This paper tackles the problem of video object segmentation. We are specifically concerned with the task of segmenting all pixels of a target object in all frames, given the annotation mask in the first frame. Even when such annotation is available this remains a challenging problem because of the changing appearance and shape of the object over time. In this paper, we tackle this task by formulating it as a meta-learning problem, where the base learner grasping the semantic scene understanding for a general type of objects, and the meta learner quickly adapting the appearance of the target object with a few examples. Our proposed meta-learning method uses a closed form optimizer, the so-called "ridge regression", which has been shown to be conducive for fast and better training convergence. Moreover, we propose a mechanism, named "block splitting", to further speed up the training process as well as to reduce the number of learning parameters. In comparison with the-state-of-the art methods, our proposed framework achieves significant boost up in processing speed, while having very competitive performance compared to the best performing methods on the widely used datasets., 9 pages

As a milestone for video object segmentation, one-shot video object segmentation (OSVOS) has achieved a large margin compared to the conventional optical-flow based methods regarding to the segmentation accuracy. Its excellent performance mainly benefit from the three-step training mechanism, that are: (1) acquiring object features on the base dataset (i.e. ImageNet), (2) training the parent network on the training set of the target dataset (i.e. DAVIS-2016) to be capable of differentiating the object of interest from the background. (3) online fine-tuning the interested object on the first frame of the target test set to overfit its appearance, then the model can be utilized to segment the same object in the rest frames of that video. In this paper, we argue that for the step (2), OSVOS has the limitation to 'overemphasize' the generic semantic object information while 'dilute' the instance cues of the object(s), which largely block the whole training process. Through adding a common module, video loss, which we formulate with various forms of constraints (including weighted BCE loss, high-dimensional triplet loss, as well as a novel mixed instance-aware video loss), to train the parent network in the step (2), the network is then better prepared for the step (3), i.e. online fine-tuning on the target instance. Through extensive experiments using different network structures as the backbone, we show that the proposed video loss module can improve the segmentation performance significantly, compared to that of OSVOS. Meanwhile, since video loss is a common module, it can be generalized to other fine-tuning based methods and similar vision tasks such as depth estimation and saliency detection.

Over recent years, emerging interest has occurred in integrating computer vision technology into the retail industry. Automatic checkout (ACO) is one of the critical problems in this area which aims to automatically generate the shopping list from the images of the products to purchase. The main challenge of this problem comes from the large scale and the fine-grained nature of the product categories as well as the difficulty for collecting training images that reflect the realistic checkout scenarios due to continuous update of the products. Despite its significant practical and research value, this problem is not extensively studied in the computer vision community, largely due to the lack of a high-quality dataset. To fill this gap, in this work we propose a new dataset to facilitate relevant research. Our dataset enjoys the following characteristics: (1) It is by far the largest dataset in terms of both product image quantity and product categories. (2) It includes single-product images taken in a controlled environment and multi-product images taken by the checkout system. (3) It provides different levels of annotations for the check-out images. Comparing with the existing datasets, ours is closer to the realistic setting and can derive a variety of research problems. Besides the dataset, we also benchmark the performance on this dataset with various approaches. Charge prediction, determining charges for criminal cases by analyzing the textual fact descriptions, is a promising technology in legal assistant systems. In practice, the fact descriptions could exhibit a significant intra-class variation due to factors like non-normative use of language, which makes the prediction task very challenging, especially for charge classes with too few samples to cover the expression variation. In this work, we explore to use the charge definitions from criminal law to alleviate this issue. The key idea is that the expressions in a fact description should have corresponding formal terms in charge definitions, and those terms are shared across classes and could account for the diversity in the fact descriptions. Thus, we propose to create auxiliary fact representations from charge definitions to augment fact descriptions representation. The generated auxiliary representations are created through the interaction of fact description with the relevant charge definitions and terms in those definitions by integrated sentence- and word-level attention scheme. As the post-processing step for object detection, non-maximum suppression (GreedyNMS) is widely used in most of the detectors for many years. It is efficient and accurate for sparse scenes, but suffers an inevitable trade-off between precision and recall in crowded scenes. To overcome this drawback, we propose a Pairwise-NMS to cure GreedyNMS. Specifically, a pairwise-relationship network that is based on deep learning is learned to predict if two overlapping proposal boxes contain two objects or zero/one object, which can handle multiple overlapping objects effectively. Through neatly coupling with GreedyNMS without losing efficiency, consistent improvements have been achieved in heavily occluded datasets including MOT15, TUD-Crossing and PETS. In addition, Pairwise-NMS can be integrated into any learning based detectors (Both of Faster-RCNN and DPM detectors are tested in this paper), thus building a bridge between GreedyNMS and end-to-end learning detectors., Comment: 12 pages

Distant Supervised Relation Extraction (DSRE) is usually formulated as a problem of classifying a bag of sentences that contain two query entities, into the predefined relation classes. Most existing methods consider those relation classes as distinct semantic categories while ignoring their potential connection to query entities. In this paper, we propose to leverage this connection to improve the relation extraction accuracy. Our key ideas are twofold: (1) For sentences belonging to the same relation class, the expression style, i.e. words choice, can vary according to the query entities. To account for this style shift, the model should adjust its parameters in accordance with entity types. (2) Some relation classes are semantically similar, and the entity types appear in one relation may also appear in others. Therefore, it can be trained cross different relation classes and further enhance those classes with few samples, i.e., long-tail classes. To unify these two arguments, we developed a novel Dynamic Neural Network for Relation Extraction (DNNRE). The network adopts a novel dynamic parameter generator that dynamically generates the network parameters according to the query entity types and relation classes. By using this mechanism, the network can simultaneously handle the style shift problem and enhance the prediction accuracy for long-tail classes. Vehicle re-identification is an important problem and becomes desirable with the rapid expansion of applications in video surveillance and intelligent transportation. By recalling the identification process of human vision, we are aware that there exists a native hierarchical dependency when humans identify different vehicles. Specifically, humans always firstly determine one vehicle's coarse-grained category, i.e., the car model/type. Then, under the branch of the predicted car model/type, they are going to identify specific vehicles by relying on subtle visual cues, e.g., customized paintings and windshield stickers, at the fine-grained level. Inspired by the coarse-to-fine hierarchical process, we propose an end-to-end RNN-based Hierarchical Attention (RNN-HA) classification model for vehicle re-identification. RNN-HA consists of three mutually coupled modules: the first module generates image representations for vehicle images, the second hierarchical module models the aforementioned hierarchical dependent relationship, and the last attention module focuses on capturing the subtle visual information distinguishing specific vehicles from each other. By conducting comprehensive experiments on two vehicle re-identification benchmark datasets VeRi and VehicleID, we demonstrate that the proposed model achieves superior performance over state-of-the-art methods., Comment: ACCV 2018
