According to conceptual metaphor theory, individuals are thought to understand or express abstract concepts by using referents in the physical world—right and left for moral and immoral, for example. In this research, we used a modified Stroop paradigm to explore how abstract moral concepts are metaphorically translated onto physical referents in Chinese culture using the Chinese language. We presented Chinese characters related to moral and immoral abstract concepts in either non-distorted or distorted positions (Study 1) or rotated to the right or to the left (Study 2). When we asked participants to identify the Chinese characters, they more quickly and accurately identified morally positive characters if they were oriented upright or turned to the right and more quickly and accurately identified immoral characters when the characters were distorted or rotated left. These results support the idea that physical cues are used in metaphorically encoding social abstractions and moral norms and provided cross-cultural validation for conceptual metaphor theory, which would predict our results.

Compared to mono-species biofilm, biofilms formed by cross-kingdom pathogens are more refractory to conventional antibiotics, thus complicating clinical treatment and causing significant morbidity. Lemongrass essential oil and its bioactive component citral were previously demonstrated to possess strong antimicrobial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. However, their effects on polymicrobial biofilms remain to be determined. In this study, the efficacy of lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) essential oil and its bioactive part citral against dual-species biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus and Candida species was evaluated in vitro. Biofilm staining and viability test showed both lemongrass essential oil and citral were able to reduce biofilm biomass and cell viability of each species in the biofilm. Microscopic examinations showed these agents interfered with adhesive characteristics of each species and disrupted biofilm matrix through counteracting nucleic acids, proteins and carbohydrates in the biofilm. Moreover, transcriptional analyses indicated citral downregulated hyphal adhesins and virulent factors of Candida albicans, while also reducing expression of genes involved in quorum sensing, peptidoglycan and fatty acids biosynthesis of S. aureus. Taken together, our results demonstrate the potential of lemongrass essential oil and citral as promising agents against polymicrobial biofilms as well as the underlying mechanisms of their activity in this setting.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of low-dose rituximab (RTX) in the treatment of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) patients.Methods: NMOSD patients were treated with RTX at ~25% of the standard dose. The annualized relapse rate (ARR), expanded disability status scale (EDSS) score, visual function system scale (VFSS) and length of spinal cord lesions before and after treatment were statistically compared. The dynamic changes in the proportion of CD19+ B lymphocytes after treatment were monitored, and adverse reactions were recorded.Results: In total, 36 NMOSD patients who received a low-dose RTX treatment (375-mg/m2 induction dose and 500 mg every 6 months) were recruited. The mean follow-up time after the RTX treatment was 19.83 ± 7.74 months. After the treatment, the ARR decreased from 1.97 ± 1.93 to 0.12 ± 0.32, the EDSS score decreased from 3.43 ± 1.49 to 3.10 ± 1.88, and the spinal cord lesion length decreased from 5.54 ± 3.96 to 4.31 ± 3.73. These differences were all statistically significant. The subgroup analysis of the patients who had previously received non-steroidal immunosuppressants (NSISs) (n = 20) showed that after the RTX treatment, the ARR decreased from 0.66 ± 0.51 to 0.08 ± 0.26, the EDSS score decreased from 3.65 ± 1.22 to 3.40 ± 1.99, and the spinal cord lesion length decreased from 5.68 ± 3.73 to 4.21 ± 3.58. These differences were all statistically significant. The VFSS scores did not show a significant change. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that low-dose RTX significantly delayed recurrence, which was also observed in the subgroup analysis of patients who previously received NSISs. Five relapses in 5 cases were noted after the low-dose RTX administration, and the percentage of CD19+ B cells remained < 1% in 3 cases during relapse. During the RTX treatment and subsequent follow-up, 8 (22.2%) patients reported adverse reactions, all of which were minor.Conclusion: Low-dose RTX is an effective and safe treatment method for NMOSDs. This method is worth popularizing in developing countries or regions, especially in areas where RTX is not covered by medical insurance.

Abstract Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in the development and progression of breast cancer (BC). The purpose of the present study was to identify plasma miRNAs enabling early diagnosis of BC. Materials and Methods Expression levels of seven plasma miRNAs (miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐29b‐2‐5p, miR‐130a‐5p, miR‐144‐3p, miR‐148a‐3p, miR‐152‐3p, and miR‐182‐5p) in 106 patients with newly diagnosed BC and 96 healthy participants were analyzed by qRT‐PCR. We also evaluated the relationship between the expression levels of these miRNAs and clinicopathological features of patients with BC. Results Compared with healthy controls, we found that miR‐23a‐3p (p = .025), miR‐130a‐5p (p = .006), miR‐144‐3p (p = .040), miR‐148a‐3p (p = .023), and miR‐152‐3p (p = .019) were downregulated in the plasma of patients with BC. MiR‐130a‐5p, miR‐144‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p were downexpressed in BC tissues as well as plasma. The expression of the miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐144‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p was related to ER positive and PR positive. Besides, miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐144‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p did show the significant difference in the staging compromised to the control, especially in stage I‐II. Moreover, we also found that miR‐144‐3p and miR‐148a‐3p were associated with lymph node invasion. Conclusions The expression levels of the miR‐23a‐3p, miR‐130a‐5p, miR‐144‐3p, miR‐148a‐3p, and miR‐152‐3p were lower in patients with BC compared to healthy controls and were associated with ex hormone receptor, clinical stage, and lymph node metastasis, indicating the diagnostic potential of these miRNAs in BC.

Osteogenic differentiation is an important role in dental implantation. Long no coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a novel class of noncoding RNAs that have significant effects in a variety of diseases. However, the function and mechanisms of LOC100506178 in osteogenic differentiation and migration of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2)-induced osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymalstem cells (hBMSCs) remain largely unclear. BMP2 was used to induce osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs. Quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to examine the expression of LOC100506178, miR-214-5p, Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), Osterix (Osx), and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) in BMP2-induced osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs. The function of LOC100506178 and miR-214-5p was explored in vitro using Alizarin Red S Staining, ALP activity, as well as in vivo ectopic bone formation. Luciferase reporter assay was performed to assess the association between LOC100506178 and miR-214-5p, as well as miR-214-5p and BMP2. The miR-214-5p sponging potential of LOC100506178 was evaluated by RNA immunoprecipitation. In the present study, the expression of LOC100506178 was found to be increased in BMP2-induced osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs, accompanied with decreased miR-214-5p expression and increased RUNX2, Osx and ALP expression. LOC100506178 significantly induced, while miR-214-5p suppressed the BMP2-induced osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs. Mechanistically, LOC100506178 was directly bound to miR-214-5p and miR-214-5p targeted the 3′-untranslated region of BMP2 to negatively regulate its expression. In conclusion, our data indicate a novel molecular pathway LOC100506178/miR-214-5p/BMP2 in relation to hBMSCs differentiation into osteoblasts, which may facilitate bone anabolism.

Porous aromatic framework (PAF) materials with π-π conjugation system based on Scholl reaction were found to exhibit satisfying photocatalytic performance, that can successfully degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless phenol. By selecting different multiple-phenyl building blocks, six kinds of PAF materials named as P-BP materials were successfully constructed by Scholl reaction, which exhibit not only photocatalytic ability, but also moderate specific surface areas, wide solar spectrum coverage, and good thermal and chemical stabilities. Depending on their different building block selections, the photocatalytic performance can be adjusted. The P-BP-DPA was found to exhibit the highest photocatalytic performance with 100% and 50% degradation rate for RhB and phenol in 300 min, respectively. Free radical trapping experiments showed that the photocatalytic activity originated from the strong oxidation capability of photogenerated holes. The band structure of such group of materials can be readily adjusted. With different monomers, their band gaps can be tuned from 1.87 to 2.36 eV, and their valence band positions were adjusted from 1.93 to 3.44 eV (vs NHE). Abstract Background Arachis contains 80 species that carry many beneficial genes that can be utilized in the genetic improvement of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L. 2n = 4x = 40, genome AABB). Chromosome engineering is a powerful technique by which these genes can be transferred and utilized in cultivated peanut. However, their small chromosomes and insufficient cytological markers have made chromosome identification and studies relating to genome evolution quite difficult. The development of efficient cytological markers or probes is very necessary for both chromosome engineering and genome discrimination in cultivated peanut. Results A simple and efficient oligonucleotide multiplex probe to distinguish genomes, chromosomes, and chromosomal aberrations of peanut was developed based on eight single-stranded oligonucleotides (SSONs) derived from repetitive sequences. High-resolution karyotypes of 16 Arachis species, two interspecific F1 hybrids, and one radiation-induced M1 plant were then developed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using oligonucleotide multiplex, 45S and 5S rDNAs, and genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) using total genomic DNA of A. duranensis (2n = 2x = 20, AA) and A. ipaënsis (2n = 2x = 20, BB) as probes. Genomes, chromosomes, and aberrations were clearly identifiable in the established karyotypes. All eight cultivars had similar karyotypes, whereas the eight wild species exhibited various chromosomal variations. In addition, a chromosome-specific SSON library was developed based on the single-copy sequence of chromosome 6A of A. duranensis. In combination with repetitive SSONs and rDNA FISH, the single-copy SSON library was applied to identify the corresponding A3 chromosome in the A. duranensis karyotype. Conclusions The development of repetitive and single-copy SSON probes for FISH and GISH provides useful tools for the differentiation of chromosomes and identification of structural chromosomal rearrangement. It facilitates the development of high-resolution karyotypes and detection of chromosomal variations in Arachis species. To our knowledge, the methodology presented in this study demonstrates for the first time the correlation between a sequenced chromosome region and a cytologically identified chromosome in peanut.

Abstract Background The equity of rural-to-urban migrants’ health care utilization is already on China’s agenda. The Chinese government has been embarking on efforts to improve the financial and geographical accessibility of health care for migrants by strengthening primary care services and providing universal coverage. Patient experiences are equally vital to migrants’ health care utilization. To our knowledge, no studies have focused on equity in the patient experiences between migrants and locals. Based on a patient survey from Guangdong, China, which has a large number of rural-to-urban migrants, our study assessed the equity in the primary care patient experiences between rural-to-urban migrants and urban locals in the same health insurance context, since different forms of insurance can affect the patient experiences of primary care. Methods We stratified our samples by different insurance types into three layers. We assessed primary care patient experiences using a validated Chinese version of the Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCAT), including eight primary care attributes. A ‘PCAT total score’ was calculated. Data were collected through face-to-face and one-on-one surveys in 2014. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used for each layer to generate comparable samples between rural-to-urban migrants and urban locals. Based on the matched dataset, a t-test was employed to compare the primary care patient experiences of the two groups. Results Using PSM, 220 patients in the rural-to-urban migrants group were matched to 220 patients in the urban locals group. After the matching, the observed confounding variables were balanced, and the PCAT scores were almost equal between the two groups. The only slight differences existed in the Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance layer and in the without basic medical insurance coverage layer. Conclusions Equity in the primary care patient experiences between rural-to-urban migrants and urban locals seems to have been achieved to some extent. However, there is room for improvement in the equity of coordination of care and comprehensiveness. Policy makers should consider strengthening these two dimensions by integrating the health care system. More attention should be focused on helping migrants break down language and cultural barriers and improving the patient-physician communication process.

Micro-linear motor, is the key feed components which is based on macro–micro-motion control technology, the accuracy of its movement directly determines the accuracy of ultra-precision machining level. Based on the study of the open servo characteristics of POWER program multiple axis controller (PMAC), a fuzzy proportional integral derivative (PID) composite control technology is applied to the servo control of the motor. The fuzzy control is used to improve the response speed and dynamic performance of the system, and the precise PID control is used to realise the precise position control. In this study, based on the analysis of linear motor installation and load characteristics, the use of smooth switching fuzzy PID composite control algorithm is applied to the micro-feed motor control. Due to the introduction of the smoothing weighting function, the composite fuzzy PID servo control mode of dual mode switching is implemented without disturbance switching. Finally, the effect of the control algorithm is verified by experiments, especially in the case of small errors, this algorithm still reflects the ability to adapt to the impact of interference.

In this article, a method for two-dimensional scanning path planning based on robot is proposed. In this method, a section division algorithm based on neighborhood search method for scanning orientation determination is firstly produced. The scanning paths which meet constraints of the system are then generated. Finally, the experiment is carried out on robot-based scanning platform. The two-dimensional data from scanner and the robot position are combined to form three-dimensional surface data of measured workpiece. The experiment results verify the effectiveness of proposed method.
