Background: Community engagement has contributed to disease control and elimination in many countries. Community engagement in malaria elimination (ME) on Aneityum Island has been sustained since its introduction in the early 1990s. Capacity developed within this population has led to a health empowered community response. Health Empowerment Theory (HET) can account for the innovative community actions and capacity development efforts taken to realize and sustain meaningful changes in well-being. This study used the HET framework to investigate participant perceptions of ME efforts on the island focusing on two HET elements, personal and social-contextual resources. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of empowerment as a critical element of community engagement. Methods: Six focus group discussions, ten key informant interviews and 17 in-depth interviews were conducted in July 2012 on Aneityum. Both deductive and inductive approaches to qualitative content analysis were used to identify themes, which were condensed, coded and classified based on the HET elements above. Results: Awareness and use of personal and social-contextual resources played an important role in ME efforts. Most participants shared their knowledge to prevent malaria reintroduction. Many participants reported their skills needed for behavioral maintenance, problem-solving or leadership. Participants who perceived a threat took preventive actions even in the dry season. Community leaders focused on second generation capacity development. A local health coalition provided ME services. Members of networks were sources of information and assistance. Face-to-face was the preferred method of communication. Barriers to engagement (e.g., financial difficulties, health literacy issues and underdeveloped infrastructure) were minimized through active collaboration and mutual assistance. Conclusions: In the community engagement continuum, health empowerment develops incrementally overtime as people gain their knowledge and skills, form coalitions and develop collaborative networks (social capital) to make decisions and take action for change. Community engagement, which facilitates local personal and social-contextual resource development, has potential for ME and multilevel empowerment through community-based capacity development processes. These self-empowered communities have written and will continue to write a 'prescription' for sustaining high levels of engagement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainable building materials are of top quality from technical point of view, with a long lifetime and a low cost of maintenance and exploitation. To ensure the sustainability of a building one of the essential condition is to use local materials with reduced embodied energy, low cost and good appearance. In case of new buildings masonry works can be durable and sustainable in the same time if all the materials (units and mortars) used to realise them have the similar characteristics (mineralogical composition, texture, structure, physical and mechanical properties). The study was performed considering tuffs as masonry units, mortar based on these tuffs (both in substitution of cement and sand), and classical mortar as joining together in order to realise a homogeneous structure. I’m honoured and pleased by the invitation to narrate firsthand some of my design experiments in “bioarchitecture”, a field I have been involved in since my post-graduate experiences until today with in-depth studies. Definitely, this article gives me an opportunity to revisit my past and recent works and share them with young researchers or any professionals willing to know more about the approaches pursued by the scholars of the Schools of Architecture in Italy in the past and still underway. I’m honoured by the opportunity of comparing my views against others’ on the vision of the architecture project in order to provide fresh inputs. I’m pleased because it gives me the opportunity to make my work known with the expectation that the conditions to build synergies and make either a practical or theoretical contribution to the community I live in, will be accomplished. In particular, research topics are outlined on building typologies, processes, construction and environmental systems with prime focus on the design of a human living environment and new solutions to counteract the urban and landscape decay compatibly with available resources.

Recent ethnobotanical studies have raised the hypothesis that religious affiliation can, in certain circumstances, influence the evolution of the use of wild food plants, given that it shapes kinship relations and vertical transmission of traditional/local environmental knowledge. The local population living in Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan comprises very diverse religious and linguistic groups. A field study about the uses of wild food plants was conducted in the district. This field survey included 120 semi-structured interviews in 27 villages, focusing on six religious groups (Sunni and Shia Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and Ahmadis). We documented a total of 77 wild food plants and one mushroom species which were used by the local population mainly as cooked vegetables and raw snacks. The cross-religious comparison among six groups showed a high homogeneity of use among two Muslim groups (Shias and Sunnis), while the other four religious groups showed less extensive, yet diverse uses, staying within the variety of taxa used by Islamic groups. No specific plant cultural markers (i.e., plants gathered only by one community) could be identified, although there were a limited number of group-specific uses of the shared plants. Moreover, the field study showed erosion of the knowledge among the non-Muslim groups, which were more engaged in urban occupations and possibly underwent stronger cultural adaption to a modern lifestyle. The recorded traditional knowledge could be used to guide future development programs aimed at fostering food security and the valorization of the local bio-cultural heritage.

For my SASAH experiential-learning project, I worked at the Timmins Public Library over the summer of 2020. While it was my third year working as a summer student at the library, this one offered new challenges and unique learning opportunities as I was working in the midst of a pandemic. My main responsibilities were working on the newly implemented curbside pick-up program and assisting patrons over the phone. But working at the library is so much more than just checking out books. Throughout the summer, I created social-media content, organized a StoryWalk event, and provided vital resources to the community. The library is an important pillar in the community as it provides free access to information and books, directories to community resources, computer and internet access, and a safe space for all community members, including patrons experiencing homelessness. As part of the library’s dynamic team, I helped adapt library resources to safely meet community needs and undertook a variety of projects that allowed me to exercise creativity and have a meaningful impact in the community. Through this work, I gained invaluable communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills and developed as a professional and a person.

The built environment represents a major component in the overall global energy use, being responsible for the consumption of at least 40% of the entire amount. Energy is a fundamental problem of humanity, being responsible for the accelerated fossil fuel depletion (as a result of production processes) and for the huge amount of greenhouse gases resulted during energy production and consumption processes. To mitigate these problems, a new energy pattern is required, mainly involving renewable energy systems. This paper presents the steps for a novel methodology aiming at supporting a community into the transition towards sustainability, by giving use to the local renewable energy sources, following four major steps: (i) estimating and analyzing the current energy demand, (ii) analysis of the community structure and of the consumers types, (iii) estimating the amount and variability of the local renewable energy resources, (iv) conceptual design of renewable-based energy mix scenarios, aiming at covering the energy demand at community level. This methodology can be tailored according to the specific profile of any average sized community, as the case study developed for a 10000 inhabitant-community shows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

, This paper has two purposes. The first is to discover traces of the Hachihonmatsu branch of the Hiroshima Army Weapon Supply Depot (hereinafter referred to as the Depot), which is a war site, by identifying aerial photographs and conducting field surveys. The second is to propose a method for organizing and utilizing information on the war ruins for educational purposes. From aerial photographs we identified 36 facilities that appear to have been used for ammunition or gunpowder storage. Next, through our field surveys, we discovered 13 stone marks indicating the boundary of the land owned by the military around Karimata Pond and some banks surrounding the ammunition storage. This survey revealed the distribution and existence of storage in the Depot. We examined how to utilize each in both school and social education and showed what is required and the significance of utilizing the war remains left over in the area. For education at school, we proposed multi methods including learning about peacetime. Regarding social education, we created a map that promotes a comprehensive understanding of the war ruins for citizens and visitors alike. This article is expected to help promote the reinvestigation and utilization of war ruins that have thus far not been thoroughly investigated.

AGRICULTURAL development , *RURAL development , *AGRICULTURAL economics , *SOCIAL structure , *ECONOMIC structure , *ECONOMIC history - Abstract
The Region of Western Serbia and Šumadija has favorable conditions for agricultural and rural development due to the fact that it disposes of important resources such as: land, livestock resources, manpower. However, numerous difficulties influenced the development as a result of inherited property structure of farms, social structure of population, position, function and role of agriculture in rural development, economic development, but also in the development of agrar policy itself. Family farms represent the main subjects of agricultural production, other activities and rural development. Potentials of family farms of the region enable the members of farms and households to practice activities other than agricultural production and therefore to influence rural development and development of rural areas. Rural areas of the region with potentials have possibilities to produce more food and develop other production related activities with the scope of enabling sustainable socio-economic rural development, protection of natural resources from pollution, increase of the land fertility and biodiversity preservation. Agriculture has a special place in economic development of the region, especially because it represents an important source of profit and jobs in its numerous branches, and furthermore, it plays the main role in rural development enabling valorization of local resources and development of small and medium business activities in different sectors. Regarding crumbled and weak private sector of agriculture in the context of making conditions for a more balanced development of rural areas, a rational solution is the one that would create possibilities for a family farm to become equal with other economic entities in all aspects, in its status and position in development and economic policies, with the aim of increasing food production and therefore improvement of the development of rural areas and rural development. For this reason, it is important to create conditions for the development of comparative advantages of modern agricultue in rural areas of the region and more ballanced rural development. - Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the incorporation of the sub product mucilage of coffee in the fabrication of nutritional blocks and its impact on fabrication variables, chemical composition and animal preference. Nutritional blocks with different concentrations of coffee mucilage (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %) were used in place of molasses and combined with base ingredients corn, cement, urea, minerals and sulfur. The following variables were evaluated: setting time, consistency, ease of mixing, and hardness. The chemical composition was found by analyzing raw protein, insoluble and soluble protein, fractions of neutral detergent fiber, organic matter and ash. For the test of animal preference, a cafeteria test was used with the following measurements: number of visits, number of licks and bites, effective time of licking or biting, and consumption of each block by each animal. The field measurements were used to calculate the following variables: licking/biting speed, consumption speed, size of lick or bite, consumption rate and preference index. Data on quality and preference were submitted to an analysis of variance through the GLM procedure of the SAS statistical package (SAS, 1994). Quality variables were analyzed using a randomized experimental design with seven treatments and 10 repetitions per treatment. For the preference test, the experiment had a data collection period of four days, with two evaluation periods. A Latin square experimental design was used. In both cases, averages were evaluated using the Tukey test (p<0.05). Results indicate that it is feasible to incorporate coffee mucilage in nutritional blocks as an up to 75 % substitution for molasses from sugar cane. No alterations are thus produced in the chemical composition of the nutritional blocks and animal preference is greater than with molasses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main focus of this paper is to discuss the roles and functions of community-based learning centres and spaces in Asia, within the overall context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN General Conference in 2015, with a particular focus on Goal 4 on education towards 2030. This paper reviews how community-based learning institutions emerged within the education for all (EFA) context in Asia and discusses their changing roles and functions through the education for sustainable development (ESD) context; it then explores the potential contribution community-based learning can make to the SDGs. There are three key enabling factors to ensure the roles and functions of community learning centres (CLCs) as community coordinators for sustainable development, namely, community participation, comprehensive programme development and developing networks and linkages. If the main roles and functions in the concept that has emerged for CLCs are carried out, the activities of the CLCs themselves will promote ESD in communities. Abundant local human, natural, information and infrastructure resources are available to tackle local, national and even global issues. CLCs have good potential to act as catalysts to facilitate linkages and partnerships between different stakeholders through intersectoral and intergenerational learning, and thus contribute to developing social capital in the community.

The research proposes the development of the heritage of social housing as a public experiment to measure up to the quality parameters required for the achievement of a ‘European model of the city.’ The goal is configuring a development that can return, or provide, the liveability to the settlements considered, conscious of the territorial reality characterized by widespread housing system and consistent with the evolving needs (social, economic and environmental) and the emerging socio-economic and environmental criticalities. The work is developed from knowledge of the settlement and the territorial system connected, as the basis for prefiguration of a scenario in which you identify a few privileged areas of action for the main urban and territorial dynamics, the management of ‘flows’, and new areas of discussion related to the problem of time, communication, mobility and logistics. You configure structural and managerial innovations (enhancement of territorial potentialities and integration of productive sectors; building cycle based on the recovery and rehabilitation). A ‘closed loop system’ where urban regeneration is powered and built from local resources.

, This study investigates the roles of social capital in resource-based rural development using the community of Shirao-cho, Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture. Firstly, the authors overview the concept of social capital. Next, bonding-type and bridging-type social capital are defined. Concurrently, the authors also group the various activities which maintain and utilize the unique local resources in Shirao-cho. Finally, the authors investigate which type of social capital contributes to maintaining and utilizing resources for rural development. The study revealed that bonding-type social capital relates to maintaining the resources and that bridging type social capital relates to utilizing resources. From these results, we conclude that utilization of local resources is made upon the sustainable maintenance of resources, and that both bonding-type and bridging-type social capital are required to utilize the resources for sustainable rural development.

, In this report, the authors describe the practices of vocational education utilizing regional resources at our school, re-established in 2017 as the first co-location school in Hiroshima Prefecture, that corresponds to both education for orthopedically impaired students and education for mentally retarded students. This approach is organized as an “employment assistance project” led by the career guidance department at its central core. In this project, the authors hold an“ employment assistance conference” and a“ company visit day” in order to further promote networking with regional resources and to enhance productive employment support. Based on advice from the conference participants in the first year, the authors developed three further approaches. The authors hereby describe the specific practices as such: “guidance to the lower division students associating with skill test” that focuses on how to generalize and proactively apply in daily life, the skills absorbed through the Hiroshima Prefectural Special Needs Education School Skill Test;“ group training” that aims towards overcoming challenges found in the training through the process of organizing, understanding, improving and practicing again onsite, and “group interview” that encourages deeper awareness of oneself through interview exchanges with employment assistance conference members.

- Abstract
Architecture plays a complex role in the history of Kosovo. On the surface, the Kosovar attitude appears not to value architecture for anything other than what it visibly represents. Yet, on a deeper level, this attitude reveals a lack of awareness that society now can and should take responsibility for its urban environment. It is this absence of agency that condones extensive littering and the almost absolute obliteration of the remaining historic urban fabric for parking lots and generic contemporary housing. This attitude can be ascribed to the fact that architecture was central to the conflict fought in the Kosovo war, as a marker and legitimization of a fabricated ethnic identity, but more significantly it reaches back to the communist era and to the time when Kosovo’s public realm was passed from one totalitarian regime to another. The question thus becomes; how can architecture unwind this historical way of dealing with public space and through citizen engagement bring forward a discourse on agency and belonging in one’s urban environment. What role can the architect play here? How can he or she justify his or her presence? And what is the best approach? As Kosovo’s large population of young people begin to see public space in a new light, public attitudes that once deemed common spaces as the responsibility of the government are fading away. So, harnessing this opening and through engaging these new young communities, how can architecture become a socially constructive force through the processes around its formation, expression, and use?, Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences

- Abstract
In view of the evidence of the use of Dasyphyllum diacanthoides by peasants of the Region of the Araucanía, in the center-south zone of Chile, as winter food for their cattle, and the nonexistence of reports on the use of this forage, in this paper we determined the nutritional value of the species. Samples taken from different edible parts of D. diacanthoides were dried and subjected to a proximate analysis and detergent system to determine dry matter; crude protein, ether extract; phosphorus, crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, total ash and metabolizable energy. It was shown that shoots and leaves are the edible parts that have the best nutritional values among the analyzed variables. Additionally, by calculating the digestible energy, digestible dry matter and the average metabolizable energy, it was found that D. diacanthoides has intermediate values for these variables compared to those of forage tree species used in different parts of the world and to the main local forage species. The plant presents balanced energy-protein ratio values, turning into an important winter supplement forage in view of the low availability of forage in the mountain localities of the Region of the Araucanía, as compared to other forage species used in Chile.

- Abstract
The energy efficiency of the buildings and environment protection are considered to be the most important factors in obtaining a sustainable development of the entire our society. One step to assure these objectives is to exploit the local natural resources in manufacturing of new buildings materials which has low cost, low embodied energy and improved thermal insulation properties. In this respect the paper present five new mortar recipes, using the local zeolitic volcanic tuff, from Macicas quarry (north-west of Cluj - Napoca city) used in different percentage (30%, 50%, 80%), as a substitute of the Portland cement. The mortar samples has been analysed and comparated from mechanical (compressive and flexural strength) and physical (apparent density, real volume, compactness and porosity) point of view showing the differences between them, cost and embodied energy. Abstract: The potential of incorporating fodder tree foliage in the production of multinutritional feed blocks (MNBs) to supplement grazing sheep was evaluated. Leaves from Guazuma ulmifolia Lam., Leucaena lanceolata S. Watson, Acacia cochliacantha Humb. & Bonpl. Willd, and Brosimum alicastrum Swartz were used to make 2.5kg blocks which were offered to test the preference, consumption and weight gain in Pelibuey sheep during MNB supplementation while grazing. The MNBs contained 23.5% crude protein, 25% neutral detergent fiber, 17.5% acid detergent fiber, and 63% dry matter in vitro digestibility. Sheep equally preferred MNBs containing B. alicastrum, L. lanceolata, and G. ulmifolia, and less so A. cochliacantha (P>0.05). They also consumed more B. alicastrum MNB dry matter and less from those with A. cochliacantha (P<0.05). Supplementation with MNBs containing B. alicastrum did not increase weight gain (EEM=0.021). However, the nutritional quality of the MNBs might have a higher impact when animal diets in the field are based on low quality forages. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The research proposes the development of the heritage of social housing as a public experiment to measure up to the quality parameters required for the achievement of a 'European model of the city.' The goal is configuring a development that can return, or provide, the liveability to the settlements considered, conscious of the territorial reality characterized by widespread housing system and consistent with the evolving needs (social, economic and environmental) and the emerging socio-economic and environmental criticalities. The work is developed from knowledge of the settlement and the territorial system connected, as the basis for prefiguration of a scenario in which you identify a few privileged areas of action for the main urban and territorial dynamics, the management of 'flows', and new areas of discussion related to the problem of time, communication, mobility and logistics. You configure structural and managerial innovations (enhancement of territorial potentialities and integration of productive sectors; building cycle based on the recovery and rehabilitation). Today, Japan strives to preserve some of its rural Satoyama landscapes in a sustainable way in order to ensure the survival of some well-functioning rural ecosystems in the face of continuing urbanization on the one hand and the neglect of such landscapes on the other. In the Lake Biwa watershed area in Shiga Prefecture, Satoyama landscapes comprise woodlands, grasslands, dry and wet fields, residential areas, and the lakeshore. The area today faces two major challenges: first, how to use local natural resources in a sustainable way to avoid further neglect or destruction of Satoyama landscapes; and second, how to reorganize the management of Satoyama forest and lakeshore resources. The results of our investigation showed how solutions to the above issues were found in the context of lakeshore projects aimed at restoring reed ( Phragmites communis) communities, which are important component of the Lake Biwa Satoyama landscape. Since 2002, four such projects have been successfully undertaken through the efficient use of local forest resources, mainly wood and bamboo, in wave dissipation structures and jetties which facilitate the expansion of reed communities. Management was reorganized and now consists of stakeholders which include the original Satoyama management communities, governmental bodies, resident and nonresident citizens, and nongovernmental and nonprofit organizations. The projects are a unique attempt to revive Satoyama watershed landscapes, and may serve as models in other watershed areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During natural disasters such as earthquakes or tsunamis, most of the casualties are known to suffer from musculoskeletal injuries. This leads to an enormous need of orthopaedic (surgical) implants such as osteosynthesis plates, which are difficult to provide in developing countries that rely on imported ones. One of the alternatives is utilization of local resources, but only after they have been proven safe to use, and meet the international standards set. Through this paper we would like to urge the international community to include locally produced biomedical products, like osteosynthesis plates in their scientific evaluations and communications. When the quality of local products is proven, the reluctance to use local products also by surgeons from developing countries will disappear and larger scale production can be initiated. This in its turn solves many problems that come after natural disasters and stimulates the national economy in an efficient and effective way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Minimization costs is one of the key tasks in the organization of the corporate training process in a large company, which can be partially solved by the introduction of specialized automated systems. Increasing the automation level here should be carried out very carefully, as excessive automation can make the system uncomfortable and not flexible enough. An information technology infrastructure of LCC Gazprom transgaz Nizhny Novgorod currently has a number of significant limitations and requirements for the information system that makes it impossible to use online access to the unified database and using two-phase transactions. This paper presents the development of an original synchronization mechanism of distributed databases data based on the method of asynchronous delivery of the transaction log. The proposed principle of construction of the system minimizes the work on setting up the database on remote nodes. The application problem of ensuring the integration of the local databases residing in some nodes of the computer network to a user running on any node in the network has been solved. In the aftermath of a disaster, it is the unavailability of energy which causes the worst further economic, social and environmental distress. Optimal man- agement before the disaster, at the preparedness stage, is a top priority and the best solution. We analyse the role of buffer stock management in disas- ter-prone areas, and develop a management model for the local resource of energy in this instance, coconut shell charcoal briquettes to establish power security beforehand and to remain environmentally friendly. The theoretical implications of this study enrich the literature in strategic planning and pro- duction, and the practical results are that communities stockpile energy based on local resources. Biodiversity concerns and the sustainability of agroecological systems, together with consumer demand for higher quality products from alternative and extensive farming methods, have reinforced interest in local breeds that are well adapted to low-input environments. The first reference to Portuguese poultry breeds appeared in the 1930s, with registration and breeding programs of native breeds only being implemented in the last ten years. Portuguese chicken breeds (Pedrês Portuguesa, Preta Lusitânica, Amarela, and Branca) are almost extinct and are currently bred on small-scale farms for egg and meat production. This study aimed to characterize the performance of laying hens, evaluating the influence of genotype, age, and season on egg production over four years in farm conditions. The results highlight the Pedrês Portuguesa as the most productive breed regarding egg production and reveal a tendency for an increase in egg production performance by the Branca in contrast with the lower productive capacity of the Preta Lusitânica. Older hens start laying earlier in consecutive laying periods, present a shorter peak, and an inferior number of total eggs/cycle. There is a need to establish breeding goals and to evaluate and revise breeding programs to increase productivity in autochthonous Portuguese chicken breeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Farmers in Sahelian countries are confronted with a variety of soil fertility and management problems. During the last two decades, NGOs have worked with farmers and research institutions to develop and test practices that will increase food production, while at the same time enhance the natural resource base. Since 1987, The Rodale Institute (RI) has worked closely with farmers' associations and government institutions to promote regenerative agriculture-farming systems that prioritize the use of local resources while improving them as they are used to grow food, using agro-ecological methods. The Senegalese Agricultural Research Institute has collaborated in this program as a partner of RI. The Senegal Regenerative Agriculture Resource Center model has been applied as a new and viable approach that builds on traditional knowledge and farmer-to-farmer exchange. Research results on soil conservation and improvement have shown that fields spread with amended animal manure or compost yield greater harvests than fields farmed with traditional methods. The purpose of this research is to find if the stakeholders involved in rural tourism (primary producers of ecological goods, tourism service providers, and tourists, as carriers of demand for tangible products and ecological services) are concerned with integrating principles and values of sustainable tourism through permaculture and downshifting, and how these two phenomena might become sources for sustainable development in rural areas. To achieve this purpose, qualitative research was conducted among tourism producers, intermediaries, and tourists from the Brașov region&ndash, one of the most important touristic areas of Romania and, also, an important region with rural tourism destinations. The results revealed that there is a particular preoccupation regarding permaculture and downshifting, and they might contribute to the local development of rural tourism areas. The novelty elements brought by this research are synthesized in a matrix where permaculture and downshifting were presented as important sources for the sustainable development of tourism in rural areas.

Nepal is vulnerable to environmental disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, floods and hurricanes. These disasters disproportionately affect rural life. Disaster risks are often approached in a purely technical and physical manner, but people’s behaviour in the face of natural hazards and disasters is influenced by various factors such as historical, economic, political and socio-cultural factors. This case uses a post-disaster resilience assessment focusing on cooperation during the recovery after a severe earthquake that hit central Nepal in 2015 which impacted rural communities. This paper analyses the people’s behaviour and its basic logic at post-earthquake recovery from a socio-cultural aspect focusing on the gaun, the basic minimal informal social unit. Special consideration was made to the ethnic heterogeneity of the communities studied. For the purpose of this study, key informants interview (KII), group discussion and transect walk were used. This study finds that gaun based local resources are traditional and primary resources for people’s daily life but the ward and VDC based resources are newly formed. Various forms of cooperation were observed regardless ethnicity at the gaun level. This study further reveals that local people’s activities towards the post-disaster recovery can be described in three periods. They are: emergent, resilient, reconstruction periods. On the basis of the study of these periods for post-disaster recovery, a very good social relationship among gaun people at emergency was realized.

This study deals with the development of the seedball technology in particular for dry sowing under Sahelian conditions and pearl millet as crop. At first, our participatory evaluation in Senegal showed that (i) local materials needed for seedball production are locally available, (ii) the technology conforms to the existing management systems in the Sahel, and (iii) socio-economic conditions do not hinder seedball adoption. Afterwards, seedball was mechanically and chemically optimised. Pearl millet seedlings derived from the seedball variants were grown and compared to the control under greenhouse conditions. Our results showed that the combination of 80 g sand + 50 g loam + 25 ml water is the standard seedball dough, which produces about ten 2 cm diameter-sized seedballs. Either 1 g NPK fertiliser or 3 g wood ash can be added as nutrient additive to enhance early biomass of pearl millet seedlings. Ammonium fertiliser, urea and gum arabic as seedball components hampered seedlings emergence. Seedball + 3 g wood ash and seedball + 1 g NPK-treatments enhanced shoot biomass by 60 % and 75 %, root biomass by 36 % and 94 %, and root length density by 14 % and 28 %, respectively, relative to the control. Shoot nutrient content was not greatly influenced by treatment. However, multiplying biomass yield with nutrient content indicates that nutrient extraction was higher in nutrient-amended seedballs. On-station field tests in Senegal showed over 95 % emergence under real Sahelian conditions. Since early seedlings enhancement is decisive for pearl millet panicle yield under the Sahelian conditions, on-farm trials in the Sahel are recommended.
