Abstract

Synergistic effects of intumescent flame retardant and nano-CaCO3 on foamability and flame retardant property of polypropylene composites and their foams were carefully investigated. The differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the intumescent flame retardant played a plasticizing effect on the polypropylene/intumescent flame-retardant composites and accelerated the crystallization rate. The rheological properties and supercritical CO2-assisted molding foaming behaviors of the polypropylene/intumescent flame retardant/nano-CaCO3 composites showed that the nano-CaCO3 could enhance their foamability. Scanning electron microscopy pictures and mechanical properties of the polypropylene/intumescent flame-retardant composites foams indicated that the agglomeration of intumescent flame retardant would reduce the cell uniformity and even cause the cell collapse. Furthermore, the stress concentration, caused by the agglomeration, could reduce the mechanical properties of the PP composites foams. The synergistic effect of the nano-CaCO3 could improve the cell uniformity and reduce the stress concentration so that the mechanical properties of the polypropylene/intumescent flame retardant /nano-CaCO3 composites foams were improved. Moreover, the polypropylene/intumescent flame retardant/nano-CaCO3 composites foams had the higher limit oxygen index values than the polypropylene/intumescent flame-retardant foams. TGA results also showed that the nano-CaCO3 could improve the thermal stability of the polypropylene composites foams by forming compact carbon layer. The experimental results indicated that the foamability of the polypropylene composites and the flame-retardant property of their foams could be improved by the synergistic effects of intumescent flame retardant and nano-CaCO3.

Abstract

This article discusses the aging behavior of Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes (QLEDs) that use sputtered TiO2 as the Electron Transport Layer (ETL). The authors explain that while there have been advancements in improving the efficiency and lifetime of QLEDs, controlling and predicting device characteristics during storage and operation remains challenging. To address this issue, the authors introduced a sputtered TiO2 film as an alternative ETL, which offers promise in resolving these challenges. The findings indicate that devices incorporating a sputtered TiO2 film as the ETL exhibit a controllable and predictable aging curve, with a lower acceleration factor compared to conventional QLEDs. Abstract

Privacy preservation is a crucial issue for smart buildings wh ere all kinds of messages, e.g., power usage data, control commands, events, alarms, etc. are transm itted to accomplish the management of power. Without appropriate privacy protection schemes, electricity customers are faced with various privacy risks. Meanwhile, the natures of smart grids and smart buildings—such as having limited computation power of smart devices and constraints in communication network capabilities, while requiring being highly reliable—make privacy preservation a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a group key scheme to safeguard multicast privacy with the provisions of ava ilability, fault-tolerance, and efficiency in the context of smart buildings as a part the smart grid. In particular, hybrid architecture accommodating both centralized and contributory modes is constructed in order to achieve both fault-tolerance and efficiency with only one set of group key installed. Key trees are sophisticatedly managed to reduce the number of exponentiation operations. In addition, an individual rekeying scheme is introduced for occasional joining and leaving of member smart meters. Experimental results, on a simulation platform, show that our scheme is able to provide significant performance gains over state-of-the-art methods while effectively preserving the participants’ privacy.

Abstract

Multi-view learning (MVL) has gained great success in integrating information from multiple perspectives of a dataset to improve downstream task performance. To make MVL methods more practical in an open-ended environment, this paper investigates a novel paradigm called multi-view class incremental learning (MVCIL), where a single model incrementally classifies new classes from a continual stream of views, requiring no access to earlier views of data. However, MVCIL is challenged by the catastrophic forgetting of old information and the interference with learning new concepts. To address this, we first develop a randomization-based representation learning technique serving for feature extraction to guarantee their separate view-optimal working states, during which multiple views belonging to a class are presented sequentially; Then, we integrate them one by one in the orthogonality fusion subspace spanned by the extracted features; Finally, we introduce selective weight consolidation for learning-without-forgetting decision-making while encountering new classes. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets validate the effectiveness of our approach. • A novel multi-view class incremental learning paradigm is investigated. • Randomized representation learning ensures view-optimal working states. • Orthogonality fusion progressively integrates each newly collected view. • Selective weight consolidation alleviates catastrophic forgetting. Abstract

A novel anti-tumor agent 4-thio-5-(2′′-thienyl)uridine (6) was synthesized and the in vitro cytotoxicity activity against mice colon cancer cells (MC-38) and human colon cancer cells (HT-29) was evaluated by MTT assay. The results showed that the novel compound had antiproliferative activity toward MC-38 and HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry indicated that compound 6 exerted in tumor cell proliferation inhibition by arresting HT-29 cells in the G2/M phase. In addition, cell death detected by propidium iodide staining showed that compound 6 efficiently induced cell apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, the sensitivity of human fibroblast cells to compound 6 was far lower than that of tumor cells, suggesting the specific anti-tumor effect of 4-thio-5-(2′′-thienyl)uridine. Taken together, novel compound 6 effectively inhibits colon cancer cell proliferation, and hence would have potential value in clinical application as an antitumor agent.

This paper is devoted to the $L^p$ ($p>1$) solutions of one-dimensional backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs for short) with general time intervals and generators satisfying some non-uniform conditions in $t$ and $\omega$. An existence and uniqueness result, a comparison theorem and an existence result for the minimal solutions are respectively obtained, which considerably improve some known works. Abstract

Colloidal PbS quantum dots (QDs) are attractive for solution-processed thin-film optoelectronic applications. In particular, directly achieving QD thin-films by printing is a very promising method for low-cost and large-scale fabrication. The kinetics of QD particles during the deposition process play an important role in the QD film quality and their respective optoelectronic performance. In this work, the particle self-organization behavior of small-sized QDs with an average diameter of 2.88 ± 0.36 nm is investigated for the first time in situduring printing by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). The time-dependent changes in peak intensities suggest that the structure formation and phase transition of QD films happen within 30 seconds. The stacking of QDs is initialized by a templating effect, and a face-centered cubic (FCC) film forms in which a superlattice distortion is also found. A body-centered cubic nested FCC stacking is the final QD assembly layout. The small size of the inorganic QDs and the ligand collapse during the solvent evaporation can well explain this stacking behavior. These results provide important fundamental understanding of structure formation of small-sized QD based films prepared vialarge-scale deposition with printing with a slot die coater.

184. Feasibility analysis on the utilization of TWH-caverns with sediment space for gas storage: A case study of Sanshui salt mine

Abstract

Underground salt cavern (USC) has emerged as an optimal location for large-scale energy storage, encompassing oil, gas, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and compressed air energy storage (CAES), owing to its inherent advantages of substantial capacity, stability, and hermeticity. However, most salt mines in China are characterized by a relatively thin salt layer thickness, a large number of interlayers and low salt layers grade. Consequently, a substantial proportion of the cavernous space resulting from water solution mining becomes progressively covered by insoluble sediment. Herein, the feasibility of gas storage in two butted-well horizontal (TWH) caverns with sediments, located within the Sanshui salt mine in Guangdong Province, China, is comprehensively analyzed through engineering investigation, physical model experimentation, numerical simulation, and theoretical analysis. Firstly, a theoretical model was developed to calculate the volume of caverns based on salt grade (soluble content). Secondly, a joint physical model experiment and numerical simulation were conducted to obtain the most probable shape of the process for forming water-soluble caverns. Moreover, a novel technology was proposed to utilize sediment space for gas storage in TWH-caverns. Ultimately, the support pressure of surrounding rock was determined by using the passive earth pressure theory, and subsequently, an assessment of cavern stability was conducted. Here, the numerical simulation results demonstrated that in the absence of sediment space utilization, there was a limited capacity for gas storage, resulting in significant deformation of the surrounding rock and an increased level of roof instability. On the contrary, sediment can provide structural support to the surrounding rock, thus increasing its stability (the plastic zone expansion was reduced from 1600 % (0.3 σz), 1345 % (0.35 σz) and 1297 % (0.4 σz) to 109 %, 87 % and 78 %, respectively) and enhancing the capacity for gas storage. Accordingly, this study provides valuable guidance for the assessment of gas storage in low-grade salt sedimentary environments, as well as for the design of gas injection and brine discharge, and stability evaluations.

Abstract

The development of hyperuricemia (HUA) and gout is associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Quercetin can reduce serum uric acid levels and thus alleviate HUA by modulating the gut microbiota. However, the detailed mechanisms involved in this process are not fully understood. Here, we showed that quercetin significantly reduced the serum uric acid level in a chicken HUA model by altering the chicken cecal microbiota structure and function and increasing the abundance of Lactobacillus aviarius. An L. aviarius strain, CML180, was isolated from the quercetin-treated chicken gut microbiota. Strain characterization indicated that quercetin promoted the growth of L. aviarius CML180 and increased its adhesion, hydrophobicity, and co-aggregation abilities. Gavage of live L. aviarius CML180 to a mouse model of HUA—established by adenosine and potassium oxonate—reduced the serum uric acid level and alleviated HUA. The ability of L. aviarius CML180 to decrease the level of uric acid was due to its degradation of purine nucleosides, which are the precursors for uric acid production. A nucleoside hydrolase gene, nhy69 , was identified from the genome of L. aviarius CML180, and the resulting protein, Nhy69, exhibited strong purine nucleoside-hydrolyzing activity at mesophilic temperature and neutral pH conditions. Abstract Stochastic configuration networks (SCNs) that employ a supervisory mechanism to automatically and fast construct universal approximators can achieve promising performance for resolving regression problems. This paper develops an extension of the original SCNs with block increments to enhance learning efficiency, which has received considerable attention in industrial process modeling. This extension allows the learner model to add multiple hidden nodes (termed hidden node block) simultaneously to the network during construction process. To meet industrial demands, two block incremental implementations of SCNs are presented by adopting different strategies for setting the block size. Specifically, the first one adds the hidden node blocks with a fixed block size, which achieves the acceleration of convergence rate at the cost of model compactness; the second one can automatically set the block size by incorporating simulated annealing algorithm, achieving a good balance between efficiency and complexity. The two algorithms are suitable for industrial data modeling with distinct requirements on modeling speed and memory space. The improved methods for building SCNs are evaluated by two function approximations, four benchmark datasets and two real world applications in process industries. Abstract

Magnolol, a hydroxylated biphenyl compound isolated from Magnolia officinalis has been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of magnolol on acute lung injury induced by lipopolysaccharide in mice. Male BALB/c mice were pretreated with dexamethasone or magnolol 1 h before intranasal instillation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). 7 h after LPS administration, the myeloperoxidase in lung tissues, lung wet/dry weight ratio and inflammatory cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were determined. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The extent of phosphorylation of nuclear factor of inhibitory kappa B alpha (IκB-α), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) p65 and the expression of Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) were detected by western blot. The results showed that magnolol markedly attenuated the histological alterations in the lung; reduced the number of total cells, neutrophils, and macrophages in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid; decreased the wet/dry weight ratio of lungs in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid; down-regulated the level of pro-inflammatory mediators, including TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6; inhibited the phosphorylation of IκB-α, NF-κB p65 and the expression of TLR4, caused by LPS. Taken together, our results suggest that anti-inflammatory effects of magnolol against the LPS-induced acute lung injury may be due to its ability of inhibition TLR4 mediated NF-κB signaling pathways. Magnolol may be a promising potential therapeutic reagent for acute lung injury treatment.
