Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of enhancement filters in detecting small simulated internal root resorptions (IRR). Methods: : Forty-two extracted human teeth were sectioned, connected, and stored in a dry human jaw and X-rayed with photostimulable phosphor plates (PSPs), composing the control group (CG). In the middle-third of the root canals, IRR lesions were simulated using Da Silveira protocol. Later, the specimens were X-rayed to create the test group (TG). All images acquired were exported with seven enhancement filters plus the original image. Three examiners used a five-point Likert scale to evaluate the images regarding the presence/absence of IRR. Diagnostic efficacy was assessed from sensitivity and specificity results. Comparison among filters was performed by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: : Moderate values of Kappa interexaminer (0.403–0.620) and high values of Kappa intraexaminer (0.757–0.915) were observed. The best performance occurred in the CG (p < 0.05). Original images presented the greatest sensitivity and area under the ROC curve (0.595–0.750), while the Endo filter presented the greatest specificity (0.952). Inversion and Pseudo-3D images produced the greatest doubt in the diagnosis, significant for CG with the Pseudo-3D filter (p < 0.05). Conclusions: : The Original and ‘Endo’ filters should be chosen as it offers greater diagnostic ability and allows more confidence during the evaluation.

Dadas as mudanças estruturais e comportamentais evidenciadas em diversos setores decorrentes da pandemia do novo coronavírus, este estudo busca identificar os impactos da pandemia de Covid-19 na gestão dos resíduos sólidos, bem como alternativas relacionadas. Para isso foi realizada uma revisão sistemática nas bases de dados ScienceDirect, Scopus e Portal de Periódicos Capes com a utilização da metodologia Methodi Ordinatio. Ao total, 27 estudos compuseram o portfólio final e foram avaliados. Os resultados denotam os impactos da pandemia na gestão de resíduos associados à geração de EPIs, a resíduos de serviços de saúde e resíduos plásticos, à alteração nos padrões de consumo e geração de resíduos domiciliares e alimentares, à coleta seletiva, bem como a diferenças evidenciadas em países desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento. Por fim, as recomendações associadas aos pontos em destaque são apresentadas.

The paper seeks to investigate the environmental, social and economic impacts of the Soil and Water Management Program in Micro-basins in Paraná for farm producers participating in the program in the town of Irati/PR and region. The agency affirms that the initiative aims to generate a better quality of life for the residents near the micro-basins, as well as to help in the agricultural productive capacity of the region. The paper’s results showed that 85% of the producers believe that the program not only fulfilled what it proposed but also entailed several positive points and significant changes in the relationship between rural producers and the work in the field. Thus, the program assumes an essential role in its condition of public policy, generating income, social welfare, and environmental protection in the Irati/PR region. &nbsp

To evaluate the biomechanical properties of the upper thoracic spine in anterior-posterior shear loading at various displacement rates. These data broaden our understanding of thoracic spine biomechanics and inform efforts to model the spine and spinal cord injuries. Seven T1-T2 thoracic functional spinal units were loaded non-destructively by a pure shear force up to 200 N, starting from a neutral posture. Tests were run in both posterior and anterior directions, at displacement rates of 1, 10, and 100 mm/s. The three-dimensional motion of the specimen was recorded at 1000 Hz. Individual and averaged load-displacement curves were generated and specimen stiffnesses were calculated. Due to a nonlinear response of the specimens, stiffness was defined separately for both the lower half and the upper half of the specimen range of motion. Specimens were significantly stiffer in the anterior direction than in the posterior direction, across all rates. At low displacements, the anterior stiffness averaged 230 N/mm, 76% higher than the low displacement posterior stiffness of 131 N/mm. At high displacements, anterior stiffness averaged 258 N/mm, 51% stiffer than the high displacement posterior stiffness of 171 N/mm. Shear displacement rate had a small effect on the load response, with the 100 mm/s rate causing a mildly stiffer response at low displacements in the anterior direction. Overall, the load-displacement response exhibited pseudo-quadratic behavior at 1 and 10 mm/s but became more linear at 100 mm/s. The shear stiffness in the upper thoracic spine is greatest in the anterior loading direction, being 51%-76% greater than posterior, most likely due to facet interactions. The effect of the shear displacement rate is low.

Intelligent fault diagnosis systems of equipment are essential in industries, to prevent failures, reduce downtime and increase plant availability. In this context, this work proposes a methodology to develop diagnostic systems for detecting anomalies and identifying failures in the piping system due to malfunctioning pumps, such as cavitation. Relevant information is extracted based on motor electric current, available in PROFINET networks by smart relays, widely used in this type of application. A prototype of a hydraulic piping system was created for data collection and methodology validation. Machine learning tools for extracting and selecting features (such as standard deviation, entropy, harmonics, among others), and an SVM-based model for pattern recognition, are used to diagnose the status of the centrifugal pump. The results achieved were 88.7 % of accuracy for cavitation fault detection and 100.0% for dry running operation. Thus, the methodology is feasible and efficient, indicating an opportunity to improve the use of data available by smart relays in industrial network communication.

The aim of this study was to identify whether cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging affects endodontists' diagnostic thinking, treatment option, and confidence in dental trauma cases.Twelve endodontists reviewed 15 dental trauma cases with clinical histories and periapical radiography (PR) and answered questions regarding their diagnostic thinking and treatment decisions and their confidence in both. One month later, the same participants reviewed the same cases and answered similar questionnaires with the aid of CBCT imaging. A statistical analysis of their responses was conducted.Differences were observed in diagnostic thinking when using PR or CBCT imaging (P.05), and the use of PR was associated with a higher number of "unsure" answers to questions about diagnoses. After reviewing periapical radiographic images, the approach most frequently endorsed was "don't start conventional endodontic treatment and order CBCT," whereas the most common decision made after analyzing the CBCT images was "start conventional endodontic treatment." Clinical interventions were proposed more often when participants evaluated the clinical case using CBCT imaging than when using PR (P.05). The participants' degree of confidence in their diagnostic thinking was not different after analysis using PR or CBCT imaging (P.05). However, there was a difference between PR and CBCT imaging in participants' confidence in their treatment decisions (P.05). Participants who initially indicated a lack of confidence in their diagnosis or treatment option gained confidence when CBCT images were available. However, the inverse behavior was also observed for participants who were initially confident on the basis of PR (P.05). Participants who decided to start treatment after CBCT analysis were less confident than when using PR (P.05).In dental trauma cases, CBCT imaging influenced participants' diagnostic thinking and choice of treatment modality and affected their confidence in the decision-making process.

Considerando las particularidades y la importancia del papel del tutor en la Educación a Distancia, este estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar las competencias intrínsecas a las funciones de tutoría en esta modalidad de enseñanza. Para ello, se realizó una revisión sistemática utilizando la metodología Methodi Ordinatio, en las bases de datos del Portal de Revistas Capes; Scientific Electronic Library Online, ScienceDirect y Scopus, que cubre estudios centrados en el tema en los últimos 10 años. En total, 12 estudios cumplieron los criterios establecidos y fueron evaluados. Los resultados muestran competencias técnicas, gerenciales y sociales asociadas con el papel del tutor. Entre ellos, se destacan las competencias de proporcionar atención individualizada a los estudiantes, de utilizar los sistemas y conocimientos asociados con la tecnología de la información, de proporcionar un entorno en línea acogedor, amigable, confiable y estimulante, de demostrar empatía, de estimular la interacción, de motivar a los estudiantes y proporcionar realimentación. Las dificultades aún son evidentes en relación con las habilidades técnicas y sociales, lo que lleva a la necesidad de una dirección dirigida a su desarrollo y mejora, para que puedan ayudar en el desempeño práctico eficaz y eficiente del tutor. Considering the particularities and the importance of the tutor's role in the Distance Education (EAD) modality, this study this study aimed to identify the competencies intrinsic to the tutoring functions in EAD. For this, a systematic review was carried out using the Methodi Ordinatio methodology, in the databases of Portal de Periódicos Capes; Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), ScienceDirect and Scopus, covering studies focused on the theme in the last 10 years. In total, 12 studies met the established criteria and were evaluated. The results show technical, managerial and social competencies associated with the role of the tutor. Among them, we highlight the competencies of: providing individualized attention to students, using the systems and knowledge associated with information technology, providing a welcoming, friendly, trusting and stimulating online environment, demonstrating empathy, stimulating interaction, motivating students and providing feedback, which are largely directed to the social perspective. Difficulties are still evident in relation to technical and social competencies, which leads to the need for a direction aimed at their development and improvement, so that they can assist in the effective and efficient practical performance of the tutor.

Introduction Orthodontic traction of a maxillary impacted canine (MIC) increases the orthodontic treatment time. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of MIC characteristics and factors associated with orthodontic treatment on the duration of active orthodontic traction. Methods This follow-up and retrospective study included 45 MICs orthodontically tractioned into the occlusal plane with the use of a standardized protocol. MIC characteristics, including type, sector, side, location, height, and complexity of impaction, as well as α and β angles and canine root length and area were measured. Likewise, factors associated with orthodontic treatment, including sex, age, malocclusion, premolar extractions, previous incisor root resorption, ANB, APDI, and SNA angles, and PNS-ANS distance were also evaluated. The statistical analysis included multiple linear regressions to estimate the influence of all variables on the duration of traction (α = 0.05). Results Sex had significant influence (P = 0.027) on the time of traction; in female patients, the time was 2.05 months more than in male patients. Bilateral impaction treatment increased the time by 2.74 months compared with unilateral cases (P = 0.001). Traction of bicortically centered impacted canines increased the duration of traction by 2.85 months (P = 0.001). Finally, the traction time increased in 2.35 months (P = 0.046) when the impaction sectors were 4 or 5 (close to the midline). Conclusions The duration of active orthodontic traction of MIC is mainly influenced by sex, bilateral type, bicortically centered location, or when MIC is located in sector 4 or 5 close to midline, increasing the traction time by some months.

Introduction The orthodontic traction of impacted canines is a procedure of variable complexity. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of this complexity on the root resorption (RR) of adjacent incisors, using cone-beam computed tomography. Methods This longitudinal retrospective study included 45 patients (19 female, 11 male; ages, 18.16 ± 7.3 years) with maxillary impacted canines, classified into 2 groups according to the level of orthodontic traction complexity: low complexity group (n = 20) and high complexity group (n = 25). The amounts of RR of 45 maxillary central and 45 lateral incisors were evaluated before and after treatment. Complexity was defined considering impaction sector, eruption inclination angle, and canine position (palatal, buccal, or bicortical). Three orthodontists measured RR in each maxillary incisor. Independent t tests or Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare resorption between groups depending on the normality of the data. A multiple linear regression was calculated to evaluate the influence of all variables on RR (α = 0.05). Results RR of maxillary incisors in the sagittal, coronal, and axial sections showed no significant differences between groups (P > 0.05). Independently of the groups, RR ranged approximately from 1 to 1.5 mm and from 3 to 4 mm2. RR was less than 2 mm2 in the axial sections. Multiple linear regression indicated no significant influence of orthodontic treatment complexity on RR. Male patients had more RR, specifically in the maxillary central incisors than female patients (P Conclusions The complexity of orthodontic traction of impacted maxillary canines is not a risk factor for greater RR of maxillary incisors close to the impaction area.

Diante do atual ambiente mercadologico, marcado pela dificuldade de sobrevivencia e manutencao de empreendimentos, a empresa X, localizada na cidade de Irati-PR, pode ser considerada um caso de sucesso. Ela atua a mais de um seculo no mercado gastronomico e realizou, ao longo do tempo, expansoes fisicas e no mix de produtos e servicos oferecidos, possibilitadas pela capacidade de desenvolvimento de competencias e estrategias direcionadas a cada contexto. Os recursos, vistos como ativos tangiveis e intangiveis, e as competencias geradas pelas organizacoes podem ser considerados fonte de diferenciacao e, desta forma, sao capazes de justificar o sucesso alcancado em determinado cenario. Em decorrencia disso, este estudo, baseando-se nas consideracoes teoricas da Visao Baseada em Recursos (VBR), buscou identificar os recursos e as competencias desenvolvidas pela empresa X que geram vantagens competitivas e possibilitam a sua continuidade e desenvolvimento em um cenario de poucos incentivos e possibilidades. Para tanto, foi efetuada uma pesquisa qualitativa, classificada como descritiva e exploratoria. A operacionalizacao se deu por meio de um estudo de caso, onde foram realizadas observacoes nao participantes com o intuito de compreender as questoes relacionadas ao ambiente interno, a pratica de trabalho e a relacao dos empreendedores com as atividades e com os colaboradores da organizacao, e entrevistas semiestruturadas cujas questoes foram aplicadas aos proprietarios da empresa, responsaveis pelas decisoes estrategicas, tambem com o objetivo de entender a dinâmica do ambiente interno organizacional. As entrevistas foram gravadas e transcritas e das observacoes procederam-se anotacoes sob forma de diario de campo. Os dados obtidos foram interpretados conforme a metodologia da analise de conteudo e os recursos e competencias identificados foram divididos em financeiros, fisicos, organizacionais e individuais e posteriormente foram submetidos a classificacao segundo o metodo VRIO proposto por Barney e Hesterly (2007). Os resultados da pesquisa apresentaram como recursos e competencias que proporcionam vantagens competitivas sustentaveis, a localizacao, a cultura, a tradicao, a baixa rotatividade de parte dos funcionarios e a dedicacao dos colaboradores, o que possibilitou a conclusao de que alguns fatores estao intrinsecamente relacionados aos recursos humanos organizacionais, que, devido a uma politica informal estabelecida e nem sempre percebida pelos socios proprietarios, desenvolvem dedicacao e motivacao para a continuidade no oficio desenvolvido. Ademais, a localizacao, que facilita um grande fluxo de consumidores; a cultura familiar aberta a mudancas e de proximidade entre os membros; e a tradicao constituida no decorrer de 100 anos de atuacao, sao fatores de dificil imitacao o que os torna potenciais fontes de destaque organizacional.

O objetivo deste estudo foi levantar a produção científica brasileira sobre sustentabilidade e inovação em indústrias do segmento de cerâmica vermelha, no período de 2000 a 2020. Os métodos utilizados foram descritivo, bibliográfico e qualitativo. As buscas foram efetuadas na base de dados do Portal de Periódicos da CAPES. Os resultados apontam que existe uma tendência de pesquisa em Aglomerações Produtivas Locais (APL’s) e uma ênfase em preocupações ambientais. A inovação para a sustentabilidade retratou-se como característica fundamental nas organizações produtivas modernas. No segmento da cerâmica vermelha, o fator sustentabilidade deve estar incorporado com a inovação. A indústria da cerâmica vermelha precisa trabalhar esses dois fatores, conjuntamente, para ter condições de posicionar-se neste segmento da construção civil. Verificou-se que a inovação voltada para a sustentabilidade é necessária para que as organizações se posicionem em condições competitivas no mercado, em busca de crescimento, considerando as vantagens que esses fatores têm proporcionado.

Introdução: O Serviço de Radiologia da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (FO-UFRGS) atende as necessidades de pacientes oriundos do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), realizando radiografias odontológicas, as quais são relevantes para o diagnóstico e planejamento clínico. A listagem do agendamento desses exames constitui um banco de dados com potencial de gerar importantes indicadores para o aprimoramento do serviço à população. Objetivo: Avaliar o perfil dos pacientes, número e origem dos encaminhamentos, e o absenteísmo frente aos agendamentos de exames radiográficos do Serviço de Radiologia da FOUFRGS. Materiais e métodos: Os dados foram coletados via Sistema de Regulação (SISREG) da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Porto Alegre (SMS-POA) e foram analisadas as seguintes informações: sexo, idade, tipo de exame realizado, origem das solicitações e absenteísmo no período entre 2014-2016. Resultados: Foram agendados 9890 exames radiográficos, sendo 74,6% extrabucais e 25,4% intrabucais. Em relação ao perfil dos pacientes, o sexo feminino representou 61,8% das marcações, e a faixa etária de 19 a 59 anos de idade foi predominante (69,1%). De modo geral, observou-se alto percentual de absenteísmo (42,1%), com maiores índices, estatisticamente significantes, relacionados ao sexo feminino (43,1%), à faixa etária de 12 a 18 anos (45,9%) e à Gerência Distrital Restinga/Extremo Sul (46,6%) (p

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) caused by the deficiency of enzymes essential for the metabolism of extracellular matrix components called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). To understand the physiopathology and alterations due to the lysosomal accumulation resulting from enzymatic deficiencies and their secondary outcomes can improve the diagnosis and treatment of rare genetic diseases. This work presents a database for differentially expressed genes from different public MPS data. We developed our database, including 13 studies previously deposited in the GEO (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/). The website is hosted in the UFRGS data processing center (CPD) and is available athttps://www.ufrgs.br/mpsbase/. The site was constructed in PHP, and the analyses were performed in R. The organisms represented by the datasets are Canis lupus familiaris, Homo sapiens, Mus musculus, and Rattus norvegicus. The user can search for the differentially expressed genes and ontologies by species, MPS type, or tissue type. For each comparison, a heatmap with the 50 top differentially expressed genes is available as well as dot plots for the 30 top ontologies divided by biological process, cellular component, KEGG pathways, and molecular function. This data is also fully available in tables. There are 54 possible comparisons involving about 5000 to 10,000 genes each. This website is the only specific database for MPS with filtering and presenting their results in a one-click approach to the best of our knowledge. The development of such analytical and automated strategies accessible to health professionals is essential for fostering MPS research. The MPSBase is a web user-friendly, comprehensive repository of differentially expressed genes and ontologies regarding the MPS data.

Objectives: To develop and test a protective device (PD) to increase the resistance of photostimulable storage phosphor (PSP) plate to compressive load, and assess the resulting image quality. Methods: Two prototypes, polyvinylchloride sheets of 0.3 mm and 0.7 mm each, were developed for PSP plate size 2. The resistance to compressive load was tested using eight new PSPs divided into four test groups: (1) PSP, (2) PSP and paperboard protector, (3) PSP and 0.3 mm PD, and (4) PSP and 0.7 mm PD. The resulting images were analyzed by three oral radiologists, based on the consensus for image artifacts. Additionally, the objective image quality test was performed with four new PSPs, using an 8-step wedge aluminum scale. The mean gray values and standard deviation were measured in a total of 240 images, and the data were analyzed using analysis of variance with Bonferroni post-hoc test. Results: Artifacts were seen in the PSP control group starting at 40 n, and at 150 n, 175 n and 300 n in 0.3 mm PD, paperboard protector and 0.7 mm PD, respectively. Although there was no statistical difference among groups, there were differences between exposure times (0.06–0.25 s, 0.06–0.40 s, and 0.10–0.40 s). Scanning resolution of 20 lp/mm showed higher mean gray value than 25 and 40 lp/mm (p < 0.05) Conclusion: The developed PDs improved the PSP resistance to compressive forces, with low interference on the pixel gray values, regardless of exposure time and spatial resolution. Nevertheless, the 0.7 mm PD could withstand the maximum compressive load.

Industrial communication networks are a fundamental aspect of the connectivity demanded by Industry 4.0. In this scenario, protocols based on Real-Time Ethernet, which have been proven fundamental for automation tasks in the past, may be suitable also for new projects. Since Industry 4.0 requires additional features never exploited before in control networks that could jeopardize real-time, a trustful evaluation of key performance indicators is mandatory. As known by previous works, collecting and analyzing Real-Time Ethernet data is challenging, and not all the RTE protocols have been already studied. In this paper, the SERCOS III protocol is considered, because it is widely used in the industrial environment but it is not well investigated by the scientific community. Therefore, this work aims to carry out a (quantitative) comparative bibliographic research pointing out gaps, discussing SERCOS III protocol’s communication dynamics, and presenting a performance analysis method based on indicators for real applications. Finally, the Throughput RT and Non-RT, cycle time, and jitter are analyzed in a case study, where the proposed analysis structure is applied to a SERCOS III network.

O objetivo foi analisar a série temporal de procedimentos de imagem em Odontologia realizados entre os anos de 2000 e 2016 no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Os dados foram obtidos do Sistema de Informações Ambulatoriais (SIASUS). Foram analisadas a influência da Política Nacional de Saúde Bucal de 2004, da Portaria nº 600/2006 (institui o financiamento dos Centros de Especialidades Odontológicas - CEOs) e Portaria nº 1.234/2013 (Incentivo financeiro do Programa de Melhoria do Acesso e da Qualidade - PMAQCEO). Apresentou-se análises descritivas dos anos inicial e final da série temporal, avaliando tendências e sazonalidade em sete tipos de procedimentos. A série temporal das taxas de exames radiográficos periapicais/interproximais demonstrou tendência de aumento moderado e foi a única em que se observou o impacto da política de implementação financeira dos CEOs, mas não do PMAQ- CEO. Os exames extraorais como: radiografia panorâmica, Tomografia Computadorizada (TC) da face/Articulação Temporomandibular (ATM) e Ressonância Magnética (RM) da ATM possuem forte tendência de aumento apesar das taxas serem muito baixas. Conclui-se que entre os anos 2000 e 2016, a política de expansão da atenção secundária, aumentou o uso de exames de imagem periapical/interproximal. The scope of this paper was to analyze the time series of dental procedures performed between 2000 and 2016 in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The data were obtained from the Outpatient Information System of the SUS (SIA-SUS). The influence of the 2004 National Oral Health Policy of Ordinance No. 600/2006 (which instituted the financing of Dental Specialty Centers - CEOs), and Ordinance No. 1,234/2013 (Financial incentive for the Program for Enhancement of Quality and Access - PMAQ-CEO) were analyzed. Descriptive analyses of the initial and final years of the time series were presented, assessing trends and seasonality in seven types of imaging procedures. The time series of rates of periapical/bitewing radiographic exams revealed a trend of moderate increase and was the only area in which the impact of the financial implementation policy of the CEOs was observed, though not of the PMAQ- CEO. Extraoral imaging exams, such as panoramic radiography, facial CT/TMJ and TMJ MRI revealed a strong upward trend, despite the very low rates. The conclusion reached is that between 2000 and 2016, the policy of expansion of secondary care increased the use of periapical/ bitewing imaging exams. Industrial communication networks are fundamental to the development of Industry 4.0. In particular, those based on real-time Ethernet can meet the demands of time, data transmission, availability, and resources required by modern automation. However, these networks have vulnerabilities. Thus, this article aims to propose a method for detecting attacks on PROFINET networks, by extracting and selecting features for the further classification of attacks. For this, complementing the gap of related works, this methodology does not need anomalous data for the training of the intelligent classifier, proposes the extraction of original feature, and employs cloud computing to guarantee the integration between the attack detection systems and the information management. The results show approximately 100% accuracy in the proposed test scenarios.

One of the most used technologies in industrial automation is industrial Ethernet. RTE protocols can cope with the requirements of the Industry 4.0 frameworks. However, the broader use of industrial Ethernet also generates discussion about its vulnerabilities. In this sense, this work proposes anomaly detection methods. These methods are usually time-consuming and limited in scope since they are derived for addressing a single protocol. Thus, this work proposes a general and accurate anomaly detection technique suitable for any protocol based on RTE. ANN-based and SVM-based classifiers are used for classifying data traffic events based on the most relevant features extracted from data sets. An optimal sliding window approach is used for extracting these data sets, which improves the accuracy of the proposal. Seven different classifiers are investigated. Firstly, a Perceptron Neural Network is applied for verifying if the data sets are linearly separable. If this first classifier is unable to reach the required accuracy, three ANN-based classifiers with different activation functions and three SVM-based classifiers with different kernels are employed. The use of several classifiers not only improves the accuracy but also eliminates the need for advanced knowledge about communication dynamics. The generality and accuracy of the proposal are evaluated for detecting traffic events using real traffic data of a real automotive plant. PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, and SERCOS III networks have been analyzed, showing that some traffic events can be classified using the Perceptron while others require the use of more complex classifiers achieving accuracy greater than 98%.

Electric motors are widely used in the industry. Several studies have proposed methods to detect anomalies in their operation, but always using sensors dedicated to this purpose. In this sense, this work aims to fill gaps in related works presenting a method for the detection of faults in rotating machines driven by electric motors in motion control applications using PROFINET network and PROFIdrive profile. The proposed method does not require any additional or dedicated sensors to provide data to the diagnostic system. Instead, the proposed methodology is based on the analysis of data transmitted in the communication network, which already exists for control purposes. Support vector machine (SVM) is used as a classifier of five different mechanical faults. The results provide that the methodology is feasible and efficient under different machine operating conditions, achieving, in the worst case, 97.78% efficiency.

Manufacturing companies need to be effective in meeting customers’ delivery requirements. Due to customers’ expectations of shrinking delivery times, manufacturing lead times need to be short. This can be achieved through efficient Production Activity Control (PAC) methods. Currently PAC methods rely mostly on centralized decision-making and, seeming not to be adequate to deal with the increasing complexity and dynamics of manufacturing. Autonomous Production Control (APC) methods are a promising alternative to current methods, due to their rapid and flexible reaction to disturbances of the production systems’ operation. APC methods transfer the power of decision-making from a central unit to distributed logistic objects, such as machines, jobs and material handling devices. In this study, three APC methods, namely Pheromones (PHE), QLE (Queue Length Estimator) and a refined version of QLE (RQLE), are compared and analysed via simulation. The study was accomplished for two shop configurations, namely a flexible flow shop and a general flexible flow shop. Simulation results show a superior performance of RQLE in both configurations. Results also show that a new dispatching rule here proposed, the SPT-RTT rule, performs better than others with which it was compared.
