observed in oxLDL-stimulated mouse primary peritoneal macrophages (MPMs) in vitro. We showed that pretreatment with CTD (2.5, 5. 10 μM) restrained oxLDL-induced inflammatory responses in MPMs by blocking pro-inflammatory NF-κB/p65 signaling pathway. We further demonstrated that CTD inactivated NF-κB via covalent binding to cysteine 179 on IKKβ, a canonical upstream regulator of NF-κB, reducing its phosphorylation and leading to conformational change in the active loop of IKKβ. Our results discover IKKβ as the target of CTD for its anti-inflammatory activity and elucidate a molecular mechanism underlying the anti-atherosclerosis effect of CTD. CTD is a potentially therapeutic candidate for retarding inflammatory atherosclerotic diseases.

Abstract

In the present work, a core-shell structured Co/SiO2@HZSM-5 catalyst was prepared for hydrogen production from syngas of plastic waste gasification. The cobalt catalyst was coated with HZSM-5 shell through a hydrothermal process, and the Co/SiO2@HZSM-5, with different loadings of HZSM-5 (e.g., 10–30 wt %) exhibited excellent activity and durability for dehydrogenation reactions. The amount of HZSM-5 was found to be an important factor for hydrogen production. Temperature-programmed reduction with H2 and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia was applied to determine the active site and the acidity of prepared catalyst, respectively. The prepared Co/SiO2@HZSM-5 was tested through reforming of plastic gasification syngas and shown superior hydrogen production ability (∼90%) and stability (over 15 h). The effects of reduction-oxidation behavior on the catalytic performance were also discussed.

160. A distributed circuit model for power-line communications

Abstract

This paper presents a computational efficient distributed circuit model for broadband power-fine communications (PLC) in the frequency range of 1 to 30 MHz. The model is derived based on the full wave approach and it takes into account the mutual coupling between the power lines, the effect of the ground plane and the discontinuity along the fines (e.g., PLC line bent with an arbitrary angle and the terminations). To derive the distributed circuit model, the PLC lines were divided into many small elements with each element treated as a dipole antenna. The electromagnetic fields along the power fines were considered as the summation of the field of these elements solved by the boundary conditions at the air-conductor and the air-ground interfaces from which the explicit expressions of the per-unit-length circuit parameters were obtained. To check the accuracy of our proposed model, the current distributions along PLC fines excited by an external source were determined using the chain matrix approach. Common-mode current is calculated with the transmission line equations. The agreement between our theoretical calculations with the experimental data as well as with full wave approach shows the validity and applicability of our proposed model for such PLC applications. Abstract

In this paper, a radiated-emission model of broad-band power-line communications PLCs) in the frequency range from 1 to 30 MHz is presented. The model is based on the full-wave approach with the formulations of the extracted Maxwell equations. The transmission characteristic of the power line is obtained with the boundary conditions. The effects of the ground on the transmission characteristic and radiation are emphasized. Experiments were made to check the validity and accuracy of our model. It shows that the model is useful in predicting the effect of the ground on the radiation of straight PLCs. Index Terms--Effect of the ground, emitted radiation, powerline communication (PLC).

Abstract

Ni/SiO2 core–shell catalysts were prepared by deposition–precipitation method and used to produce hydrogen from waste plastics-derived syngas. The SiO2 core synthesized by the Stober process was used as the support. This core was synthesized using various solvents, and the effect of these solvents on the morphologies and catalytic performance of the Ni/SiO2 core–shell catalysts was investigated. The synthesis parameters of the Ni/SiO2 catalysts were further investigated to enhance the metal–support interaction and dispersion of Ni on the SiO2 support. The highest catalytic activity of 181 mmol/g-h was achieved when the Ni/SiO2 core–shell catalyst was synthesized in methanol (Ni/SiO2–M) and reacted at 800 °C at a water-addition rate of 0.75 g-H2O/h. The Ni/SiO2–M catalyst, which possessed strong metal–support interaction nickel phyllosilicates, high specific area, small particle size, and homogeneous metal dispersion, exhibited the best long-term stability.

Abstract

The thermochemical treatment of waste plastics to produce H2-rich syngas is a promising technique for both waste management and the regeneration of valuable energy resources. In this paper, we report the synthesis of Ni@CeO2 core–shell catalyst with different shell thicknesses. The H2 production ability of the Ni@CeO2 core–shell catalysts was tested and compared to that of the supported Ni/CeO2 catalyst, and it was determined that the H2 yield of the Ni@CeO2 core–shell catalysts was significantly higher than that of the supported Ni/CeO2 catalyst. Owing to the hollow space between the core and shell providing a reacting space for heterogeneous catalysis, the amount of H2 obtained employing the Ni@CeO2-0.5 catalyst, which was obtained using 0.5 mmol cerium nitrate, was the highest of all analyzed Ni@CeO2 catalysts in this study. The optimal H2 production rate of 730.6 mmol/(h g was obtained at 700 °C when the equivalence ratio (ER) was 0.1.

189. miR‐32‐5p Regulates Lipid Accumulation in Intramuscular Fat of Erhualian Pigs by Suppressing KLF3.

Abstract

Intramuscular fat (IMF) and subcutaneous fat (SCF) are important traits affecting the economics of the pork industry, in which less SCF and more IMF content is desirable. However, the mechanisms that regulate IMF and SCF content are not clear yet. In this study, we demonstrate that KLF3 (Krüppel‐like factor 3) was negatively correlated with IMF content in the longissimus dorsi muscle of Erhualian pigs. In addition, the expression level of KLF3 was significantly higher in IMF than SCF. Overexpression and knockdown experiments revealed that KLF3 could suppress adipocyte differentiation in vitro by downregulating adipogenic markers, including PPARG, C/EBPA, and FABP4. Luciferase activity analysis proved that miR‐32‐5p was able to suppress KLF3. Notably, miR‐32‐5p level was negatively correlated to KLF3 mRNA level in both IMF and SCF tissues. The same relationship was proved in samples with different IMF content. Further studies showed that miR‐32‐5p could promote adipocyte differentiation via inhibiting KLF3. Our results suggest that the miR‐32‐5p‐KLF3 pathway is involved in the regulation of differential fat deposition of IMF and SCF tissues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A novel and simple synthetic approach toward core–shell Fe@Al2O3 nanocomposites were developed in this study. The as-synthesized catalyst was applied to convert the methane into carbon nanotubes. Moreover, due to the properties of the core–shell structure, the amount of surfactant can be adjusted to control the pore size of the shell and further control the diameter of the carbon nanotubes. In this study, the conversion of CH4 was up to 97% and the carbon production was 135 mgC/gcat.*h, which is much higher than traditional supported catalysts under similar reaction conditions. In addition, the carbon product quality (IG/ID) was up to 1.96. The enhanced CH4 catalytic activity for the core–shell Fe@Al2O3 catalyst originated from the combined acidic sites on the surface of the Al2O3 shell and the high carbon diffusion rate of the Fe core, which led to the high efficiency of CH4 conversion and longer lifetime of the catalyst.
