162. Macroscopic superlubricity of potassium hydroxide solution achieved by incorporating in-situreleased graphene from friction pairs

Abstract

Graphene (G), as a typical two-dimensional material, is often used as an additive for liquid lubricants. However, graphene is mostly added to liquid lubricants in a one-time manner in friction; it mainly exists in the form of multilayer agglomerated structures due to the π−πstacking between graphene sheets, making it unable to fully exert the synergistic lubrication function. Herein, we propose a new macroscopic superlubric system of graphene/potassium hydroxide (G/KOH) solution; and the graphene additive involved is exfoliated in-situfrom graphene/epoxy (G/EP) friction pair by friction, continuously providing freshly-peeled graphene into KOH solution and minimizing the adverse effects of graphene agglomeration. Moreover, the in-situproduced graphene additive has thinner thickness and better anti-aggregation ability, which provide more graphene to accommodate OH−, form more stacked sandwich structures of OH−/graphene/OH−between friction pairs (i.e., equivalent to a moving pulley block with more wheels), and finally realize superlubricity. This study develops a new liquid superlubric system suitable for alkaline environments, and at the same time proposes a new way to gradually release graphene additives in situ, rather than adding them all at once, deepening the understanding to liquid superlubricity mechanism, and paving the experimental foundation for the practical application of macroscopic superlubricity.

171. Nano/micro dual-scale ordered carbon units viatemplate heredity toward compact capacitive energy storage

Abstract

High-density carbon with high volumetric energy and power densities is desired for compact supercapacitors. However, most of the traditional solutions for boosting density are based on pore regulation, resulting in an unreasonable sacrifice of rate performance. Herein, from an opposite perspective of carbon units’ orderly stacking, a new strategy for compressing surplus pores between dual-scale carbon units at nanometer and micrometer scales (i.e., two-stage ordering of the first-level carbon nanocages and the second-level micro disc-like carbon nanocage assemblies) has been developed by regulating the template. The optimized carbon packed with ordered nano- and micro-carbon units achieves a high density of 1.08 g cm−3(two times that of the commercial activated carbon) and yields a record-high volumetric energy density (79 Wh L−1), good power capability (31 kW L−1) in ionic liquid, superb stability (>30,000 cycles), and ideal Coulombic efficiency (∼100%). Even at the commercial-level electrode thickness, the available maximal stack power density is still as high as 12 kW L−1, which is dramatically higher than most of the reported dense carbon. This excellent volumetric performance highlights its practical potential in areas that require high volume energy and power density simultaneously.

Abstract

Oblique impact loading conditions are unavoidable in practical applications, which strongly influence the performance response of energy-absorbing structures. In this paper, the finite element models of four typical cellular structures (hexagon honeycomb, re-entrant hexagon honeycomb, star-shape honeycomb, double arrow honeycomb) are established and experimentally validated. The dynamic responses of four structures under different impact angles (from 0 to 30°) and impact velocities (from 5 to 50 m/s) are investigated. On this basis, the influences of impact angle and impact velocity on the specific energy absorption (SEA) and peak crushing force (PCF) of four structures are discussed. The results reveal that the negative Poisson's ratio structure has the advantage of energy absorption under axial impact due to the characteristics of compression and contraction at the low impact velocity. The hexagonal honeycomb structure has great advantages in terms of comprehensive energy absorption capacity and better stability at varying inclination angles. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) coupled with the ideal point method (IPM) is utilised to explore the optimal design of hexagon honeycomb structure, which is then verified by a detailed crashworthiness comparison with the original design. The optimal honeycomb structure shows excellent crashworthiness characteristics and demonstrates great potential for applications in impact engineering, especially the oblique impact loading situations. Abstract

With the development of three-dimensional printing technologies, so-called cellular materials have achieved increasing attention due to outstanding properties. Unlike pure solid structures, properties of cellular materials are influenced by both utilized material and cell microtopology. The present paper proposes a novel type of re-entrant square cellular material. To explore the relationship between microtopology and macrodynamic responses systematically, an explicit dynamic finite element simulation method is used. This work starts by constructing theoretical models of relative density employing a two-dimensional unit cell. Then, the effects of geometric features and configurations on dynamic properties are explored, and simulations indicate that variations of geometric parameters strongly affect properties and that the staggered re-entrant squares are more stable than the regular re-entrant squares. Subsequently, the effects of the impact velocity on dynamic crushing behaviors are elaborated. On this basis, the relationship of unit mass energy absorption and geometric features is obtained by employing the response surface method. Furthermore, with targets of maximum unit mass energy absorption and minimum relative density, the optimal structural parameters are achieved by using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The study provides a detailed introduction to dynamic behaviors of cellular materials and guidance to design new structures with superior characteristics of energy absorption.
