Abstract

The Miocene Yadana carbonate platform is a major offshore gas reservoir located in the Andaman Sea (offshore Myanmar). The integration of petrographic analysis of carbonate rocks, stable isotope measurements and seismic interpretation provided new insights into the diagenetic history of the Upper Burman Limestone reservoir. The high (28%) average porosity of the reservoir is dominantly related to strong development of microporosity, moldic and vuggy porosity. Mud-supported, coral-rich sediments record significant early marine dissolution of aragonite and early lithification of matrix that has led to the development of dense layers. Stable isotope and petrographic data from the top of the reservoir suggest that the long-term depositional hiatus (middle to late Miocene) was related to platform drowning and non-deposition in a deep marine setting. Moderate dolomitization has affected the top and flanks of the platform during the depositional hiatus. Microporosity development and sparry calcite cementation mainly occurred in marine to marine shallow burial environments. A major decrease in porosity, averaging 10%, below the gas-water contact suggests a major phase of porosity evolution during and/or after the hydrocarbon emplacement which is mainly related to 1) increased moldic and vuggy porosity development within the gas zone, 2) microporosity preservation in loosely-packed, subrounded micrites within the gas zone, and 3) microporosity reduction by calcite precipitation within the water zone leading to the development of densely-packed, euhedral micrites.

Abstract

Low-lying atoll islands are known to be made up of unconsolidated, coral-rich detritus, together with high amounts of foraminifera, derived from both outer-reef and lagoonal environments. While regarded as highly vulnerable to ongoing global changes, these islands are poorly constrained in term of development history. Herein is presented a detailed chronostratigraphic study of Tuamotu atoll islands (French Polynesia, south central Pacific) based on analyses of sedimentary sequences through seven excavations along two transects across both windward and leeward rim areas around Takapoto Atoll. The island accretionary chronology is supported by radiometric dating of 62 coral and molluscan clasts. The sequences range between 3.80 m and 1.20 m in thickness, from the oceanic shoreline lagoonwards. Four lithofacies were identified from sediment composition and texture: a coral (pocilloporid)-rich, gravel-supported, preferentially located in the outermost rim areas; a coral-rich, gravelly sand-supported, locally interbedded with gravel-supported units; a foraminifera (amphisteginid)-rich, sand-dominated, mainly located at the central and innermost rim settings; and an organic-rich, sand facies atop of some sequences. A model of atoll islet formation is drawn up in relation to mid to late Holocene sea-level changes. The foundations of islets (motus), namely conglomerate platforms, started to form with deposition of patchy, rubble spreads over the upper reef-rim surfaces from ca 4,500 yr BP as sea level was about 0.80 m above its present mean level. On these platforms, islets started to accrete not before ca 2,300 yr BP, from isolated depocentres located midway between outer-reef and lagoon margins. At that time, sea level at about +0.60 m above present mean sea level was starting to slowly decrease to its present position. The major growth phases occurred in a context of continued sea-level fall. Islets continued to accrete through concentric ridges mainly until the last 300 years. Accretion was dominantly driven by low-frequency, high-energy wave-surge events. From dating of coral clasts, a number of one to two events by century were identified as having apparently contributed to island formation at Takapoto. Regionally predicted increase in the rates of sea-level rise may have negative impacts on such islands since these have evolved under conditions of falling sea level.

Abstract

A dataset of 41 bathymetric profiles detected by satelline imagery and echo-sounding to a maximum depth of 38 m along the fore-reef slopes of Takapoto Atoll (Tuamotu Plateau, French Polynesia, central Pacific) were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed in order to identify the main geomorphological features. In addition, scuba-diving investigations from a selected site resulted in defining coral composition and cover rate. Six distinct fore-reef sectors were morphologically differentiated on the basis of seaward extension and slope gradient. Only the north end, and a restricted area of the mid-south-east side extend seawards over an average distance of 150 m, with a relatively low gradient (23°–38°). Abstract

Two boreholes were drilled through coralgal sequences in the barrier-reef edge of the mid-Pacific island of Tahiti, and their bases were radiometrically dated at 10.23 ([+ or -]0.05) and 13.77 ([+ or -]0.05) ka (thousand calendar years). The sequences are composed mainly of the reef-edge Acropora gr. danai-robusta and Hydrolithon onkodes assemblage, occasionally replaced by reef-slope tabular Acropora-Neogoniolithon or domal Porites-Lithophyllum assemblages. The response of reef growth to sea-level rise has varied according to the framework type, and vertical accretion rates have ranged from 9.3 to 20.6 mm [multiplied by] [yr.sup.-1]. From a general trend of long-term, continuous, sea-level rise tracked by growth, the reef-edge coralgal assemblages have experienced two distinct changes controlled by the antecedent paleotopography and internal reef processes. During the past 13.8 k.y. at Tahiti, there is no evidence of any reef-drowning event primarily caused by global glacio-eustatic perturbations as has been recorded in the Caribbean.

Der moderne Mensch nutzt eine fast unübersichtlich gewordene Fülle synthetischer Stoffe, die seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts in den Laboratorien der Materialwissenschaftler und Chemiker entstanden sind. Es handelt sich dabei primär um Kunststoffe, Synthesefasern, Metalllegierungen, Keramiken und Gläser. Zwischenzeitlich sind auch die Probleme dieser modernen Materialien (Müll, Entsorgung, Recycling) offenbar geworden. Deren Allgegenwart verdrängt oft, dass wir auch weiterhin in hohem Maße von pflanzlichen Naturprodukten abhängig sind. Denn ohne diese aus Pflanzen gewonnenen Werkstoffe, Fasern, Elastomere, Hydrokolloide, Alkohole, Öle, Wachse, Harze und Energieträger wäre unser Alltag nicht nur weit weniger angenehm, sondern völlig undenkbar. Pflanzen sind seit vielen Jahrmillionen die Grundlage aller anderen Lebensformen. Nur Pflanzen sind in der Lage, aus den rein anorganischen Stoffen Kohlendioxid und Wasser unter Nutzung von Licht als Energiequelle den einfachen Zucker Glucose zu synthetisieren. Daraus entsteht mit Stickstoff, Sauerstoff, Phosphor, Schwefel, Chlor und etwa 20 weiteren, vorwiegend metallischen Elementen eine äußerst eindrückliche Vielfalt lebenswichtiger Moleküle. Der Autor erklärt, wie stark wir in zahlreichen, z.T. kaum bekannten Bereichen von der pflanzlichen Biosphäre abhängen (unter Ausklammerung von Nahrungspflanzen und pharmazeutischen Wirkstoffen). In lexikonartiger Weise werden Werkstoffe (z.B. Holz), Fasern, Elastomere, Verdickungsmittel, Alkohole und Öle, Wachse, Farbstoffe sowie verschiedene weitere Naturstoffe und pflanzliche Energieträger vorgestellt, deren Gewinnung, Verarbeitung und Nutzen für den Menschen von Bedeutung sind. Unsere Lebensqualität und unser längerfristiges Überleben hängen auf kritische Weise vom Schutz und nachhaltiger Nutzung dieser Naturstoffe ab. 21st century man uses a wide range of synthetic materials, most of which were invented and developed just before and after World War II in the laboratories of chemists and materials scientists. Enormous progress was made in the fields of plastics, fibers, metal alloys, ceramics and glasses. SeveraI decades later people realized that those miracle materials posed new problems in terms of disposal, incineration and recycling. Those issues preoccupy the media and politics, but often hide the simple fact that we still very much depend on natural plant products that have been discovered and put to use for the benefit of mankind hundreds if not thousands of years ago. Materials, fibers, elastomers, hydrocolloids, alcohols, oils, waxes, resins and energy carriers supplied by plants all too often are taken for granted, as they seemingly have always been around. Few of us are aware of the fact that without them, our lives would not only be a lot less comfortable but downright unthinkable. For a billion years now, plants have been the direct or at least indirect pre­condition of most other forms of life. Plants alone are capable of synthesizing simple sugars such as glucose from carbon dioxide and water using solar radiation as the source of energy. This photosynthesis is the starting point of ten thousands of complex chemical reactions often also involving nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur and about twenty trace elements, mostly metals. The result is an extremely diversified set of molecules that are needed for the intricate chemistry of life. The author aims to point out how intimately man is linked to the plant biosphere, even though the vast fields of food and pharmaceuticals were consciously not considered. He has endeavored to explain the properties of plant materials and their processing as thoroughly as possible but in terms that are understandable to the interested layman. This information is of vital importance: the quality of our lives, our long-term survival critically depends on protecting the sources of plant materials that must be used in an intelligent, sustainable way. This book addresses all those interested in our natural environment and the plant products nature supplies.

Abstract

Abstract The applicant Arysta Life Science Great Britain Limited submitted a request to the competent national authority in Croatia to evaluate the confirmatory data that were identified for quizalofop‐P‐tefuryl in the framework of the maximum residue level (MRL) review under Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as not available. Since Article 12 data gaps were also set for the two other quizalofop‐P variants sharing the same residue definitions for risk assessment and monitoring, EFSA included in the present assessment all quizalofop‐P variants: quizalofop‐P‐ethyl, quizalofop‐P‐tefuryl and propaquizafop. Moreover, in the application submitted to Croatia, the applicant also included a request to modify the existing MRLs for quizalofop‐P‐tefuryl in grapes, sunflower seeds and soyabeans in accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. To address the data gaps, new data on hydrolysis efficiency of quizalofop‐P‐tefuryl, quizalofop acid, quizalofop‐pentanoic acid and quizalofop‐P‐glycerate in different matrices of animal origin in accordance with the guidance document SANTE/2020/12830 Rev.1 were submitted, along with a validated analytical method for animal commodities. EFSA concluded that the data gap on validation of the efficiency of the extraction and hydrolysis included in the enforcement method of residues in livestock animal commodities was only fully addressed for muscle, poultry liver and eggs. Regarding plant commodities, the remaining data gaps were not addressed. EFSA also considered data gaps for quizalofop‐p‐ethyl in caraway as sufficiently addressed in the context of a previous MRL application. In general, the new information provided required a revision of the existing MRLs for several commodities of plant and animal origin. Further risk management considerations are required. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of quizalofop‐P‐tefuryl according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract

Abstract In compliance with Article 43 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA received from the European Commission in 2020 a mandate to provide its reasoned opinion on the toxicological properties and maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the benzimidazole substances carbendazim and thiophanate‐methyl. Specifically, EFSA was asked to assess whether thiophanate‐methyl or carbendazim has clastogenic potential and, in case clastogenic potential can be excluded, to derive toxicological reference values necessary for consumer risk assessment and assessment of maximum residue levels (MRLs). Although these active substances are no longer authorised within the European Union, MRLs were established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (codex maximum residue limits; CXLs), and import tolerances are in place. Based on the assessment of the available data, toxicological reference values and MRL proposals were derived and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Some information required by the regulatory framework was found to be missing and a possible acute risk to consumers was identified. Hence, the consumer risk assessment was considered indicative only and all MRL proposals derived by EFSA still require further consideration by risk managers. In October 2022, to ensure that MRLs derived by EFSA in its assessment of 2021 are safe for consumers also in view of endocrine‐disrupting properties, EFSA was requested to carry out a follow‐up assessment taking into account the scientific criteria for identifying endocrine disruptors (ED). Based on the outcome of the assessment, the experts agreed that the reference values are also covering the concern related to the identified hazards indicative of endocrine disruption for thiophanate‐methyl. No further considerations on the impact of the ED assessment on the current reference values were needed for carbendazim since the ED criteria are not met for this substance. Therefore, the risk assessment and the MRL recommendations derived in 2021 are confirmed.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant BASF SE submitted a request to the competent national authority in Finland to modify the temporary maximum residue level (MRL) to a permanent MRL for the active substance mepiquat in cultivated fungi (with a specific MRL for oyster mushrooms). The data submitted in support of the request (monitoring data from food business operators) are not sufficient to derive permanent MRL proposals. The assessment of these data, complemented by an analysis of the most recent monitoring data available from EU monitoring programmes, supports the conclusion that the existing t‐MRL for cultivated fungi is still sufficient to account for the residue uptake in cultivated mushrooms other than oyster mushrooms. It was also noted that lower t‐MRLs could be derived based on the assessment of the most recent monitoring data. A risk management decision is still needed on whether to maintain the existing t‐MRL value. Regarding oyster mushrooms, EFSA derived different options for risk managers to eventually update the values of the temporary MRLs based on the most recent monitoring data from food business operators. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of mepiquat (expressed as mepiquat chloride) in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the cross‐contamination of untreated cultivated fungi (including oyster mushrooms) from cereal straw lawfully treated with mepiquat according to the current agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract The applicant Detia Freyberg GmbH submitted to the competent national authority in Germany two requests to evaluate the confirmatory data that were identified for tree nuts, oilseeds, cereals and commodities of animal origin in the framework of the maximum residue level (MRL) review under Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as not available and two requests in accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 to increase the existing MRL for the active substance aluminium phosphide in peanuts, barley, oat, rye, rice and wheat, roots of herbal infusions, cocoa beans and seed spices and for the active substance magnesium phosphide in oilseeds (except peanuts) and pistachios. The four applications were combined by EFSA under the current assessment. To address the data gaps, validation data for the method of analysis for enforcement of phosphide in high‐oil content commodities and new residue trials were submitted. The data gaps on additional residue trials supporting authorisations on oilseeds and cereal grains, on clarifications regarding the discrepancies observed in the residue trial results for pistachios, and on data confirming the negligible occurrence of phosphane and its oxidation products in livestock products were considered addressed. The data gap on independent laboratory validation (ILV) and a confirmatory method for monitoring of phosphide in high‐oil content commodities was considered not fully addressed. The information provided justified a lowering of the current tentative MRLs for the whole group of cereals (except rice and ‘others’), an increase of the current tentative MRLs for pistachios, the whole group of oilseeds, rice and ‘other’ cereals, herbal infusions from roots, cocoa beans and seed spices, and a revision of the risk assessment performed for phosphane and its phosphide salts. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of AlP and Mg3P2 according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of clopyralid residues in honey, resulting from the authorised use of clopyralid on oilseed rape notified in the present MRL assessment, is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues according to the residue definition as of the sum of flonicamid, TFNA and TFNG, expressed as flonicamid in the plant matrices under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg for each compound. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the uses of flonicamid according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

175. Stromatolites associated with coralgal communities in Holocene high-energy reefs

Abstract

Thick laminar to columnar stromatolitic growths encrust typical high-energy coralgal reef communities in a French Polynesian outer-reef edge. The reef communities accumulated during vertical growth from 5870 plus or minus 100 yr B.P. to the present, at depths never exceeding 5 m below mean sea level. Oxygen and carbon isotope records and high calcification rates of stromatolite-encrusted corals strongly suggest that for about the past 6000 yr, the local environmental conditions were optimal for reef development. Accordingly, stromatolites can grow in healthy Holocene reefs. Because similar stromatolites have been recorded in other Cenozoic reefs, we suggest that microbial structures may have played a more prominent role in Cenozoic reef growth than is currently recognized.

Abstract

Abstract According to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA has reviewed the maximum residue levels (MRLs) currently established at European level for the pesticide active substance zoxamide. To assess the occurrence of zoxamide residues in plants, processed commodities, rotational crops and livestock, EFSA considered the conclusions derived in the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, the MRLs established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the European authorisations reported by Member States and the UK (including the supporting residues data). Based on the assessment of the available data, MRL proposals were derived, and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Although no apparent risk to consumers was identified, some information required by the regulatory framework was missing. Hence, the consumer risk assessment is considered indicative only and some MRL proposals derived by EFSA still require further consideration by risk managers. Furthermore, in accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the Applicant Gowan Crop Protection Ltd, submitted a request to the competent national authority in Latvia to set an import tolerance for zoxamide in onions (extrapolated to garlic and shallots) based on the use authorised in USA. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for all crops under assessment. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of zoxamide according to the agricultural practices on onions, garlic and shallots is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Syngenta Crop Protection AG submitted a request to the competent national authority in the Netherlands to modify the existing maximum residue level (MRL) for the active substance mandipropamid in radish leaves (classified under the subgroup of kales), based on an intended indoor use on radishes. The residue data in radish leaves submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive an MRL proposal for this commodity. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of mandipropamid on the commodity under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of mandipropamid according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. The reliable end points, appropriate for use in regulatory risk assessment are presented.

Abstract In accordance with Article 43 of Regulation (EC) 396/2005, EFSA received a request from the European Commission to review the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the non‐approved active substance chlorfenapyr in view of the possible lowering of the MRL set for tea. This current EU MRL is based on an import tolerance established in 2007. EFSA reviewed the toxicological data assessed by other scientific bodies, proposing toxicological reference values to be used for an indicative risk assessment, noting that the values are affected by additional, non‐standard uncertainties. According to the indicative chronic and acute dietary risk assessment the existing MRL for tea does not pose an unacceptable risk for consumers. Further risk management discussions are required to decide which of the risk management options proposed by EFSA should be implemented in the EU MRL legislation.

The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for flupyradifurone and DFA in avocados, mangoes, papayas, asparagus, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, sugar beet roots and chicory roots. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of flupyradifurone and DFA in plant matrices under consideration at the validated limits of quantification (LOQs) of 0.01 and 0.007 mg/kg, respectively. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of flupyradifurone and DFA residues resulting from the use of flupyradifurone according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 43 of Regulation (EC) 396/2005, EFSA received a request from the European Commission to review the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the non‐approved active substance profenofos in view of the possible lowering of the MRL. EFSA investigated the origin of the current EU MRLs. Existing EU MRLs are based on Codex Maximum Residue Limits still in place or reflect temporary MRLs set from monitoring data. EFSA performed an indicative chronic and acute dietary risk assessment for the list of MRLs to allow risk managers to take the appropriate decisions. For some commodities, further risk management discussions are required to decide which of the risk management options proposed by EFSA should be implemented in the EU MRL legislation.

The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive maximum residue level (MRL) proposals for avocados. Since the general data gap related to toxicity of degradation products formed under sterilisation conditions and identified in the framework of the MRL review has not yet been addressed, a risk management decision is required as to whether it is appropriate to take over the proposed MRLs in the MRL legislation. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of lambda‐cyhalothrin in the commodity under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of lambda‐cyhalothrin according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. However, the consumer exposure calculation shall be considered provisional, pending the toxicological assessment of the compounds formed under sterilisation conditions.

Abstract

Takapoto Atoll (northern Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia, Central Pacific) was selected as a test area to clarify the conditions of atoll island accretion in relation to mid- to late-Holocene sea-level changes. Surveys were conducted along two distinct cross-island profiles, on the windward coast of the atoll. In addition, the stratigraphy of an ocean-facing islet was described from an excavation in order to reconstruct the successive island accretionary stages. At both sites, the basement of the atoll-rims consists of conglomerate pavements on which lie shingle ridges, reaching 4 m in elevation. Stratigraphic analysis of the excavated ridge reveals alternation of gravelly sand-supported to gravel-dominated sediments. The chronology of island accretion is based on dating of 41 U/Th surface and excavated coral specimens. Ridge initiation occurred from about 1000 yr BP when sea level was close to its present position, shingle deposits progressively prograded from the lagoon margins oceanwards and were partially cemented at their bases. Cementation may have increased the resistance of the islets to erosion. As a result, some island lands accumulated and have persisted over the last millennium. The modern gross island morphology was acquired during the last 500 years. This model can be considered to be of regional value for the northern Tuamotu islands, adjusted for local thermal subsidence, hydroisostasy and/or lithospheric flexure. Compared to some other Indo-Pacific reef islands, island initiation at Takapoto appears to be have been delayed by 2 to 4 millennia, probably in response to retardation in the reef catching-up with mid-Holocene sea level. Dating of individual coarse-grained coral clasts allowed the major wave-surge events that have hit Takapoto to be identified for the last millennium. The use of gravels results in the identification of a greater number of medium-energy surge impacts, when compared with megaclast-based records. The frequency of storm events identified is consistent with that derived from historical observations; severe storms have a very low frequency of occurrence – one to two events per century on average.

Abstract

International audience; Composed of biodetritic sediments and lying just a few meters above present sea-level, atoll reef islands are liable to be highly exposed to coastal flooding and shoreline erosion. Nevertheless, the analysis of multi-decadal shoreline change has shown that most reef islands either remain stable in area or are expanding within the context of current sea level rise. This article addresses the key issue of future atoll-island persistence using a simple morphodynamic model based on the computation of sediment production and fluxes, vertical coral growth and reef island accretion, with special reference to Mururoa Atoll (French Polynesia). The model parameters are calibrated from previously gained stratigraphic frameworks and sediment production rates. While a proper validation is a challenge with the scares data available, the model fits well with the atoll-rim and atoll-islands evolution schemes of Mururoa Atoll since the last glacial maximum. Multi-millennial projections of sea-level rise (Clark et al., 2016) are used to examine future reef island response to rising sea-level. Assuming that all sediment volumes available on the atoll rim maintain in place and that the sediment production remains unaffected by ocean warming and acidification, the reef is interpreted as able to catch up sea level rise in the near future. Even in this very optimistic evolution scheme, the new reef edifice would be filnally drown in a high carbon emission scenario. The present study, along with others, strongly suggests that the persistence of reef islands in the future requires the conservation of already available sediments together with a continued production of coral detritus, not only from the outer slopes, but also on the atoll rim as water depths increase.

Abstract

BackgroundPrebiotics and probiotics (synbiotics) can modify gut microbiota and have potential in allergy management when combined with amino-acid-based formula (AAF) for infants with cow's milk allergy (CMA).MethodsThis multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of an AAF-including synbiotic blend on percentages of bifidobacteria and Eubacterium rectale/Clostridium coccoides group (ER/CC) in feces from infants with suspected non-IgE-mediated CMA. Feces from age-matched healthy breastfed infants were used as reference (healthy breastfed reference (HBR)) for primary outcomes. The CMA subjects were randomized and received test or control formula for 8 weeks. Test formula was a hypoallergenic, nutritionally complete AAF including a prebiotic blend of fructo-oligosaccharides and the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium breve M-16V. Control formula was AAF without synbiotics.ResultsA total of 35 (test) and 36 (control) subjects were randomized; HBR included 51 infants. Abstract

Understanding the relationship between coral biogeography and reef development is a key topic in sedimentology and paleoecology. Although the knowledge of coral reef growth and internal facies patterns during the Holocene has increased since the 1970s, the biogeography of Holocene coral species in the Indo-Pacific regions remains poorly constrained. In this study, we examined quantitative records of coral species based on data from five cores retrieved from two Holocene reefs in the western Indian Ocean: La Pointe-au-Sable reef on Mauritius Island and Toliara reef on Madagascar. Our results indicate that the dominant reef-building corals on both reefs were Isopora palifera , Acropora robusta/abrotanoides complex. Some corals (e.g., the A. robusta / abrotanoides complex and Acropora digitifera ) from 6 ka were found in Mauritius, whereas these were not identified in the cores from Madagascar before 1.5–1 ka. This delay may have been controlled by ocean currents and/or the competency period of the coral larvae. A comparison of these coral assemblages with those in other regions (Seychelles, Mayotte, Ryukyu Islands, Palau Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu) showed that I. palifera was common in all of the studied regions, whereas Goniastrea retiformis probably migrated recently to Mauritius and Madagascar in response to prevailing surface ocean currents, including the South Equatorial Current and the Agulhas Current. One explanation for the late arrival of G. retiformis to the study sites could be that the competency period of G. retiformis larvae is shorter than that of I. palifera . Moreover, our quantitative analysis suggests that a given population size during the Holocene may have contributed to the abundance of species in modern reefs. This study emphasizes the need for further quantitative research on Holocene coral species in other regions to better understand the temporal and spatial patterns of coral biogeography.

Abstract

Background Children with cow's milk allergy (CMA) are at risk for inadequate nutritional intake and growth. Dietary management of CMA, therefore, requires diets that are not only hypoallergenic but also support adequate growth in this population. This study assessed growth of CMA infants when using a new amino acid-based formula (AAF) with prebiotics and probiotics (synbiotics) and evaluated its safety in the intended population. Methods In a prospective, randomized, double-blind controlled study, full-term infants with diagnosed CMA received either an AAF (control; n = 56) or AAF with synbiotics (oligofructose, long-chain inulin, acidic oligosaccharides, Bifidobacterium breve M-16V) (test; n = 54) for 16 wk. Primary outcome was growth, measured as weight, length and head circumference. Secondary outcomes included allergic symptoms and stool characteristics. Results Average age (±SD) of infants at inclusion was 4.5 ± 2.4 months. Both formulas equally supported growth according to WHO 2006 growth charts and resulted in similar increases of weight, length and head circumference. At week 16, differences (90% CI) in Z-scores (test–control) were as follows: weight 0.147 (−0.10; 0.39, p = 0.32), length −0.299 (−0.69; 0.09, p = 0.21) and head circumference 0.152 (−0.15; 0.45, p = 0.40). Weight-for-age and length-for-age Z-scores were not significantly different between the test and control groups. Both formulas were well tolerated and reduced allergic symptoms; the number of adverse events was not different between the groups. Conclusions This is the first study that shows that an AAF with a specific synbiotic blend, suitable for CMA infants, supports normal growth and growth similar to the AAF without synbiotics. Background: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) which substantially reduces morbidity and mortality in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive patients has been associated with hepatotoxicity. This study was aimed at investigating the effects of HIV infection and ART on liver function amongst HIV seropositive patients in Douala, Cameroon. Methods: A cross- sectional study was conducted from March to August, 2012 at the Nylon District Hospital, Douala. Demographic data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Abstract

The conditionally essential amino acid glycine functions as inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Moreover, it has been shown to act as an anti-inflammatory compound in animal models of ischemic perfusion, post-operative inflammation, periodontal disease, arthritis and obesity. Glycine acts by binding to a glycine-gated chloride channel, which has been demonstrated on neurons and immune cells, including macrophages, polymorphonuclear neutrophils and lymphocytes. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of glycine on allergy development in a cow's milk allergy model. To this end, C3H/HeOuJ female mice were supplemented with glycine by oral gavage (50 or 100 mg/mouse) 4 hours prior to sensitization with cow's milk whey protein, using cholera toxin as adjuvant. Acute allergic skin responses and anaphylaxis were assessed after intradermal allergen challenge in the ears. Mouse mast cell protease-1 (mMCP-1) and whey specific IgE levels were detected in blood collected 30 minutes after an oral allergen challenge. Jejunum was dissected and evaluated for the presence of mMCP-1-positive cells by immunohistochemistry. Intake of glycine significantly inhibited allergy development in a concentration dependent manner as indicated by a reduction in; acute allergic skin response, anaphylaxis, serum mMCP-1 and serum levels of whey specific IgE. In addition, in-vitro experiments using rat basophilic leukemia cells (RBL), showed that free glycine inhibited cytokine release but not cellular degranulation. These findings support the hypothesis that the onset of cow's milk allergy is prevented by the oral intake of the amino acid glycine. An adequate intake of glycine might be important in the improvement of tolerance against whey allergy or protection against (whey-induced) allergy development.

Conclusion: AAF including specific synbiotics, which results in levels of bifidobacteria and ER/CC approximating levels in the HBR group, improves the fecal microbiota of infants with suspected non-IgE-mediated CMA.
